- Asashoryu was the most aggressive Yokozuna ever in Sumo history.Eventually this brute had faced a fate of defeated by the Greatest rikishi of all time.After getting regularly beaten by Asashōryū earlier in his career, Hakuho came to completely dominate him, winning all of their last seven regulation matches (excluding two tournament-playoff defeats) and finishing with a 14-13 record over his greatest rival at his forced retirement.

The Rivalry between Asashoryu & Hakuho was beautiful in many ways. It wasn’t one sided, there was much competitive tension between the two, you had the villain (Asa) and the hero (Hakuho). I only say that based on how Asa’s career unfortunately came to an abrupt stop. This kind of rivalry was much like in boxing where you have Fury/Wilder, meaning that they brought one hell of a draw (they had the IT factor). And once one of those variables was taken out of the equation, it’s crystal clear that sumo will not be the same for a very long time coming, if ever.
Asashoryu vs Hakuho was the instoppable force against the unmovable object. The yin and the yang. Without Asashoryu, Hakuho became the absolute uncontested GOAT, but somehow, sumo lost the fire that these two brought in their fights.
Some of the greatest matches of all time were between these two
I always thought this was the golden era of sumo, 2 Legends display such strength and techniques through out all of their bouts with each other.

若い子はなかなか相撲は見ないかもしれないけど、この当時は俺も若かったが、この2人の相撲を見だしてから相撲見るのが好きになったよ。
今はまた見なくなったけどねw

Incredible sumo! Fast paced, aggressive and both of them very even in terms of strength. It's a shame there is noone to challenge Hakuho like this nowadays! I chose to ignore that one puny henka though :P
We have Terunofuji now.We need more rikishi like Asashoryu or Harumafuji.

Missing true yokozuna fights these days.
Using western terms:
Asashoryu is stronger, more explosive, more burst, quicker first step.
Hakuho has better reach, more crafty, more dynamic with his attacks, more cheese strats.

Yeah. Hakuho has said that Asa was the mountain he (Hakuho) had to climb. And Hakuho said he wants to be the wall his juniors must get over.

Asa is the only one with winning record against Hakuho 14-13. That alone is quite remarkable given Hakuhos head to head with others is just ridiculous
And even then, only barely.
Asashoryu finished 15-14 in the match, but if he hadn't left, it's very likely that Hakuho would pass the front, he improved a lot over the years and learned to face Asashoryu, so much so that in the last years of the match he won much more

朝青龍の引退は本当に残念。残っていたら栃若、大鵬柏戸、輪湖時代に勝るとも劣らない、相撲史に残る一時代になったはず。
相撲界にとってめちゃくちゃ大きな損失。ホントに残念！ヤンチャ者でどうしようもな朝青龍。そんな彼が大好きです。
白鵬がこれだけ強い力士になれたのは朝青龍の存在が大きかった。
ただ朝青龍がああいった形で引退しなければあれだけの優勝記録は残せなかった

You can see the transition when Hakuho becomes more of a technician and learns how to use his height and reach advantage when dealing with Asashoryu. I think that's what has made Hakuho such a long-lasting champion is how he has been able to adapt and knows he can't always just use pure strength, and just has developed incredible bodily awareness in his execution.

Calling Asashoryu a brute is unwarranted. He did what he had to do to compensate for his relatively small size. Pound per pound he was better than Hakuho. His wildness was the source of his strength and eventually his downfall. Humans are complex.
