Great video brotha. For band mix tones, that bogner/v30s would sound excellent. I prefer the EVH celestions overall for this demo, but on another level is the differences between 8ohm and 16ohm speakers....cuz they have different tonal attack as well.
They absolutely do. In fact, the cab with the EVHs originally had 8 ohm EVH speakers. That forced me to run my amps at 8 ohms and I noticed a fairly big difference. So I replaced them and bingo, all my amps felt like they’d come back to life! Thanks for your kind words and thank you for watching!
Thanks for your kind words! I’m gonna be making capture packs of all my amps for Kemper, QC, ToneX and Neural Amp Capture - these will also include IRs of all 4 of my cabs. I may also put together an IR-only pack as well. Thank you for watching.
@@TheGuitarNerdShow would be awesome! I personally use Fractal products and I also tend to record my Amp through a loadbox I would love to try out these cabs with my set ups. Anyway keep it up man love this channel 🤘
It's strange how they all sounded good for different riffs. Chugs, open chords and a riff or single note solo type stuff. I think the V30 is the best suited for your style of playing. I also wonder if the cab plays tricks on your ears also. Different dimensions and different construction materials I think can add or cut certain frequencies. I have no proof of this, it's just a thought. Thanks for taking the time to post this Steve.
Exactly! They all have their areas where they shine and others where....not so much. Cabinet construction has a HUGE impact on the sound of the speakers. For proof of that, listen to a Marshall 4x12 with V30's and then listen to a Mesa Rectifier cab with V30's. The difference it night and day. Thank you for watching!
Big differences, but all sounded good. It also matters what equipment the end users is listening through. When making A/B comparisons, the auditory adjustments could be jarring to the human ear, and a sound that may seem inferior at the time of the switch, may ultimately feel better after hearing it for a while, or hearing it in the mix. So many variables!!
Bingo! And not only that, a speaker that sounds inferior may be the perfect speaker when combined with another speaker, or used with a different amp, or different mics or....like you said. So many variables. Thank you for watching!
Great Video,The Guitar Nerd,I think the vintage Marshall cab with the G 12 -65s was my favorite next to the Bogner Cab, I thing the Cabinet wood makes a difference too.
The wood and cabinet construction make a HUGE difference. If I had a Mesa 4x12 with V30s, it would sound very different from the Bogner. Nd the Bogner has two Mesa Spec V30s (those are the ones that are mic'd). Thanks for your kind words and thanks for watching!
All cabs are 16ohms. The one with the EVH speakers was 8 ohms when I bought it, but my amps sound better at 16 so I replaced the speakers with the 16ohm variant. Thank you for watching!
It’s amazing what a difference speakers make - and I haven’t even scratched the surface - there are a multitude of different speaker type, all of which offer something different. Thank you for watching!
Then add the speaker of choice to a different cab, like 2 speaker vs 4. 4 is inhernetly wider and a touch "darker" like a couple of those speakers you demoed. You can brighten a darker speaker sound by going 2 speaker vs 4 if you like the overall speaker tone. I use the Axe FX FM-9 with hundreds of cab/speaker IR's and the tonal diff is insane between cab/speaker combos,
The original EVH GB is the same as the Heritage GB with 20 watt rating. Apparently there’s some labeled as EVH now that handle 30 watts, meaning it’s based off the newer greenbacks and a different speaker.
The speakers in that cab are the 30 watt variant. I was told by someone fairly reliable that they're still essentially just a relabeled 20w GB. I CAN say that I blew a speaker in that cab a few months ago with a 100 watt amp so that lends credence to the theory that they're relabeled 20w GBs. Thank you for watching.
Thank you for watching. I'm fairly sure my G12EVHs that are marked as 30 watt are really rebranded 20w GBs based on me blowing one of them with a 100w amp. Thank you for watching.
That’s really strange. I’ve heard on another channel about EVH rated at 30 but couldn’t find this on Celestion’s website. I have heritage GB in all my cabs and love them. I can’t hear any difference to EVH, but there must be something going on with the ones marked as 30 Watt.
Each riff and lick had a different cab/speaker shine. Overall I thought the Bogner with V30's was consistantly in my top 2 for each. Kudos for the demo.
