  • Newcastle Light Rail is a light rail line running through the city of Newcastle, Australia's seventh largest city. It opened in 2019, replacing an existing railway line (but using little existing railway equipment), and all sections of the line are non-electrified (overhead line-less), with no overhead lines present.
The drive system is not battery-powered, but a special structure called a hypercapacitor, which is recharged for very short periods of time at each station, and is the only such system in Australia.

Nice looking route with modern and clean trams. I might check it out next time I'm in that part of the world. Great for tourists too.

the car that runs next to the tram from 5:03 onwards is a strange looking creation. Can't have an australian video without some wierd contraption showing up
looks almost like a camping add-on, but then it has a rear window wiper and seemingly no doors, and a aerodynamic shape that suggests it took more than 5 minutes to design (as an australian I can confirm it is required that when building something silly you don't think much before you do it)

I love light rail, I spent my working years working on railway signage, refurbishing the Newcastle railway station and manufacturing railway furniture and indicators, I adore the Canberra light rail, it's super convenient BUT, I could NEVER ride the Newcastle light rail, Those incessant ANNOUNCEMENTS WOULD DRIVE ME CRAZY.

in hindsight this is one of the weirdest projects. it has not revitalized the area at all. only 6 stops less than 3km. to be a driver would take a lot of dedication to remain focused and alert on such a monotonous line.

I watched this video with great interest as it clearly shows the potential of catenary-less tram in cities to contribute to the landscape.
If anyone knows, please let me know, but I would like to know what the function is of the strip-shaped thing that is offset from the center within the road gauge starting at 7:51. In Japan, I think this is the location of the guard rails to prevent derailment, but I'm concerned because I don't think it would function that way because of the flat shape.

What does a hypercapacitor do? I never till now knew what system it uses. 🏳‍🌈

it's kind of a quick charging battery. The tram can run a couple of kilometres with it, and can charge up within a few seconds at the stops. They were invented around 20 years back, when battery technology was not good enough to power a tram at an acceptable weight. In theory trams could run up to 20 km with one charge, however that's not used in normal service, they only run stop to stop this way...
