We have a GL450, you just can't beat German engineering! It's quick, it's very responsive and it's pretty fun to drive! On the downside, it's never met a gas station it hasn't liked! But let's face it, if you're driving one of these, you're really not that concerned about the cost of fuel.
@@dimakratz63 same, gl63 with full brabus widestar I can get 23mpg if I’m nice and will do 175mph if I’m not nice Cant argue with those figures for a bus weighing nearly 3 ton Edit…. No idea why a Volvo is even here, that’s the only mention it deserves
The Volvo looks much better, has a much better interior and entertainment system + much better gas mileage AND its almost half the price... Its a no brainer...
It is a no brainer if you dont have teenage kids. Otherwise the third row is too small, in which case you go down the used GL route. The potential reliability of both (Mercedes has not been a shining angel for many years) however is a concern.
2010 me never thought I'd see the day when a Volvo's interior embarrasses the hell out of Mercedes. Other than the undersized, less-than-pleasant engine (yes, I've driven the T8) the XC90 is easily the most premium vehicle in it's class.
We crossed shopped the GLE, GLS, Audi Q7, and they were all really good cars. Then for shits and giggles, we drove across the street to the Volvo dealer. Long story short, we placed an order for an Inscription trim 2017 XC90, that day. And I'm a Merc AMG guy. I wanted the GLS to win the day but we're going with the Swede and using the money we saved on a down-payment for a vacation home.
Curtis Heidel so did we! We also included a Cayenne, Q7, and Range Rover Sport in our consideration....the XC90 beat them all out. We're so happy with our '16 Inscription!
Yeah I agree with Syed, amazing stories! How have your friends and such reacted to"a Volvo", positive?

There are two stunningly beautiful things in this video: autumn in Colorado and the interior of the XC90. Would love to use the latter to explore the former :)
Too bad you didn't get your hands on the T8 Executive would have been a closer match! But I do get that you can't always pick the cars you review exactly how you'd want them.
I'm the biggest Mercedes fan boy. And I'm also from Sweden. I never liked the old Volvo's, but this and the S90, are hands down one of the best cheaper luxury cars.
awesome TFL classic Mashup in rural Colorado.i really liked it when you guys did your reviews there. please do more of this and PLEASE can you bring back, "does Nathan fit in the trunk". every car that I look at I'm like oh 1 1/2 Nathan's could fit there.
a9005 Don't worry. I'm pretty sure Mercedes would pay for that to be fixed for ya. Look at how much Tesla breakes for an example, and they fix a lot of those for free.
J Gripen Tesla had an 8 year warranty. Mercedes, being pretty cheap, would only have around a 1.5 - 2 year warranty. That's long enough for it to break.
Exactly that you stole my words haha. Everybody screaming about reliability of Volvos 4 cyl engine, but nobody looks further. Volvo has manual seat folders and manual steering column what about that for reliability, nobody talks about this why ? All those electric motors and linkages in Mercedes seat folder those wont ever go bad, yeah oh really, I mean that is ridiculous.
BIGWEBB88 That is how Mercedes attract customers, they will keep the exterior and change the interior later, and then change the exterior but keep the interior, keep the loop
Guys I learned tons for my car channel. Amazing humilty facts and presentation. Cameras lovely proving u can look great with action cam - relief. Content brilliant. Best reviewers on RUclips. And in Britain we buy cars too so seeing this kind of review helps your minutes :)
When is the last time you have seen it go through a round of crash testing? I'd take a modern SUV - Volvo XC90 or GLS for the sake of my families safety over design. Is the roof reinforced with modern steels to deal with high speed rollovers like the XC90 or GLS?
Owned a 2011 BMW X5. Bought the Volvo after looking at the newer X5, the Q7, GLS and MDX. For the money, an XC90 with the Inscription trim level and upgraded speakers can't be beat for overall quality/performance/enjoyability. Volvo service at my local dealership destroys service at our BMW and MB dealer in terms of responsiveness, friendliness, turn around time. No major hiccups at 15K miles.
actually both the T6 and T8s real fuel economy are really bad. like the official figure says around 10L/100km for the T6 with combined driving, but the real world testing shows around 14L/100km if not more. lets face it with a 4 cylinder engine to crank out 300+hp, the engine really needs to work extremely hard. With todays technology 4 cylinder engines really cant pull such a big vehicle. Im personally driving a 2016 X5 30d with M sport package and average 10L/100km. Turbo 6 cylinder engines are the best choices for large SUV in this segment. I did test drive both the D5 and T6 in the XC90. I suggest u go to a dealer and do that and ull be surprised at how noisy the D5 is (4cylinder diesel noise) and just how normal the 300+hp in the T6 feels.
