  • Just as emotional as Surface Pressure. Reconciliation and forgiveness in films always get to me; they're just so powerful. It's never too late to reach out and re-connect(as long as it wasn't toxic) especially after what we've all been through these last few years. Cherish today and look forward to tomorrow, because while there may be a tomorrow for you there may not be one for others. And most of all don't forget to love you. You are very special and deserve the same love for yourself that you give to others. :)
Please recommend something for me to watch!

"We see how brave you've been"
That's where I lost it. They finally see that.

One thing I really love in this: “We have no gifts, but we are many.”
The love they showed the community all this time, even if they don’t have the magic gifts anymore, the rest of their town is out there waiting to help them too. Their gifts aren’t necessary to protect the town anymore because they are all in it together.

Also Antonio walking Mirabel to the door, like she did for him 😭

I also really get hit when I see Pepa and Julieta react to seeing Bruno. This is their brother, they are triplets so they grew up side by side, and they suddenly see him again after he was lost for 10 years.
I wonder if the sibling relationships are more easily repaired because they grew up together, knowing each other before their gifts and knowing the true person without magic. ‘You’re more than just your gift’, it takes Mirabel to say it because she never had a gift, but they all would have had relationships before they got their gift that would inform their sense of self. But once the gift comes, that becomes their whole identity, when there’s so much more going on in their internal life.
Also I LOVE the theory of Mirabel becoming the next matriarch. I want to see Encanto 2: Next Generation with Abuela Mirabel.

I think the major downside of having the gifts and the powers is that so much of the relationship becomes one-way, and the townspeople never really had an opportunity to give back in return. But that deprives the person with the gifts of the knowledge of how much they are cared about, and how much the townspeople have their back, and so the Madrigals falsely believed that they were working without a net, and that was a source of a great deal of their fear. In their minds, if they didn’t carry everything they were done for. But there was so much more underlying Grace in their community than they realized, and it wasn’t until they had matters fall apart that they could realize that they would be carried in turn.

Can you imagine Abuela's fear or hopelessness when the house finally started to fall and the candle just melted. Probably relived Pedro's tragedy and the empty stare she has while contemplating the house's debris, and yet she was still able to identify how she needed to fix what she caused on Mirabel. I think Abuela isn't really understood by many people.

That scene in which she is sitting in the debris, it is a moment of introspection that I have not actually seen much in the analysis. I did miss it in my first viewing too, but that shows the moment she begins to understand her own role in the situation. House is gone, family seem to have survived, then Mirabel is missing. Likely at that point she realizes that she cares more about Mirabel than about the miracle.

Hey Rissa, I just found you and I relate so much to your story. I lost my aunt and then my grandma within two years and both times I was sleep so It's been hard for me to sleep at night because I fear that I will lose someone else close to me. I enjoy your reactions to Encanto and its songs because most reactions to the songs are just generic or them just enjoying the Disney production, but watching you show emotions while reacting is refreshing. Thanks!

It always triggered me that Agustin puts the butterfly tile down upside-down. And I was today years old when I realized he is doing it because he's accident prone. He did it by accident! All these times, I saw him do it, but the 'why' never hit me.

well the hurricane wasn’t a prophecy but other things were - he wasn’t just going around randomly saying fishes would die and people would lose their hair, people asked what their future looked like. with pepa’s wedding day though he saw that she was nervous/sweating then commented, “it looks like rain,” because he’s awkward like that and she misinterpreted it and caused a hurricane

Hello Rissa, thank you for creating this. I was just watching a few reactions to the Under Pressure song because it really hit me hard when i was watching it with my kids - made me think of things i've gone through, and seeing my eldest daughter watch it was... beautiful and hard.
I just wanted to tell you that i appreciate the effort you've put in in making these videos. Your words moved me deeply, and i think you helped people through your wisdom and caring.
    Smiles to you! :)

I think part of the problem with Abuela is that like most she is used to this world being more or less transactional, and so as humans we are entirely unused to concept of Grace, let alone have any amount of trust or faith in it. When she received the Miracle she wrongly assumed that she had to earn the gift by her and her family tirelessly serving the community with their gifts, and her fear of them not living up to that prerequisite caused her to become controlling and inadvertently cruel at times. However, this assumption was-while understandable-incorrect, as I think that the truth was that the Miracle was a gift of Grace in response to Abuelo’s sacrifice, and the intent was simply for them to be safe and happy. There was never any need for them to earn the blessing, but as humans this whole concept can be counterintuitive. But as a result, all of Abuela’s efforts were working against and undermining the Miracle, as her controlling behavior was actually taking away any chance for happiness by making them feel perennially devalued. That was what was breaking Casita apart. So her hold had to be broken apart before the Miracle could possibly be set right and renewed, but this time within a different context and a new paradigm. Now they could live out every part of who they are with freedom, not constantly having to control their behavior to prevent the “unacceptable” or shadow sides of themselves to become visible. However, the shadow sides of our nature are not bad; they have simply been shunned, and thus starved of light. If allowed into the light of day every shunned aspect has the potential for a highly positive manifestation or gift, it just doesn’t have the opportunity to find it if it is continually kept hidden in darkness.
