The war crimes he was accused of amounted to attempting to foment discontent amongst the occupied provinces of the Soviet Union by treating them kindly and providing food and other supplies to help them survive. An interesting perversion of a 'war crime' if ever there was one. A deeply religious man, he died far from home, comforted by his faith and the knowledge that he was a far better man than his captors.

Being kind and friendly towards civilians was a worst crime in USSR. Punishment was a death penalty

Strange ending. Left things in mid air and did not even mention the end of the war or what happened to Kleist. Here is what Wiki says:
Kleist was arrested in late April 1945 in Bavaria by United States' troops, and handed over to the British Army. In September 1946 he was extradited to Yugoslavia, where after a trial he was sentenced to fifteen years in prison for war crimes.
In 1948 he was extradited to the Soviet Union, where he was charged with war crimes[17][18] After a trial he was sentenced to 25 years in prison.[19]
On 13 November 1954 Kleist died of heart failure in Vladimir Central Prison. He was the most senior ranking soldier among the German prisoners of war in the Soviet Union to die in Russian captivity

That's not what you are seeing. He's wearing the WW2 "Wiederholungs spange" over the WW1 Iron cross ribbon as per German uniform regs dictate, as well as the WW2 Iron Cross 1st class Wiederholungs spange. Interestingly v.Kleist must have rubbed a lot of people wrong...because he was captured by US Troops, handed over to the Brits, then tried by the Yugos, and imprisoned by the Russians where he was the highest ranking German Officer to die in Captivity in a time where most if not all German POWs had been released.

Why does the narrative end before the story of this man really ends? It was the same with the story on Manstein. By the way, this doesn't sound like a german accent to me, some words are properly pronounced and some are not. For the record, what sounds like a misstatement: The Reichswehr didn't get integrated into the Wehrmacht, it was simply renamed in 1935 when the existence of the Luftwaffe as a part of it was acknowledged.

he was captured by u.s. forces, handed over to the british and they actually handed over to jugoslavia. he was found guilty of war crimes but he eventually got to soviet hands after they asked for him. he died in soviet captivity in 1954. also his death is pretty blurry, some sais that he was used to try poison on him, causing his death. he was one of the last royal prussians alive back then... why they handed him to the soviets?? why?? @@user-hd4fm8qq9u i do have a theory, the brits had a lot of demads for a lot of generals (the 'muricans wanted so much von Rundstedt) so in order to let some pressure off they decided to let go him instead. (Also von Kleist was active in the est more then the West so the brits followed the logic of let go of the "least interesting" rather than others) i will never forgive them, such a noble man in the hands of the soviets...☹️

Von Kleist was from quite an intellectual family, and tho' a German general officer educated at military schools from quite young, he was very humane too. Typical German military education did not produce notably humane officers.
After WWII, the Russians asked to have him returned to them as a prisoner. They then tried him on war crimes. What do imagine was his crime? He had 'alienated thru mildness and kindness the population' of the Soviet Union. He died in captivity.
He was known to have anti-Nazi views and a relative of his was executed for planning to kill Hitler. Decades before Ewald was born, two members of his family were literary men and one of those was also a German commander.
Christian Theologist Dietrich Bonhoeffer was married to a Kleist family member too. Quite a remarkable family, the Kleists. Google the Kleist family.

Educated German officers like Von Kleist and Senger und Etterlin were not tainted by Nazi ideology and represent the best of the German military tradition. Tough, adaptive, intelligent, confident but never overbearing, respectful of their men and humane toward their foes.