My dad has always owned BMWs and my mum has always owned Volvos and in a German car when you are going fast you know it but in the Volvos when your going fast it’s smooth quiet and your going surprisingly fast
I'd take the Volvo. But there is something to be said about the quality of the Mercedes. When you call for an ambulance here in Denmark, they always send two vehicles. A traditional big ambulance, and a faster response car, that has a doctor and all the important equipment on board. And that car is, with maybe one exception in the whole country, always a Mercedes ML / GLE.. Because they just always work, and can handle the abuse that emergency vehicles are are taking.
Took you 20min to get in the back of the Volvo? 20min to pull a lever? you got to be kidding me... You are the only one i heared complaining about the 3rd row accessability.
I understand the GLS 550 being overpriced but there is the cheaper GLS 450 which has a base price of $69K just like the XC90. They should have tested that.
I agree with Nathan, the XC90 is one of the best looking cars on the market. And the two row car is the base model now. I'd order mine with the R-Design package too.
The conclusion is spot-on. If wanting to tow a 3.5 ton trailer or carry seven large adults, the Mercedes is more suitable. Also there are cheaper versions of the Mercedes with smaller engines that match the Volvo better than that big mother tested. I have a friend who runs a Mercedes 350 GL diesel [last of the GL before facelift to GLS] with the 9-Gtronic and am used to travelling in it. Which is 'best'? It depends on the potential owner, but for my own part and having alternative vehicles to tow and not needing the rearmost seats, I've just ordered a Volvo with the D5 diesel in Inscription trim with the Winter Pack and Xenium with head-up display and that nice panoramic moonroof. Not getting the tow pack at all, because I have a Land Cruiser and Ford Ranger [european type] that can and do the towing. Ranger is a 2.2 litre diesel automatic that tows 3.5 tons with no problem.
$110,000 wOw!! Should of used a T8 Hybrid with 472 torque. No noise, whisper quiet. Quicker. Still $27,000 less and gets 35 mpg better ish!! How many GLS in Europe do they sell with that 4.7 twin? Hum!! I got it ! Get a $57,000 Volvo XC 90 for the family and a $53,000 S90 T6 sedan. Alabama !!!
My dad has a GLS550 but I think the reason he bought it is that he likes older interiors, he likes black and the night package defines that well, and he likes to go fast, which the 4.7 definitely provides lol.
I drove both cars however the GLS drive like a German car, very powerful, quite, very ergonomic interior and is one of the most reliable SUVs in the market.....together with the Lexus XL 570. Lexus is the number one and MB number two.
I think a 3.0 twincharged V6 would 1: provide more horsepower and torque. 2: be more reliable and 3: sound way better. Look into it, Volvo. I'm gonna patent this idea... Lol!
I can see spending a lot of time in the Volvo. I'm really liking the wood and leather. Rather than the carbon fiber in the Mercedes, I'd take some piano black wood and I would not add the lit up star on the grill.
Even if I had the extra $40K, I would still choose the Volvo over the Merc. Sure the Merc has more space in the 3rd row and more power, but the interior of the Volvo is so luxurious.
Literally own both of these. Love both of them but totally different vehicles. The XC90 interior and seating has held up perfectly and looks/smells new. Don’t realistically plan on rowing with it etc. it’s a safe, comfortable car. The 550 has brawn with the V8 and can tow. Both of these vehicles came with crap tires when new.
Why no mention of the more affordable and economical GLS 450? It starts at $68.7k (before incentives), 362 hp, 7500 towing capacity, 17/22 MPG, and no carbon fiber. I understand that you may not have had much choice for a press car, but at least mention that a much cheaper version with different interior combinations are available. That being said, I do think the Volvo is beautiful, but reluctant about the T6. Maybe the T5 will be more durable, but then I would choose the Volvo V90 cross country, which is even more beautiful.
how is the sound reduction? i leased a lexus nx200 for the first time lexus itself, and was very disappointed. I thought better quality but small things like interior and sound is a major importance. When I drive, I hear the road more than the radio. Again first time purchase for lexus but other cars I either rented or loaner. I had bmw nissan mercedes infiniti but never had this problem. Again, the only reason asking this is I am thinking about a new 7 seater vehicle. Would this Volvo be ok?
