  • Uma felt like an outcast in class when she began secondary school. “It was me versus 39 other students. It’s like feeling so alone when you are surrounded by everyone.”
Not knowing how to cope, she began to self-harm and developed suicidal thoughts. When her parents found out, things got worse. Seeing the school counsellor didn’t help, either.
Things only turned around for Uma when friendship blossomed between her and friends who share a common interest in comics. “When so many people tell you they care about you, you don’t want to end up hurting yourself.”
Uma’s since learnt to deal with her negative feelings in a different way - by losing her knife and keeping a suicide prevention kit.
“Every time something good happens, I find something that is related to the memory and put it in a Ziploc bag, and then also put it in the shoe box. Whenever I'm like having a really, really tough time, like I want to commit suicide or something, I will open up that shoebox, and I start browsing through all the memories. I’d tell myself: ‘Come on, you've gone through so much, so why give up now?’”

It takes a great courage for a person to open up and talk about this topic. I really admire this wonderful lady for sharing her story.

What a brave girl. I hope indeed she gets more help -- the professional kind but also help from friends and other family members/relatives. I guess like most school systems all over, guidance counsellors are lazy and useless and school administration just couldn't care less about their students who could be silently suffering from isolation and loneliness and bullying.

Wow... this has really helped me cope with my conditions. Just knowing that there are people out there who are in the same dark state as me really helps...

I'm glad she found her bestfriend and introduced her to the other friends as well. We are social creatures, we thrive when we feel we belong. Also the kindness from other people could save lives.

I can truly understand how she felt when she was in school.I faced almost the same thing when I was in her situation, the school counselor was helpful in the beginning but not so much after a couple of months, the teachers was of no help at all. Thanks to all that I didn't even finish secondary 4 and still suffer PTSD till this day.I hope with more people sharing their experience, something will be done in school and help students to understand and cope with their mental health because it is real and it can really mess you up.

I am an avid mental health awareness advocate and spoken word performer, and I love this so much. I travel the country trying to bring that awareness on stages, in classrooms, hospitals, and on my RUclips channel, so I get excited when I see other advocates.

But if you often look into the boxes, then you will be less happy because Happinesd is like Gossen law of Economy (the more you consume it, more less value you get)

Why would the mother hit her child when she’s already hurt?

Some people really take their children for granted, and they treat them terribly because of it. Sick!
