    Diesels rule! Love my W210 1997 E300 (non-turbo). I get 25mpg city / 35hwy. Easy to maintain. She's never left me stranded. And at 146,000 miles, she's just broken in! Thanks for the diesel evangelism, MotoMan!

    I just bought a used 2016 GL350 Bluetec instead of a new GLS 450. I’m glad that I did. If MB wants new customers like me the need to find a way to bring the diesel back to the US.

    Great review! I have a 2014 GL350 and absolutely love it. It is hands-down superior to the 450 because of the luxurious torque. I was a bit concerned that the new version with the 9-speed wouldn't be as quick and responsive because of a Car and Driver review, and actually test driving a GLS350d is next to impossible because of their rarity here in the US. But I think you've convinced me that it'd be worth pursuing. My personal reason for choosing a diesel over one of the gasoline versions is obviously not for fuel economy - though it's a nice bonus - it's the torque! The range is also far better. Also, an SUV is not supposed to be a sports car, so 0-60 acceleration is the lesst of my concerns. An SUV should be strong, tough, and confident, and that is whar the GL350 is. I'm hoping this latest iteration is the same. Now excuse me while I go try to find one to test-drive...

    My preface: I would buy this vehicle used, 2 years old, can't afford new. That being said I would definitely consider the mpg advantage of the diesel combined with the fact that the driving dynamics would be so smooth and effortless having such a great low end torque. That's what luxury without sport intentions is all about. This car is supposed to be a family hauler to cruise the choppy roads of NYC. That being said I wish they did tune the engine to have more power rather than low end torque because from a numbers standpoint I believe it already had a sufficient amount of torque already.

    I would totally get this car. We have the GL 350 Bluetec. We love it because of the fuel economy and torque. We have pulled horse trailers, boats, and other assorted trailers with our GL and it has done wonderfully. It is such a great car

  • @yabed1977

    I also bought my GL350 to tow a 7400lb boat. While towing it was spending less fuel than my old Range Rover Sport SS. Love the Diesel.

    Owner of 2016 GL350 BLUETEC: You want to know why people buy the diesel? Well,personally, it kinda is fuel economy. Sure we do the normal things like the the school run. It’s nice for city driving because you don’t have to fill up very often. But we also take lots of long road trips with 4 of us, luggage and 2 labradors.With the diesel, this beast does a 10hr, 500 mile road trip easily. The V6 turbodiesel makes it easy. It does both pavement and dirt, no problem. We haul things. With 7500lbs of towing capacity, this thing is a beast for a unibody SUV. We haul boats and horses and other various trailers with it, no problem. We do light off road, perfectly capable. This thing is amazing. That’s what we do with it. And for those reasons, diesel is best.
    .
    There, now you know.

  • @arrjee9474
    @arrjee9474 6 лет назад

    I love it for it’s fuel economy, (approx 500 mi locally and approx. 650 on the highway), and less wear and tear. The engine runs cooler than a gas engine so it is good for many more miles. MANY more. Oil change every 10,000 mi! And not really loud. Never thought a diesel could take off like that either ... neither do the other drivers on the road.

    Torque ,torque and more torque.
    One of the owners of AMG made a good point in an interview with a German magazine 40 years ago . There is no substitute to torque , except , more torque.

    great review. i'm a merc c220 owner. and it is absolutelly more eficient and with more torque than the 1.8l or even the 2.3l compressor. fuel comsuption is half on the diesel compared to the petrol, especialy in traffic. these are the general reasons to always choose the diesel benz. it s stupid to buy a petrol mercedez just for the firts three seconds of driving

  • @jhmcd2
    @jhmcd2 7 лет назад

    For me its fuel efficiency. Just because you get a large expensive car, doesn't mean you want to spend all day at a gas pump, got to pay for that thing. The power would be next, and diesels don't quit. And from what I have heard, they can be cheaper to maintain and tend to last longer, that's why they are used in commercial vehicles which can be expected to live a million miles or more.

  • @yabed1977

    I got my 2012 GL350 Diesel because the Diesel keeps its value and less maintenance. Also you can easily double the mileage on the Diesel vs. a gasoline engine which will probably break down sooner. I Love my GL 350 and would buy another one in a heartbeat.

  • @domy0611

    I am an Europeen guy and I took the diesel because it is the better package. An heavy car isn't sportive and it wouldn't to. In that car you need a relax way of driving with all that another traffic around you.

  • @aryapradhanad186
    @aryapradhanad186 7 лет назад

    I prefer diesel because of the torque, I'm not the guy that hoons a car everytime, I just want effortless acceleration when overtaking and that's where diesels excel at, I also drive off road and the torque of a diesel engine is available on low rpm plus with low range gear it is a beast off road. Also I do road trips every 3 months or so and diesel is perfect for these kind of task because it has longer range which means less fill ups and diesel has better economy when you drive it at constant speed. So these are my reasons why I prefer diesel.