"Superturbo" it technically a misnomer as any turbocharged engine is a superturbo, a supercharger driven by a turbine. The proper shorthand is "twincharged".
Jim Lee I think LX570 compares better with Infiniti QX80. GLS450 is smaller than both of them and it's not based on a rugged truck platform like the Lexus and Infiniti.
The Volvo does not have the R-line package. Comparing the standard model against the AMG-trim Merc may not be fair :).The R-line package on the XC is really nice
Thanks for a rather objective review with pros and cons for both vehicles, and not my car is awesome, your car sucks like some do! Really likes the praise and criticisms when due. Keep it up!
I had driven GLS 350d and XC90 2.0litre.i likes GLS for its looks and XC90 for its interiors ..I'm confused what to choose between the two vehicles .which one to choose ?
cool that the chairs work like that in the merc.. but 20 minutes to get in the back of the volvo.... uhm... yeah no. can be done really fast. i know 20 minutes is not the real nimber but it's fast in the volvo;) just not automatic. but not worth 40k tho xD
xStephenn _ Range Rovers are the shittiest most unreliable car you can buy. Horribly overpriced and not worth the effort. Had mine in the shop every month.
I just saw both these cars out on the road the other day and both are absolutely stunning with an amazing road presence (they were both in black). However, just a couple of gripes about this review. You're comparing the GLS 550 to the XC90 when there's also a GLS 450 available in the US for $68,700. The 450 has a v6 3.0 twin turbo with less HP but better fuel economy. A much better comparison with the Volvo.
Family of 6 including two teens...third row is a huge consideration. May have to stick with a Denali or new Expedition. Looking at $75-$85k for those. That why we are cross shopping a CPO Merc. Q7, XC90, MDX...all too small in the back. The Volvo is super nice though. Merc for the engine and size, Volvo for everything else.
why don't you guys try taking them over Loveland pass behind a semi hauling a set of doubles in a snow storm for a real world test? you will appreciate more horsepower to pass with at altitude if the electronics last it may do it for 2 or 3 years before failing.
Reality check. When you're paying for it yourself (and it's already costing you $70k to begin with), finding an extra $40k and paying for 20% more fuel, for a car with worse interior and media system is a gap too far. Compare the Benz with a Range Rover and the Audi with a Cayenne or Q7 and then comparisons with their natural peers will make more sense. After trying all the genuine competition, I thought the Volvo was hands down the best; especially interior wise. In the US I waited seven months for my T6 Inscription (the waiting list is/was over a year in the UK) and I love it personally. And in Dynamic mode it's really fast - and I really mean that - I race motorcycle and I sold my Porsche Cayman S to buy it.
If I were in the fortunate financial position to even consider buying either of those, I'd go with the Merc all day long. The 2.0 4 cylinder in the Volvo is just too small for that size of vehicle.
Sir Time I don't agree. If you go for the T8 option, it most certainly won't be too small. Liters isn't everything. It's a supercharger and turbo hybrid. But yea i don't like 4 bangers either, so i wouldn't choose any of them. Bmw x6 all day long!
Strange world we are living in. Looking at this test right after de E Golf test...100,000$ for a SUV! So useful for a soccer mum and to do the grocery.
The xc90 did win European car of the year 2015 2016
I'd buy the Volvo if I had the money
Same
Same any day
Looking forward to pick up my 2020 Xc90 at the factory in Gothenberg Sweden.
The Volvo just looks so nice, especially the grill.
Why did you compare the T6 with a V8, you should use the T8. HP and price is more or less the same as the Mercedes.
We have a GL450, you just can't beat German engineering! It's quick, it's very responsive and it's pretty fun to drive! On the downside, it's never met a gas station it hasn't liked! But let's face it, if you're driving one of these, you're really not that concerned about the cost of fuel.
same. We have the GL500. Its a great car. I wouldn't trade it in with a Volvo.

I think the engine is pretty good. My mother owns a 2004 XC90 T5 (Turbocharged 5 cylinder) and it has never broken down.

I think Roman would've jumped ship had it been the T8
GLS is not a competitor to the Executive. It's not a 7 seater anymore.
Excellence*
You test the top of the line SUV in the case of Mercedes, but you didnt test the Volvo XC90 T8 R-Design
Exactly! I wonder why they did that.
