You know I think he is one of the few psychologists who is not a behaviorist who appeals to physicists and engineers. I am a humanist and an intuiter so go in for Jungian and social psychology rather than behavioral psychology even though I am a physicist and electrical engineer by degrees. What is it about him that appeals to scientists and engineers. I think it is that he relates to content, purpose, meaning, theory, statistics, and practicality. He stated that he is and relates as a pragmatist which appeals to the technically minded and to physicical scientists in general. His idea is what is, how it works, how u can use it, and what u need to watch out for. It is like a field guide book and how to use what u know version of psychology which appeals to scientifically minded men. Thoughts?
Another superb lecture from Dr Jordan Peterson, so informative and interesting. I hope these lectures from his Toronto University will remain on here for years to come, we are getting a top level psychology course gratis. We can all learn from this, whatever our age or background, it is such an important subject to understand. I love the way Dr Peterson packs so much information into each lecture, not a moment is wasted. It would be great to know what proportion of his students on these courses went on to major in psychology or undertake a PhD.
I'm someone who is high in neuroticism and have always been confused as to why my response to negative emotion seems to completely inhibit progress in my life. My take away from this lecture was that in those situations where I am aware negative emotions are taking over I need to condition a more exploratory/approach response in order to overcome the paralysis caused by the negative emotion. I don't know if there are good techniques to help with this but maybe if I can try to examine my "plan" in those situations and "explore" the world more broadly that will put me in a more appropriate frame of mind. I have been getting the sense lately that a lack of introspection has been a large part of my problems.
Decided to add that I played a sick child to health... even if people gave me thick books to read about child psychology. -because the child was getting better... i put the books aside. Giving the flower soil it loved to grow in. Then when the child could speak, took up the books about the dis-ease. And now my head and heart hurts. So If I chose again... i'd just rather study health... With the child I made lists of pro-active things to do... perhaps we should do this too...
The process of self talk, and immediately stopping myself from negative thoughts by going so far as to say stop has helped me so far. This gives me time to approach my feelings more logically about why I feel the way that I do and come up with strategies to minimize the negatively or at least make sure that it doesn't impact my actions and decision making. So far, so good on my end, but I'm a continuous work in process.
Love your work Dr. Peterson! Please continue! About that hypothalamic cat that went hyperexploratory... my first image was that it was busy looking for his or her misplaced brain!! And how cats hate to leave a kitten behind, or to be left out of anything. One day, when all humans truly appreciate all creatures and how much they teach us about ourselves, we will have the pleasure of the answer from the cat or collective cat - a personal theory waiting to be or not to be - himself or herself or "themself". Haha!! 🤔💓😅
How did they separated the different brain levels? Chemical or surgery. 'cause there's some area on the upper brain that are used to treat the 5 senses.
I have yet to see a video showing someone how to fix exceptionally high neuroticism. It seems to be the scarlett letter of the Big Five that affects almost all the important parts of life: career, emotions, relationships. Does one with high neuroticism have any hope? (That's rhetorical, there is ALWAYS hope, but would love to hear your thoughts on it Dr. Peterson).
My brother is no doubt high in neuroticism. He seems to compensate for it with his stronger traits, if you can't get rid of your flaws you might as well focus on what you're good at.
He says in a recent video to be conscientious basically. He says it's perhaps easier to control your circumstances than your response to bad circumstances.
This perfectly and wholly assimilates my idea of how some people do something so often they get stuck in just doing and forget what they're supposed to obtain as a result of action, they just do until they're 30 and if nobody obstructs them, they keep doing. I always despised and feared falling for such a trap when i was 7, cus it seemed everybody around me had fallen for it, from my parents to the characters in the kids movies i saw. I was scared my life could be just as abyssmally banal and mundane and even robotic, as if "I" am not even there, just my husk following a routine. Guess i would've escaped dostoevsky's paradise too if i were there, if such paradise were defined as following a learned incentivized path no longer leading to any consummatory reward, just doing over and over with no stopping... what a terrifyingly drab, 1-dimensional life. I'll try make another comment summarizing this entire lecture