  • @JG-rh3qp

    Very nice review. I'm relatively new to your channel but wanted to chime in about the Diesel engine in these SUVs. In regard to your question at the end, I have a 2015 GL350 (which replaced a 2008 GL320) and definitely bought both for the fuel economy. Now, don't get me wrong, I love the luxury and the torque and everything else, but I put a lot of miles on the car and the fuel economy is a great advantage in a car of this size. I'm definitely not a diesel-head but my first Merc was a 1981 240D, which was passed down to my sons. I think the odometer broke in the mid 90s with 100K+ on it and they probably put another 100k on it before we got rid of it. The mechanics would always say the engine was in great shape even as the car around it was falling apart! These Mercedes diesels are great cars and I look forward to seeing what they do in the future!

    Why I love diesel because less stop to fill up and more power and reliability than petrol engine and lastly if you ever met with accident it will not start the fire unlike petrol cars.

    In Germany very few people would order a gas engine. Diesel is the default choice, it also fits better to the cars character. Big block torque with small block economy. Most Mercedses are limited to 250 kmh anyway.

    Hey, watching this video again for the third time since last year. I know you don't really compare cars, but how about doing a comparison between this and the Land Cruiser 200 Series 4.5 ltr Twin Turbo V8 diesel (yes, it sounds like it has massively better specs, especially because of the V8 and twin turbos, but I do not think it really does).
    I also don't really know about the Lexus LX 570 and the GLS 500. In terms of design, the Lexus this time round seems to have hit the nail on the head.

    Towing is important to me. When towing your MPG drops a LOT but it drops a lot less with a diesel. I think I will replace my V8 BMW X5 with a GLS 350 next year when my lease ends. The MB has 1500 lb higher tow rating than BMW. 7500 vs 6000

    Someone get Dave on the phone!I agree regarding Designo, very high end & quality materials, its a must-check on the option list ... Totally worth the extra few grands!as for the diesel, I don't have a case for getting one with diesel over the V8 ... Perhaps people in Europe buy it for tax-related issues or the price of gas there.on a sidenote, have you noticed that diesel V6s make 255hp? (expect for BMW's M50d line) ... I know its all about torque with diesels, but it's kinda odd.as always, excellent episode M!

  • @majorpain449
    @majorpain449 8 лет назад

    Why i would buy the diesel over the gas variant is this (1) The range is better on a diesel, visiting the fuel pump 30% less is great (2) longer service intervals (3) i stay on the road longer in terms of durability, thats if i decide to keep it for a long time (4) I dont know about modern diesels but i had an older Mercedes and my alternater quit working on a road trip and guess what? I was able to drive it all through the day and right before sunset i found a motel near a mechanic shop and got it replaced ie saving me on the cost of a tow truck.

    I want a GLS diesel because it is loaded with torque, has an amazing range between fill ups and it will last so long I can leave it to my grand kids. But also, for some strange reason I just love the sound of a Bluetech diesel engine. It has a mellow grinding sound that is very pleasing

Also we're in a fuel crisis 6yrs later, so what else is new. If I didn't live on the East Coast I would continue with my E350 which has been trouble free for last 60k miles.

    I live in a part of the world (Tanzania) where fuel (at least good quality fuel) tends to be scarce outside of major metropolitan areas. That's why fuel economy and range are critical for us when we travel outside of the city into more remote parts of the country. I would buy the Diesel for that reason. Otherwise, I would go for the GL63 AMG.

    on your question of diesel in such an upmarket car the simple reason for getting it is that you don't have to visit as many fuel stops as you would with a petrol equivalent. I thought the GLS looked very domineering in the video with a nice interior but not the best ever seen, try Rolls Royce for that and maybe look at the new Bentley 4x4 as an uglier but better alternative with the better interior.

  • @majorcalvary6515

    I have a 2015 GL350. I love it, but my wife hates it. She does not like the slow acceleration. I love the loud engine noise. To me, MBZ diesel is the best diesel engine in the world. However, I read that new diesel engines are not as good as the old. Some mechanics also claim that EPA has require diesel engine to use certain lube oil that is literally useless. MBZ complied, and Ford has blew them off. They also claim that many MB dealers aren't even really qualified to service diesel engine. Also I believe MBZ has temporarily suspended sale of diesel in US since VW scandal. Now all diesel are dirty until proven other wise. I also have to get smog checked every 2 years. There is no 6 year break like the petro engine. I just feel like the EPA and tree huggers in the US wants diesel out of US. It's funny, I thought these tree huggers were the typical VW diesel owners. I guess they feel being betrayed.

