  • Removing a bulging / swelling / puffy battery from a MacBook pro laptop
    This happens with all kinds of laptops when the battery fails and is dangerous because lithium batteries can catch on fire and are very hard to extinguish.

    You are a lifesaver! Too bad I found your video a little too late the bulging in my laptop is so bad the touchpad was completely lifted off, the chassis is made of plastic so the bulging actually broke it and has a few cracks. The touchpad was getting annoying and I decided to take it off since I use a wired mouse :( still wish I found your video like 2 months ago. Thanks again

    My Gateway Laptop has a bulging battery and the fan is super super loud. I have been continuously charging it 24/7 while using which could be the culprit I think. Definitely gonna have to get rid of it cuz the fan is extremely loud and the trackpad is about to break

    • @CircuitAnalysis
      @CircuitAnalysis  Год назад

      Yeah lithium ion prefers to be about 50% charged for best longevity, but it's just not realistic unless you have an app that can keep it there. My Lenovo came with an app that lets you keep it at 60% if you're just leaving it plugged in. In general though although it will degrade faster the battery should not swell up, that is definitely a defect in my opinion.

  • @inzanity490
    @inzanity490 10 месяцев назад +1

    What should I do to prevent the swelling in the first place? My laptop has the functionality to stop charging at 60%, so as long as I keep it plugged in, the percentage is always at 60%, drops a bit when I turn it off and unplug it, then goes back up when plugged again. Can this lessen the chance of swelling or is it also doing some harm?

    • @CircuitAnalysis
      @CircuitAnalysis  10 месяцев назад +1

      I think the main factors are temperature, state of charge (full charge being worse) and manufacturer defect. You can't do anything to prevent a defect, but you can try to keep it cool and the 60% state of charge function is good if it's available and you're keeping it plugged in all the time. I also noticed with another laptop that had the battery swell I had it in a stand so it was vertical and the back was down so the heat from the processor and other circuits was at the bottom and rising up into the battery which was under the trackpad. I think if may have been better if I had oriented it with the front side with the battery facing down so the battery stayed cooler. Good luck!

    • @CircuitAnalysis

      I would not risk it, I would just use the laptop with the AC power adapter. Check if you have any warranties or anything and ask the manufacturer and/or store you got it from if they can replace it for free? It's definitely a defective battery.

    im just worried about mine after heard about how a laptop battery could be swollen, my keyboard and touchpad seems fine and also the back doesnt seem to be extruded, and laptop battery life is also normal, what are other signs of swollen laptop battery?

    • @CircuitAnalysis
      @CircuitAnalysis  Год назад

      That's it, if you don't see any bulging then you should be fine. The first sign for me was a growing gap when you close the lid, like it didn't close all the way because it was hitting the bulge in the middle of the keyboard. Most of them are fine though so if you don't have a problem then don't worry about it.

    some laptops get to go through some years of use and doesnt bulge, what exactly is causing the bulge? is it the heat from the device itself?

    • @CircuitAnalysis
      @CircuitAnalysis  2 года назад +1

      I'm not a battery expert, but the same thing happened to my HP laptop when I had it folded up in a stand behind my monitor during the warmer part of the year. I realized that I had it oriented with the back of the computer facing down and in my case the battery was under the mousepad, making it at the top. Therefore I figured all the heat from the processor and everything was rising up into the battery. Since then I've made an effort to put my new one in the stand the other way so the back is up and the battery is at the bottom and I've had no issues, but then it could also just have been a manufacturing defect.

  • @phillipchavezjr.240

    I know it's important to always do a back up when you repair things, but if you simply remove a bloated battery will it erase your Itunes Music Library? I was planning to move my my music on a micro sd card but since my cursor pad is warped because of the battery it's difficult to high light and drag things.
    I'm buying a new macbook pro next month, so I simply want this hazardous battery removed and will just use this old mac plugged in. So if I'm simply removing the battery only will it erase the Itunes Music ?
    Btw, your lucky and gifted to remove the battery by yourself instead of taking it to an apple store which I dread since I don't know if they ask for your password or can simply remove the battery only with no
    replacement.

    • @CircuitAnalysis
      @CircuitAnalysis  Год назад

      Your hard drive which stores your music and all other files does not require any power to keep the files stored, so no, removing the battery will not erase your music. It will just make your laptop more like a desktop in that it will only run while you have it plugged in. A bloated bat is a defect though so I would go ahead and ask apple if if is covered under any warranty or anything.

    Oh I was not able to remove the screws near the battery of my Macbook pro mid 2012 any help?

    • @CircuitAnalysis
      @CircuitAnalysis  Год назад

      Yeah the screws as I showed in the video were some sort of 3 pointed custom head (1:40) so if you want to be super legit you'd need to buy a special screw driver for that. I assume someone probably sells them on amazon or aliexpress, but I didn't need it since my battery broke itself off one screw for me and I was able to get the other out with a Philips driver. One thing though is make sure you don't have any warrenties or that Apple won't fix it for you before you start trying to do anything yourself, since it is a defect that should not happen in the first place.

      Yeah sounds like it. I would check and see if you can return it or if you have a warranty on it and if so then back up all your junk and return it or send it back to HP. If not, then I would unscrew the back and remove the battery. Either way, keep an eye on it because those batteries are dangerous and can catch on fire, so you want to keep it in a metal bucked or a bucket with sand or somewhere where it won't burn your house down if it does ignite. I have had 2 laptop batteries do that last year and neither actually caught on fire, but I removed both batteries and put them in a metal can in my garage. What I'm trying to say is don't freak out because it's probably not going to catch on fire, but don't ignore it because it's certainly a possibility. If you do end up taking the battery out you can still use the laptop when it's plugged in, and you can always buy a replacement battery.