The R-Design is below the inscription technically. It should have been the XC90 Excellence though to compare with the price of the Mercedes.
Point is they didn't get the T8 twin engine version which is designed to compete with the V8's. The T6 is designed to compete with V6's.
The amg gls 63 is the top dog with 577hp
Actually the inscription is the top of the line and is only available in t6

Give me a G Class over a GLS anyday. Timeless design
When is the last time you have seen it go through a round of crash testing? I'd take a modern SUV - Volvo XC90 or GLS for the sake of my families safety over design. Is the roof reinforced with modern steels to deal with high speed rollovers like the XC90 or GLS?
'modern steels' ..... say what?
There are steel formulations that exist today that cars are being made from that did NOT exist 10 years ago.
The GLS is 7seats and G-class 4 ? Why would you even compare ?
The new Volvo interior is awesome! I'm a valet and I used to hate volvos until I got the 2017 model and I was blown away!!
Merc interiors are reminiscent of a mafia boss's funeral casket, all piano black and silver.
Owned a 2011 BMW X5. Bought the Volvo after looking at the newer X5, the Q7, GLS and MDX. For the money, an XC90 with the Inscription trim level and upgraded speakers can't be beat for overall quality/performance/enjoyability. Why didn't you compare the XC90 to the Mercedes GLE?
Put the money aside, if the volvo had at least a V6 i would choose the volvo without even thinking about the GLS
Get the 475 HP 6.4L Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT V8 if you can't accept the fact that the Volvo XC90 T6 has a 316 hp fuel efficent 4 cylinder.
You can "build" a xc90 T8 - tons of power with the added electric - for about $73 K in the inscription trim on the Volvo US website. Very appealing.
Tom Crisp Or that!! Volvo released a T8 polestar software update and power is boosted to 421. All with out compromising efficiency...
actually both the T6 and T8s real fuel economy are really bad. like the official figure says around 10L/100km for the T6 with combined driving, but the real world testing shows around 14L/100km if not more. lets face it with a 4 cylinder engine to crank out 300+hp, the engine really needs to work extremely hard. And you would still be far short of the experience of a GLS 550.
The Mercedes Benz is gorgeous and the red looks amazing on it.

The GLS starts to look a bit dated now, compared to a brand new (and very well designed) car like the Volvo. Time for the next Generation.
wish you had the q7 to bring along.

cool that the chairs work like that in the merc.. but 20 minutes to get in the back of the volvo.... uhm... yeah no. can be done really fast. i know 20 minutes is not the real nimber but it's fast in the volvo;) just not automatic. but not worth 40k tho xD
We own a S-550 and we are looking for a large SUV and we looked at a GLS550 and it's not really worth it. We are testdriving a Range Rover today.
xStephenn _ you must be very rich
ครђ CΦƦΦฤล how?
xStephenn _ you own a Mercedes and wanna get a range rover XD
ครђ CΦƦΦฤล the S-class is a 2013 and the Range Rover is a 2015 so they aren't new
xStephenn _ Range Rovers are the shittiest most unreliable car you can buy. Horribly overpriced and not worth the effort. Had mine in the shop every month.
How about the bentley bentayga
ILLUMINATUS Too expensive. Not worth the price.
Clax the video is about the best one so you shouldn't look at the price then
ILLUMINATUS Tell me... what country is Bentley from?
What about the Audi Q7?
I bought the volvo a week ago today. The volvo has a 400hp version avalible. Why did you not test that one.
why don't you guys try taking them over Loveland pass behind a semi hauling a set of doubles in a snow storm for a real world test? you will appreciate more horsepower to pass with at altitude if the electronics last it may do it for 2 or 3 years before failing.
You should’ve tested the GLS 450. It starts at $69,000. Gets up to about $90,000 with options
You are doing a great job
Roman, can you do a video on the f pace vs the evoque or the new disco sport?
I like the Mercedes but...I’m for Volvo ...FOR LIFE !
No Audi q7?
That dated interior of the Merc has to go already.
And it just got a 2017 redesign. Shame
Love the Volvo but that new Mercedes is so beautiful.
I love the XC90
xc90
You didnt try the T8 :(
If I were in the fortunate financial position to even consider buying either of those, I'd go with the Merc all day long.
Why no T8????
Another awesome segment, guys! Love the new Volvo.
Strange world we are living in. Looking at this test right after de E Golf test...100,000$ for a SUV! So useful for a soccer mum and to do the grocery.
