I looked up the ages of the grandchildren - Isabela and Dolores are both 21, Luisa is 19, Camilo and Mirabel are both 15 and Antonio is 5. So Camilo is a few months older than Mirabel and likely remembers next to nothing about Bruno since they would both have been 5 when he ‘left’. It’s interesting with that to consider how he describes him as 7 feet tall, when it is evident that he is actually quite small in stature and barely taller than Mirabel. I think Bruno and Mirabel have so much in common in their experiences in the family, they are both blamed for all the problems. But I feel that Mirabel’s character design is also somewhat based on Pedro because she is supposed to bring that miracle back and heal and protect the family in the way he did with his sacrifice.
I love your reviews and stumbled upon them looking up videos about this movie. I think it’s so nice to examine the emotional experiences of the characters instead of focusing only on the music and animation (which is obviously excellent but there’s only so much to say about it).

I've watched this movie six times and I cry every time. The songs are phenomenal, the expressive faces and movements of the characters are a hidden gem . Did you notice how the characters DANCE while talking as well as singing? I especially noticed Mirabel dancing against her will during "We don't talk about Bruno". I also love that Abuela and Mirabel were able to have that loving relationship in the end. I wish I were able to have that kind of closure with my own grandmother before she passed away.

I've been watching lots of Encanto reactions because I'm kind of obsessed with this movie and I'm so happy you talked about Abuela shutting Pepa's emotions. Pepa isn't one of the main characters so lots of people just don't get what she's going through, almost everyone just laughs at her clouds or say "that power sucks" but you understood the way they dismiss her emotions and how awful it is. Also, Bruno telling her just that (everyone just gets distracted by the Frozen reference, and I can't blame them but still). Thanks for this video!

I came to this movie for escape.
    I left it feeling seen.
My family doesn't speak to me. I saw too many things they'd rather remain blind about. And I'm sure that's far from rare...but they raised me to value the truth, and to explore science, and to never take the easy path, so what did they think was going to happen?
That I'd prove them right? That I'd embrace their every prejudice?
I used to be their favorite, now I'm a cautionary tale of the damned.
What hurts the worst is the found family I thought I had....they don't speak to me either. And how much can I say here, before I'm saying too much? Burdening you with my pain?
Especially when you're already feeling so many other people's pain already?
    So nevermind all that.
    How are you, today?
As far as something similar to Encanto, I'd recommend Stephen Universe. It adores metaphorical superpowers. And in much the same way. Plus, it's sometimes a musical. But it can be wildly uneven. And it starts off trying to trick you into thinking it's a lot more shallow than what it becomes. I'd recommend a viewing guide before trying it? But the viewing guides don't even agree with each other. So a cautious recommendation, because the highs are so very high. And it helped me through some rough times, once.

      @@rissawatches8581
As long as you're certain...there's nowhere else I can really vent.
So, the friend I thought of as a big sister was hiding a crush. Her love was never the same sense of family as what she claimed, and she abandoned me for her own sanity the first chance she had.
The friend who I let take my virginity? Turns out she was only attracted to my fear of sex. The second she couldn't get that fear, was the second she stopped feeling any attraction. But what if she gave me that fear again? What if she didn't listen when I said no, and just took what she wanted?
If I really meant no, wouldn't I have won that struggle? Who freezes when they're under attack?
Another friend masturbated under the covers when I hung out at his place, and then tried to lie about it. My last new friend took things a lot further, a lot faster, and I let myself believe in true love, one more time...but everything changed after she satisfied her curiosity about our sexual connection, and I couldn't afford to just sweep her away afterwards.
This doesn't even begin to cover it all.
And I'm sick of being desired. Especially because it just reminds me of all my flaws. My voice is hot enough to masturbate to, but not hot enough to have difficult conversations with? If I'm so cute, why am I invisible in public? Why are the only people attracted to me, all sharing very specific kinks, and only ever attracted to the limerence and the lust?
I feel like a bad joke.
This is a problem a lot of men (and some women) seem to want, kinky sex without ever making a real connection, so why can't it happen to one of them instead? I'm too old for this. And I never wanted this problem in the first place.
I know that I'm not perfect. There's plenty of times where I was the one in the wrong - I was raised in purity culture and abused as a kid, so...
So I'd panic whenever someone was attracted to me, especially if I was attracted to them...and say things I didn't mean...
But I faced those fears. Some really good people taught me how to give and receive love - in all its forms. And I thought...I hoped...that at the end of that journey, I'd belong somewhere. I'd be home, at last. You know?
      But I'm not.
I help pay rent here. My roommates are loyal friends who sometimes enjoy my company. But they're usually off doing their own thing.
And whenever I want more of a connection with someone else....It never happens until I stop wanting one. And only lasts until I question how real it is.
What's the point? Maybe there's no place for someone as damaged as me. Maybe I'm the selfish one, for wanting more than people can offer...

