    Those U-shaped valleys around Mt Cook were carved out by the giant glaciers of the last ice age that started around 75k years ago and lasted until about 14k years ago. All the bolders and rocks in and around the valleys are what was ground out of the mountains by the glaciers and dumped as they retreated.

    Another hint for showering while on the road is to go to swimming pools. Usually around $5 to $6 per person for a lovely swim and then a long hot shower! We have a fully self contained motorhome so I really don't know how you guys cope in a car. The law here is changing soon with regard to the self containment requirements. I wonder how that will affect places like that stunning Lake Pukaki freedom camp where most of the vehicles will be non-compliant. ps... it's Aoraki/Mount Cook, not just Mount Cook. Happy travels, I'm enjoying your videos as we are back down that way in a couple of months.

    An interesting fact about Aoraki Mt Cook is that you can only legally live there for a limited amount of time as a worker - you can't set up permanent home there. This is to keep the environment pristine and not over commercialised, but more importantly, that it is such a sacred place to the Mana Whenua (the people of the land). I love that this was put in place so early, before excessive and intensive tourism (not your kind!) had a chance to spoil it ❤

    What's impressive about Aoraki is its base is near sea level on the west coast, meaning it is from Everest base nearly the same. The Andes are more impressive from the west.

    • @trudimclaren4301
      @trudimclaren4301 5 месяцев назад

      Agreed! Thank you for mentioning that! Also, the constant erosion by the weather from the West Coast is offset by the fact that the Southern Alps are still being created by the fault line pushing them up (I think last I read, the expected the growth rate to exceed the erosion rate)!

    Hi guys. Another great vid and I’m so glad you’re getting to see our beautiful country, more so probably than 90% of NZers, myself included. I just have an observation for Glen; from being a relatively inexperienced driver on arriving here, with the amount and type of driving you’re getting in NZ, it is making you a very good driver with focus on situational awareness and this will prove to be invaluable for the rest of your life. All the best and enjoy guys. :-)

I can personally attest to global warming 😢 And the glaciers formed the valleys (but you're right also, Mado - earthquakes and continental shift contributed as well)

    The amazing colour of the water in the rivers and lakes comes from rock flour, which is from all the rocks and stones within the glaciers that rub and grind against each other over thousands of years. When the lakes recede during drought, you can see it deposited as an incredibly fine powder on the shoreline.
