    This does not “fix” anything. The reason a battery swells is because the chemicals inside the battery are breaking down. Nobody should do this under ANY circumstances. If your battery is swollen, GET A NEW BATTERY. If you do this, you’re just asking to get your hand blown off.

    Thought that occurred to me:
    A lancing device such as the one used by diabetics to give themselves very small pinpricks on their fingers for blood sugar testing might be ideal for this kind of operation. The lancing device is calibrated to only penetrate the surface by less than a millimetre (you can typically set the precise depth), and cannot go any deeper than that.

    This "fix" worked on a fully charged but badly swollen kg40 cell phone battery. The phone and battery worked fine but the swelling had misaligned the protective case, so it was hard to operate the side controls and to charge the phone. Working outdoors, with the back end of the back phone cover raised and the battery still in place, I put a strip of scotch tape over the center of the swollen battery. Using a toothpick to pierce the battery did not work. The battery membrane was just too tough and the toothpick wasn't sharp or tough enough to do the job! Next, working at a small angle to the battery, I used a sharp needle to make a very shallow tiny pinhole through the tape and membrane. I quickly pressed out the swelling and put several layers of tape over the hole. Very little air, if any got into the battery.
    It's far too soon to tell how long this "fix" will last, but it is working fine. Yes getting a new replacement battery is inexpensive (about $11 on Ebay), but until the "fixed" battery fails, I won't worry about it. If it fails and I decide to keep my phone, I will replace the battery. Putting in a new battery will actually be much more work then this simple "fix".

    This is a terrible and dumb video. Relieving the gas buildup/pressure is not a repair or a fix. Lithium ion batteries do this as a result of misuse and malfunction. Relieving the pressure does not remediate the malfunction. This battery is still a significant fire hazard. If your battery swells like this, you should consider it finished and dangerous!

    • @ecospider5
      @ecospider5 2 года назад

      It is a safety statement so no scientific proof is not needed. If there is any possibility of a chemical being in there that can spontaneously catch fire with contact with the air then this is a good statement to make.
      We know this can happen because plenty of people have opened a battery completely and had flakes of chemicals burst into flames on their bench minutes after the battery was opened.

    • @ecospider5
      @ecospider5 2 года назад

      Your right it would be interesting to know. Part of it we will never know though because in every lithium battery there are some secret sauce chemicals that they never tell anyone about. If one of these can spontaneously combust in contact with air it will stay a mystery.
      But knowing which of the known chemicals react this way would nice to know.

    WARNING..: NEVER take appart a mobile phone with a charged battery.. Always DRAIN the battery so its empty before taking the phone appart.
    Reason is batterys can easy ignite or explode when you bend them or when you try to puncture them.
    Dont do what you see in the video buy a NEW original battery or one that is certified... Be very aware that there are many bad copy batterys in example Asia.
    Some are okay some are dangerous to use. A battery that catch fire while in your pocket can and will burn you very badly in just 2-3 seconds.
    And you might even risk the battery explode while you use your phone or burn down your house at night while charging.
    DO NOT buy a cheap battery.

      Batterys DO NOT ignite easily, they are extremely safe and only ignite in very extreme circumstances (such as the circumstance in this video, all it takes is the wrong tilt with that's that pin and he'll be starting some fireworks), if ignited so easily, they wouldn't be in so many phones, laptops, cars, etc.
      The problem the is when they do ignite though, they can be extremely nasty, especially lithium ion chemistry.
      In my 15 years of repairing phones and laptops, I've never once had a battery go up in flames, and I've shorted a lot of batteries in my early days.
      I do agree though, that if you'll be doing something potentially dangerous with, or near a li-ion battery, it's wise to discharge it as much as possible.

    • @Phantogram2
      @Phantogram2 2 года назад +1

      The state of the charge does not change the flammability of lithium. Shorting a mobile battery while it is drained is more dangerous than shorting it while it still holds some charge, because 1 - it will not heat up so fast to actually catch fire, you'd have to short it for quite some time, and 2 - Mobile batteries don't have PCB on them and you're essentially going to destroy the battery by making it go under 2.4v. Charger might not even recognize the battery and your phone might no longer charge, but even if that doesn't happen, there are long term damaging effects.

    The ION are bricking upon their self the battery as exceeded its use the reason why its swollen is because the ION have bricked and the flow of new electricity being introduce has to find the room in the Battey causing it to expand This can happen due to a lot of factors. NEVER PUNCHURE ANY BATTERY its not a good move it will NOT FIX YOUR ISSUE IF YOU HAVE A SWOLLEN BATTERY REACH OUT TO A LOCAL TECHNICIAN TO HAVE IT SERVICED , Swollen batteries are NOT a Safety Concern THEY DO NOT BLOW UP UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS, How ever poking holes in any lithium ion product is a potential health hazard. lithium ion batteries are considered a consumable product MEANING WE DO EXPECT THEM TO FAIL (BE CONSUMED)

      Just a guess, but sounds like you have a leak in your battery. Though I would normally do the fix in the video, if you cannot find the leak and seal it, might be best if you replace your battery. I get the general idea this is not nearly as dangerous as people think, so I wont tell you not to use your phone in the state it is in, but not sure you should use it either.

    Here is a common sense to people who keep saying it works. He said in the video clearly that the gas is hazardous, and then he seals the puncture with a piece of tape. What do you think will happen when the same battery swol again? This is some strongly airtight material that he puncture through, you think a piece of tape is going to prevent gas that's under pressure from coming out?

      Also the gas that comes out gives ME an instant migraine that lasts a long time. YMMV. Do this outside on the concrete. Good ventilation, and if it catches fire, won't burn your house down. You CAN'T safely pick up a device that has lit because it turns into a blow-torch that will give instant 3rd degree burns. If you have to pick it up to move it somewhere safe, you're already doing it wrong. Discharge the battery to 25% or less before doing this. If it does short, the less power in the battery, the smaller and shorter the fire will be. Use "polyimide film" (aka Capton/Kapton) tape instead of scotch tape if you have it. That's what the manufacturers wrap these batteries in to improve their airtight-ness. (if you see a really thin yellow/range tape in your computer, that's capton) It's very heat resistant, very sticky, and stays stuck for a long time.
