We've used this for the preacher's laptop on the lectern to trick the laptop running PowerPoint into thinking it was hooked up to a second monitor. The preacher then sees the "presenter" view. I learned this trick from AJay years ago!
Wow, interesting. I use that thing for my virtual machines on proxmox with gpu passthrough. If no monitor is connected, u dont get hardware accelerated remote desktop with right resolution. Thought thats the only relevance of this hardware😄👏👍
Thanks much. For your church work also. I finally have a better idea what this used for. Never knew it was a problem but if I need it, I know where to go. Im a tech guy, so its something in my arsenal of utilities and gadgets that I may find a use for. Have you ever thought about creating a tutorial series? Like along the lines of: Have you ever used but it needed two monitors and you only had one. Here is a solution for that issue that also comes up in other types of video software. Not only the church crowd could find this useful, as other kinds of media creators would find this problem solving. Thanx for bringing this to my attention. Good information.
Creative use of HDMI/DisplayPort dummy plugs, thanks for the idea! Note your device(s) MUST have enough physical display outputs for this to work. If so, this can be really helpful (as shown).

Hi Ajay, Thank you for your content-it’s always so practical and informative! Recently, I came across a new HDMI 2.1 Dummy Plug that claims to support 4K at 120Hz. However, since we don’t currently have the equipment to test 4K@120Hz, I’m curious to know if it truly supports 120Hz as advertised. As an experienced tech reviewer, your evaluation would be incredibly insightful. Would you be able to test this product if you have the necessary setup? Your feedback would be a huge help in deciding whether we should invest in such equipment. Thank you so much for your time, and I look forward to hearing back from you! Best regards, Mike
I had to use one of these on my home PC to allow me to remote access it when at work. Without it , when my home PC's physical monitor was off and I tried remoting the PC from work, it would only show a black screen, as the remote software's host agent thought I had no monitors attached. Adding the header and setting the monitor setup to mirror the main physical monitor, when I remote the PC it thinks there is still a monitor on and allows me to see the screen. Sounds silly, but it worked.
Hi Ajay, thanks for all your helpful content. We’re running EasyWorship from a PC on our platform (not on sound booth… it’s a long story 😉). That PC has an Nvidia card with 3 outputs. Of course, the operator needs one of the outs. Would plugging in two of these allow me to send the EZW main and alternate displays via NDI (with NDI tools installed) to a second PC (in the sound booth, also running NDI tools) to feed our switcher there?
very nice but i can intrigue you to try to make an hdmi box that can connect with 2-3 hdmi of yours with out cable and use it like the normal hdmi change box pc now that will be very nice
I just saw your video on these and had a question. I digital decorate for the holidays. Meaning i put 3 different TV's in different windows ( 1 upstairs and 2 downstairs ) i hook up a media player to each one currently and have my clips/effects on USB sticks. So i use an HDMI cable from the media player to the TV then plug the USB stick into the media player. I run 3 different " shows " ( 1 on each TV ). Would these things be of any use in this situation? Like instead of having 3 media players and me having to to to each one to start them up, would there be a way ( would i need a HDMI splitter or something ) that i could use these and plug one into each TV and then only use 1 media player or HDMI splitter to start all 3 shows from say a laptop? Im not super techy but when i saw your video it got me thinking it might be something useful for me to run all 3 shows from 1 laptop rather than having to go around to each TV
I noticed that your side-by-side camera setup is following you around as you walk. Is that an iPhone-Mac Camera Continuity setup? Or are you using some sort of DockKit accessory that tilts and rotates and follow you around
Question.... we don't have a physical connection at our lectern....running obsin back a/v booth (75 feet away). For visiting pastors, can we use this? Would it require 2 (one on visiting pastors laptop and one on back obs mac?) If yes, How far can these be apart? If too far, could we use one on back tvs and one on visiting pastors laptop? Sorry, I see you only plugged into one device so wondering how this works for visiting pastors.... pls advise! Thank you for this post!!!
