1) Symphonies Of Sickness 2) Necroticism 3) Heartwork 4) Reek Of Putrefaction 5) Surgical Steel 6) Swansong I think it’s worth mentioning that I genuinely love all of Carcass’ stuff, and my top 3 are also all so close to one another that it’s hard to rank them. Pretty much anytime I throw on Symphonies/Necroticism/Heartwork, I’m convinced whichever one I’m listening to at the time is my favorite.
The only Carcass album I've ever really listened to was SYMPHONIES OF SICKNESS and I enjoyed it well enough but it was never a favorite of mine. But thanks to this video, I'm currently listening to SURGICAL STEEL and holy fuck! Thank you, man! This is a phenomenal album all around!
Is not easy to compare some of their albums because they are so different, like Reek of Putrefaction and Swansong..they seem like from a different band almost. Anyway my fave one is *Necroticism* ...but *Symphonies of Sickness* will always have a special place for me, at that time I was listening mainly to thrash bands and that album was so raw and brutal in comparison, even the artwork was insane... it totally blew out my head and eyes.
*Carcass jumping from Grindcore to Death-Grind to Death Metal to Melodeath:* Parkour Anyways: 6) Reek Of Putrefaction 5) Symphonies of Sickness 4) Swan Song 3) Necroticism 2) Surgical Steel 1) Heartwork

Good ranking overall, I have a different top album but solid stuff. And I heartily agree that Swansong is a fun and underrated album. My ranking would probably be... 1) Heartwork - the masterwork 2) Necroticism - a pure death metal masterpiece 3) Surgical Steel - follows solidly in Heartwork's footsteps. 4) Torn Arteries - also solid 5) Swansong - criminally underrated and a lot of fun. 6) Symphonies of Sickness - excellent DM/grind hybrid album, the musicianship is amazing. I had to put it here because I listen to the others more, but this is great. 7) Reek of Putrefaction - I'm not a fan of pure grind, especially not with potato-quality recording production. Simply not my cup of tea, but I understand how grind fans adore this.