    Thanks much for your review. Why I use Diesel engine for MBz vehicles? 1) Fuel efficiency (mpg) translates to longer distance travelled per tank full. 2) Diesel can be stored longer than gasoline (additives can extend diesel to 2 years or longer). 3) In crisis and emergency situations, Diesel fuel can be found more abundant (military vehicles use diesel). 4) Diesel Engines (especially MBz) are known to last more than 500,000 km. 5) Diesel engine compatible fuels can be made and used. 6) Diesel engines doesn't require spark plugs so, no spark plug change. 7) Diesel engines have more torque and it doesn't down shift going up hills on interstate (my gasoline ML430 down shifts often) also good for hauling. 8) Here in the US, we have excess Diesel fuel and we are starting to see lower prices for diesel. 9) Diesel fuel is less volatile than gasoline and diesel fumes stays in the container (diesel 5 gal tanks) in warmer temperature. These are some reasons to start out with.

    I’m getting ready to purchase a medium-large diesel suv for work/commute. Every 2-3 weeks I go from Iowa to Ohio and return back to Iowa. Because I run on I 80 and I 65 around the southside of Chicago in the winter why I need a diesel suv.
    The 2 finalist is this rig(benz gls350 diesel)
    And
    BMW X5 diesel. There’s 2 reasons I’m leaning toward the bmw the engine an I-6. And the design of I-6 diesel in almost all semis, tractors, construction equipment ,heavy equipment. 2. The bmw a little cheaper. Only thing I’m worried about with bmw I had a friend who had a bmw and the dealer was TERRIBLE simply because she didn’t buy it there. I’ve heard good things about Benz service department.

    I cannot think of a reason why the G500 or maybe it is the G550 now, is not offered in the U.S. without a diesel option. And as far as why I would buy this automobile with a diesel option...why wouldn't I? The diesel engines last almost forever. They give you much better mileage ratings and if you ever needed to tow anything, you could certainly do it with this.

      No choice - Benz - unless I had a penchant for pain, then I would do the Rover and set up a budget for repairs and/or depreciation worse than the economic collapse of 2008.

    I really wonder what they are going to do with the interior of the upcoming GLS since they call it the ''S-Class of SUV's''. This version 'only' has the interior of the ML (or GLE), witch is a little bit disappointing.

    Hey MotoMan, i wanted to ask you about the GLE coupe you did the review for, it is said that they have a new chassis called the C292 unlike the W variant for the normal GLE, when would the lifeline for this chassis the C292 last for until its changed or facelifted or whatever like the C class change and stuff? and is it worth it to buy the Gle Coupe now under the impression that its a new chassis but looks familiar on the interior or what? What would you advise? P.S. i live in Cyprus next to Greece and Italy. Thank you.

      +Cromeimu Thanks for reaching out and good question . . . I wouldn't look at this as a question of buying a car with an upcoming change in mind - chassis, interior or otherwise. Because at the end of the day, you KNOW any OEM is going to change a car and your car will become the outdated model. So two things: If have the latest model is important to you, I would suggest buying very early in the product cycle after a total redesign. I.e. - buying a C Class or a Hyundai Genesis now. If you are not as fussed with it and REALLY like the car, then buy it knowing this a car you are going to stick with for whatever your car intervals are. As an aside, Mercedes generally keeps designs around longer than other OEMs, but that said, every OEM is starting to update design more frequently as the industry has gotten significantly more competitive. In this specific case, expect an update in 3 or so years for a TOTALLY new GLE with a GLE coupe to follow thereafter. Hope that answers the question. And lastly, BEAUTIFUL place you live - Yasou!

      +MotoManTV it is kind of an important thing for me in regards to the model and cycle as in this country the depreciation is ridiculous, so yeah the GLE coupe C292 has just started production in may of 2015 and supposedly when would the chassis cycle end seeing as this chassis is not in line with the normal GLE W chassis would you advise me buying this car at this time seeing as it's just been released last year in may 2015 or should I wait? And would they be changing the entire car soon or since its from 2015 it's going to stay for a while?

    Is it normal for these diesels to run hotter than the gasser engines? The MB gas motors seem to run between 85-90 this one seems to be right at the 100c mark. I know BMWs run stupid hot at 120c but usually MBs run cooler.

      He was running it up & down the Tyrolean Alps with some amount of alacrity, so I would expect the engine temperature to be on the higher side towards 100°. But to answer your original question...No, diesels do not run "hotter" than their gasoline counterparts. Even in stop & go city driving, my Mercedes Diesel's temperature gauge stays right in the middle (85-90°). Hope that answers your question.

    I will get a diesel GLS because it is a little cheaper, saving on fuel, and it has less emission for the environment.

    Supposing that I have the money to buy something like this, I would choose the diesel all the way, I would strip the leather away and put raw cheap plastic all over the place instead, change floors to rubber, put a snorkel and go to plow a lake with it, and drag fish with a net.
