The Rivalry between Asashoryu & Hakuho was beautiful in many ways. It wasn’t one sided, there was much competitive tension between the two, you had the villain (Asa) and the hero (Hakuho). I only say that based on how Asa’s career unfortunately came to an abrupt stop. This kind of rivalry was much like in boxing where you have Fury/Wilder, meaning that they brought one hell of a draw (they had the IT factor). And once one of those variables was taken out of the equation, it’s crystal clear that sumo will not be the same for a very long time coming, if ever.

I feel like Asashoryu wasnt just competing against other top wrestlers, he was competing against the sumo establishment as well. Its like they didnt want him winning anymore so they forced him out. Hakuho definitely wouldnt have won as much if Asashoryu continued to compete. Its a shame how easily sumo establishment can ban wrestlers and/or manipulate their careers. By western standards, Asashoryu was a sweetheart but by Japanese standards, he was a total bad boy that needed to be made an example of. Keep rockin it steady Asashoryu, you brought new life and spirit to the sport of sumo.
At 9:05 you can see that Hakuho has officially evolved into a beast, who even Asashoryu no longer has a chance against. What a great era this must have been to have watched sumo. I watched plenty in the late 80's, and in that time it was all Chiyonofuji. These guys (Hakuhō Shō and Asashoryu) battles seem like what would have happened if Chiyonofuji could have faced off against himself! Supremely powerful, ultra quick, tactically solid, and strongly motivated....

For those saying Asashoryu was better. Don't forget he was in his prime 20s dominating an upcoming Hakuho who was around 5 years younger and started losing toward the end. @@jasonwiggins6137 My only say with Akebono and Takanohana was that many elite wrestlers were in the same stable as Taka so they never had to fight each other in the 15 day basho. Akebono had a much more competitive path to get yushos so he didn’t win as much. The rivalry would have been more even in a way. They are definitely number 2 rivalry.
@@basics2702 Correct to a degree. Akebono was runner up 13 times. Akebono and Takanohana were battling each other as teenagers. They literally were against each other their entire career, until Akebono's retirement. Man, sumo as a sport is so great. I don’t think any sport illustrates the fighting spirit of humans as well as sumo does (even mma). Nothing is guaranteed, and sometimes the odds seem insurmountable, but these guys charge head long past their doubt time and time again.

本当は相撲教習所に朝青龍を招き、親方ともども新弟子全員を指導してもらった方がいい。白鵬は身体の柔らかさが特徴で相手の圧力を吸収して守りに強いが、攻めは二十代モタモタしていた。逆に朝青龍は二十歳前後ですでに技のスピード&タイミング&柔軟性&連動性が秀でていて身体の小ささくらいしか欠点がなかった。超大型化以降の相撲しか知らない親方衆より、彼の方がずっとトレーナーとして優秀なはず。

はじめは白鵬もまだ体が小さくなす術ない感じだったのが、こうやって見てるとだんだんと身体が大きくなるにつれて立ち合い負けしなくなり、後ろに下がらなくなっているのがわかる。
それとともに徐々に朝青龍も手詰まり感が出て来てある時から完全に力関係が逆転した。
もちろんピークの時期が違うから後半だけで白鵬が強いとは断言できないが、こうやって見比べると白鵬の完成期は史上最強かのかもしれない。好き嫌いは別として。

For those saying Asashoryu was better. Don't forget he was in his prime 20s dominating an upcoming Hakuho who was around 5 years younger and started losing toward the end. He wasn't even 30 when he retired so don't say he was washed or old. Hakuho is in a league of his own. Final score 15-14 Asashoryu. The greatest rivalry in sumo.
Akebono vs Takanohana was a far better rivalry. 21-21.
@@jasonwiggins6137 My only say with Akebono and Takanohana was that many elite wrestlers were in the same stable as Taka so they never had to fight each other in the 15 day basho. Akebono had a much more competitive path to get yushos so he didn’t win as much. The rivalry would have been more even in a way. They are definitely number 2 rivalry.
@@basics2702 Correct to a degree. Akebono was runner up 13 times. Akebono and Takanohana were battling each other as teenagers. They literally were against each other their entire career, until Akebono's retirement. Their rivalry literally brought millions of new fans to the sport and Sumo has never seen that success before or since.

Asashoryu finished 15-14 in the match, but if he hadn't left, it's very likely that Hakuho would pass the front, he improved a lot over the years and learned to face Asashoryu, so much so that in the last years of the match he won much more
Man, sumo as a sport is so great. I don’t think any sport illustrates the fighting spirit of humans as well as sumo does (even mma). Nothing is guaranteed, and sometimes the odds seem insurmountable, but these guys charge head long past their doubt time and time again.
