This is so sad. My friend did an eyelid lifting surgery to make her eyes bigger brighter. All of her friends told her she looked so much younger. A couple years later, her eyes went back to the original look and what's left are two scars on her brows that refused to disappear as her surgeon claimed. She had urged me to do the same. I'd never fall into that trap. Feeling beautiful comes from inside of us, not from others praises. While others may compliment you on your suddenly acquired beauty, deep down nobody really cares about your beauty.
@@бронза.вафля.конус she's in denial, sadly. We were prepping for an event and she asked me to help her trim her brows. I told her it's hard to make them look good with those scars. I had to paint her brows over them. She didn't say a thing.
@@zeegorman1865 honestly surgery seems worth it as an idea. But the reality is, I've never seen a single person who got cosmetic surgery and they 1. Look amazingly better in (natural) photos and irl 2. Require zero use of makeup in daily life (cause wtf is the point of paying hundreds of thousands if you still have to use makeup? Eff that) 3. They're now satisfied with their appearance and they look natural and not like they got obvious work done Not a single one.
I'm grateful to be blessed with an ordinary face and weight. but I totally understand those that chose to go under the knife. all that's left is to make plastic surgery more advance, safe, lasts longer and more accessible. Everyone deserves to be beautiful. I get nasty remarks from people even with my normal look. Imagine those that are born with features they inherited or scars from unfortunate accidents. People are very cruel. More so in east Asian countries where change from societal tradition is almost impossible. What's worse it affects livelihood, I know because many companies in east Asia hire based on looks. Who will stand and fight against that bias when almost everyone there is superficial?
@@brocktoon8 Why was it important that you not have had any work done for this man? Why was it important to him? Is it because he thinks that only women with borderline personality disorder get plastic surgery or something? What doo you mean by the term "bullshit game"?
Because they know about the health risks that are involved and the long term deterioration many patients experience, which has then to be fixed again. Of course for another nice chunk of money.
Watching this documentary amplified my fear on beauty standards and plastic surgery in China. I remember when I first came to China in 2018. I just started joining a gym and this trainer was measuring my calves and he literally told me that my calves were huge [They are muscular]. That I needed to get them slimmer because girls looked gorgeous when they have skinny legs. I looked at him and told him to that he should get his double chin removed to look more handsome and to mind his own business. He instantly went silent and never spoke about my body again. But the pressure to look a certain ideal way is enormous.
Don't worry! To some extent, China is more diverse than the United States. If you go back to 3000 years ago, you will even see dozens of different races here, such as short blacks. In modern China, there are still great differences in various regions, such as eating habits, height, shape, appearance, skin color, etc. some people look skinny, and they will consider facial surgery, while others will choose protrusion and kyphosis. This is hardly a problem. It just satisfies the fantasy of a certain heterosexual group, rather than the mainstream aesthetic concept. Any form of surgery is obvious, They usually have similar faces or exaggerated figures.
As a Chinese American, I've had "zhao fen er" or "ears that catch wind" my whole life, and they have always been one of my biggest insecurities. When I was a teenager, I begged my mom to let me undergo an otoplasty to pin back my ears, but (thankfully) she said no. After watching this video, I just wanted to remind everyone and myself that beauty standards literally change by the day. No use beating (or cutting) yourself up to fit them momentarily.
Elf ear enhancement is a big shock for me. Decades ago people hated their ears being too obvious and even do surgery to “pull” back and hide their ears.
People used to say black people are ugly because they have big lips, now every white girl wants to have big lips like a black woman. Big lips surgery is becoming common in China too.
My father - ex surgeon - told me : "Make a little cut on a tomato and it'll rot faster than the others." 😵 Then he said: "Have surgery only if it's extremely necessary." 🤔
I worked with a young Chinese woman (30) and she was obsessed with her looks … she hated the way she looked and was so critical of herself (she was gorgeous by the way). No amount of trying to convince her she was beautiful ever took hold. She said she was suicidal at times because of it … I felt so bad for her. On the flip side, I realized how self-absorbed she was and that self-absorption is a characteristic that I personally think is a detriment to gaining friends and healthy relationships. Perfectionism is like trying to catch your own shadow … there will always be someone prettier, smaller, more physically attractive/fit. We should celebrate the fact that the differences in appearance is what makes us all unique.
I used to be like that. Had so many men and women tell me how attractive I was and they didn’t understand why I was so insecure. Long story short, people need to work on their inside. Self love and what passions they have besides their looks. I still put in effort in looking my appearance but In not fixated on them. I have other things going on in my life. People need to grow emotionally or mentally. Funny enough, the meanest people I’ve ever met were the least attractive ones.
Even with these surgeries, these people you see online, when you see them fully physically, is like seeing something different, and they photo shop almost everything.
So true! If you have one too many surgeries your face would look shiny and will crinkle in a weird way. And it becomes obvious if you don't wear make up. And u also can't gain weight again this will misaligned the implants or the fillers and that will make it even worst.
I’ve seen a Chinese girl with her eyes and nose done but it’s pretty obvious. Her nose was super pointy like Michael Jackson didn’t look natural at all. She has massive eyelids with scar tissue. With makeup I’m sure u can hide the eyes but it looked super obvious
I was wondering if the redhead-white skin (milky-ivory white) was a photoshop; makeup on face, neck, arms, entire body; or some injection or tan remover. I've seen plenty of actors (eg Sabrina Lloyd) that have gone from dark peach to the redhead-white skin tone. Anybody know?
Chinese people want skinny calves, paler skin, and slimmer faces while in other parts of the world people tend to want more muscular calves, tanner skin, and strong cheeks. No one is happy. Social media has made everyone miserable, a constant billboard on your phone -_-
Now I understood why so many Chinese actors and actresses have elves ears. I used to wonder why the girls wore miniskirts exposing their sickly looking chopstick legs. So, chopstick legs are actually an asset .😄
horrible how the beauty industry takes advantage of our insecurities like that, because some procedures can actually be fatal, apart from all the mental damage of these strict standards. notice how there are specific standards in every country, where the industries pick what people don't possess and markets it as desirable.. but the problem is how these standards constantly change.. how can we ever be satisfied?
@@mashakalinkina7207 Yeah that poor dude who's like "elf ears are absolutely necessary" made me feel a deep sorrow for these people. How do you even wrap your brain around it? Dropping thousands of dollars and enduring excruciating pain just so your ears stick out like 2% more? That's bonkers.
@@catechin29 Yeah beauty standards are ever changing! 'Dumbo' ears are now socially accepted in China just because they perceive that it makes your face looks smaller. I wonder if people are unpinning their ears as such
Let me get this straight: She went to the gym. Was already perfectly slim. Hated how her calves looked. Didn’t do any real research about the calf-reduction surgery, and regrets it now knowing the lifetime of damage she will have to endure. Learn to love yourself before you hate yourself, people!
no one talks about how growing up "ugly" can f you up in so many ways it makes you feel alone in a sense because none of my friends understand anything I have been through
like how we peer pressure over here in china, u worry about the huge dent in your pockets for beauty, u worry about pain inflicted in cosmetic surgery , but u sure arent worried being ugly your whole life. yep its really tough to be a mere 5 or 6 over here.
I almost cried watching this documentary. I wish I could save these people from being insecure about their beauty. How could I, having insecure about pinning one's ears back, and almost going for surgery on them, be suddenly the most beautiful person in China because I possess them now? I realised now that beauty standards are manufactured, and I think being a good person in character is the best gift you can ever give to the world. Yes I am ugly in looks, but I am happy to be me. If someone here is ever insecure about their looks, please never ever change, work on socializing skills and negotiation. Work on building your knowledge on current affairs and critical thinking. I think these skills are much more important than beauty. To someone reading this, you are already beautiful! Now just live on and get more experience! Good luck!
sad thing is people tend to follow majority, there is a documentary on koreans obsession with plastic surgery in korean the documentary telling a story of a guy who been told his face is not according on our company view while getting a job as an engineer in a factory, thus that guy got plastic surgery. I just hope this trend dont get to my country, study loans already bad enough plus now i have to get loans for "ideal" face which (i hope i dont offense anyone here) to me all looked exactly the same face. what's the unique in everyone looking the same?
I cried too, but then elf ears triggered bit of smirk. didn't laugh at anyone, but felt sorry if this is real... also, i want some chin gril now :) edited pref. but no chopstik legs
Some of these people are clearly overdoing it and prioritizing beauty over all else, which is harmful - but I think the development of medical technology allowing people to change parts of themselves they don’t like, thus allowing them to pursue whatever else in life (friendships, relationships, education, career, passions etc) while being confident in their appearance can be a true gift. The key is to understand that appearance isn’t everything, but honestly we’re all free to decorate and change our bodies how we please even if other people don’t see the value in it.
I was a tween when skinny legs were very trendy. I had naturally thicker legs and I remember so many people kept telling me that it was because I didn't diet enough. Then the curvy, thick kind of body shape replaced that trend. Suddenly everyone complimented the way I look, but now the once thin eyebrows I had that were a thing, no longer applies to the current beauty standards of thick eyebrows. I realized this one thing. It never mattered. I had always been in the same body, just the trends were changing. The day I decided what weight *I* wanted to be, what clothes *I* wanted to wear, because that's what I wanted for myself and etc was the day I felt a weight lifted from my shoulders. It is most freeing not caring what other people would think.
This is why I don't give opinions of people's looks, it's so superficial. You can compliment their makeup or their necklace because that's what they choose and not their body shape cuz that's just genetics sometimes
I can relate to this. My calves are thick naturally. People made fun of me, called me elephant legs, or said I should never wear a dress. I am glad I overcame that now and be happy with how my body looks.
There’s this thing in art called Same Face Syndrome, which, as the name suggests, is when you start drawing the exact same face all the time for all your characters. The only way to distinguish them from one another is their hair/clothes. As an artist, I can’t imagine the world all looking the same. It would not only be the most aesthetically boring place to live, but it would also mean the uniqueness of each feature wouldn’t exist. And in my years of portrait art, I can surely say that I have never found a face ‘ugly’, I’ve only ever found them worth drawing.
The ideal is being not so much beautiful, as generic and unremarkable...and it's not just China either, look at all the Kim K clones and Kpop idols everywhere
I feel so bad for the woman who is left with the fail breast surgery and a debt she can't pay off. How can they do that with an already miserable woman? We definitely need law and regulations about plastic surgeries and beauty loans.
She is a prisoner to that loan, in a way the west would never. That country is not okay and getting worse. It’s terrible that these are victims of societal abuse but have no choice other than to survive

