So you’re saying it’s not impossible for a multimillionaire on a show with a 9 figure budget to secure stuff like beans and rice? Mind blowing.
To be fair, whether it's a 9 figure budge or a 5 figure budget, they still almost certainly rely on local caters. That's a big part of tax incentives. And it's possible the plant-based options from those local caters just sucked. I can relate. On a shoot in Kefalonia, Greece, I had a very hard time sticking vegan. I pulled it off, but it was tough.
@@karmicbreathCome on, man.
He could have paid a personal chef 50,000 euro and be done with it.
That was a huge amount of money for a Croatian back then and peanuts for him.
@@m.g.3913 look I agree with you. At the same time, I make no assumptions. Maybe it wasn't peanuts for him. It's quite common for actors to have steep money problems. Who knows how well he was handling his wealth. I know it's not excuse. The bigger question around his sincerity is how he didn't return to veganism when he got home.
Came onto the comments to make this exact point. He was probably one of the highest paid actors in GOT and he found it hard to find vegan food with cash like that? No way sorry. The set people would have surely known he was vegan too (and by the looks of it loads of others were vegan too) and brought food for them. It really is just an excuse, I'd have more respect for him if he had just said I slipped up around everyone eating meat which is probably more understandable sadly.
@@karmicbreath Did you watch the video? The whole point is that others on set were doing it.
Where there's a will, there's a way.
Peter Dinklage is the winner of the Cosmic Septic aka Alex O Colon POO award of 2024
💀
Alex still believes in animal rights though. In his latest video he argued that what we do to animals is horrific.
@@Nayr747 Nice lip service, sounds like. Even throughout his short run as a 'vegan', he argued multiple times that the issue is "suffering" and how animals are treated. That's more of a welfarist take than a vegan one. "Well, if they don't suffer..."
@@HiddenStr3ngth As a philosopher I would be surprised if his understanding of the issue was that limited.
What a tragic lie Peter gave. Lives are on the line and I'm glad you point out Peter's horrific lie.
Very disappointing for an actor with a huge platform to spread misinformation about veganism. I wish he had just said he missed eating meat and didn't want to be vegan anymore.
Also, the plantains, beans, rice, and salsa at the end of the video look delicious! 😋
we miss you dr. bear! hope to see you soon!
We all knew it was an extremely weak excuse from Peter as usual when predominantly plant based people loosely call themselves Vegan. Hopefully a few of those actors actually do uphold Vegan values towards fellow animals, even when its slightly inconvenient.🌱🌅🍀
I think your response is quite reasonable and valid. Regardless of other actors being vegan or vegetarian (though indeed that bolsters your point of view) surely Peter Dinklage could have taken a smaller step away from a vegan diet to include eggs and cheese? Beans too are probably not unheard of there but nuts and whole grains must have been there. He could have simply said that despite his belief in vegan ideas he couldn't be satisfied with a limited vegetarian diet, that he missed fish and chicken, that the work was emotionally draining and the added stress of missing say tofu and mock meat substitutes or whatever he was used to became too much at that point. On returning he could have resumed a fully plant based diet.
Like I said, he only claimed to be meatless as he identified as vegetarian even in his PETA ads, which is why it’s even less plausible that his needs couldn’t be met. I also shared the news that he had been given tofu and other mock meats in the scenes where he’s shown eating “meat,” which makes his statement about GOT being at fault more puzzling.
@@HappyHealthyVegan Thank you for clarifying.
That last part made me laugh so hard I almost choked on my food lol. Love hearing your videos over the years you are always very civil when you speak and it's clear you have philosophical training with how well you phrase your points. Those people who have a problem with what you say are using toxic positivity and do not want to debate so they have to put you down instead of thinking critically.
Game of thrones was shot in Croatia over a decade ago so he might been eating animals for a long time
Weak minded people always make excuses!
The comments from triggerer non vegans 😂❤
👍 Whole food plant based for the environment and health; vegan for the victims!
*Ask your city government to sign the Plant Based Treaty!* 🖖
What’s good my fellow vegans
@@renejuarez1206 had a really good steak last night, pan seared it and basted it with butter, so good
I think it is very telling that Peter didn't return to his 'veganism' even when he left Croatia. Can he no longer find cruelty-free food anywhere?
(Still love him as an actor; he is very talented!)
It's ironic that Jerome Flynn's character spent so much time with Peter Dinklage's in the show. Why didn't he ask for his help?
Thank you Ryan, well said!
Story that keeps giving you more!
