You sometimes just get around to checking it after you've installed the latest modem and had to change an SSID etc.. and going over my usual settings I saw that it indeed showed public by default, but there wasn't a way to even change it so that made me somewhat uncomfortable. But this explained it all. I used to share files to my printer but i don't anymore. And even though i only use my one PC always at home as my desktop, i am now reassured at least that this indeed is the setting best suited to my situation for now. Just FYI: Typed in *WiFi Public or Private* and you came up as the very first result and glad i checked your post out cause it's simple but explains it so well.