You're not wrong but that's been the case for many generations as well. This increase in being deeply unhappy in your own body (because of how easily it is to compare ourselves to others nowadays) can be traced back to the 1900s. Look at the chewing and cigarette diets or the heroin chick trend. This isn't new, it's the way it's always been only now plastic surgeries are more advanced and everyone is more chronically online. If those women in the 1930s who were doing the grapefruit diet could have had a belly tuck, they would've
the problem is not their physical appearances. the problem is in their perception of what's beautiful & low self esteem. they should talk to a therapist not go under the knife.
My heart goes out to these people in the documentary. I've been there too, battling severe acne my whole life. What's even sadder is that some of the harshest comments came from my own family, fueling my insecurities. So, I started working, and I poured money into my skin by going to a fancy skin clinic. They pitched me an expensive plan, and I endured the pain, all in pursuit of what everyone calls 'good' skin. My skin is better now, but acne scars still linger, and hormonal pimples drop by unannounced. When I tried to quit the treatments as I was afraid I'd never feel 'enough' if I kept chasing society's standards, the clinic kept pushing more, saying my skin still had some issues such as pigmentation, scars, textures, dullness, but fortunately, I decided to stop!.... then, I learned to truly love and appreciate myself, flaws and all. I've even come to embrace the pimples and scars, being kinder to myself. It's like breaking free from a prison. Watching this plastic surgery documentary, I couldn't help but shed a tear. I wish I could tell them how incredibly beautiful they are, just as they are.

