There were problems between Jeanette and Nelson during the making of this film according to the research of Sharon Rich, but I feel this song helped to make peace...they seem both so sincere, and Nelson's caressing Jeanette's hand during the song is very touching. Thank you for sharing it.

Yes I love how he always seems to reach for her and touch her hands but this song seems to touch them both so differently than most other songs it seems...like they truly are hurting....so sad...I wish they could have had their love lives the way they wanted and truly deserved!! Such a beautiful but tragic love story.....

@@katherineleonowski7289 You have said it so well.
The movie which they did that portrays their tragic love story the best is Maytime. Perhaps they are together now as they were in the end of that wonderful but sad movie.

    Lyrics:
Love may fill your heart with a strange delight
Love may build a world that is new
Love may leave your heart like a winter night
No one knows just what love will do
    Who are we to say
    Just what love will do?
Love may live a day, or all life through
    Who are we to say
    How a rose will grow
It may fade away or bloom and blow
You and I may plan and scheme
    And every thing's arranged
Then there comes a vagrant dream
And all the world is changed!
    Who are we to say
    When to say goodbye
Or to wonder why we two must part
So we live today loving while we may dear
    Knowing love would say
    Obey your heart
    Who are we to say
    When to say goodbye
Or to wonder why we two must part
So we live today loving while we may dear
    Knowing love would say
    Obey your heart

Thank you so much for posting these lyrics, Shirl. I always loved this movie since it shows Jeanette & Nelson without the frills and showy costumes from other films. The love between them is so obvious in this scene. They truly had a love that transcended time and space.

She really did break down. This song was originally to be a duet between them. Nelson had to sing as a solo. Shame on Louis B. Mayer for keeping them from marrying each other.

'She really broke down' come on It's called acting. She loved her husband Gene not Nelson.

Just the way they look at each other, in all their movies, is enough to know how much their love was real. When Jeanette married Gene Raymond, it broke Nelson Eddy's heart and he rushed into a
loveless marriage. Jeanette married someone who resembled Nelson but was gay. Gene Raymond had an affair with another man while on their honeymoon.! How sad for Mac/Eddy!

The only original score for any of their films was the one for The Girl Of The Golden West. Sigmund Romberg and Gus Kahn
    did the score.

FriendlyFire: Who are we to say love might live a day or whole life through ...Who are we to say when to.say good bye, or to wonder why we too must part for we live today loving while we may dear, knowing love will fade, obey your heart ... Eddy w/good strong voice shows clearly his love. No sentimental dribble. A lot that passes for "love" now is just an excuse to be promiscuous w/no comment.
