    Happy to say that Gerard has not only gotten better as a vocalist (not only clean, but unclean: listen to his death growl guest spot on Ibaraki and any of his Reunion Tour performances where he screams), but hasn't lost his energy at all! The songs being lowered half-step down for the majority (I think Bulletproof Heart (or I guess 'Trans Am' now) is still played in its original tuning, which is Eb anyway) helped quite a bit
    I also love that he now does all his sound FX/vocal effects work from his own little console on his mic-stand now! it's so cool to see him fucking around with buttons and moving knobs and stuff and messing with his sound in real-time

      Gerard Slay what i did a lot when i started singing was a i just belted out as high as i could (even if it sounded bad) and i started doing the same exercise doug showed in this video. i did it for months and months and then i ended up with a good vocal range and i could hit a lot of high notes and not sound as rough. hope it helps!

    More advice on how to sing like them:
    1. Be born an extremely high tenor.
    2. Buy an acoustic guitar and learn how to sing in key.
    3. Yell at the top of your lungs while singing and add a lot of diphthongs.
    (What I'm basically saying is that unless you're a tenor, give up trying to sound like them because its not going to happen.)

    • @Dougzed
      @Dougzed  7 лет назад +36

      A baritone voice can still hit the same pitches as a singer like Gerard Way- but they will likely not have the same bright quality in the higher range

    • @skaterwithaboard
      @skaterwithaboard 7 лет назад +5

      Yes. They wont be "INTENSE" though. You still wont be singing "like Gerard Way." And if you watch interviews with Gerard, he's said many times that he struggles to hit a lot of notes live. He's constantly pushing his voice as far as he can go, and he's basically as high as they come. If you're a baritone, there's no way you could keep up with that.

    • @oliviajohnson5564
      @oliviajohnson5564 7 лет назад +3

      skaterwithaboard I'm pretty sure Brendon Urie can sing higher if you've ever heard his music

    • @saysthemanbehindthemask
      @saysthemanbehindthemask 7 лет назад +10

      Be Born an extremely high tenor? Way is NOT an extremely high tenor. He's just Tenor. Nothing unusual about his range he's no Mike Patton or Jeff Buckley. Most tenors you hear on radio have approximately the same range as he does. I don't know his exact range but i assure you there is nothing extreme about it. Regarding not being able to well... sound like him is a poor choice of words, let's say being able to sing his songs would be more appropriate. It IS actually possible to sing that. I am a baritone originally and it took years of practice but i surpass his range both on bottom and top. To be fair even when i just began and was just more likely shouting rather than properly singing but i could cover most of his songs anyhow. Also keep in mind that singing range and screaming are 2 different things, being able to sing high is what i consider singing range use of vocal fry etc is a totally different story. His overall vocal range is about 4 octaves, plenty of singers with this range. Anyway i hope it was informative for you. And don't discourage baritone voices from growing as singers with false information.

    • @diealistair7093
      @diealistair7093 7 лет назад +5

      Olivia Johnson but Brendon also has a vocal range of 4, nearly 5 octaves which is unusual and he's a tenor too (even tho with this vocal range he can go very deep too)

    I think people dont hear the Gerard because his voice sounds extremely similar to Vic's and not that similar to Gee's but if his voice was closer to Gee's, it would show what the techniques do more.

  • @katexavier1985

    Sorry i still dont think its like this... he has a "jelly pronouciation" that makes the sound just slips from his mouth. And he also user "Ha" sound to change and to attack notes. He has control of piano and forte sounds, and how much air he puts in the voice(whisper or shout). But his thing in mouth bc sometimes he lose his breath singing (ex: sharpests lives), and the pitch and timber is not always perfect but fits in the song bc of the interpretation. Also in "the only hope for me is you" u see his voice is made by mouth position. "Planetary go" he uses lots of stacatto... mouth mainly. Idk if he improved after return. What the video show is how "emo" singers do: chest voice mainly. Great but not specifically Gerard's technique.

      No problem, D5 is where there is another vocal break, often called the passagio. It's hard to smooth out that note.

      man! I started on Singing Success! No hate for the program but it would definitely never work for a voice like mine (very soft and without a natural loud tone).

