Yeah, I thought my x58 died (long story monitor actually died....) and built a x99 6900K oc ed to 4.1; my x58 was a 5670 oced to 4.45, and honestly, there isnt much a difference. Best case scenario is GTA 5 and thats like 80 fps vs 130 fps. Most games are like 20 fps boost; at what was already exceedingly playable. Wait til the stuff that comes out in a year or two either comes out or becomes cheap.

When Ryzen came out the prices dropped on the CPU's and I purchased a 4960x for $200 US. Huanan X79 Deluxe is based on C602 chipset (server version of X79). It supports quad channel. The chipsets are scavenged from old server boards. If you bough a Runing X79, please try to use more than 2 PCIe x16 slots at the same time. It does not work! I have one and I had to contact the chinese manufacturer who confirmed this. even the dual cpu's one like JINGSHA X79 S8 and HUANANZHI X79-8D is almost impossible to get quad channel to work...

      @@dfsstuff6572 , Huanan X79-ZD3 is a single-socket board though.

and when it comes to overclocking, the Huanan X79-ZD3 cost as much as an used Asus P9X79 board (at least with local prices) and while not new it will be far better at it and not burn up as most of the Huanan boards does after a while because of mediocre VRM's.
(and OC with dual socket boards is not something you want to do with boards that can't handle extreme power loads, so like 99.9% of em)

The only problem with this is i like to keep up to date so i now have systems a lot of people can only dream about just littering the house But they are still used and outperform a lot of today's gear.

As an X79 user for the past 5 years I agree. Using an ASUS X79 Deluxe, 3930K OC'd to 4.8 GHz, 1080Ti, two 400 GB Intel 750 SSD's (HHL), 8x2GB of 2133 G-Skill Ripjaws Z Series in a Lian Li PC-O11 ROG and full liquid cooled setup. ASUS had a competition between Deluxe vs Rampage owners to see which motherboard would get an NVME BIOS update. Deluxe won the vote, so in 02-2016 an NVME compatible BIOS was released. All around performance is excellent. I'll wait to see what Jim Keller does over at Intel before I decide to upgrade again. Great informative videos.

You are totally to the point. Main brands are not manufacturing the X79 boards, hence the prices are going crazy up. The Hunans give you a cosmetic X79, but not actual one. It is the market orchestrated to keep re-inventing the wheel. And making money in the process. Solution: get a server board with dual x79, this will keep you satisfied for many years to come.

Just picked up a PX79 LE Asus Board thrifting with 4x4 GB sticks of Ripjaw ddr3 ram in the box for $28.00 CDN. Pretty good deal if it works. It looks barely used and basically new so whoever donated it to the thrift shop I got it at took real good care to make sure it was packed up all nice and neatly. Going to repurpose it for a school computer for my classroom, assuming I can find a chip to go in it.

My Asus Sabertooth x79 board is still hammering away after 8 years of use and was paired with the 3930K from day one which is OC'd to 4683MHz along with 4 x 8GB(32GB) GSkill TridentX 1600MHz @ 7-8-8-24 208 2T it was great at 1080p with my MSI GTX970 Gaming video card but several years ago I went to 1440P on my main display (3 display setup) and it had struggled to maintain smooth game play at ultra settings and had to make compromises, so I finally upgraded to an MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio and no more issues at 1440p at Ultra settings.
This generation of hardware was and still is great value, I spent my money right once and it has held up strong, I have had to use my Corsair warranty on my AIO water cooler H80 several years ago and my HX850 PSU which both went faulty before the 5 year and 7 year warranties had run out and Corsair sent me the new versions of both, the H80i and HX850i, and though I now use a H150i Corsair's RMA has looked after me very well and my eldest daughter has the H80i in her rig.
Case is the Lian Li Lancool Dragon Lord PC-K58 Black from 10 years ago, look it up you can see the huge differences, I also cut the side panel and for $40 got a company down here in Victoria to custom cut me a piece of tempered glass.

Has done me very well indeed, including following me from the UK to NZ in bits and still working! Until last weekend that is when either motherboard or cpu has died. Hard to get hold of replacements here in a timely manner so going AMD for the first time since the Athlon XP with a new 2700x setup.

