I'm a snarky former Southern Baptist these days, but wow! This message really, really spoke volumes to my soul. I'm an ugly pool of tears, happy tears . Thank you for sharing your take on one of my favorite movies.

I really like the way you emphasize Mirabel as having this gift for teaching children, and I feel even further her gift of empathy makes her a wonderful unifier of the community.
As well, having been brought up in a Catholic family, I think the idea of “earning a miracle” is a representation of the way a lot of time in Catholic faith if you have received a blessing it is your responsibility to share it. That if you have been given a blessing and been found to have hoarded it in some way that is something you need to ask forgiveness for.
I had believed it was a version of that twisted by Abuela’s survivor’s guilt. And that being able to heal the emotional emotions wounds Abuela was still carrying was part of Mirabel’s gift of empathy.

I always felt that Mirabels gift is her love for others, which is shown throughout the movie.

I see Mirabel's father and uncle becoming part of the family even more interesting, because the ONLY last name mentioned is Madrigal... so it seems like they possibly took the last name instead. It really does fit with the gentiles being grafted in, I think.

The Algorithm knows that I've been watching a huge number of reactions to Encanto from a very diverse range of presenters, so when you showed up in my feed, I felt it only fair to hear your perspective. I totally agree that Mirabel is gifted from birth, in so many ways that are absolutely integral to the health of the family. Her openness, willingness to listen and probe people to be truthful, to make everyone feel seen. To me the entire movie revolves around seeing past ourselves to others, and appreciating them for being who they are.

*Spoilers if you haven't seen the movie!*
I think that's the great thing about the song at the end "a miracle is not some magic that you've got, the miracle is you. Not some gift, just you" and "I think it's time you learn, you're more than just your gift" it's recognizing the gifts that aren't just the magical ones, but the gifts of the person themselves and who they are as a whole person. And everyone comes together to rebuild the house, even the whole town. They all come together and use the gifts that they have to help a family who has helped them!

This culturally Jewish agnostic theater lover thanks you for bringing back the amazing interdenomonational discussions I used to have regularly. I have been discouraged lately by a growing resentment among many old friends of people with different ideas and in different circumstances. It's been a bit frightening. I enjoyed your take on the movie very much. I had a lot to ponder.

May I also recommend Pacencia Y Fe from Miranda's "In the Heights" sung by Abuela's singing voice. In the musical, she is the entire community's grandmother. It is a musical about the community of Washington Heights in NY. The musical has love and lessons.ruclips.net/video/KpWKROw83H4/видео.html

Gosh, I wish this movie and your commentary had been around when I was younger! I think I would have released a bit of that pressure that's spoken about to "earn" the miracle. I was always told "you're so gifted", but I always felt like I had to earn my gifts. (Of course that's the exact opposite of what a GIFT is!)

I have a very cynical view of organized religion for many reasons. I was ready to listen to this and get irritated or exasperated, but I didn't. I was pleasantly surprised with both the reasonable connections you made between the movie and your religious views, and with your inclusive and un-hateful nature. I am glad I stayed to watch. Thank you for reacting.

Me too. I'm blind, and I've had, though not entirely, a lot of experiences with religion and able ism and pity, and being looked down upon, so I'm always very conscious of it. Granted, I've had a few, usually with younger people, but not always, where I can actually talk to people about religion, and what's messy about it, and what we can learn from it, and the good parts about it, but, I'm still pretty cautious about anything religious.
However, just like you, I really enjoy this video! I'm really glad I clicked on it! I learned a lot from it too. I didn't pick up on the whole "my family is amazing, and I'm in my family, "thing. I mean, I think I did on a subconscious level, but now I have words for it! Awesome! I can relate to that a lot. I have trouble, especially with my family super belittling and over bearing and stuff, reminding myself that I do have special things, even if I haven't exactly managed to or figure out how do use them yet, at least for a job.
I also totally love your discussion of how we don't have to earn our gifts, and how, even though we should help our community, and give back, it's not something we should do out of obligation or too much of it. We need time for ourselves!
Anyway! I'm really excited for you to analyze the other songs. Could you do some of the key movie scenes to? Like, outside of the songs? Like, I think if you're going to talk about Bruno, it be a good idea for you to talk about the scene with him and Mirabel in his room. Also the confrontation between Mirabel and Alma is a great scene! I love the emotional complexity in this movie! It makes my brain go brrrr! 😀

Why were you going into this being negative in the first place?

