geetarbube I mean, when the distortion was kicked in on the Chapman, it sounded better to me, which goes to explain how the brand seemingly is for the Metal player market, but overall in style, and looks, and sound, the Gretsch was way better

Why should it be out of the equation? Those guitar are made in korea, the same dudes that make prs se, ltd, and schecter. For £500, thats a very competitive price and not everyone has seen their videos or heard about Chapman guitars. Its a good way to advertise decent quality guitar. I dont see why because some viewers have seen them, others, who still wants to see it should not be allowed because you dont want chapman guitars in an andertons video?

I may or may not be fine with it's construction (because I haven't felt one on hand) but I definitely hated it's sound. The pickups weren't just bright, they were too thin. They were basically shite.

I feel like Captain Lee is more upset about things like this than he lets on. I know that I would be. Come on, Rob. So why wouldn't he choose something specifically made for him?
No matter what he does, he can't win for people like you. He's either a sellout, or doesn't back his own product because they suck according to your logic.

The one with a maple neck & simple pickups is definitely not a good guitar ... !
Bought one after watching many videos with pure joy for its sound, and sent it back right after getting it, full of disapointement ...
It lacks sustain, even when you're not plugging it, sounds like dead plastic wood, no bass and mediums at all, very agressive B-E high strings, fat chunky neck, volume pot not progressive at all ...
First time being disapointed at a Fender mex guitar ...

      The Woman With No Head
Taste is a personal thing; I wouldn't even buy a Fender/Squier or any stratty thing. I loath single coils, I detest vibratos on guitars, and I hate bolt on necks. My favourite guitar, which I still own after 25 years, is a slab body, Hamer Slammer series (small Slammer logo, so the first gen), LPJ-looking guitar with set, chunky neck, stoptail piece and dual humbuckers (very traditional, I know), but my buddy swears with his Ibanez with toothpick 4-bolt neck and hss setup.
And you know what? Together it works as a charm, especially over our Marshall amps (mine a DSL201, his a "can you already call it vintage" 8080 mk1.)

  • @iwiggs6870
    @iwiggs6870 7 лет назад +285

The Chapman Guitars issue is an interesting issue when it comes to these sort of videos. Rob's unfortunately in a position where he's gonna do the wrong thing either way. If he picks the Chapman, he's a sellout who's just trying to promote his stuff. If he DOESN'T pick the Chapman, he looks like he doesn't back his own gear.
These sort of Hypothetical "What-Would-You-Buy-If?" videos are great fun, but the decisions get questionable if the Chapman product is selected. I think in the future, any video like this which Rob is involved in should ban Chapman guitars from being a choice, with an acknowledgement that if Rob DID have a choice, he would automatically pick the appropriate Chapman. That way the Chapman brand gets a tasteful minor plug, without looking inferior or like it's the lesser choice.

    • @oddmushasmr

    • @TantricConvulsions
      @TantricConvulsions 7 лет назад +7

It also might behoove them to include more than just Rob and Lee in the video. That way, even if Rob does pick the Chapman (which is fair, as that would also be one of my choices for guitars under 500), you have more than just Lee going "OK well here's something other than Chapman."

As much as I like both of you, and as much as I absolutely love my Chapman bass, I was quite disappointed to see Rob pick a Chapman. I see you play them in so many videos and I absolutely love them, but it'd be nice to hear something else from time to time. This is AndertonsTV, not ChapmanTV.
What the Captain said in the beginning was right. There is no 'best' guitar, only what feels best for you. I understand that a Chapman guitar would feel best for Rob, but let's be honest here. Lee had to stop Rob from talking because it was turning into a Chapman commercial.
All this advertising is having the wrong effect on me. At first I was hyped about all the new guitars, but they have been used in so many vids, and they have been advertized so many times, that I don't feel attracted to them anymore. On the contrary, it wants to make me look at other brands. I used to like the feeling of being involved in the design of the guitars, nowadays I feel like I'm watching any other brand's advertisement videos.
I get that they are great guitars, and that you want to sell them. That's why we all work, to earn money. But please Rob, for the love of every guitarist watching this, stop shoving them in our faces like that. Keep the Chapman guitars to your own channel, and show us what we can expect to find in the Andertons store (which this channel is about), because these videos lately make it seem like all you can find in the store are a few Fender and Squier guitars, a new bass line up, and a buttload of Chapmans.
All that being said, I still love you and what you do. Again, I love Chapman guitars, and I can't wait for news on the new basses, but please. The self promoting has to stop at some point.
Captain Lee picked an amazing guitar btw!

