An excellent alternative to the OEM "ballistic felt" shield which always falls apart, and an even better improvement from the no longer sold "Jinke" splash shield from Ali Express.
This video review gets in depth with how it arrives, included hardware, how it compares with the Jinke shield, and then installation and feedback on accessibility with the trap doors.
An excellent aftermarket addition to your '13-'18 Ford Escape / Kuga!
NOTE: There is still no legitimate evidence to show that these aftermarket shields are insufficient in venting/cooling for your engine in comparison to the OEM with the curved scoop/air intake. So far, many drivers have seen no adverse cooling effects with the lack of the large air intake, but it does not mean that there is 100% confidence that this is a non-issue. Any feedback you may know of would be greatly appreciated!
I was able to install the shield with no problems, but I live in a condo so I can't change my own oil. The first time I took it for an oil change, I was worried that the guy would lose the screws form the doors. Also I had to tell him to just take the doors off that I marked with a white paint stick: OIL DOOR, OIL FILTER DOOR. I always go to the same oil change place but I'm not sure the sames guys will be servicing my escape. Thanks... Great job on the video. By the way... 2016 SE 2.0 Escape. 90,000 miles. First owner. NO ISSUES.
Yeah, I can imagine having somebody do your oil change and wanting to make sure they have the heads up on the fasteners! And good call with labeling the doors for them! Hah- great idea. Thanks for the excellent feedback, for checking out the channel, and I hope your Escape continues to be smooth sailing for you! Have a great Holiday week and Merry Christmas!
Sweet! My shield has been hanging down close to the ground for months now this is the perfect video for me!
Awesome!!! Thanks for the feedback and I hope it works out for you if you do get it!
Oil drain plug-oil filter-transmission fluid drain plug-they are all oil drain spots so it makes sense!
This was very interesting to see. I noticed yesterday that there was something hanging down under the front of my 2014 Escape. I had a look and it is the splash shield. I am taking it in to be repaired but I wanted to see what it was like. This was an excellent and informative video. Thank you.
Nice review. I had looked at the old one from Ali Express about a year ago but I never did order it. I might get one of these....looks like better quality.
Thanks for the feedback! Yeah- it is a bit stiffer AND a bit better made. Hardware provided is nicer too than the Ali Express one. Thanks for checking out the channel :)
Thanks for the video. Going to get one of these for my daughter’s Escape. The original one has been falling apart and falling down for over a year, and my temporary fixes just aren’t cutting it anymore.
No problem @Matthew, it feels like a good product- the only thing I'm not sure on is the scoop in the OEM shield- there are 2 vents in the front if the GZYF shield though and I think that they do have sufficient cooling just from my own experience with a shield like this for the past 3 years- no complaints on keeping things cool or things failing. Glad this video was helpful and thanks for checking out the channel :)
Hi , excellent video ! I noticed you did not have the rear splash guard on . Do you know if they sell that piece somewhere on the internet other than OEM ?
Have had the other one on the Escape for years. Would recommend either one for the DIY'ers in the group.
Thanks for the feedback, V&T!
Nice review! Looks like a good product. This cost on the link is now $222.00!
WOW...I need a cover as I bought my Escape used off lease from a good friend, low mileage, great shape, great lease payoff price. $222.00, I'm going to have to think about this. Maybe a lower priced unit will do the job? Any suggestions?
Do you have a video of step by step on installing these ? Or can send me the link to one ? I bought one on eBay a while back but I just didn’t understand the instructions
Do you have any insight on replacement screws/hardware for the existing splash shield? Long story short my splash shield is currently in my garage and I have NO hardware for it.... Ford dealership wasn't much help they wanted like $100 for replacements. I'd love to go to Home Depot and spend $10. Heck I'll even go fancy and get stainless if I can. I just have no idea what to get.
What happened did you get this fixed? My splash shield fell off and i lost the old hardware
Have you had any issues with heat from the turbo downpipe being so close to the plastic shield?
Hi Kailyn- good question. Not that I know of. This shield does not have the air duct of course but I have not noticed a drop in performance or any warnings or signs of issues. Its been on the car since posting this video. Hope this helps. We have a review video coming of the garage star shield that is not as high quality in terms of material thickness but it does have the air ducts for cooling
I just put this on, love it ..would like to know how u made out with the last oil change....