    • @AliceI7764
      @AliceI7764 2 года назад +2

@@nevaxh I won't presume to answer your question for the poster, but there are a whole host of reasons for people to approach religion with skepticism and or guarded suspicion. Some of the most horrific things in human history happened in the name of some religion.
Someone who loved this movie and has so many feelings swirling after watching and absorbing the spectacle, the music, and the message may be curious how the film is viewed by a person of authoritative religious background. But by clicking on the link you are possibly opening yourself up to being gaslit while still buzzing with all the different feelings the film invoked in you.
There is skepticism and distrust among people in 2022 then there was six or seven years ago. Ever since about 2015 the discourse among people in this nation has become more and more divided and more and more like a powder keg just ready to explode.
I Think It's Perfectly Natural that anybody who is looking at a religious person's view of a popular thing in society or culture is going to look at that point of view with a grain of salt because of the nature of discourse in society today.
It's very similar to the way most people don't automatically believe politicians or lawyers or even nowadays doctors anymore.

The candle itself is very strongly a Christian symbol in South America. Disney stays away from religion unless it's directly part of the plot... to include kids of all religion, but this movie does have some serious catholic undertones.

Hey Jean-Daniel!! I'm your 147th subscriber, an atheist from Chile, on the other side of the continent. I was raised a Christian, in a catholic school and everything, and became cynical and ultimately walked away from faith at the age of 13. But I highly value and appreciate people like you, who are able to see beyond the Bible and praise values and recognizing the human being in all of us :)
I would gladly belong to your community, not to be evangelized, but to surround myself in people who see the good in others and transmit the peace, love and understanding that you clearly do, even through a screen on youtube :)
Keep doing what you do, you have an amazing gift yourself!! and if I ever find myself in Canada, I'd be honored to meet you in person :)

It's so hard to find open-minded, truly understanding and loving Christians... everyone has an agenda and it makes me sad. I'm hoping you'll analyze the other songs and maybe even talk about abuela's survivors guilt. How it affected her family. And how Mirabelle wasn't entirely right, either.

I'm slowly healing my anger and resentment towards the Christian religion (historically speaking). It's taken a long time and dedication to slowly unclich my hurt and actually be able to hear this perspective. And thankfully I was able to see how much there is in common with my faith versus looking for ways to be offended.
I love that you emphasize that
    WE DON'T EARN MIRACLES!

Thank you that this video exists cause I really had lost all respect in religious matters cause everything I saw downplayed something else for that religion. Just last week I saw a video someone made about the newest Disney movie “Turning Red” and stopped that after 20 seconds cause I couldn’t take any of what was said. Stuff like the devil is in everything and that this movie is full of it and other stuff in that direction and that he turned the movie off after 10 minutes because of it… because of something like this I can’t stand ‘religion’. Such tunnel thinking of just that one true thing is really wrong in my opinion.
So I am glad that this exists cause it shows that not everyone is a jerk about their religion, to put it that way. Really hope you could talk about Turning Red, cause a true insight with the religious side of it would be nice, not just a hate speech.😉

    Tengo algunas comidas reconfortantes:

I think there's something very dismissive about calling something people have worked hard on a gift. Mirabel has worked hard to build her skills. Isabela has not worked hard to learn about how to grow plants. She's spent who knows how long learning all of these amazing skills and dismissing it as her gift doesn't acknowledge that
Interesting how the church is one of the main ones abusing Luisa there is 0 reason to need to move the church.

It took me a bit to want to see your review. We have different belief systems, so I was hesitant to see a religious flourish on a story that I love so much.
Interestingly, a lot of the lessons you are mentioning, while Corinthians will never be my "go-to," work. I LOVE the way you express the beauty, the holiness involved in the magic of family and community.
But by 15:00 - in YOUR system of belief, you don't earn miracles. In my system of belief, it's a bit more complicated. Some are earned. Some are simply given, with the chance to earn it down the line. Some are just given, never to have a hope of being earned.
It might be heresy as far as your faith is concerned. It isn't, as far as mine is. But other than that... I like how you are approaching this, and I appreciate the lessons you are pointing out.
