To get the cross hatch surely you need to set the drill clockwise then anticlockwise. Not sure if you did that? Did you have good compression and no oil burning after you started the bike?
I think it looks good according to the resources I’ve seen. There are some really good reference images via google search. I think it’s there. I’ve still got one trouble spot I need to revisit upon a closer look. I’m calling it a success.

How can you be sure you are not taking too much metal off?
You need to measure the cylinder to be make sure it is within the variances

I did not. It was still within range. Standard set.

Doesn’t the package the ball hone came in indicate the grit?
I don’t believe it did. The packaging is long gone. I got it from common motor collective if that helps.
I mean, the fineness of the abrasive, 180 or 120 or maybe there are finer ones?
Not 100% sure of the grit. It was bought specifically for this task.
Was the cylinder with the scoring the same one that the slightly damaged piston came out of?