can we talk about how filters are being used in the after photos! I’m stuck at how different Ying Ying’s face appears in the documentary’s non filtered image compared to her social media app posts and videos. Not only are people getting surgery, they are using filters to make it look like the surgery did more than it actually did! It’s really sad how so many of these people who already have their own unique beauty are striving for a fake cookie cutter beauty :(
Spending money and life on trying to impress people that don't even know us seems like a waste of money and life. You can get more money but you only get one life

For us it's either do what other people tell us or suck it up and carry on with our lives. Self confidence is not really a thing outside of the West. So, they are not jealous. @@monet23232 They say it is for themselves maybe because they feel it will make them happier. They feel it will improve their self image and seeing their new face will make them feel beautiful. Confidence is kind of like taking an 'objective' flaw and trying to call it pretty, essentially deluding yourself. Not saying this is the case but if I had to guess, this is probably how some people see it. It's not going to end for a while unless you're immune to ageing or something. You could try to get them to see it from your view and they might understand, or you could just tell them not to and they may stop even if they find it odd. But until they get too elderly to care so much about looking young and beautiful I doubt they'll stop anytime soon

As an Indian I genuinely feel that Chinese people look fine. There is no need to go for such extreme measures to pursue some elusive concept of external beauty propagated by the media.
@@Cxs1a3 I am not an 1dian and I have never met an 1dian. I am an Indian and I do know other fellow Indians too who do feel the same as I said. Indians and Chinese might be competitors on the economic and geo-political spheres, this doesn't mean that they are enemies on a personal, human level. In India too people have a wide array of facial features, complexions, languages, looks etc, and it's perfectly fine with all of us. We aren't a bunch of monotonous brownies as the western media would like to think. The food patterns and languages change every few kilometres here. Hence, I mentioned that despite the perceived cultural and racial differences from China, We do think they are generally good looking people and don't need to confirm to any externally imposed standard of beauty because it's impossible and pointless. It's a psychological prank the market forces are playing on people. If people from other ethnicities like us can find you attractive, why does one feel that they won't look attractive to their own people?
I bet that even if you put the most beautiful person in front of that So-Young app, it would still tell them they're ugly and recommend them a million different procedures. Yep all the big buts will be out of fashion soon and all those woman who went and got them pumped up to the max will be getting huge surgeries to revert them back to normal. It's a never ending cycle
Its crazy how obsessed people are with perfection. There were so many procedures mentioned about "flaws" that i didnt even know were considered flaws. Its insane and even that beauty influencer who got 300 surgeries still is not fully satisfied with how she looks and photoshopped her lips to make it even?!?! You can take an infinite number of surgeries and still not feel satisfied, it all stems from insecurity, all these people need are confidence. Other people should stop trying to point out every flaw that others have if it does not harm them.

