Exploring Big Rivers, Throwing Big Lures, for the Biggest WILD Brown Trout (Rapala Countdown Minnow)

  • Eric and I finally got back on the water targeting our favorite salmonoid species, the wild brown trout. Our goal was to find the biggest ones in the area. Eric has been fishing this area for the past couple weeks and mentioned how these fish weren't feeding like usual; most likely due to the big fly hatches. Whenever I see this I like to either downsize and match the hatch, or throw something extraordinarily huge. In this case, we were going for giants only so I decided to throw in the Rapala Countdown 11! Undoubtedly a bold move since these are trout were talking about, wild ones in specific. What could they possibly be feeding on thats that big? - Baby wild Brown trout! That's what. The first spot of the day produced the first 20+ incher on the brown trout countdown which reassured my confidence in the lure. Next spot we are about to leave after seeing a huge Native brookie, probably close to 17-18 inches that followed the countdown in, then I hook into another 20 incher out in the thick current! We were pretty mind blown at this point since landing 1 fish on that lure was surprising enough. Getting a second really told us that these browns are keying onto it. And we know that trout like to key onto one specific lure or presentation usually so we found the lure! We keep fishing and I land the biggest one of the day, again on the 5 inch brown trout colored jerkbait! Theres something about the swimming action of the countdown that gets those hits from big, aggressive browns. We finish the day off at arguably the best looking spot and another biggin hits the countdown on my first cast! That was the last biggin of the day but well surely be back for round 2! Probably one of the most epic wild trout bites I've potentially ever seen. Going out knowing there's alot to figure out and committing to the send feels great, especially when it all works out! Such a sick day, hope you guys enjoy the video and get out there on your own sends! If I'm not mistaken round 2 of the brown trout beatdown is going down tomorrow!

Glad you had fun man. That happens to everyone that fishes any river or lake for browns. They are territorial and will hit anything that looks like a threat especially in low light early in the morning or later at night. Super fun!

Thought you were using big baits… decent fish though. Upsize 1-2x, they’ll hit em.