Continued: I built my Sabertooth X79 system about five years ago for sim racing. I'm a big fan of Asus. My system I call THOR, because that the case it's in, is even to day one of the fastest baddest computers I've ever put together. I own a small computer business in Lodi California. I started with the X79 Sandy Bridge, i7 4820K, 8 GB of Flex II RAM, 120 GB SSD, Sapphire Radion 7970 with Boost GPU and a Corsair AX1200 power supply. I was in PC heaven, the thing just kicked ass. I was running Windows 7 Ultimate and killing it at Project CARS. There was a problem with the Sandy bridge and Asus replaced the board with one that had the Ivy bridge fix. Two years go by with out a problem. Then I got the update bug. Changed the SSD to a 500 GB. Pulled the RAM and installed 32 GB of Kingston RAM (4 sticks). Still no problems. I got a new GPU, the EVGA NVIDIA GTX 980 ti Hybrid. This was at 2 1/2 years. I soon stated having a problem while racing in project cars. I'd be racing and the screen would just go black for 10 to 20 seconds, then it would come back. Most of the time I'd be off track or into a wall. I bought the card used but contacted EVGA anyway. They had me send them the card and TWO days later sent me a brand new card with a four year warranty and what they said was an experimental BIOS. It worked without a problem. Then six months later, which would be two years ago this month, I bought the Aorus 1080 ti 11 GB card, and sold my EVGA. I got to enjoy it for 1 1/2 weeks. Then the day after Microsoft's big yearly update, my system started to blue screen a lot. It took months before I discovered what was causing it. I tried reinstalling my OS but it would always blue screen during install. Then I read a post, (one that has sins vanished from the web) about Microsoft's Feb update. What I read was alarming. The writer accused Microsoft of (for lack of a better term) planting a virus in there update that looked for 8th gen OEM systems running windows 7. When found, locked up the BIOS. They are said to have done this because of an agreement they had with Intel and AMD. In this agreement all computers sold after a certain date would have the windows 10 OS. The writer went on to say that this update was said to have spilled over and affected some older CPU's, making them unable to run windows 7. It sounded crazy, right? but I took a chance and tried windows 10 and sure enough, it loaded just fine. I've sins tried to reload windows 7 and could not. It worked fine, but within a month started the random black screens, which over time progressed until they where happening two or three times a day. Microsoft told me it was a hardware problem, so I began changing hardware. To date I have changed every single part of this PC, including the cables and monitors. Everything! The motherboard was replaced my Asus Corp in Fremont Cali. about 50 miles from me, with a brand new ivy bridge board. My CPU is cooled with a Corsair H115i Pro, and I even built the water cooling loop from hell for my GPU, South Bridge and Mosfits. My max temps are CPU 38C and GPU 48C. I've given up and in five days THOR is getting a heart transplant. Asus Prime Z370-A motherboard, i7 8700K CPU and 16 GB of DDR4 RAM. The time and money and aggravation are huge. Microsoft could't give a *(%&(%*&^*%, well you get it. Now everything I've said is the truth, without exaggeration. So let the buyer beware.

I commented this on fb, but I'm talking to a guy who's selling a x79 sabertooth with a i7 3820and a beefy air cooler for 175 US, now the bord is a bit damaged, it has its main pci slot missing and the audio does not work, but every thing els is fine, so i really wanna get this combo, i think its pretty cheap, since other sellers are advertising their x79 for 320+ $$ with only a bord and cpu here in Serbia.
I never personally owned a x79, it was always pricey and it still is even today, so i really hope i get this deal and make use of that quad channel memory, i also have a guy selling a working i7 4820k for $60, so i hope to get both and try some overclocking and see how it goes.

I've had my X79 Rig nearly two years, got a great deal on a rather basic X79 thing and upgraded it in all ways except for the mobo, PSU and case (love me some sabertooth stuff, and I am yet to fault my CM HAF X Case).
    Went from a i7 3820 with 2x4gb 1866mhz, GeForce 210, arctic freezer i30 etc to a 4930K, 24gb quad channel vengeance pro at 1600mhz, GTX 1070 with a H100i V2 to cool the CPU.
I haven't even needed to oc anything yet, so I'm one happy person with this rig. In all its cost me around £800 (I were an idiot and paid £395 for a 1070 at the start of the mining craze 😑)
I may get a Xeon down the line for more cores but I don't need them yet.
As always, great content and I completely agree. If you can find this stuff cheap, like I did with the bundle I got and upgraded from over the last 18ish months, X79 is more than worth it 👌

