    • @DJ.V-W
      @DJ.V-W 6 лет назад +67

      When I look back at 2008, 2 things come to mind that should have happened but didn't, the first is BMW Sauber threw away a golden opportunity to win the title (like you said) by stopping development of that car early to start on 2009 and I think you're right, with the way Kubica was driving that year, he would've been the one challenging, although Heidfeld was a match for him on pace I don't think he was as consistent. The second is the way Ferrari started to develop the car to help Massa out of his early season difficulties greatly hindered Raikkonen with that car, it would have been awesome to see Raikkonen and Kubica battling it out for the title. I don't want to take anything away from Massa by the way, he deserved the title over Hamilton that year after the way it went, but that's another story.

    • @kieranbennett7453
      @kieranbennett7453 6 лет назад +10

      єzαу its one of those moments everyone will look back on and wish it was different but hindsight is very much 20/20. If the 2009 car was good then it would be a different story, bmw could never know what would happen

    • @DJ.V-W
      @DJ.V-W 6 лет назад +31

      +Kieran Bennett
      That is true, but this is Formula 1, when you're presented with a opportunity to win a championship you take it with both hands, BMW were rightly criticised at the time for stopping development early because it was a strange decision to make when you're leading the championship. Whichever way you look at it they screwed up and then even more so because the 2009 car was such a dog.

    • @simonspeckmaier4309
      @simonspeckmaier4309 6 лет назад

      Does anybody know after what race they stopped development? I remind their strong pace in the America Races (Kanada and Indianapolis, where they were closly matched with Ferrari and McLaren). So it must be in the 1st half of the season.

    • @projectjt3149
      @projectjt3149 6 лет назад +4

      Got to say though, most of his highlight moments were partly because his tire's conditions were more advantageous than others. (Not just in the '08 Canada GP, but also in Singapore '10) Otherwise, he was stuck on midfield due to his car. And then there's Monaco 2010. That REALLY stood out.

    • @Chuyew
      @Chuyew 6 лет назад +6

      +Engineer 314
      You forgot about Australia 2010, Monaco 2008(where Kubica should win because he had perfect race but Hamilton had big luck there), Japan 2008(where BMW not developing car), Belgium 2010, Japan 2010 in quali with this Reanult and a few more.

    • @projectjt3149
      @projectjt3149 6 лет назад

      That was my point. TBH, I didn't see that much of Kubica's races. That comment I made was just from '08 Canada and Singapore. I guess that's one other thing that made Kubica so great. He knows how to manage his tires and get the most out of them to get to higher grid positions. But '10 Monaco is, arguably, his best highlight, seeing that you can't really fluke good qualifying times driving not so great cars.

    • @mgecko2959
      @mgecko2959 6 лет назад +9

      Yeah what kind of strings they should be pulling? You realise that they are just owning commercial side of F1 and they are responsible for showing events to wider public? They don't owe Williams, they don't have any power over them and they cant really do anything about Robert position within the team.
      Truth is that Robert is not great choice for Williams at this stage. Chances he will take them anywhere over 9th position in constructors are none existing and of course fans want to see him race but that would not help Williams at all. They are getting a lot of money from Sirotkin and Stroll sponsors for their seats and that's the kind of money that they wouldn't be able to make in positions even if they had Vettel and Hamilton at this stage.
      So regardless of how we fans feel they cant really afford to throw away tens of millions of euros and have no money to develop future car just to satisfy what fans want to see.

    • @Sokol_
      @Sokol_ 6 лет назад +5

      10 very fast consecutive laps to get enough time advantage to pit, change tires, refuel and continue racing. Imagine the difference of speed between two cars with different amout of fuel onboard - and different car weight - 10 laps of fuel was about 30 kilograms. That's why most of races in the past were won/lost in pits - sometimes it was faster to pit 3 times for quick refueling, sometimes it was faster to pit just once. It's not like 'modern' races where the only pit reason is changing tires and the time difference is no more than 2 second per lap before and after pitting. Back in 2008, it could be 4-5 seconds per lap.

      @@DJ.V-W BMW Sauber MAY have gotten Kubica a championship if they kept developing the car, but they went and developed the new car, which kind of ruined it for him, that and if he hadn't spun off in the UK, the stop-go in Singapore and crashed with Nakijima in Australia.
      They couldn't have won the WCC, of course, but that wasn't BMW's fault - rather, it was the Sauber aerodynamic capabilities that dragged it down... which, ironically, was the reason that BMW ditched Williams in the first place.

    Kubica's 2008 was quite a lot like Frentzen's 1999 when you think about it. Both of them were consistently good throughout, both managed to end up on the top step of the podium and both had outside chances of winning the championships, helped by Ferrari and McLaren throwing away lots of points. Such a shame BMW stopped developing the 2008 car mid-season, and an even bigger shame the 2009 car turned out to be an absolute dog.

    Great video! Amazing to see him come back from I’m such a horrific crash. A true professional.

    What kind of magic wizard engineering saved him there? It looks impossible to walk away from without any major injuries. It's mind-bending how that structure can dissipate this much energy and still leave the cocoon to hold the driver safely inside. Huge props for whoever designs these things

    why bmw decided to stop development on the 2008 car when your driver is leading the championship and you have a driver just as quick as lewis but with a much better level head is beyond me not like the 2009 car was any good then they buggerd off well done BMW executives

    I was there both years. After the crash in 2007 I wondered if I should leave and never attend an F1 race again as we thought that Robert had perished.
    Thank goodness smartphones were first out and my friend got the news he was OK. Seeing him comeback and win in 2008, with Polish fans waving their flags and crying with joy around us, was one of the coolest moments I’ve ever experienced with racing.
    Bravo Robert! A truly inspiring moment and chapter of F1 history.