These are not wireless transmitters so distance isn't a concern. This is only meant for when you cannot connect multiple monitors but your software requires multiple monitors.
I noticed that you used a WinPC with this setup. Will the headless HDMI work with MacOS, too? **I heard my answer. Patience is a virtue for the viewer. 🤣
Wow AJay .. this video device comes the perfect time.. this solve the first part of my worries. So here is the second part of my worries. Ok using the method and device describe in the video.. I want to place each 1 participant in the zoom meeting as an individual. I know that I can use ninja obs which automatically assign an individual to it own window and the individual has it only mic audio... I want to accomplish this request still within zoom meeting. And I do not have to crop the individual if I am using the headless hdmi connection. . Perhaps as the individual join the meeting.. it automatically assigns its own box with own audio ???? Umm J.A.T (just a taught)
This will not work for the ATEM as the ATEM will see it as a monitor but it won't output that "fake" monitor anywhere since the atem doesn't have software to utilize it.
im so confused as to what this does still LOL. I understand it gives you a fake monitor but not sure how or why still LOL. hard for my old mind to comprehend. Guess I need to buy one and play with it.
No it does not. It tricks your computer into thinking it has another monitor connected. This works for software programs that need 2 monitors but you don't actually have 2 physical monitors
Dont get what extra have you achieved with this. Even without this, you can capture multiple windows on a single computer using OBS and stream it or record it. For example you can connect your webcam, your powerpoint, your other cameras and assign hot keys to change or cut between scenes and you can stream it or do virtual camera output to another software. So what additional benefit this dummy hdmi plug gives you, when the same can be achieved even without it
You cannot do that if you need your main monitor to run presentation software like presented because it needs a physical monitor for the audience display.
The computer would need a second output which is connected to the monitors directly or through a splitter. At Shiloh the PC os connected to a monitor, hdmi splitter (for tvs) and then the headless adapter. Monitor is for the team, tvs for the sanctuary and headless for presenter. OBS is set to output to the TVs and OBS captures the headless for the presenter feed that is captured in OBS like in the video to present to the OBS output which projects to the TVs and online
It's rare that you run into use cases for these things, unless you're doing some very power user-y thing that requires tricking Windows into thinking it has a second monitor attached, or as in one example he gave sometimes you might be running a server without a monitor attached to it but windows will need to think that it has one attached to fully boot, in which case tricking it with one of these would allow it to boot up enough to where you can remote desktop into it and admin it. Again very rare that you'll find a use case, but when you do, these are perfect
Good topic, presentation "on the fly" not your strong point. Lots of redundancy, back-tracking and wandering around topic. Try actually writing an outline or script and a trial run presentation before hitting record.

I use it tied to a laptop with a low resolution screen, to be able to use remote desktop in Full HD through the virtual monitor. Very useful.
Yeah it helps with Chrome remote desktop as well the same way

Yes, although depending on what you're doing, a USB based adapter might be sufficient.
Nice. I don’t have a need for this. It just popped up. But I like it and your presentation

i use a 4K dummy plug for use with a pair of Xreal glasses & a m1macmini... works a charm, to get a 4k display in the Xreal glasses

Glad to hear that!
Headless HDMI mostly used by Mining Server that want to trick server for their VGA Card but this is also a cool trick..
They also work well for HDMI switches that prevents Windows from disconnecting external TV’s when they are off.
The guy with (at least) 6 monitors (in view) still (buys &) reviews a headless hdmi adapter for extra displays 😂👍
The adapter review was for the community and a client 🙂

I'll see what 8 can do but I myself so not have a 120hz display to properly test so it may be simulated

That is the Meta app that can control the ATEM

Interesting but my question is, doesn't already Windows 10,11 come with a virtual desktop where you can do just that without buying that HDMI adapter?

Pretty sure OBS has a screen emulator just for that.
Currently it doesn't. Maybe a plug-in but I have not found one to do this yet
