You can see the transition when Hakuho becomes more of a technician and learns how to use his height and reach advantage when dealing with Asashoryu. I think that's what has made Hakuho such a long-lasting champion is how he has been able to adapt and knows he can't always just use pure strength, and just has developed incredible bodily awareness in his execution.

The Rivalry between Asashoryu & Hakuho was beautiful in many ways. It wasn’t one sided, there was much competitive tension between the two, you had the villain (Asa) and the hero (Hakuho). I only say that based on how Asa’s career unfortunately came to an abrupt stop. This kind of rivalry was much like in boxing where you have Fury/Wilder, meaning that they brought one hell of a draw (they had the IT factor). And once one of those variables was taken out of the equation, it’s crystal clear that sumo will not be the same for a very long time coming, if ever.

Its a shame how easily sumo establishment can ban wrestlers and/or manipulate their careers. By western standards, Asashoryu was a sweetheart but by Japanese standards, he was a total bad boy that needed to be made an example of.

Although Harumafuji has more victories against Hakuho than any other rikishi, Asashoryu's victories over Hakuho seemed a lot more aggressive and dominant. Almost every match these two had felt like two apex predators battling it out. A real life Kong vs Godzilla.

For those saying Asashoryu was better. Don't forget he was in his prime 20s dominating an upcoming Hakuho who was around 5 years younger and started losing toward the end. He wasn't even 30 when he retired so don't say he was washed or old. Hakuho is in a league of his own. Final score 15-14 Asashoryu. The greatest rivalry in sumo.

@@jasonwiggins6137 My only say with Akebono and Takanohana was that many elite wrestlers were in the same stable as Taka so they never had to fight each other in the 15 day basho. Akebono had a much more competitive path to get yushos so he didn’t win as much. The rivalry would have been more even in a way. They are definitely number 2 rivalry.