Fuck it, here's a guide by me, a 12 years vegan croatian, on how to eat vegan in Croatian restaurants:
riža - rice (just ask if it's without "maslac" bc sometimes they add butter to it)
pizza (get a vegetable pizza without cheese and you are usually good to go; dough rarely contains eggs)
prženo povrce - grilled vegetables
blitva - a type of spinach (it's sooooooooo good with rice)
raštika - a tougher type of spinach
bečarac - sometimes contains meat, ask if they have a "pozna" version
pomfrit - french fries
gljive s roštilja - mushrooms of the grill
usually all sides ("prilog/prilozi") tend to be vegan, there's definitely more I just can't think of right now
they care very much about religion and fasting, so if you don't like any of those things, restaurants will probably be open to cooking something of menu for you if you are nice and mention that as a reason
for taste:
croatia uses very little seasoning or rather, croatians tend to season everything with Vegeta and maybe some white wine.
you can tho, ask for Avjar! A bellpepper-eggplant dip, which is always vegan
Things you generally can't eat, even though you feel like, those things should be vegan:
Pasta
(and some bakeries add milk to ALL breads, just ask)
Phrases you might need in restaurants:
Postim, ... = I'm fasting, ... (fasting here usually involves ALL animal products so it's a good phrase to be safe.)
Dali XXX sadrži jaja/mljeka/maslaca? = Does XXX contain eggs/milk/butter?
Dali mogu dobit XXX bez jaja/mljeka/maslaca? = Can I get XXX without eggs/milk/butter
quick shopping for on the road:
Fruit and Vegetables are incredible here, just get those
Don't expect hummus to be a thing but you can get Avjar ANYWHERE
you can also just put marmelade on your bread idk
at this point you can get soy milk and rice milk anywhere, but it tends to cost 4x more than cows milk so don't buy milk on a quick emergency trip to a tiny grocery store, get your milk in a BIG Konzum, Billa, Merkator, Lidl, ... - if the store is small, just don't do it
nuts, seeds, peanuts
Sure, I've been to one wedding where they didn't have any options for me so i stayed hungry until roughly midnight when they got the fruit platter out but otherwise? Never been a problem finding food.
And with his budget and vegan surroundings, he is just lying about his reasons
Hi Ryan and Anji, I hope you are well.
It depends on the dedication of the person because if I weren't dedicated to my diet and Veganism I would be eating meat in this small town I live in, in Mexico. My co-worker from Scotland was a Vegan for 9 years and recently stopped being Vegan after moving here for about two years. He even did his thesis on Veganism in college. Some places it's hard to remain Vegan.
Just get rice and beans and corn. Add fruit and veggies. Super easy.
I agree dedication is most of it. If one isn't committed to a cause, they're almost always going to take the easier route and put their own desires first. I guess it's fair to assume seeing animals as individuals with inherent value and a will to live wasn't very engrained for Peter, or something he thought about regularly.
Your friend was invested 'enough' while living in the environment he was used to, but finding himself in a setting that wasn't up to his usual level of comfort, he seemingly felt convenience outweighing his supposed principles. Am I understanding correctly that, in you, he even had an example present of it being absolutely manageable? He could've probably even asked you for advice?
Peter Dinklage coworkers may have been vegan or vegetarian but what does that have to do with him?
Everyone is different right? Everyone has struggles, insecurities, and problems. Unless you’re in his inner circle or you’re his partner you’ll just keep on guessing why he did what he did.
hi graven. indeed peter's personal life and struggles are his and his only, and we have no right to force him to give up his privacy. all I am saying is that his claim of it being impossible to be vegetarian in Croatia should be met with skepticism. other than that, I have no problems with Peter!
But there's no way to eat vegan in X country
I agree with you but please keep in mind that GOT was aired in 2011 so probably they started filming in 2010. Why I write this? Because you show vegan places now in 2024 and it was definitely different 14 years ago. Just that one argument to reconsider in the future.

I think you're comparing him to younger stronger actors. Yes his excuse was flimsy, but I think he was having other problems and animal protein helped him. We're all different, we can't know how he felt physically. I know the position paper you often site says a plant based diet is adequate for everyone, but maybe he needed something different than "adequate."
There's no such thing as protein deficiency in the western world. Animal protein is not superior to plant protein.
"Adequate" just means it at minimum meets a certain threshold. That doesn't imply that it isn't also the maximum. That same paper says a vegan diet may confer health benefits. Several studies show people who eat the least amount of meat live the longest. He probably wasn't actually lacking anything but willpower and a conscience.
"Animal protein" doesn't have anything magical or special about it, as science and practical experience have shown countless times.
@@Nayr747 well said I agree :)
@@Nayr747I didn't hear Peter say anything about his long term health. I'm thinking plant based wasn't working at the time for whatever reason and he used animal protein to get through. I've been there myself so I can understand.
