That was skillfully disguised elbow smash prohibited by the Sumo rulebook. Mongolian sumo wrestlers have no inhibition and tend to abuse the rule, while their opponents (non-Mongolian wrestlers) are too civilised and decent to retaliate by using the same technique.

Yes ! And because there are no weight limit we train with huge guys and we don't need to restrain ourselves during training, we fight 100 %, unlike Muay Thai sparring where you can't be too violent. So basically we're not scared of big guys, and we know to be cautious about little guys 😂

Half the time he was truly elbowing but they always let it slide, there is a clear difference. He was only warned in his last career tournament when he defeated Terunofuji he clearly elbowed him hard. Many many many times though he did shoulder them but a lot were clear elbows just watch the replay..

Hakuho was reprimanded more than once by the JSA for his face slapping and brutal karate-style forearm smashes to the heads of his opponents. Brutal striking is not good sumo.

Yokozuna are expected a degree of brutality. What Haluho does is actually technically legal from anyone that has observed the technique. This hasn't been as common these days and the Endo nose incident was only the most recent one (which he did get back at hakuho by dropping him back on the ropes the basho after). The slap and the elbow later on started working against him when Daieisho and Ichinojou straight up closed those gaps and drove him out. Edit: I'd add that Konishki was an example that not only did he do the elbow right, but also drove it upwards to push opponents away. This made it more effective than what Haluho does with a straight elvow.

Well thank goodness there are videos of this Mongolian brutality, the Japanese were more careful in ensuring that there was less evidence of their brutal acts throughout Asia. Yokozuna's are not playing. This isn't romper room. They have a reputation and legacy to uphold. The Yokozuna knock the pudding out of these upstarts. The upstarts will never forget, holding it as a badge of honor to have faced every Yokozuna, knowing these are the finest in sumo..........
Those that aspire to doing this should find a sport where the other guy actually strikes back with the same stuff, instead of being so one-sided about it while pushing the rules to the limit. It's not really bushido if only one guy is doing it every time. The best defense for the tachiai hits would be to henka, Hakuho style half-henka, but nobody likes being known for resorting to that too often. Just resort to a striking style block, maybe? This isn't a sport for blocking that way. The JSA wouldn't have it, and it'd give up the arms-mawashi.
Fun fact; the Japan Sumo Alliance, JSA for short, are known to be incredibly racist toward foreigner rikishi. They've been criticized by foreign countries like Mongolia and Georgia but Japanese themselves for disciplining foreign wrestlers harshly for trivial things while outright ignoring major Japanese offenses. Asashoryo and Hakuho especially, with Asashoryo he got into an altercation at a bar, he paid for the damages and even the guy he got into a fight with refused to press charges but the JSA doggedly wanted to discipline Asashoryo more harshly even though the incident was was relatively minor. With Hakuho, they held back his Yokozuna promotion for a year even though he broke records and consistently beat higher level opponents something a Japanese would get for half his achievements. The one that pissed me off was there was a giant scandal where a certain Rikishi and stable were bullying their rookies harshly, I'm talking older wrestlers would ask to sleep with the girlfriends of the rookies and gambled and fixed matches yet only 1 wrestler was banned from competing and the stable kept going as if nothing happened. Seriously, fuck the JSA.
I didn't know that in Sumo you can punch your opponent in the face and knock him out. If that's the case one should be careful to protect oneself especially if you are in the attack mode for your momentum and the punch of the opponent will create big damage to your defeat, let's go!

So what does it take to become a yokozuna?
Those that aspire to doing this should find a sport where the other guy actually strikes back with the same stuff, instead of being so one-sided about it while pushing the rules to the limit. It's not really bushido if only one guy is doing it every time. The best defense for the tachiai hits would be to henka, Hakuho style half-henka, but nobody likes being known for resorting to that too often. Just resort to a striking style block, maybe? This isn't a sport for blocking that way. The JSA wouldn't have it, and it'd give up the arms-mawashi.

Fun fact; the Japan Sumo Alliance, JSA for short, are known to be incredibly racist toward foreigner rikishi. They've been criticized by foreign countries like Mongolia and Georgia but Japanese themselves for disciplining foreign wrestlers harshly for trivial things while outright ignoring major Japanese offenses. Asashoryo and Hakuho especially, with Asashoryo he got into an altercation at a bar, he paid for the damages and even the guy he got into a fight with refused to press charges but the JSA doggedly wanted to discipline Asashoryo more harshly even though the incident was was relatively minor. With Hakuho, they held back his Yokozuna promotion for a year even though he broke records and consistently beat higher level opponents something a Japanese would get for half his achievements. The one that pissed me off was there was a giant scandal where a certain Rikishi and stable were bullying their rookies harshly, I'm talking older wrestlers would ask to sleep with the girlfriends of the rookies and gambled and fixed matches yet only 1 wrestler was banned from competing and the stable kept going as if nothing happened. Seriously, fuck the JSA.

I didn't know that in Sumo you can punch your opponent in the face and knock him out. If that's the case one should be careful to protect oneself especially if you are in the attack mode for your momentum and the punch of the opponent will create big damage to your defeat, let's go!
