Just a little correction: Your speed shouldn’t necessarily halve going from one AP to another if they’re close by, but your PING WILL suffer. The best way to get around that is to connect your phone to your computer with USB, and then share the USB connection to the hotspot with ethernet from your computer TO your hotspot. That will give you the best ping possible but it will be shit compared to an actual wired cable/fiber connection.

I had a horrible experience with the T-Mobile mobile hotspot data service. When I first got it, I checked to see if it worked, and I was so happy that it did! It connected quickly, got onto 4G and I was able to access a website and it was quick! That's all I did in that moment. It was less than 5 minutes. Maybe even 2 minutes. I turned off the device, put it away in its box to save the data until I would actually need it. Some days later, I turned it back on, connected, but not even one website would load. All of the lights were on, indicating all was good. I checked the admin portal... and it was down to 2G! Seriously, I hadn't used the device at all for days and when I needed it most, it wouldn't work! I couldn't open even one web page. The salespeople at the T-Mobile store were just shamelessly trying to sell me something that doesn't work. It's impossible that in the 2 minutes I'd used it just to check that it worked that my data had gotten eaten up. Waste of money.

I have a home security system that has to be plugged in to a router. Do wireless routers have a part for these types of connections?

    • @MrWirelesscaller
      @MrWirelesscaller 4 месяца назад

There are several ways to do it but it's complicated.
What people did in the past was connect the old xbox by network wire to a computer's network wired port, the computer then connected to the wifi hotspot in the home. What you're essentially doing in this case is making it where computer is the router for the xbox while sharing it's wifi connection from the internet. Directions are similar but now with a twist of complexity.
Things you'll need are a computer (charging cable if laptop), network cable, a phone to be used as a router, and a USB A to whatever cable that the phone charges from (ie older apple lightning and newer USB C). Other things you can add to this is portable/travel router with a network switch ports if you want to connect more than one device to the phone's network.
What I think the cheapest way to do this is use an older computer with a network port you may have not being used currently, wipe the computer's operating system by doing a fresh install of windows (sorry I'm assuming you're a windows user). Get it setup but tell it to skip all internet connections for the moment. You can download window's install media for free from microsoft's website and you'll need at least an 8GB flash drive though I suggest might as well use a 32GB as they are more common and may even cost less.
Get the phone you want to use for the data connection, go through the setup by telling it as much as possible you don't want to connect to internet now and "skip" most of the setup steps possible, and when done you'll need to go through it's menu to set it up as "USB tethering" after connecting the phone to the computer.
This should now get the computer online, what you'll now need to do is go through microsoft's network sharing setup. This video will walk you through it though complicated it addresses what many don't which is that when the computer restarts or tries to hibernate it keeps the connection ongoing. ruclips.net/video/ivM7RaAA7zk/видео.html
You can add a portable/travel router which will connect from it's incoming wan port to the computer thus freeing up all the other ports for other connections and of course provide wifi too, you will need to go through it's setup to address this but you want to get one that "clones" the mac address this way it appears all things connected to it are the same item (if you clone a printer's port then it thinks all device's is the printer). This part is optional.

There are a few important things you should know: 1) Visible throttles the hotspot to 5Mb which is plenty fast for HD streams but like all cell providers, they 2) limit streams to 480p which isn't the greatest quality on a TV larger than 26in, and 3) like all MVNOs, your speeds can be painfully slow during primetime tower usage because Verizon premium customers get priority.. If you live in a 5g area and you have a 5g device, that does not affect you. For the 5Mb hotspot throttle and 480p stream limitation, I have an easy solution. Get a GL-iNet N300 router so that you can configure the firewall to set the TTL value to 65 to bypass the 5Mb throttle. This model also contains VPN software at the router level to hide your connection to the streaming service providers such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Disney+, youtube, etc. If you are using a Windows laptop, Android TV, or any android device with root, you can use any router because these devices can easily change the TTL value so that by the time packets reach the Visible server, they are 64. Unfortunately Roku devices and smart TVs do not allow you to configure the TTL so you are limited to 5Mb speed. Also, smart TVs and Roku devices do not allow setting up a VPN so the TV / Roku device can never avoid the 480p stream limitation. The GL-iNet N300 is perfect for any 4g/5g cellular provider, not just Visible.

@@tinosmo1 Ping is latency, or the amount of time it takes for a packet of data to go from your device to the server, and then back. It is measured in milliseconds. The higher the ping, the more lag you will notice in online gaming. Ping doesn't really affect web browsing or watching videos, but things like video/voice chats and online gaming can be negatively affected with high ping times. The amount of ping you have depends on many factors, like the connection between your PS4 and the hotspot device, the hotspot's connection to the carrier, the server you are connecting to and any of the connections in between your console and the server.

Games like Rocket League and Call of Duty were laggy and I had high ping. Even with speedtest testing my LTE connection at 50mbps down. As others said here, ping is latency. The lower number the better. For things like casual internet browsing, social media, online school etc, this is a great inexpensive option.

The only disadvantage is ending up with a corded phone, when you want to use the phone to make calls (no biggie). Of course, you could always discount it from the router. My sister is currently using this set up with a mobile router connected to and android Visible phone. But her android phone automatically disconnects and stops charging after about two days of being plugged into the electrical outlet. If you’re going to use this as a home Internet replacement, I’m wondering if anyone has used and electrical plug timer (those timer to use for Christmas lights to turn on and off at certain parts of the day). If so, does this fake the phone out into thinking that it has been unplugged and then plug back in Daily?

cant you just put the sim into the lte router and then that eliminates an entire stall or gate it has to go through? just get a plan, put the sim in the lte router, go to the ttl and put in the correct number for the phone its supposed to be in, and then youre running wifi straight from the router to your laptop rather than phone to router to laptop....

Is there a reason why one would have to use one of your recommended routers? I would guess it just has to be a wireless router, or is there something special about the ones you recommend?

You could use any router that supports USB tethering.
I usually recommend anything that has Openwrt so you can further modify it.
You pick up a Gl.inet router for $20 and share it to a cheap router that you already potentially have.
You would USB tether to the gl.inet router, and share the internet to the other router via Ethernet.
The good thing about the Gl.inet routers you can modify the TTL to bypass the limit to most cell phone plans, such as Verizon and T-Mobile.

A big question my phone company only gives me 15 gb of hotspots per month, does the router helps not to spend all the 15 gb in and day? For example to watch a movie it takes 2 to 3 gb of data.