Ironic that none of the plastic surgeons themselves have not done surgery on themselves. Does say something about what they really think about their procedures doesn't it? The calf muscle surgery by severing nerves is just horrendous! There are no ethical boundaries in China which is so sad. They should introduce medical lawsuits so it will deter this kind of unethical practice.
doctors understand there's no need to have plastic surgery for themselves because there's no medical reason for that and they do know what unnecessary tissue damage is being done and how long recovery takes, and how much fibrous tissue forms, and that full anesthesia is never good for you, not even once, etc., etc. instead, these doctors prey on some weak minded (easily influenced) and some narcissistic individuals. i get so many ads on insta for various plastic surgeries, and i have 0 interest in those - so they're wasting their ad revenue on me muhaha 😈
First rule of drug dealers is to not use drugs… I’m criminal organisations, that control the business of drugs, if you’re a drug addict, you can’t enjoy the organisation. Powerful people have powerful minds.
This is so sad. As an influencer myself, I've thought about "what will I do when my age really starts to show!?" My looks are part of how I make money, after all. But then I remember that aging is natural. To avoid it artificially is to promote more to do so.. which creates a vicious cycle of nobody ever feeling comfortable in their skin. I just wish there was a way we could all be happy with how we were born and strive to see the beauty in each other rather than the perceived flaws (that are never flaws- only things that "aren't currently in style"). Hoping this trend slows globally in the coming years.
You are already expired and it show lol. All jobs that rely on fame, beauty or people's sentiment to make money is of no value and worthless bullshit job. It's build on a house of card
There wasn't a minute passed that I wasn't screaming inside me while watching this documentary. The fear of plastic surgery was so overwhelming. I am grateful to not live in a society where appearance is the most important criteria in dictating the success of women.
Right! South Korea is notorious for this. Like you have to put your picture on your resume, if you are not pretty enough, it don't even matter about your skills. That's ridiculous, horrible, they force you to have plastic surgery to get a job. That's insane.
Li Ciuyun's story made me really feel for her. But I think she should just look for a man who loves her how she is. There is no reason to go broke over plastic surgery. Her brother is an amazing man, props to him for sticking up for her.
I'm from Brazil, where plastic surgery culture is pretty strong too and reinforced by society as well, and is very funny to see how in China the beauty standart claims for protrusive ears, while we have here a plastic surgery here to "correct" the ears by attaching them in the head the closest as possible, I was bullied all the time in school because of my ears. Lol I can't stop thinking how silly and harmful this beauty standart concept can be.
The calf surgery was shocking and what is even more shocking to me is that this girl thought there was something wrong with having muscles. Muscles are beautiful. They show strength and health. Everyone is beautiful in their own way. Focus on your best feature and the good qualities that make you a good person and save your money and health. Confidence is the best beauty enhancer.
That is according to western culture that muscles are beautiful and slim thick is trendy. Not so much in east Asia where beings slim and skinny is the trend like K-pop stars. It’s toxic but it’s also so easy to influence young people especially since they are at the age where they are trying to find their own identity. The sad thing is they would also rather listen to their peers and social media rather than their parents who are often heartbroken
Part of confidence is being able to wear clothes that fit your body type... 🙄She wanted to wear feminine things, like calf boots and dresses, but couldn't due to her legs being too thick... as she puts it "thick like a mans' legs." She lost weight to be feminine, instead she gained muscles rather than losing fat, making her feel like she has a mans' body and not that of a womans'. 🥺She even stated she has to wear mens' pants, because her calves are too thick to wear womens' clothes. We women wouldn't feel like sh!t if society started to make clothes that actually fit all sizes rather than this sick mentality we are all the same or should be forced into being all the same. It isn't as simple as just accepting yourself and just deal with wearing mens' clothes forever... it is also about the inaccessibility of things some people take for granted. Fashion designers need to cater to thick calves too and stop pushing that BS narrative that only skinny ladies ought to feel feminine and good about themselves too.

We Burmese never discriminate people against thier look. We don’t have strict beauty standards, if you are white, we praise you and if you have a darker skin, we praise you, in our language we have thousands of words to praise different beauty. You should make research before commenting something like this. As a Burmese girl, even when I date, I never look for look, I look for loving and caring personalities cause our society praise personality more than look.
The sad thing is that beauty influencer Yingying looks the way she does only with the video filters on top of the numerous surgical procedures she's done. Her skin looks terrible from all those injections... you can see how uneven and bumpy it is from the botox/fillers. It's never ending... and for what? Just to start aging and have the plastic surgery procedures make you look more unnatural. I think it's sensible to take care of one's looks and look presentable but not to this level of obsession. There's always going to be someone more beautiful and younger and no amount of surgery will give you that perfect look. I'm sorry to say but celebs/models/etc. who look beautiful were born with the right features/facial ratio and then they do surgery to enhance or tweak them. If you're not born with the right facial/body shape or features, surgery might improve certain features but rarely will it change your overall attractiveness to a drastic level. Just like talents and natural strengths, some people are just not meant to be beautiful in the conventional sense. I think working out, dieting, developing your own style, and investing in your self development and career makes you so much more attractive. Physical beauty is fleeting and if all you obsess about are your looks, all you're left with is an undeveloped and insecure personality with an empty shell.
Of course. I totally agree. It is sensible to try to look decent and maintain a sense of cleanliness but it is absolutely scary how people pay so much to alter their appearance and then alter it some more through photoshop and beauty filters. And then it's also ridiculous how everyone compares their appearance to each other like if you look nicer your life is instantly a success and you're a saint. It's ridiculous how people are literally re-shaping the body they are born with and getting millions of supporters and likes everywhere. I guess you're right, that no matter how much you pay and how many surgeries you get you'll still won't be satisfied, and you realize that time and money you spent could be actually used for a lot of things. Sure being pretty may get you adoring crowds and fame, but one day you're going to realize in the long run building your image and your whole life around surgeries will just leave you isolated from everyone else. It's much more worthwhile to accept your body and yourself instead of being stuck in this neverending negative feedback cycle. It is sad that many Chinese youth and youth in general are being swayed by this. In the end they're just hurting themselves and their family and spending money in the wrong places. Honestly this is just another episode of "I'm so glad I don't use social media that obsessively"