You know... it drains out the holes just fine but if there is any mess that drips sideways it can be tricky. The access points are generally good. The trans fluid drain location is great. However, I still needed to take it off to get to the leveling plug in the wheel well. Also, I have found that when my oil filter (1.6L) is too tight, I still also need to take it off to really get a good angle with my arm to get the needed torque. Overall, after a few years of ownership, I think the doors are less useful for servicing and more for inspecting for leaks and drips, and the material is still excellent and way better than the absorbing spongy factory material.
Would you sell the old one?
does it cause engine overheat in summers.air vents look to small.what is basic purpose of it . to avoid rust, stones and dirt in rainy season?why they are not so famous. why you have to order it all the way from china. locally not available.is there any custom duty.
Looks like this is no longer available, any suggestions for what currently is available? Thanks for the videos.
Hey there and thanks for the heads up on the item not being available- I did some searching and although I didn't find anywhere else selling it on Amazon, it does appear it's available on eBay- link here: www.ebay.com/itm/402476653430?chn=ps&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&amdata=enc%3A1rGtFJh6pSBmo0Tu5LmSNnA29&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&itemid=402476653430&targetid=1599090334777&device=c&mktype=&googleloc=9008421&poi=&campaignid=15275224983&mkgroupid=131097072938&rlsatarget=pla-1599090334777&abcId=9300697&merchantid=263817355&gclid=Cj0KCQiAxoiQBhCRARIsAPsvo-y-fal9lzuy5y75ehAXwYkvwv1E0qX30jvGzUAC-9ns1hbAxDLe5xgaAkdZEALw_wcB
Do you have a recent link to this splash shield? I can’t find it on Amazon
Hey there Raymond- thanks for asking. I just updated the link, but here it is! Give a shout if you have any issues please! amzn.to/3kZjh4M
I bought that new shield but notice the air dam is different than OEM as my Escape 13 2.0 has a Eco Turbo.... I was worried that could be an issue, so I patched the crappy OEM shield.... but I did like the fit/quality.... I might have to use if the shield gets a hit over the winter.
Hi @DG_Adams, you're correct- the curved duct is not present as it is for the OEM shield- I've yet to confirm anything official that it's fully necessary as the GZYF shield DOES have the two air vents in the front which direct air upward- however, I haven't actually had any issues with my 1.6L Eco and the Jinke shield compared in this video...
All of that being said, from what I've researched nobody has yet to confirm that the cooling is actually for the turbo- I did have a user post in one of the comments here that it's for the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) for vehicles equipped with AWD (Ford calls it 4WD with our Escapes)... but again, I have that on my 1.6L and I've not noticed any drop in performance with the Jinke shield and the same front vents as the GZYF shield.
I guess we should just keep eachother posted on what we find- it doesn't seem like there's any concrete evidence at this point of the loss of that curved duct being a real issue or not.
Wish I could be of more help here! Thanks for posting your thoughts and checking out the channel!
That air duct is in fact to cool the PTU. The PTUs in these vehicles are shrouded by exhaust, transmission and turbo all of which cause the PTU to run very hot and break down the mere 16 ounces of fluid they hold, causing wear and a high rate of failure for these units. You won't notice a difference in performance, but you may cause it to over heat and fail. Personally I would not install this new shield without an additional source of venting for the PTU (something I'm trying to devise now). Also, ptu fluid should be changed every 20-30k miles regardless of cooling.

Any concern over the lack of an air scoop on the passenger side? Some others have lamented this missing detail over the OEM piece with regards to aftermarket items like this. Thanks. Peace, John
Hi John,
A concern, yes, but only of the unknown really-
I have combed the forums and nobody has been able to come up with a direct confirmation (that I'm aware of) yet of what EXACTLY that air duct is cooling as it's just at the base of the engine bay and then diffuses the intake.
At this point in time, I've heard some people saying that 2.0L engines need the scoop to cool the turbo, but... so would the 1.6L... and I've been driving with my 1.6L Eco and the Ali Express aftermarket shield with similar features as this GZYF shield for the past 3 years with no issue. I also know people who have simply removed the shield altogether- we all seem to be getting along fine, with or without these shields in terms of that scoop being there or not, so as of now, I am going to say it's a non-issue until we have further information just based off of my own experience/ research.
