My wife and I saw him live in Atlanta. The couple to me left where his neighbor and told us stories of his son and their son. The Lady to my wife’s right was a group who had tickets to all his U.S. shows. It was a super show. Knowing his songs and singing along with him is not the same as being there. The emotions he gave off the stage was real. Of all the concerts I have been to his touched me the most

Leonard is about the only one who sings the song in its entirety (or at least as he originally sang it). You never hear the stanza with the "Dove was moving too" line from anyone else. They seem to fear its allusion. But listening to Leonard its obvious that this was the core of the song and the part in which he puts more feeling in it than any other place in the song! And rightly so, for he knew that the core emotion in life is the making of life.

Absolutely - Cohen was a poet first and foremost, and I'm sure he meant us to hear all the words. He spent years writing this song and it's a crime if we ignore what he had to say.

I've always seen this as a song is about finding and losing a great love; about the thrill of sexual/spiritual awakening with someone to whom you are drawn, magnetically, and then the grief of breaking up with them.

@@ewok_soup That's right: one of his themes - maybe his most prominent - is the inseparability of the flesh and spirit.

Love is one of the most real things you can feel besides the holy spirit moving through you, and this song is about the struggles that come from love the passion but not only physical love but devine love. The song is many conversations, taking place from King David talking to God to being corrupted by his love for Bathsheba into killing his friend who was her husband. Then Samson being betrayed by Delilah because he put his love before his covenant with God as a Nazarite. And lastly Cohen saying there is no split between his faith and in his love, but that they are one and the same. To love and to be loved is not a victory march and God's love doesn't mean things will be easy, it may be hard and it may be lonely but to be alive and to understand the feeling of passion, love, understanding, and the spirit of God is to be content.

I love this song. Saw her Bathing on the roof" David and Bathsheba. "Broke your throne and cut your hair" Samson and Delilah. But its a kitchen chair so it's about domesticity, maybe marriage. The battle between Flesh and Spirt, Marriage and Independence, Love and Freedom. Maybe everyone has to make choices between self actualisation and the sacrifices we have to make for others. xx

It is a beautiful song and it also seems to get a little mixed up at times (although I'm sure Leonard knew what he was doing). King David takes in Bathsheba and next thing you know, she's cutting his hair like he was Samson. Have I made a mistake here? It's not a rude song at all and I'm sure Leonard meant it to be very reverent.