To break the chains and be freed from pain. We are not perfect in anyway and we will stumble and make mistakes. The important thing is to get back up together and reaping each others mistakes and keep moving forward. Learn from our mistakes and most important FORGIVENESS. We all never mention it that much, it is what will bring bonds together once again. It’s not easy, but it is possible and so dam powerful like you have no idea. I agree that the miracle is the grandfather’s sacrifice. I can imagine that the grandfather is seeing how his miracle is creating so much pressure and anxiety on his family and creating a rift. I bet he’s not happy about it, and thought that if the miracle would hurt them this much, they’re better off without it. They had to love each other and themselves as people and a family, and see the miracle as an accessory, instead of it being their defining feature. The miracle was meant to help them, not define them. Grandpa wasn’t happy with his wife. He did send a butterfly to stand in the exact spot where he died to rekindle their connection too.

It was amazing how you not only understood the emotions the family went through but felt them. Disney did a wonderful job on Encanto. The villain was the toxicity the family projected on each other as well as themselves. Not a toxicity of hate but misguided love and concern.

A lot of the fear was also probably since if they lose the encanto they also lose the safety and protection of it - People can come *in* again - they could come attack and murder them all again.
(With Pepa I always thought it was partly having to stay perfect but also partly the annoyance of constantly having to be wet - she also probably had to fight against her own annoyance against her own emotions because just having them means she has to be soaked. Constantly. You can see it as she's wringing out her sons stuff because the cloud ended up popping up. It's probably a really rough power for all of them (I loved that in the end she was able to embrace it more though)
I hope this movie helped be cathartic for so many people. It hit a lot of chords with so many people and they did such a good job making it accessible for all ages - whether they related or maybe saw family in a different light after seeing it.

Immediately after I first saw this movie I knew it was going to stick with me forever. There are so many beautiful messages about self worth, expectations, what it means to really be a family, and so much more. I never expected a Disney movie to handle topics like that, much less do so as wonderfully as this movie did. All the different family members having their own expectations to overcome; Louisa doesn't need to be indestructible, Isabela doesn't need to be perfect, Pepa doesn't need to stifle her emotions, there are so many takeaways that are great to hear and internalize. Phenomenal movie, and your insights were a delight as well.

Thank you for such a deeply compassionate, heartfelt reaction to this special movie! A few thoughts that came up while raptly watching you:
I agree 100% on Abuela protecting the candle, and the miracle, as protecting her connection to Pedro. But I think she made a mistake in deciding the miracle is defined by his sacrifice, and she led her whole family to live lives of sacrifice to be "worthy" of it.
In the immediate crisis, Abuela put the needs of others ahead of her emotions, as we often must do in those moments. But I think those needs got tangled up in her interpretation of events, prevented her from processing her own feelings, and so she's still wearing her mourning shawl 50 years later. She buried her own grief & terror (horrible even without triplets to raise without your partner!) in the leadership of her little band of traumatized refugees, who looked to her because she held the candle that defended them and let them stop running. She made them feel safe again, so she had to (try to/pretend to) be the strong one, the perfect one, the wise one, the nurturing one all by herself, so she didn't re-create that terror of loss for them. She must have sheltered them all in Casita at first, then helped organize the building of the other homes, the market square, the farmland, etc. (Maybe that's why some of the houses lean, and the church needs moving, cos they were all amateur builders?) And that grew naturally into a familial obligation to the community, and preventing their gifts from causing envy or fear because they were used for the good of all.
But the thing is, the candle didn't flare with magic when Pedro made his brave decision, or stepped away from his family, or raised his hands against their attackers, or even when he fell - the magic isn't tied to his sacrifice. It flared during Abuela's GRIEF, after he died, and her mama-bear realization that no one else would be able to stop those machetes from coming across the river to her vulnerable babies. It's about PROTECTING what you love, creating SHELTER so the young ones have a chance to grow. The whole Encanto is a chrysalis, and if its walls hadn't eventually cracked, then it would have failed in its purpose.