      So how do you mainly learn and practice these days? References, or just picking up things by practicing on your own?

    • @Dougzed
      @Dougzed  7 лет назад

      I do vocal lessons once every two weeks from really good vocal teachers, then just practice what they show me for a couple weeks and book another lesson when I'm ready

    To be fair it's better not to try and sing like Gerard or Bert. I mean exactly like them... because technically their styles are not very healthy. Also their ranges are not that high really.

    • @Dougzed
      @Dougzed  7 лет назад +5

      I think Bert McCracken has amazing technique actually :)

    • @saysthemanbehindthemask
      @saysthemanbehindthemask 7 лет назад

      Ouch! Really? He had a surgery on his vocal cords a few years back i believe. That is not a sign of a good technique! I believe it was generally because of how he did the screaming incorrectly but still that is vocal technique overall everything combined it had a negative affect on his vocal health. If i remember correctly he didn't scream on his live shows after the operation at all, not sure about now... have not been following their activity for a few years now. But even back when they were relatively new the show on their DVD from "Taste of Chaos 2005". The use of autotune in post production is quite heavy, so even before he had vocal health issues he was struggling with live shows. Don't get me wrong both Bert and Gerard are highly talented song writers and performers, they influenced me quite a bit back in the day... but also from them i learned what NOT to do, a great lesson for me but at their expense. But still in comparison i think Gerard is a better singer. At least he did not have any surgeries that i know of, i could be wrong. I feel like Gerard's stuff is more difficult to sing too. Bert seems to have more of a straight forward approach about his parts.

      "I had a polyp or a nodule develop on my left vocal chords from screaming over the years. Its fairly common amongst a lot of singers and usually just sing through them but mine was so bad it was kind of stopping me from singing half of my register.
      imaginary enemy album cover It was pretty scary, I couldn’t talk for 3 weeks to a month and just not knowing if I would get my voice back the way that I had it before but everything was a success and seven years later I’m doing great.
      My voice has never been stronger, so recording Imaginary Enemy was awesome and most of the recordings of the vocals we did were as natural and human as they possibly could be so we tried to take either the first or second take to get that natural sound" - Bert
      Yep you we're right. I just went and listened to The Used- on the albums and recordings he has great vocal technique!

    • @saysthemanbehindthemask
      @saysthemanbehindthemask 7 лет назад

      Yup. I did not hear this album. So i can't comment really. Last one i heard was Artwork. But to me album recording really does not qualify as a proof of great technique, it certainly shows singer's skill but ultimately only takes make it to the final product. Live performances to me really shows their skill. Of course there is a lot circumstances... so i try not to judge by one performance alone and say that the singer sucks. I dig up as many as i can before i pass judgement and from what i recall i was not too impressed with his live's.
      Not saying that recording in studio is an easy job, i think it's the second hardest thing for a singer to do. The first hardest thing would be to sing the same live. Well at least that's my perspective.
      As for singers saying oh i feel great now blah blah. I don't always buy it. For instance Corey Taylor had a complete change in sound of his screaming right after Iowa. And he claims that it was his choice to change how he sounds to sort of more high pitched. I call 100% bullshit on that. He just was no doing it in a healthy way originally and did abuse alcohol and drugs prior to recording Vol.3 and he really never sounded the same ever since. He wrote in his book regarding this period so he sort of contradicts himself. Than yes he sort managed to do his 1999 style of screaming on Grey Chapter, but he can not do it live. He definitely sounds better in recent years but that comes with experience he just cleaned up and got smarter, but really he serves as me as an example of what not to do lol, because i used to try and sound like him, didn't last. Which leads me back to my point studio recording and live performance are totally different things. Dig up any performance of Slipknot - Disasterpiece after 2003 and than look up the same song before 2003. I know that most people don't notice this kind of things but i am sure you as a singer should be able to spot the difference. He never sounds the same and never will. Neither will Bert in his Live shows. Sadly if you lose your voice once you can't regain it... well at least that's what i see from other well known singers.