I felt either the EVH loaded cab, or the Bogner loaded cab felt the best.. the WGS loaded cab sounded quiet to my ears but didn’t sound bad. It seems like when I first started watching your RUclips stuff you had that one cab with a X pattern and it influenced me to get WGS and run them in a X pattern. Now I just have creambacks in 1 cab and mesa branded vintage 30’s in a Mesa cab.
The 1979 Marshall still has the WGS Veteran 30's and HM75's in an X pattern, but only the 30's are mic'd, so for the purposes of this video it just made more sense not to mention the 75's. Thank you for watching!
It really does. I like having the others though to sometimes blend in some different textures or for when I’m going for something totally different. Thank you for watching!
That's kinda how I use them. For more metallic sounds, my JVM or (maybe ironically) my 5150 III, I generally go with the V30's. They also work well in a double tracking scenario - hard left the G12EVHs, hard right the V30s. Thank you for watching!
Just amazing testing !!! And great playing to really show the differences...I would prefer the G12-65, not too much loss in the mids and EVERY of my fave bands did use the combination of highboosted JCM 800 with these speakers...If you reach a tone with a boost at 1 kHz it's not a good choice to use a speakers with a narrow band cut at 1 kHz...
You hit the nail right on the head. They all have their strong and weak points. I put my rig together for maximum versatility (within the bounds of what I'll be playing) & these four speaker types offer a nice contrast. Thank you for watching!
For me, in a 2x12 I like 65w or 75w creambacks. In a 4x12 I like the EVH 20w Celestion. For me I dont think there is enough bass with greenbacks in a 2x12.
The G12-65's are kinda weird - when they work with an amp, they really work well. When they don't, they REALLY don't. Generally with 80's era Marshalls they sound great! Thanks for watching!
Ya know, That speaker cab has two different types of V30s - two of them are 'regular 'V30's, the other two are Mesa spec V30's and the difference between the two typs is pretty stark. Hmmmmm, that gives me an idea for another video. Just wish I had more V30's so it wouldn't just be about two types...... Thank you for watching!
If one thing this video has displayed is why the V30 is #1 with hi gain metal. It's very very scooped and will cut through hard. Fricker can go on all he wants about how they're tired and too prevalent in todays music but it is what it is.They're loved by metal especially for a reason. I liked the way the WGS speakers retained the mids, personally. The G12s sounded almost like there was a phase issue?
I don't think there's a phase issue, but I hope to be doing some recording soon, when I get a track down I'll dive into the waveform and take a look. Thanks for bringing it up. Thank you for watching!

For a lot of heavy and metal sounds, the V30 is king. It's part of 'that' sound. But for classic rock, the G12EVH is great....it's just a 20 watt greenback. (the way they made greenbacks way back in the day)
I concur. Something you don’t see a lot, but sounds amazing, is the two together. It’s quite huge. Hopefully I’ll be demoing this before too long. Thank you for watching!
Disliked the Marshall WGS Veteran 30's. Bogner was good for some sounds, ordinary for others. My choice would be between the G12-65s and G12EVH, probably have the Marshall G12-65s just in front. Worth noting that the matching Mini Jubilee Half Stack is 2 Celestion G12 Vintage speakers, so that bodes well
I may end up getting one of those for the sake of contrast - the Marshall Vintage speaker is, essentially, a V30 but it's slightly different from a standard V30 - as are Mesa spec V30's (which is what is mic'd on the Bogner cab). Thanks for watching!
I have a cab with Marshall G12 Vintage’s(V30’s) and one with EVH GB’s..both sound great, but together they are amazing….I liked the 65’s,but didn’t care for the WGS’s…
I feel I may have done WGS a disservice showing the speakers in that capacity - they really do sound great with some different sounds, different amps etc. Thank you for watching!
Mic’ing has a huge influence … … … But based on these samples, the EVH sound nice and full in isolation … but Vintage 30s might sound/work better live or in a mix …
With my miking scheme I’m trying to get as close to the amp in the room sound as I can. It’s not 100% but it’s damn close. That said though, you’re right, miking has a HUGE influence on what we hear. On the Vintage 30’s, I’ve found they work best (for me) for a chunky, slightly more modern kind of crunch as well as some lead stuff. But those G12EVH’s are tough to beat! Thank you for watching!
