- Talk’s Mike Graham is joined by former Metropolitan Police detective Peter Bleksley.
Mike and Peter discuss a new internal report from the Met that warns the force is “not fit to serve Londoners effectively” in its current state because of a recruitment crisis.
The Met said one-third of its officers will have less than four years of serve in the upcoming year, due to low pay, heavy workloads and dwindling application numbers.

Khan should not have been allowed to stand for mayor of London he should be removed with a no confident vote by the London assembly, failing that the prime minister should remove all mayoral positions, in my opinion.

Khan doesn't make the laws or have the knowledge to tell police how and where to patrol, he is just a useless figurehead. It's the professional senior ranks who are responsible and far too many of them are Common Purpose.

EXACTLY A couple of years ago here in NZ a guy was riding around my area for a few days on a bike randomly attacking people in cars with a big knife.Luclily most people locked themselves in.What amazed me was they wouldnt give a description ,meaning if you were out you would at least know who to watch out for?as we all know it's to protect certain people

@gavindouglas7020. Oh, it's not only black policewomen. A lot of modern day police officers are grossly overweight with big bellies, bottoms and an assortment of double chins. Some seem very near to pension age. And what about the scruffyness of a lot of them. Long hair and untrimmed beards? No, they are nothing like the police of my youth. They need to upt the wages to attract young, fit men and give them proper teaching. You can't try to save money on such an important role in the public's safety.

Met Police are polite and innocent as any other toddlers.we need hard and tough policemen to takle the youths in our society. The Police are more worried of whom they gonna offend if they open their mouth.

I joined the Met in 1971 and retired in 2001,what I describe as the golden years,we were a force that provided a service, we policed without fear of favour, then some clown decided we were a service that provided neither force nor service, we attended every call however trivial and we knew the villains on our patch ,and they knew us. The courts backed us up ,pay in the beginning was low but did improve , there was not constant media attention and over the years commissioners were employed for their lack of leadership and no backbone. But I suppose you get what you pay for
I had faith in police my whole life…then 9 years ago, the mal administration I suffered under at their hands had me stop in my tracks.

I don't really get this argument. Universities have first rate subsidised sports facilities and gyms and no end of martial arts clubs. Students are, on the whole, healthier and fitter than their non-university peers. If my local pub run is anything to go by, a good proportion of the men are seriously jacked. In theory they should make excellent officers but in practice there are probably far better careers out there.
The low pay matches their low standards .

Is there not some legislation, regulation or some operating principle for a person/people to sue the W(M)et Police for failing to deliver their service, which is in breach of a laid down standard? I certainly think the idea to legally challenge paying that part of one's council tax, which goes to the police, is quite reasonbly, inevitable.

In the last seven days alone theres been four or five stabbings...
Two in Enfield, One in Reading. The lady at the bus stop and one in east London that happened just this Sunday gone.
There are probably MORE cases that havent been reported.

I agree with that Peter, If the Police Refuse to do their Duty. (We my husband and I have experienced this behaviour from the Wilshire Police. For the last Ten years) We have thought Serious about paying for Private Police Protection. The police who are in Special Measures at the moment. Should be Removed.

The met isn’t a reflection of all the police forces. That being said in regards to recruitment and retention, why would you want to join or stay when they seemingly get hung out to dry by their bosses and CPS, unarmed and ill equipped to face the level of violence nowadays and bashed in the media. No thanks.
Recruitment numbers are not the be all and end all of the Mets ability to survive......the difference in recruits is a tangible aspect as well.
There used to be a massive spread of skills and experience joining up, you used to have younger people joining for a full career but also a huge amount of people joining for the right reasons who were older and had worked many jobs and had life skills that only time teaches...before that you used to have a large amount of very capable ex-military.
Now, the recruitment pool has been streamlined with the requirement for high level qualifications and you are not getting the people who used to be the backbone of the police ......" I never felt the need to use my diploma in expressive dance, in the middle of a pub fight at 5am " would sum that up

To apprehend one driver breaking the law, eight officers,andfour police vehicles, if you count the roaming police meat wagon? Yet youl be very lucky to see two police officers walking on the beat! If they're good and accountable to someone, I don't see the issue.
Police or PCSO's patrolling has become an incredibly rare sight.
I remember when I was a kid a man beat his wife to death with a table leg and then killed himself by walking in front of a train. This was the headline story in the London and national papers and reports continued for days. It would hardly be mentioned for days.
Merit is no longer neede in Police recruitment.

30 years in and retire with full pension and a lump sum - even up to to senior ranks where the fitness requirement is less important. Fully experienced senior rank? At peak of ability?
No problem - Ta-ra. How about paying a retainer at these senior levels to maintain experience and ability instead of letting go at peak performance?
So that doesnt say a lot for Sadiq Khan, or Chief of Met Mark Rowley.
Go to Manchester city centre and you will see the police everywhere, however in the districts outside you do not see them or can find them. Time has come where council tax should be held back until we all get the service we are paying for.

I really don't think "drinking" has much to do with the epidemic of gun and knife violence . Never see certain "demographics " drinking heavily . In fact , one of the "lost" London boroughs I visited last month had hardly any bars at all now -whereas it had scores of them up until a decade or so ago .