THINCOVER to be fair, Chappers always seems to dial in a very thin tone. I'm sure he has a good sense of what works well in a band or cuts through a mix but it doesn't sound anywhere near as good in isolation. Lee, being a home player will dial in something much more pleasing to the ear when played on its own. It doesn't make for an easy guitar comparison though.

Well, I can understand where you're coming from, but I wouldn't go so far as to say Chapman has a big ego. I mean, we have to make sure to look at the guy objectively without projecting any of our subjective emotional biases onto him if we want to judge him fairly. I haven't seen Rob say or do anything that could be called objectively egotistical.
And yeah ... I'm pretty sure Rob knows he isn't Slash. xD
At the same time, Rob makes music that many people love, and I'd consider him a very good guitarist. You don't have to be the "best" guitarist to make music for people. I like hearing him play. :) (even though the playing he did in this specific video was definitely not his best. ;p)

I think Rob was a bad choice to be in the video, because if you design guitars, you make them have everything you want in them. Therefore his guitars are effectively customised for him. Why would he look at anything else? So it instantly looks like a Chapman promo. Would you get Paul Rivera or Bruce Keir to pick their favourite amps? No. Bad form Andertons, bad form.

The thing is, half of the presenters on the Andertons channel also work for Chapman Guitars (or have a stake in them). They'd have to choose someone like Danish Pete to pick an axe.
Even worse, almost all of the presenters have sponsorship deals to sell guitars from certain brands, such as Danish Pete and Duesenberg Guitars.
That said, will they be biased towards a given guitar because of their financial interests? Not necessarily. Lee co-owns Chapman Guitars, but he grabbed a Gretsch. I think Rob's whole issue is that he seriously likes his own product so much that they tend to get the nod over other brands in many cases. Yes, he still loves other brands as well (PRS, Gretsch, Fender, etc), but he's going to have an internal bias towards the stuff he helped design.

Edit: I feel I should expand. The video is on the channel of a shop that makes its money by selling instruments. It features two guys with a shared interest in a guitar brand. A guy makes a comment basically saying that the constant pushing of that brand is actually having the opposite effect and turning customers off. An opinion that's been mentioned several times in the comments for this video. So yeah, I would say it does have value actually. But then along comes Darren, the man who attempts to take some stand of superiority and talk about civil, adult discussion. However Darren is also the guy who responds to the original post like a 12 year old boy with his "do you want a cookie or a medal?" comment. Therefore I'll refer you back to my last sentence before the edit.

You guys have been in this industry for a long time and it surprises me that neither of you anticipated the shit storm that would follow what happened in this video and didn't appreciate it was a bad idea before you uploaded it. Lee even looked pissed off when he said 'this isn't an advert for chapman guitars' and Rob basically hit a chord as loud as he could over him speaking. Appreciate you guys want to sell as much Chapmans as you can but maybe separate videos to show the Chapman range and what's available for what pricing, rather than blatant self absorbed advertising in this type of video. The fact Rob has now posted another video with him and Rabea trying to explain away his reasoning for picking a Chapman shows one of two things, 1. He knows he fucked up, 2. He simply can't see why people are annoyed with this video, which is pretty worrying.

I got super excited when Rob found that musicmaster. It's a model I'm very curious to see tested by a professional because someday I might purchase one.
...then came the Chapman. I'm not mad, just disappointed.

