  • On Brisbane's northside theres a memorial to a Hero Submarine from WW1, a long forgotten race track and a re-named pub that started life as a Cobb & Co staging post.
Starting at the Ampol service station in the Brisbane suburb of Castledine. We travel the northern route out of Brisbane before the Bruce Highway crossed the Pine River at Bald Hills.
These bridges were completed and opened to traffic in 1975.
    BONNY VIEW HOTEL.
Built by William Orr in 1865, was originally called the Edinburgh Castle Hotel.
For many years it served as a staging post for the Cobb & Co stage coaches traveling between Brisbane and Gympie. In 1885 Micheal Goodwin applied to take over the licence from the Orr family but with the new line to Gympie being completed in 1888 the hotel failed and the licence was revoked.
In late 1888, Goodwin and his wife Bridget, applied for a licence for a new Edinburgh Castle hotel on Gympie Road at Kedron. construction started in 1892 and still stands in that location at Kedron. The original hotel at Bald Hills was eventually re-opened in 1935 as the Bonny View Hotel.
    THE 1946 MOTOR RACING SPECTACULAR
The Queensland Motor Sporting Club was formed in January of 1938 to run motor sport events previously run by the RACQ. Its first event was a scavenger hunt followed by a sprint meeting at Strathpine. When the war ended in 1945, the club looked to resume activities. It discovered that there was a nice bitumen air strip on private property, previously used as an RAAF runway.
At just 7/10ths of a mile (1126m) it was too short for a good flying 1/4 mile but perfect for the traditional standing 1/4 mile drag race and also a mile and a half circuit.
11th of August 1946, billed as, by Brisbane's Courier Mail, "The largest motor racing program in Australia.", was held at the Strathpine Airstrip.
Racing continued at the airstrip until 1960 when the Lakeside circuit was opened just down the road. By 1961, the bulldozers had moved in and another housing development was built.
    RUTH WHITFIELD MEMORIAL PARK.
Theres a bushland reserve on Anzac Avenue at Kallangur that was part of the original alignment of Anzac Avenue. it was moved and improved in the mid 1960's. Almost straight away the locals started petitioning for this land to become a bushland reserve. Ruth Whitfield was on of these locals who worked with many organisations and sought support from the Kallangur Lions Club.
Ruth passed in 1972 and in 1993, The Ruth Whitfield Memorial Park was named in her honour.
Its also the home to the memorial for the submarine HMAS AE2.
The AE2 was the first submarine to penetrate the Dardanelles in Turkey during WW1. it was built in England in 1913 as one of two, state of the art, submarines for the newly formed RAN.
Early in the morning of April, 25th 1915, AE2 made a daring under water passage through the heavily mined and fortified Dardanelles. On the #0th of April, AE2 was shelled and severely damaged by the torpedo boat SULTANBISAR, the crew scuttled the sub and surrendered. The crew was saved by the attacking boat.
Lost for 83 years, AE2 was discovered by a Turkish dive team in 1998.

Brought back some great memories of my youth in the 70' and 80's. Did my secondary schooling at St Paul's Bald Hills and spent many a Friday night at the Bonney View in my early working life. A very different time and place then.👍
