- Cover of U2's "Bad." Part A1 of updated guitar tutorial. Tone based on the live version from Wide Awake in America. Recorded with Fractal Audio's Axe-Fx Ultra (delays and reverb), Tech 21 Liverpool (amp modeling pedal) and Psionic Audio's Triad (Korg SDD3000 preamp pedal). Guitar: Fender Custom Shop 1960 Strat with Kinman Woodstock pickups. My timing is slightly off in a couple spots. See www.u2guitartutorials.com for more information.
Great cover, God Bless you man for all your clear tutorials - one of the most definitive on the tube! Rock on brother! 🇮🇪🔥🙌
Thank you Michael for your dedication with these tutorial videos and running the forum. I hope we see you be active again.
It might be. I was just going for the tone from Wide Awake in America. I always use 0.11s on my Strats and Teles. More chime with 0.11s than 0.10s. I use Ernie Balls.
@JazzInc:
I like it's one. Something subtle it does that Axe doesn't. It's all analog vs. the Axe's digital model. But I've now improved my Axe model by comparing it to the Liverpool.
Isn't this actually from Rattle and Hum? In any case--as usual--well done rendition. You always inspire me to pick up my git after watching your videos. Quick question, what gauge strings do you use? Thanks!
Regular for sure. The other set has a bridge pup that is a little too hot. You want the middle and bridge pup to be matched for best quack tone.
@bonovox70:
Ernie Balls are great. I just like the slightly smoother wounds on the Roto's.
Michael: today was my first attempt to play Bad with a backing track! All of this is thanks to your video lessons. I cannot thank you enough for the time you have taken to make these videos. Your videos (and your humility, quite frankly) have morivated me to get back to playing guitar and pushing my own boundaries. It’s a process, but I am getting better every day!
I am currently playing “Bad” through a DD20 Giga Delay and Liverpool pedal into my Line 6 amp (clean RED). It’s not an AxeFX, but it is S W E E T music to my ears. I will likely upgrade to a Line 6 POD 500. That said, I would have never imagined playing guitar like The Edge (thanks to you!), so who knows? Maybe an Axe FX will be in my future!!
May the new year bless you and your family with health and happiness! Please know you have made a very positive difference in my life. For that, I am most appreciative - and I thank you kindly. -Peter
Peter, thank you for the kind words! It's so rewarding to hear that my videos continue to be helpful. I don't have as much free time to play, but I'll be back someday because of people like you! Keep practicing. It will all pay off. It did for me.
forget the hair speed guys of the eighties .... edge made all of this beautiful music with just a limited number of notes
hey Michael did you know that this cover is posted in the Psionic Audio website as a example of their products?? is under the LISTEN tab. pretty cool!!! check it out.
Hey Michael, I have fender '69 customs in middle and neck (5,8K) and the Dimarzio FS1 in bridge (160mv). Do you think the bridge is too hot for quack? Don't like the tone and search for something else. Grtzzz
One question: how to use the triad with the Axe Fx? the send - return or imput? Using the Axe Fx plugged into a power Bogiee Mesa 20/20, where it enters the triad?
@JazzInc:
Yes, we moved on Thursday to Google Groups.
Ha!! How do you know Litfiba.?
what kind of guitar?
I tried the FS-1 once. Too hot for most songs, although others have used it successfully. It's more about overdriving your amp with a preamp like and SDD-3000 clone. I suggest a regular set of Kinman Woodstocks (regular set). They have a little more output than most vintage pups but not anything like the FS-1. Perfect for U2 tone and noiseless also!
@muymalmoon:
I don't use any audio mastering. It's direct from guitar to Axe-Fx Ultra to Apogee Duet interface, and then from headphone jack of the Duet to a Sign Video XLR-PRO XLR Adapter that connects to my video camera. The Sign Video adapter plugs into the mic input of my Canon HD. The backtrack is played from Logic and goes from the computer to the Duet, where it is mixed with the guitar from the Axe. So I get video and audio recording together direct with no mic. Works great!
WOW perfection! Awesome playing and tone. EFX are spot on. One of my all time fave songs of ANY band and U2's. Such a powerful song esp seeing it LIVE in concert. Goosebumps. I need to practice more to learn this song but will get there....keep it love. Love your vids. MORE U2 please!
Definitely want the regular set. Plus has a hotter bridge. When you mismatch power in two pups (bridge and middle) you lose quack. You dont want to lose quack for U2 stuff. So stay with the regular set. The kinman regular is still slightly hotter than other vintage pups. It's PERFECT for U2 stuff.
@jollykap: Tone has a slightly different quality about it. It's all analog circuitry vs. the Axe which is all digital. I just put it in the FX loop and put delays after it. Although you can put delays before it also. Works either way. Delays might be stronger going into it than putting them after. Adjust mix accordingly.
My absolute favorite song of all time, with One as a close 2nd. Great job. Is that equipment listed in the title what makes The Edge’s guitar echo like it does in that song. You do an incredible job!
@ravi4lyf:
Tuned down half step to Eb.
Wonderful Videos!
Thank you very much for uploading them. I learned to play the song „Bad“ watching your contributions (and not only this song).