Great vid guys and clearly no bias towards Chapman Guitars ;) . The Andertons RUclips channel is the only thing stopping me going insane from waiting to see David Gilmour Live at Pompeii. Here's hoping I'll see myself in the crowd!!!!!

Would've been far more entertaining to have seen the duo sonic. I wouldn't even consider buying a chapman at this point; constantly having the product shoved down your throat makes in increasingly less appealing. People say "Theres no such thing as bad publicity" but honestly this is just getting boring hope they stop. They should just make a Chapman guitar channel and actually show some different stuff on this channel. There was a time i found these videos enjoyable wish i could still say that.

I understand the sentiment, but it's somewhat hard to find a guitar company where the CEO isn't a berk. Henry Juszkiewicz (Gibson) and Andy Mooney (Fender) aren't exactly people who I think would play fair.

I love you guys! Keep it up!
I have a few ideas for videos...
    1. Epiphone stock vs epiphone with Gibson pickups. Does it get you closer??
    2. Liquid challenge! Chappers has 10 coffees, the captain has 10 beers. Does the playing improve??
    3. Left handed Strat restrung ala Hendrix challenge
    4. Frankenstein challenge! Build a guitar from various bodies, necks, and pickups from disassembled guitars
    5. ?????

I feel like it kind of defeats the premise of this video by playing sub £500 guitars through an amplifier rig worth in excess of £1000.
I understand talking about how the guitar feels, neck and fret material e.t.c. but ultimately it comes down to how the guitar sounds. Truth be told, if you was to play 95% of the guitars Andertons stock through the Victory amplifiers they will sound amazing. Which is good for Victory but not for the people that can't afford them.

    • @SlimeyGuitarStrings
      @SlimeyGuitarStrings 7 лет назад +2

Josh Drury I think the idea is to judge the guitars based on what they're capable of. If you put two affordable guitars through bad amps they'll sound bad. If you put two best of the best guitars through a crap amp they'll still sound bad.
I don't think it's fair to base a guitar on how you could hear it. Let it have a chance. Some guitars still sound bad through any amp. To me this tells me more about the guitar itself. Amps and guitars are separate entities after all.

    • @joshdrury896

Davis Phillips ... I get what you're saying man but... Could you not put an affordable guitar through an affordable amp and meet in the middle?

I like Rob , but enough of his guitar company comments . He doesn't own a guitar company he has as guitar company making them for him , anyone with some money to rub together can have guitars built and a name slapped on them. When he talks about his line he makes it sound like he was at the factory this morning signing paychecks to his employees.

If I had 500 for a new guitar right now. I'd either get a Yamaha Revstar or a Fender Duo Sonic hs. If it was used I'd jump strait on an ibanez Prestige! I'm surprised they never chose a musician sterling or PRS SE standard. Of all the new Chapman standard guitars the traditional for me are the best!

I recently purchased the Chapman ML-1 Trad in coffee and I love it. I live in California and happened to be in the London area. I took a train to Guildford and tried out the ML1 and buying it seemed like a no-brainer (grant you, there is no such thing as a no-brainer). This is a very cool, Strat-like, but different guitar. I've already played an audition with it and I'm playing it right now. It sits alongside my proper American Telecaster (my Go-To guitar), and my two SGs (one of which is a custom). What's with the anonymous keyboard critics who feel free to comment on a guitar that they have never tried? There is absolutely no legitimacy in that.

Good concept, but caught between two stools. "Something different and fun under £500" works for the Gretsch, but looking at the Andertons site, you could also pick up an Epiphone Wilshire Phantomatic with money to spare, or a Mexican Duo-Sonic or even a Danelectro 56, and all of those take you in different tonal directions.

Just a little advice, when we see the total shot, with Captain and Chappers, they are out of focus. A suggestion to the cameraman, lock the focus so it doesn't move around.