That being said, I can't guarantee 100% that it's accurate, as it is indeed, ... just my experience and research... I haven't had the opportunity to phone up the Ford engineers and pick their brains, hah.
Good questions- please post back here if you have any further info- it would be great to know and great to share with everybody! Thanks for checking out the channel, John!
@@HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews it's there to cool the P.T.U. on AWD vehicles
@@icandoit20 hey @icandoit20, I'd love to know more about this- so the PTU is down low, correct? Is it the sole purpose of the duct? Not to be a pain here, but how can you be sure? I am asking because a lot of people have speculated, and I'm dying to know of somebody with evidence from Ford or with a link to something official to finally confirm the air duct's purpose. Any help here would be appreciated!
@@HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews I think fordtechmakuloco mentioned it in one of his videos. Yes it's located behind the transmission slightly on the passenger side.
Hola necesito uno para ford explorer 2013 donde lo puedo comprar
how do you replace the plastic nuts
Working on a video for that now! There are replacement parts on Amazon.
weight of it?
The front of the car has 3 bolts/fasteners and the rear 4. I don't know what front he is referring to. He has it backwards.
Hi @altrohlau1! Are you in a Kuga or an Escape? I know on my 2013 1.6L SE escape, I have 4 fasteners towards the front near the headlights, one smaller fastener at each side (just inside of each wheel at the metal clips) and the 3 more fasteners behind the oil pan towards the back of the car. Just put my shield back on a few days ago- I do know that the kuga and escape have some differences though too between North America and Europe which is why I asked
i lost the side clips, can i still use this without it?
Hi and sorry for the delay- you still can, but it may sag a little bit in the center and may chatter with wind going under the vehicle. Would be best to find a way to secure it if possible but its not * likely * going to fall off as long as the other fasteners are in place. Just my $0.02 - I'd find a way to secure it all the way around
@@HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews my guy oil guy did it without fasteners & sagging, AFAIK looks ok. Thxs
can I use it for 2.5 Engine?
Good question- I'll see if I can find out!
Is the Jinke shield the oem?
Hi Lenra, no it is not the OEM. It is an alternative to OEM and although it has access panels, it doesn't have the air scoop which can make some drivers nervous about cooling the turbo / PTU. I CAN say that I've used the Jinke shield and THEN the GZYF shield over the past 4 years which do not have the air scoop and have experienced 0 issues. I also have the wimpy 1.6L though, so perhaps the 2.0L turbo would need more cooling than mine. Hope this is helpful!
Its currently unavailable!
No video on how to install??
Install is the same as the regular shield :) just mount it with the hardware provided
and you need a splash shield why? Ford uses them because their vehicles may drip fluids from new, they prevent these fluids from staining your paved driveway. Otherwise they are completely useless and make fluid changes difficult. Just throw them away. Vehicles haven't used these for over 100 years. High end sports cars use underbody shielding but for aerodynamics. A Ford escape is not aerodynamic!
Thanks for the comment, Hazel- you're right- the Escape is not an aerodynamic race car, but the flat panel under the vehicle does help with some improved air flow for efficiency. Every bit helps these days with the MPG and EPA. I also agree that it has hidden a leak or two on our Escape, but this GZYF shield actually has holes perforated in it so that you do know if something is dripping through- I believe I noted this in this video. It sounds like you had a bad experience with your shield- sorry you had to go through that- they're not the best parts about these vehicles as it seems you've found. Thanks for posting.
@HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews a Ford escape is too high off the ground to have an aerodynamic benefit from a splash guard. A splash guard is to protect parts from debris on the road. It prevents small rocks, nails, water, or dust from directly reaching your engine, protecting it from the harsh conditions of the road. Remember there is a fan pulling air over the engine to cool it. That air blows out from the bottom mostly, creating a sort of air dam
Dude that sniffling is SUPPER ANNOYING!
hahahaha oh man.... I'm so sorry lol. I'll see what I can do about that- hahaha... thanks for the heads up
Ok, it may not be live yet, but I went back with the RUclips editor and sniffed out all the sniffs, haha... they shouldn't be there anymore. Thanks for the heads up!
@ronjames did not understand the assignment.