I finally booked appointment with a plastic surgeon. But that surgeon scolded me and said that she does surgery on normal ears everyday to make it more potruding. So she said me wanting to make my ears smaller is ridiculious idea and i should keep my "trendy" natural ears. Actually i am very glad for that surgeon. That day i understood beauty standards are ridiculious. Things that are considered ugly might become attractive on next day.
@@nah_. No, i'm not sure about Chinese ear trend. It's also weird and foreign to us. I heard protruding ears and crooked teeths were beauty standard in Japan, didn't knew it crossed the ocean and infiltrated other countries. But it was shocking to me. To us it was never considered as something positive on someone. Maybe i should thank Japan for changing trends?
Although I've already seen this docu before: sincere thanks to the team of CNA for subtitling the OST (instead of a dub), so I can improve my Chinese comprehension. Of course, also an import topic to cover.
In Lebanon , we started this in the 90s , right after the civil war where reconstructive surgery became Plastic surgery ... it was so bad that people used to tell me ' you do not look lebanese ' because I ve had no plastic surgery ... thank god , some of the new génération chose natural beauty . So after 30 years , people go back to Natural ... and we see the effects of fake beauty over âge ... it needs constant care otherwise it looks horrible
People from lebanon already look great and those procedures made them worst. I see korean and chinese women really change from average or ugly to pretty and then bully natural people
Exactly. Skin ages, and all you can do is keep stretching it tighter and tighter until - as Robert Redford said - you look like an escapee from the tomb ..... surely the opposite of the intended effect!
It seems the people who are so obsessed with their looks and having "appearance anxiety" have severe, underlying mental health issues that they should seek help with first before going under the knife.
clearly the biological algorithm has been hijacked by too much tech and peer pressure, they(Chin) are leading the charge in tech so we can prepare ourselves better. Can't wait for this to hit EU/US
I can tell that China can definitely get addicted to plastic surgery. Especially that beauty is deeply rooted in the culture. I feel that my obsession with beauty was influenced by my grandmother(she had Chinese blood). She always emphasized that beauty is a woman's weapon. And because of that, growing up I had body dysmorphia and unrealistic perception of beauty. But, now that I'm getting older. I've come to terms with my insecurities and understood how feelings can be addicting. Especially when you grew up in a judgmental society.
If you notice, the business person ( these are business people not health care professionals or doctors ) who promote the beauty of plastic surgery non of them have undergone any plastic surgery procedure that’s just like the cook who tells you how great his food is but he won’t eat any of it.
Or the wealthy old taliban leaders telling young people to blow themselves up in a crowded market, or go fight anyone challenging their rule, because anyone who dies in "The holy war" will go to heaven and live in God's embrace forever. When in fact they all waited until the fighting was done to leave Pakistan and go to Afghanistan.
Lawyers, Doctors, Architects, Engineers, Accountants etc. have to take oaths that they will do no harm. Programmers should definitely be added to that list, they can do far more damage than any physician ever could.
@@君z-r6f tofu dreg projects, also known as tofu buildings and tofu projects is one example of the harm that architects can do. Engineers can design a vacuum cleaner that can overheat and cause a recall, costing the company a huge amount of money, even if none of their customers gets injured from the overheated vacuum. Accountants can divert funds that would have otherwise gone to poor people or hospitals that desperately need the money.
I stared at the before and after picture of that cranial injection thing for a good amount of minutes, but I can't see what the difference is. In fact I can't see it for many of these procedures. This is so dumb. These people look great the way they are. People used to get bullied for having ears that stick out, but now that it's a fad, people want to have it. In a few years, smaller ears may become the new fad, and then those same people want their ears to be smaller again. This is toxic af.
I stopped at calf reduction! I get the face tummy tuck all that! But your body’s muscles all work together! Her body is built like that for a reason! When you start removing muscle that’s throwing other things off and making you not walk natural. Be willing to bet she has some crazy issues with her knees, feet, hips even back from walking unnaturally.
@@리주민 Haha, that's funny. It would be better if it was just calf meat from the farm rather than severing people's nerves. That part of the calf surgery in the video made me squirm.
@@tvu24 actually I’d prefer to let the baby calf live and the mentally challenged ppl who get their muscles cut in purpose can live with that decision.
I think people should focus more on inner beauty. I’m sick and tired of having to deal with people who have anti social disorder everyday. What’s the point of being good looking when your personality and manner is so ugly? If anyone care about their beauty, it should start from within, like eating healthy, drink enough water, exercise, and build strong character. After you done all that and still look horrendous somehow, then go get surgery if you must
The root cause of the prevalence of appearance dysphoria is society at large. People, in general, reward and positively acknowledge people who look aesthetically pleasing consciously and subconsciously. Society at large many criticize people who undergo plastic surgery, yet exhibit behavior feeding the reason for many people to feel insecure about their looks. It's crazy.
As an Australian the idea of basically crippling yourself to have skinny legs is completely insane to me. But then I have seen the intensity of East Asian beauty standards close up via my husband. I feel in my culture like not being visibly "deformed" is good enough, I'm pretty average but I guess vaguely pleasant looking and that has always been enough in my cultural context. Where people have an actual "deformity" I guess we still have stigmas, but we are getting better about that over time because we have a desire to do so and there are activists in the disability field always trying to push more acceptance and respect of peoples basic humanity. It's interesting contrasting with the harsh standards of my husband, who can barely cope with looking at "ugly" people, I feel sad when he criticises himself though. He's very handsome but he only sees his imperfections :(