I watched this after your reaction on Surface Pressure xD
And damn this movie is indeed hit home. The first one ever Disney made and hit home at every moment. Damn, and I cried at the very first part too! and I balled so hard when she sang Waiting for Miracle like, girl I want to give her hugs and love 😭 Mirabel looked so small and like an outcast of the family. I'm glad that her cousin, and family (minus Abruela) at least have people that recognize her more or less. But like, not totally believe or understand her much. (But I literally feel madddd and like, upset when they did the family photo and not even one of them call for Mirabel like yo people 😭 /but i know why they have to do that for the story hng)
The whole family's so broken... minus Felix and Augustin at least, I'm grateful for the two men for their love to their wives and children. I especially love how Felix deal with his wife with so much care. The part where he sang "what a joyous day" in we dont talk about Bruno really tells that he's actually happy despite the weather his soon-to-be wife caused back then. And my most favourite part of Flix and Pepa is when Pepa is snowing and Abuela said that she has a cloud (again) and Pepa was like, I know. You are lucky it's not a hurricane and Felix was like, yeah and his look, HIS LOOK at Abuela I love it so much.
I really upset with Abuela Elma when she shut Pepa's emotions too it's just- yo look at Felix and Camilo?? Look at how they handle her emotion in even better way. Like, they try to make her felt better and TRY TO DO something (+Bruno too, he wants his sis to LET IT OUT it's alright) while Abuela be like "Pepa, cloud", "Pepa, calm down" like, yo, that's her emotion. Don't say how she should feel and shouldn't???
I actually understand the grief Abuela had more or less... to lose someone so dear to you and holding on to that without moving on. But, but to me it's still not justify what she did to her family she wanted to protect. And the ending felt not- not enough to me. (With that apologise and hug, it's not gonna fix things in long term but I appreciate the beginning)
I feel like Pepa side of family got... curse more than blessing (Antonio's at least better than his sibling and mama but still) (oh and Bruno too...) xD while Julieta side... held so much pressure (from what they show, Abruela seems to rely on the Perfect Isabela and the Strong Luisa sigh but i bet the other would feel as pressure.. and Pepa😭)
I love the tiny details of this story too which can be seen the more you re-watched this. The uncomfortable look on Isabela, the way Dolores cover her ears when things get too loud for her. The animation is soooo well those little details are so good. Their clothes, the symbolisms by butterfly and other things including the colors. Just, wow!
    And thank you for your sympathy on Mariano. A lot of people hate him. But he's just... has sooo much love ;v;
Your reaction is so, so REAL and DEEP. I love this so much!
ps. I wish they make more of the little story of this family. I adore the granchildren so much xD and I love Pepa side of family while I also adore the relationship on Julieta side of family too xD i want to see Bruno interact with his other nieces and nephews too xD

The cracks also first appeared when she started allowing herself to feel her emotions shortly after her cousin gets his room. I love how Disney did a movie about generation trauma. I love your reactions, their so full of your thoughts and emotions, that's all I could ask for from a reaction, it reminds me of how I felt and all my thoughts while watching, brings me back like were having an actual conversation while watching the movie. ALSO I CANT BELIEVE YOU CALLED MIRABEL A SQUIB!!! LMFAO!

I wonder if you ever saw a movie "What dreams may come" with Robin Williams, when I was young it helped me with topics of depression & death & gave me some sort of hope just dealing with life, but somehow it not really popular it seems :(

I love how authentic you are in your reactions. Few people go into as much depth as you do on what the characters are feeling.
As far as how this movie has impacted me personally, well let's say it has been far too long since I've seen a movie that this good at demonstrating poor family dynamics and I don't think I've ever seen a movie so good at demonstrating how to HEAL from poor family dynamics!
I also am obsessed with Bruno because I don't think I've ever seen a character who I've felt so strongly represented by.
I could spill my guts about that here but I feel like this would get too long if I did so I'll just leave it at that.
But yeah this movie makes me feel like a teenager again, only it's not a bad thing because I actually understand the lessons now.
Also I am PRAYING that this means we'll start to see more wholesome children's media! 🥺

Mariano is the unsung normie hero... he gets punted in the face twice, after being rejected publicly... and he's still the guy leading the pack when the village comes to help rebuild.
Abuela was partially an antagonist.. but not really.. she was mostly a victim too.
her PTSD was the prime instigator of the generational trauma... and she never had a moment to herself. She put on the black scarf when Pedro died and only took it off after the flashback in the end.. much like she hold on to her grief for his loss for 50 years and probably never took the time and space to come to terms with her grief and her trauma.
On top of that, she was given a magic candle and no instruction manual. she had no powers herself, instead she had 3 small babies, plus an entire village, that depended on her and looked to her for guidance.
she was probably terrified of doing anything that might make the magic go away and, much like immigrants from less fortunate countries often do, imposed on herself (and then the rest of the family) a moral obligation.. they had to deserve the magic, deserve the safe haven, be virtuous and strive to be the best they could, to serve the family for the common good and hope that that would be enough to keep the magic running...
Then her youngest (at the time) grandchild fails to get a door.. is the magic dying? she asks her son for help but 4 decades of strained relationships make that request go awry.. instead, for reasons he never tells her, he leaves.
Alma spent the last 10 years waiting for the other shoe to drop... terrified of what a second failure might mean for the the magic, the village, the family, their survival and safety... and she has absolutely no control over the candle and no direct hands on understanding of how powers work.
she's done the best she could, under the circumstances...
She probably sees Mirabel as the reason why Bruno left (which is actually accurate).. and a potential first sign of the end of the magic... she must have developed some resentment towards her for making her worry for a decade.
Not discounting how badly she treated Mirabel... but I do understand where that came from.

This is my favorite animated movie, if not favorite movie full stop of all time. I feel for all the characters but I think Abuela had it worst, closely followed by Bruno who had to live in the walls of his own house for 10 years. But man, that kind of war trauma is unimaginable to those of us that haven't been through it. My grandmother was a child in WW2 and it's still affecting her to this day. Abuela is still wearing a black shawl to mark her mourning 50 years later. What a burden. Not that that makes it okay to abuse your family but still.

If you want, you could watch the "How to train your Dragon" trilogy. But well... The second film... It could be a little problematic... For you especially. But! It's a great trilogy.
From Disney you could watch "Tangled". A bit less problematic.