Just two remarks, that occurred during learning this song by your fantastic videos: In Part A 11 you demonstrate the pull-off from 12th fret to open string. I personally do now the pull-off to the 9th fret.
(Continued in the next commentary...)
Awesome tutorial and a great player you are
How about "Gloria" when you get some time?
Maudit maudiiiit / litfiba :-)
As in your fingering the index is free, there is no problem to do like this. In my ears it sounds better. Second: in Part A 15 you use the pinky in a variation to play the 17th fret. I play this variation using the 14th fret (F#). To me, it sounds more accurate concerning the Live Aid version, even if I do not know what the Edge is actually playing.
Again, thank you very much, great work, that helped me a lot! Keep it up!!!
Te mantienes en un re para retomar la segunda estrofa?
are they the reg woodstock pick ups or the plus? $254 in the kinman site
Professional job! I am a bass player but all of your works are impressed me!
Thanks man!!
I really enjoy your tutorials.
Hi Michael, your strings are 0,11 or 0,12? they seem so thick...
@JazzInc:
Join U2_Guitar_Tutorials group on Google Groups. We just set up our new files website. I'll upload them there later tonight.
woooaa Litfiba on intro :)
@joshtree14:
Regular. I have a plus and it's great but has a little less quack. For max quack you want the pups to be matched. The regular have plenty of gain. More than vintage pups, but not too much either. You could get one of the Kinman harnesses and buy the plus with the clips, so you can change out the bridge pup easily.
@U2TOTAL: Hi! Well, first, the Triad is an improved Korg SDD-3000 pre-amp circuit and is meant to work with a Class A, tube amplifier like the AC-30. I'm not familiar with the Mesa. Is is a tube amp? You want the Triad to go right into the preamp of your amplifier. So if it's in the effects loop of the Axe, then put it last in the chain going into your amp. It won't have the same effect with solid state amps. It's supposed to drive the preamp stage of a tube amp.
@EdgeFan567: I'm really not convinced it matters regarding the brand. But I like 0.11s on Strats for U2 stuff. More chime.
@JazzInc:
Please be patient. We just started on Goog Groups on Thursday. I haven't uploaded all the files to the new files section yet. Give me a day or two. We will get it up soon.
@spikelive:
Yes, the BT is from R&H at 104 BPM. But my tone is closer to Wide Awake in America.
@Rafal102able:
Join U2_Guitar_Tutorials on Google Groups and ask on the board.
@Tsheppar78: LOL, I never noticed that. Is that not normal?
@jmsantamaria: Yes, Psionic asked for permission to place a link to the vid. Thx!
Chiming in a few years late here but hey, this is a good tutorial showing the little nuances in edges picking style but one that's missed is the transition to D. Pretty sure edge plays the first Low D Of the main riff a half beat early which gives that drop a very distinct run on marching effect. That also makes sense given the fingering observations of edge (in one of the later part ... Part A8?) where it's said that he fingers in a way that requires a wider jump down the fret board - in such cases many musicians will play an open strum (in this case on the d string). any edge fans care to try this you may like the outcome a bit more :)
Your tutorials are so professional and have helped me learn U2 songs correctly, to that I thank you , but I swear if your right hand strumming thumb bent anymore inward it would break ! Must be a double joint thing or something . I guess its like my golf swing... looks odd , but Works !
perfect as usual!! but the backtrack is from rattle & hum(432ms,104 bpm dotted eight,Eb tuning) is it right?
grazie ,thank you ...ciao cheers greetings from italy!
dude i love your videos. you are a fantastic teacher. but i hate to be a stickler that the version is from rattle and hum not wide awake... not a big deal really i thought i would point it out
You may be right. I didn't create the backtrack. Thx.
Nope it's from Unforgettable Fire album, also recorded live on 4 track EP Wide Awake in America album
@@seejay60 Nope it's the Rattle and Hum live version.
Hy what type of kinman woodstock pickups are you using? Regular ones or....?
@wpaone:
0.11s should be fine. Love them.
@U2GuitarTutorials
Hello. I really enjoy your tutorials and your playing. What strings would you ultimately recommend for Edge-like tones? I currently have 09's on my EJ Strat for playing the crazy bends that Gilmour utilizes but have been an U2 mood lately. Tried playing Streets and the Herdim almost gets caught on the thin 09 (also sounds thin). Thanks in advance!
Please do a cover of Seconds and a tutorial. Theres barely any tutorials for Seconds on RUclips.
Man your playing is amazing. I actually was looking at different websites while this video was playing and needed to turn the audio off to listen to something else and I went to itunes to turn it off, then realized it was on youtube and not the actual song!! Haha fooled me!
LOVE !!
@U2GuitarTutorials thx Michael..never used, always go with ernie ball. tried daddario as per dallas intervew but I didn't like them. I'll try red rotosound 0,11 next...
thanks a ton this cover was more than helpful. I love how the edge took 2 (or 4 I'm too lazy to figure out if they're the same) chords and makes an amazing, beautiful riff. that's true talent. whenever I try I just end up sounding stupid :P
@rmoyavaldivia: Blue Herdims
If I can get Just close to being as good as you are I will be happy. Big wishes for someone 63 years young. lol