Interesting contrast between your husband’s Korean? culture and your Australian culture. Having looks that are not pleasing to one culture is just that… physical preference you can say, but not being able to even look at “ugly” people is another, completely different issue. That comes from the inside. Personality always trumps looks. No offence, I don’t know your husband, but it sounds like he needs to adjust his thinking. That is no longer personal preference but more like being arrogant. I’ve been bullied before by a partner because of my looks. It’s terrible. I just hope you’re not.
It’s sad hearing about the girl with failed breast augmentation. Honestly there are not much regulations about such medical enhancing plastic surgeries.. and obviously these plastic surgeons are more on making money instead of educating their patients not ethnical with their behaviors.. it’s so sad.
for those who are not physically attractive, life is easier if you just work hard and pick a good career, like software engineering. Decent income, only interacts with computer, enjoy nice trips to other countries a couple of times a year, ignore all the rat-race vanity, save up, invest, retire early. It's a peaceful life.
Agree. Pretty people may have advantages in life and everybody treats them better, but in my opinion, the prettier, the more miserable your life and yourself become; you don't know if people like you for you or for your looks, and also people try to exploit your beauty. I talk from experience. My brother and I (we are from China) are "good looking", although my brother a lot more, so my family and everybody around us pushed us into modeling since children and wanted us to get a career in acting or MC. Both my brother and I ended up with depression and anxiety and when in college, we decided to leave to the US and quit all the crap our family pushed us into. We barely talk to our parents now, but are much happier and have good friends around us that love us for ourselves.
Lol sounds like you're describing your life. I personally can't stand being in front of a screen for too long, it makes me feel nauseous. But all the power to you computer engineers
East Asians need to love themselves more. There's nothing wrong with you. You're fine the way you are. Eat healthy, exercise, be clean and presentable - just do your best in these areas. Plastic surgery needs maintenance and it never looks right without makeup. You'll end up paying for more and more surgery. It's short-term thinking.
This type of "beauty" is only skin deep. No matter how much they pay and sacrifice, everyone will get old and end up looking the same. It is not worth it. Spend the time and money on your loved ones and doing things that matter, like improving your physical and mental health, and finding confidence through that.
I got a call one time from a plastic surgery place. The girl on the phone said we have different kinds of programs to make you prettier. I told her I feel beautiful myself. I don't think I need any corrections about my looks. Then she said what about bigger eyes or better looking nose...The problem is a lot of things are kinda sick. How can she be so direct to tell one person she never met before that they need some surgeries to make them more beautiful. Why can't we learn to appreciate ourselves by the way we are.
Its funny how, as time passes, many of the people who got procedures look a lot older than their natural counterparts... Plastic sugery's people do not age very well
As a nurse, I cannot believe that a doctor would “cut” a nerve in the leg - nerves are one part of the body we cannot replace and it cannot heal - so any effect of this is permanent. This surgery would never be allowed in the US.
In the heavily filtered videos she makes, you can’t see all the damage that all those surgeries have done. But in regular interview footage, you can see the result of the excessive procedures. Her face looks very “lumpy” and it looks like she has a good amount of scarring and swelling. It’s sad that people are viewing these so-called influencers in such a distorted way.
They just keep finding ways to make you feel insecure about your look, watching this documentary got me realised that it is nothing wrong with your look , but people will convince you there is
I am so amazed at how they all readily know their waist size and calf size??? Like what? I literally have to gauge what size I might fit in the waist when I shop online.
All the people here are absolutely beautiful just the way they are, it’s sick how coworkers, family and “friends” encourage them to do this, all feeding into the sick plastic surgery culture.. it’s going too far, 300 surgeries and still not happy with their looks, they’ll never be happy and even put their own life at risk for this unattainable beauty standard which NOBODY will ever meet, like it doesn’t make sense, an app to point out “imperfections”? It’s insane.
why dont people read more books, do walks in nature, play with their kids, dogs, friends, or just dance by themselves, why dont we walk more by the sea, whatever, instead of obsessing with the aspect of our bodies, specially if we are healthy, just enjoy the fact that we can move and breathe, ffs... this plastic surgery reality is so disturbing...
All of this pains my entire heart and being... This reminds me of the practice of foot binding that was destructive to those who participated in it, and no one considered the after effects while it was happening... It was acceptable because it was a thing that was being done, and that seemed to be enough of a motivating factor. The irreparable harm that will be caused by this won't be realized until it's too late.
I agree with that doctor in the video that said "healthy beauty" is better than "sick beauty". We have feet for a reason and calf muscles and surrounding nerves are there for a reason. It's there so we can live and function at its optimal when the human body is healthy. Some of these beauty standards veer into serious dangerous territories, and I hope surgeries like that calf reduction for costmetic purposes gets banned in China.
I had lived in Taiwan and Europe for almost my entire life, and we have numerous pretty women in the countries. Since I moved to Singapore, many Chinese women asked me - what plastic surgery have you done? I was shocked because I was born like this, and appearance was never something I cared much about as long as I was healthy mentally and physically. Now, I know why...at some level, their culture is pathetic. Why not spend more time on making a better world?
I have many flaws and I don't fit the unrealistic beauty standards. I can't afford the expensive plastic surgery and definitely would not dare go under the knife. No matter how safe the procedure may be, the side effects will always be apparent and will show later in life. What's more important is that I am healthy and I am able to do my daily activities without any problem.