I've only listened to Heartwork, i always come to these videos to see which album is the best for getting into a band and I hope surgical steel doesn't disappoint, because Heartwork was insane
If someone gets into Carcass they should probably listen to Necroticism or Heartwork, then Symphonies and then the rest. Most normal metal fans would probably hate Reek. Its production is really shit. I still like it but it is their weakest album apart from maybe Swansong.
1. Swansong 2. Symphonies of Sickness 3. Necrotism 4. Heartwork 5. Reek of Putrefaction 6. Surgical Steel 7. Torn Arteries This is controversial, but my oppinion.
Questy I have a band for you that replicates the polished yet brutal and not at all cheesy melodeath sound of heartwork: Intestine Baalism They’re a melodeath band from Japan and are one of the my all time favorites now. I would highly recommend them
I love Swansong and probably listen to it more than the others, just because I can listen to it when I'm not in the mood for anything aggressive. Heartwork is my favorite by far but I'm a bit burned out on it. Surgical steel is so close to heartwork but has a few tracks I never listen to
Carcass should have been much bigger than bands like Cannibal Corpse and Obituary in my opinion. They have always had a knack for really bringing out the sounds of each individual instrument. Amott/Steer were a creative, potent combination.
I'm of the same mind that Heartwork does a fantastic job blending melody and brutality, I would definitely like more melodic death in that style. One of the cooler aspects of Heartwork that I think often goes unnoticed is that while a lot of Swedish melodic death metal bands especially would just decide, "hey, let's take NWOBHM melodies and put them in a death metal framework", some of the melodies in Heartwork sound very reminiscent of 70s hard rock rather than just NWOBHM. And don't get me wrong, there's definitely NWOBHM inspired guitar harmonies, but I think that clear love of 70s hard rock that starts to show up on Heartwork ought to give someone more context for why Swansong is the way it is, they essentially just go even further into incorporating rock melodies and rhythms.
I saw Carcass in patchogue NY in 2015 and I fukin loved the show. Ive been a fan since Heartwork back when i heard it in 95. They're still tearing away. Surgical Steel is like Heartwork, part two. One of the last remaining relevant 90's death metal bands
Didn't listen to all of them, but I've been playing Swansong almost every day and I love it. Just Black Star and Generation Hexed are way better than 90% of the songs I listened in my life.
My favorite for many years used to be Necroticism, and arguably their best songs are in it, but as a whole I don't enjoy it as much as others. Nowadays I prefer the newer stuff, for instance, I can´t stop jamming Torn Arteries since it came out! 1 - Surgical Steel 2 - Heartwork 3 - Torn Arteries 4 - Necroticism 5 - Symphonies (I love it more than I used to; some of it sound like Necroticism demos though) 6 - Swansong (I love it more than I used to) 7 - Reek of Putrefaction
1) Surgical Steel 2) Heartwork 3) Reek of Putrefaction 4) Symphonies of Sickness 5) Necroticism 6) Swansong all these albums are great. flawless discography. the top 3 are 10s, the rest are 8s. Also, we have the same favorite carcass song! Granulating Dark Satanic Mills is so fucking catchy
1. Necroticism. 2. Heartwork 3. SoS 4. SS 5. Swansong 6. RoP for me. Edit: I agree about RoP, I don't care for it either, but Necroticism blew my mind and was my 1st exposure to Carcass. C.J.Q. hooked me instantly.
Carcass were always one step ahead, the two albums in a row that resemble are the last two, surgical and torn arteries 1-grindcore 2-deathgrind 3- death metal 4-melodic death metal 5- death n' roll 6- melodic death metal 7- melodic death metal
Necroticism is my favorite as you said because of the balance. The others Id have to think long and hard. But the first album is definitely their weakest. I agree with that.
Yay one of my favorite bands ever. 6 Necroticism 3/5 5 Reek of Putrefaction 4/5 4 Swan Song 4.5/5 3 Surgical Steel 5/5 2 Symphonies of Sickness 5/5 1 Heartwork 5/5
Gotta agree with you about Surgical Steel being above Heartwork. OK, unpopular opinion: Heartwork DID NOT create melodic death metal. In my opinion, the first melodic death metal album is Like An Everflowing Stream by Dismember.
Maybe it's unpopular, but it's the objectively correct opinion. Cyanotic, Eucharist, and Dark Tranqullity each released demos that were firmly melodeath in '92. Eucharist, Dark Tranquillity, Desultory and Sentenced released albums the same year Heartwork came out (the last three a few months prior to Heartwork, whereas the date Eucharist released their first album is now lost to history). If we're including melodic black/death, and I'm not sure why we wouldn't, Dissection and Unanimated also dropped their debuts in '93 as well. And of course, there are arguments to be made that Dismember's "Like An Everflowing Stream" and Edge of Sanity's "Unorthodox" should be included here. I wouldn't mind anyone saying Carcass popularized melodic death metal, as at that time Carcass were probably more well established than many of those other bands, but certainly they did not create the genre.
That is one brutal as fuck slab of Swedish Death. It reminds me of punk more than once too. I wouldn't call it melodeath personally, but it has similarities for sure. I'll stick with Heartwork, but it isn't the first i guess. Maybe Sentenced's North From Here or Dark Tranquillity's Skydancer? Too lazy to look it up lol
1. Reek of Putrefaction (easily top 10 albums of all time, for me 10/10) 2. Symphonies of sickness (absolutely excellent death metal with insane grind elements 9.5/10) 3. Surgical Steel (extremely great modern death metal record. Mixes all the great elements of the band into one. 8.5/10) 4. Necrotisism (extremely solid death metal record, fun listen all the way through 8/10) 5. Heartwork (Great Melodeath. Produced well and great riffs throughout. 7.5/10) 6. Swan song (Decent. Fun Death-n-roll type album, a bit soft for my taste. 6/10)
I feel like drummers dislike swansong most. Just pay attention next listen and you'll understand. I really enjoy it but i understand the gripes with it.
6. Reek of Putrefaction 5. Necroticism 4. Symphonies of Sickness 3. Surgical Steel 2. Heartwork 1. Swansong (4-1 are all pretty even for me Carcass have a great discography)
@@AssfaceOmega yeah I love a lot of the songs on the album. I will say it does feel a bit long at some parts but songs like Blackstar are easily my favorite by the band
The disrespect for Reek of putrefaction is mind boggling to me. When that album came out it was the sickest and heaviest music around. I know its not as mature as their later stuff but i still prefer it to the melodic stuff like Heartwork. I know im in the minority but its just my opinion
I can agree with a lot said here, but Surgical Steel was a HUGE disappointment- It was trying too hard. 1. Heartwork 2. Swansong 3. Necro 4. S. Steel 5. That one with the vegetables. I could swap 2 & 3 depending on my mood.

Necroticism is their best album as it has the grinding parts, as well as the melodic parts.