@@TheGuitarNerdShow I meant, it’s impossible to mic 2 (let alone 4) different mics with the exact same positioning … which can make a very big difference in sound, as you know … so it’s inherently difficult to compare speakers in different cabs, etc
The WGS doesn’t seem to respond too well with the Jubilee. I’ve used it in other cases, live, where it’s sounded amazing. I might’ve done that speaker a disservice by choosing the Jubilee for this video. Thank you for watching!
To my ears, I can't stand the 65. I bought one from a recommendation, tried it in a 1x12 z cab and hated it, then in a splawn 2x12 with a v30 and it was god awful there (to me) as well. Basically heard the same thing here. The EVH sounded good in all the clips to me. Just one person's opinion, but that amp and that guitar combo worked well in combo with that cab specifically. Great video.
Thanks man! Yeah, the 65's not for everyone, and definitely not for every application. I will say though that when I used to use that 4x12 live, it sounded amazing - probably because the amp was dialed in for those speakers. Thank you for watching!
Ya know, it's weird - it really is dependent on what I'm playing and what sound I'm going for, amp I'm using etc. For some stuff it sounds fantastic. But I guess that's the case with pretty much everything. Thank you for watching!
I’m still firmly in the camp that the amp matters most. Speakers are right up there though. Taking the amp out of the equation then yes definitely, the speakers. I don’t agree that PRS is full of crap. I think Glenn has overblown the whole ‘pickups and wood don’t matter’ thing. I used to believe the same thing until a few years ago. I was playing a Fender Deluxe Strat (made of Ash) and built my second partscaster (Alder). When I put it together I literally relived the pickguard with the electronics from the Ash body and installed it onto the Alder body. Same identical neck (I use the neck from the MIM Deluxe for my builds). After I strung it and set it up I plugged in and the difference was very noticeable. I might not say night and day, but damn close. Enough that my singer at the time (who doesn’t play an instrument) noticed it immediately. The top end was more clear and the overall tone had more girth. At the time I was playing through a Fender Deluxe Reverb with a JHS Angry Charlie when I wanted some drive. So a fairly sparse signal path. So, that stuff does matter too, much more than Glenn and his REQ graphs show. BTW I’ve done three of these Strat builds now. All identical components all the way around. All three sound different from one another. If pickups and wood didn’t matter they’d sound identical. Thank you for watching.

Thank you for watching!
EVH and Vintage 30s are the best with excellent mids response. The guitar cut through better. Did not like the WGS at all.
Thank you for watching!
the shittiest speaker i have played is the celestion g12t75 it has too much midscoop
Celestion V30 and G12EVH are my favourites by a mile. I did NOT like the WGS speakers at all in this video.
They’re great for some applications. But in this scenario, this kind of sound, they don’t work as well.
Thank you for watching!
The WGS Veteran 30’s were the clear loser here. The EVH and Vintage 30s did it for me.
Ya know, it's weird - it really is dependent on what I'm playing and what sound I'm going for, amp I'm using etc. For some stuff it sounds fantastic. But I guess that's the case with pretty much everything.
Thank you for watching!
G12EVH absolutely the best. the others sounds cheap
Thank you for watching!
I knew speakers were important… but never this important 😮
I went a long time not knowing it either!
Thank you for watching!
Too hard to tell. If you give your ears enough time to listen they all sound pretty good!
They do acclimate, it only sounds stark when switching.
Thank you for watching!
Speakers? Oh yes. I will second that.
Thank you for watching!
They make THE MOST impact on tone hands down. PRS is a salesman first, and full.of shit, secondly!
Focus on your playing...don't get caught up in the never ending trap of chasing tone
Unfortunately great playing with crappy tone sucks. Equally does bad playing with great tone. For me it’s a two pronged sword.
Thank you for watching!
Oh look, someone trying to ride on Glenn Fricker's coattails! Gee, what a shocker!
LMAO! Nice try. If you’d watched the video you’d see I disagreed with Mr Fricker.
Thank you for watching.
Without the mix all of them sound perfect.Just different.
Great observation. It all depends on the context.
Thank you for watching!
Speakers make all the difference
HUGE difference!