Absolutely true... recently saw katy perry and selena gomez's eye twitch because of botox...they have no control over their own facial muscles anymore.
After watching this video, what struck me was that the solution to these peoples' dilemmas were under their nose the whole time: Jessica's legs are naturally thick because she loves to go to the gym - a source of joy she did not appreciate until her failed surgery The teacher landed her interview at a famous bridal studio despite not looking like those Soyoung influencers, implying there is more to success than just looks B■■b surgery woman's husband gives money to his sister not because he doesn't love his wife. It is because, similar to her own big brother, the husband has a societal role to play as a loving brother to his own siblings It's a shame how social media blinds us to our realities in a bid to make us yearn for things we do not need
What’s next marketing cosmetic surgery on babies. You can’t pass cosmetic procedures that have been done to your children. Your children will always be a reminder to what you really look like. Will they hate their babies? Will they mistreat them, give them away or worse? I still believe in cosmetic procedures but this is out of control. These apps should not be easily accessible. Once upon a time you had to pay a good amount of money for this type of technology it was controlled by financial availability. If you wanted a procedure bad enough you would save for it most people forget and go on with life but now it’s an obsession.
Omg. Severing nerves in calf muscles?? No way in hell!! Nerves are tricky, that's a major surgery. Thx for bringing this sad story to us. No one needs plastic surgery, just work on your 💙and love yourself & others💕💖💕
The answer is Yes. when a culture is overloaded with people of similar talents, getting one up over the other in the beauty department opens significantly more doors.
I don't have any issue with that, it's just that trends are temporary and these procedures can be permanent. For example, hyaluronic acid can last way more than we're told, it's just that it migrates, so you have the feeling that it's gone from the injection site
This is incredibly sad and scary. It feels the same here in SK, but being a foreigner i'm only partly triggered by the pressure but its definitely a thing and makes you feel like you're hideous... and Im sure its like this in US too but under the guise of freedom and free will to do what you want if you want. The hard truth is the majority of the world is told what they want and how to look. And brainwashed ever so subtly every day.
I agree with "the guise of freedom and free will to do what you want if you want" is a new way of insecurity form. It makes you never appreciate your physical features. Its just short term solution. Then totally ignored the root of the problem; their mindset.
@@busubalang2361 oh what? Freedom and free will also come with self responsibility. That also means you are responsible for your own self. If people pressure me about my beauty, and want me to have plastic surgery, I won’t do it because no one can force me to or I will sue them. If they refuse me job because of my appearance, I will sue them. That is how most thing work in the US. People can spit on the suing part as much as they want, but suing is the best way to get fair right out there.
I wasn’t expecting the “elf ears” surgery to actually really do anything for the face but I was actually quite shocked when I saw the before and after photos because it did seem to have the affect they claimed. I feel like it almost gives a more innocent and youthful look. I was surprised because I actually found it quite attractive. I went and held my ears out in the mirror to see what it would look like on me but I felt like I just looked stupid lol.
31:48 brooo that broke my heart💔💔 Ladies it's never because of your looks, the man is a garbage person and there's better ones out there!! Poor woman🥺💔💔
There's nothing inherently wrong with wanting to be beautiful or attractive. The problem is when your sole identity is based-off your appearance. There are a few things I'd like to change about my face, but rather than worry about them or spend thousands of dollars trying to correct them, I think I'd rather work on my personality and interests. Sounds hella cliché, but let's be real; no matter how shiny a rock is, it's still a rock.
So sad to see what China's economic miracle and technological advancements have engendered; this warped shallow misplaced idea of what physical beauty is. Social media is such a soul sucking platform.
I don't think anyone is 100% happy when we look in the mirror but If we had an accident that would disfigure us greatly our old face/body would be something we would have back in an instant. The features we have are our uniquiness but the beauty industry only exists by trends so the operation you have today to alter your appearance may be in years to follow what is "beautiful or desirable" I have not been immune to looking in the mirror pulling skin tighter lifting forehead for smooth skin I wouldn't however go into deep debt for it but I'm not 25 years old anymore my life has far more concerns then my appearance so I dodged the vanity bullet debt If I were younger with the loans, pay later and deals available for me I probably would have at least been for a consult in which they would've pointed out 5 or 6 other things wrong I could fixate on and so the industry thrives.
That woman with the breast augmentation is so irresponsible. No clue what is in the contract, but still signing. She has two children to care for, but only focusses on her looks. I wonder why her husband is not giving her any money. People in the comments pity the woman, but we don't know the reasons of the husband. The family would probably starve and lose housing if she would handle more than her own small income.
what people want is not what they think is beautiful, what people want is affirmation and appreciation from others. Even if you tell a person that you don't need this because it's unhealthy, the person will say: This is the way everyone in society is, and you won't get what you want if you don't. but you can see the panic from their eyes when they receive negative comments from internet. How steadfast they are in rejecting help, how vulnerable they are in the face of appearance anxiety.
The last story is so touching. That big brother is so good to his little sister, we need more people like that in this world. People needs to realize the beauty is within. Why pay all that $ and risk your life or health.
You can chase beauty all you want but you will ALWAYS lose as age inevitably catches up to you. I can't believe anyone would go through this for 20 or so years of "beauty". Beauty fades fast, what matters is what's inside.

