    In this video we show you the quick and easy way to hone or de-glaze the cylinders on your vintage Honda motorcycle engine. This process is only performed after measuring the amount of wear in each cylinder and determining if they are all within the service limits of wear for your respective engine. Service limits are published in each of the factory service manuals. If the cylinders are within service limits then honing and new rings are in order. If the cylinder is too large (out of limits) or you find a gouge or groove in the cylinder then it must be bored and an oversize piston used.
    The purpose of honing is to remove any glaze or build up on the cylinder walls so that the new piston rings have a clean and fresh surface to break-in to. The process is quick and easy, but it can be messy so prep appropriately. Regardless if you have a Honda CB350 / CB360 / CB450 / CB550 the same exact technique applies. Make sure you purchase the correct diameter hone for your respective bike.

    I used to use those cylinder hones you are using on valved brass instruments like trumpets and tubas when I cleaned them. After honing them that way I would use soft brass, cylinder shaped, brushes with dawn dish soap to finish the cleaning and smoothing out process. The brass brushes left a very smooth surface. Might be something to try on engine cylinders if you want them to be extra clean. We had a massive ultrasonic cleaner as well we used to get absolutely every bit of dirt and grease off the metal.

    Lots of people do not know that this is a really important step. It can make the difference between a good and a bad top end rebuild. Thanks for sharing this!

      this is a HUGE step. I learned the hard way a long time ago... had to go 'back in'; but only once. Anyway, when cleaning the cylinders after honing- I've always used diesel fuel instead of water. It's a great cleaner, no need to worry about rust and it's got some lubricity to it which I think works well on initial startup. Ride safe everybody.

    Great video as usual!! Would you have to hone your cylinders even if your not going to replace the rings?

    • @Common-motor
      @Common-motor  4 года назад

      I would always recommend honing to give your rings some fresh cylinder to grab onto when doing a top end.

      Don’t hone the cylinders if not replacing rings, not wise to tear the engine down that far and not replace the rings anyway

      180-220 depends on the cylinder wear.

    Flex ball hones are cheesy. Why don’t you use (and sell) a Lisle Rigid Hone?? Rigid hones will actually fix a wavy or out-of-round cylinder. A flex ball hone will not.

    Mate sorry I do not see any X pattern there. You are drilling too fast to obtain it.