If people one day woke up and became happy with themselves, imagine how many industries would be out of business.

That could happen in other parts of the world, but not in East Asia. East Asians are simply too shallow.

What does she say now? Will she redo the surgery?
@@бронза.вафля.конус she's in denial, sadly. We were prepping for an event and she asked me to help her trim her brows. I told her it's hard to make them look good with those scars. I had to paint her brows over them. She didn't say a thing.
@@zeegorman1865 honestly surgery seems worth it as an idea. But the reality is, I've never seen a single person who got cosmetic surgery and they

The Dr who has been a surgeon for 30 plus years has had work done. It looks good.

At this point, its just a game for me to watch out for a trend that I i possess and remove that insecurity. Trends come back and go all the time
Elf ear enhancement is a big shock for me. Decades ago people hated their ears being too obvious and even do surgery to “pull” back and hide their ears.
I thought the same thing 😅
People usually hide their ears, yeah.
It should be called big ears or dumbo ear surgery, not elf ears. Elf ears have pointy ends and are long.
People used to say black people are ugly because they have big lips, now every white girl wants to have big lips like a black woman. Big lips surgery is becoming common in China too.
yep, own your 'shortcomings' and they become part of you that people aspire to
My father - ex surgeon - told me :
"Make a little cut on a tomato and it'll rot faster than the others." 😵
Then he said: "Have surgery only if it's extremely necessary." 🤔

Now thin eyebrows are coming back. I don’t follow trends, I always do things that look best on me.(lol I already had naturally thin eyebrows )

I appreciate that YingYing allowed CNA to show non filtered video clips of her actual face and skin.

That is according to western culture that muscles are beautiful and slim thick is trendy. Not so much in east Asia where beings slim and skinny is the trend like K-pop stars.
Yeah. It’s ridiculous how she feels insecure about every part of her face, even the shape of her head, BUT her skin
Exactly!
Can't wait for this to hit EU/US
😅
THe whole Chind had it..they think with plastic surgery they will attract millionairs and become rich without having to work
I agree
Society makes them that way. See the way Li Ya’s employer openly criticized her look? Your face too big, your nose too big, blah blah
But beauty is really a woman's weapon.
@@johnnymcblaze and they were not interested for God's embrace so they offered it to the brain washed.
Plastic surgery is better compared to drugs so it'd be a case of "don't get high on your own supply"

I didn't notice a difference either.
It's because of her hair. I hope she has healthy and beautiful hair all of her life cause if her hair falls off she's gonna look like an egg 🥚 lmao
Thought Calf reduction was a farm selling more veal.🐄😋
@35:51 she is blessed with such a sweet older brother ❤
It’s sad hearing about the girl with failed breast augmentation. Honestly there are not much regulations about such medical enhancing plastic surgeries.. and obviously these plastic surgeons are more on making money instead of educating their patients not ethnical with their behaviors.. it’s so sad.
Also it's really sad that she did it because of her low self-esteem, because her husband didn't care about her.
@@lalakuma9 i agree absolutely.
She just needed a new husband that loves her for who she is...
Her story made me bawl my eyes out
for those who are not physically attractive, life is easier if you just work hard and pick a good career, like software engineering.
Sadly these careers in IT are continuously being outsourced to cheaper and cheaper countries. They are even passing India to cheaper places now.

What a sad culture. Instead of fighting injustices in their society, they're fighting with their look.
Is it me only that the Beauty Vlogger still doesn't look attractive to me after so many procedures
She looks like a 30+ year old ordinary south east asian (pinoy), to me 🤷🏻♀️
@@nanrp2681 what’s a pinoy lol

As European living in China, what’s funny is even after surgery they still using beauty PS app for their selfie 🤳…lol
Haha.. I feel you .
I've never in my life paid this much attention to someone's ears.
I have never noticed people's ears, ever.
Yes, be grateful to God
Absolutely true... recently saw katy perry and selena gomez's eye twitch because of botox...they have no control over their own facial muscles anymore.
After watching this video, what struck me was that the solution to these peoples' dilemmas were under their nose the whole time:
Jessica's legs are naturally thick because she loves to go to the gym - a source of joy she did not appreciate until her failed surgery
The teacher landed her interview at a famous bridal studio despite not looking like those Soyoung influencers, implying there is more to success than just looks
B■■b surgery woman's husband gives money to his sister not because he doesn't love his wife. It is because, similar to her own big brother, the husband has a societal role to play as a loving brother to his own siblings
It's a shame how social media blinds us to our realities in a bid to make us yearn for things we do not need
The desperation to be acceptable in a country you grew up and learned to love is depressing in every possible way. 😢
My ears are flat to my head and I'm so glad it is 😁
The answer is Yes. when a culture is overloaded with people of similar talents, getting one up over the other in the beauty department opens significantly more doors.
It’s sad but true.
Nah the land of mcdonalds and triple chins doesnt have to worry.
They can get jobs at sea world
I agree with "the guise of freedom and free will to do what you want if you want" is a new way of insecurity form.
It’s not like this in the usa
Agree, Sis should've divorced the man and get her someone who can love her for her.
Is the aim here that everyone on this planet looks exactly the same? What a sad world we're living in.
So sad to see what China's economic miracle and technological advancements have engendered; this warped shallow misplaced idea of what physical beauty is. Social media is such a soul sucking platform.
In the past, people would worry about food and clothing. Now that you become rich, you will pursue what they call beauty.
My heart breaks for these ladies. Do they even understand what kind of deception they are embracing? self worth starts from within.
The last story is so touching. That big brother is so good to his little sister, we need more people like that in this world. People needs to realize the beauty is within. Why pay all that $ and risk your life or health.
But she was complaining that her husband gave all his money to his sister, now she has her brother help her pay for her boob job.
You can chase beauty all you want but you will ALWAYS lose as age inevitably catches up to you. I can't believe anyone would go through this for 20 or so years of "beauty". Beauty fades fast, what matters is what's inside.