1:15 - There was a period of time about 2 to 1.5 years ago when good X79 mbds were very affordable indeed, I bought quite a few of them, mostly the R4E, P9X79 WS and P9X79-E WS (average price was about 125 UKP for a WS, the R4E somewhat less, the E-WS a bit more). Best BIN deal I bagged was an R4E, 16GB/2400 RAM and 3930K for 200 UKP, and elsewhere a new in box R4E for 80 UKP. Today, the good mbds are hard to find (or expensive) whereas the CPUs are dirt cheap; even I have seven 3930Ks to sell off. :D If one can find a good mbd, the low cost of a 3930K can offset the mbd cost somewhat. Just a pity those 1680 v2 XEONs are so expensive, and alas RAM is another matter aswell, but hunt for GSkill TridentX or Corsair if you can.
Note that a worthy CPU compromise is the 2680 v2, the later 10-core part; it's not an oc'able CPU, but its stock performance is pretty good, scoring 1389 for CB R15. Ref:
    www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/tests-jj.txt
Where it suffers of course is IPC, scoring only 112 for the single thread test, but if one cares more about threads than single core performance then it's a good choice, and much cheaper than the 1680 v2; a year ago I was buying the 2680 v2 for 150 UKP each. Still, unless PCIe lane provision is important, modern Ryzen may make more sense in terms of general threaded CPU performance, but it's perhaps more fun doing stuff with something that people will insist is utterly out of date, yet often be able to beat modern systems sometimes. :D X79 holds its own because it came before the age of Intel's PCIe lane gimping with the 5820K. And remember the history of all this too, the 3930K *was* an 8-core CPU, it's just a XEON part with 2 cores disabled; Intel didn't release an 8-core SB-E because they just didn't have to, back then AMD was having problems even competing with the middling 2500K.
Overall though, yes indeed X79 has still has the wow factor which has long since gone from later Intel chipsets. I have a Rampage V Extreme with a 6850K and it's just *yawn*. AMD brought the fun back in terms of basic specs, value for money, more cores & suchlike, but nothing since X79 on the Intel side has been as interesting or fun for oc'ing. Don't forget that even the baseline i7 3820 has the same 40 PCIe lanes (albeit 2.0) and many people ran them at 5GHz+. Likewise, the 4820K is a cheap option to get those same lanes @ 3.0 if the primary need is for PCIe; it's hillarious that a 4820K on an R4E can do things with PCIe that a 7820X can't.
    Just a darn shame the 2680 v2 isn't oc'able.

are there realy 40 PCI 3.0 lanes if i chabge my e5-1660 to an 1660 v2 or 1680 v2? now there are 32 PCIe 3.0 lanes if no other slot is used as 1and 4, or no other lane. if it is the performance falls to 2.0 and x8 at one x16 slot at the rampage iv extreme???

Still on the Sabertooth x79 here too! i7 3930k, 64gb ram, NVMe modded bios.
The motherboard is showing its age though... I don't fully trust the SATA ports (had a few SSDs prematurely die and require RMA). Plus on boot up my audio sometimes doesn't work and I have to reboot to get it back... I'm not mad thought - the board has lasted 8 years and I'm writing this message on that system right now! In the end I opted to buy a good looking Huanan X79 for $150 with quad channel ram and NVMe baked in by default. Just $150 and I should be back up and running 100% again. We'll see how it goes.
I also decided to grab a second Huanan X79 board - this one with dual CPU support. Grabbed two Xeon E5 2690 v2 CPUs, two nice Noctua NH-U12DXi4 fans and 256gb ECC ram at 1600mhz. Planning to do some heavy virtualization work along with some machine learning tasks.
It was a difficult choice, but there is no way I could have gotten this much ram and a dual cpu server-grade system for less than a fortune.
Bottom line is this platform still delivers!

I definitely can’t afford x79 right now, but you’ve been a great inspiration for me to look into upgrading my current set up to an x58 board. The used price to performance is incredible on those old rigs. That said, even if the price to performance isn’t quite there with x79, I definitely agree there is a wow factor to it and there’s something to be said about it’s relevancy as a platform in 2018 and moving forward.

More recent CPUs have already been pushed to their limits on air. Xeons have always been much lower clocked and highly binned. When the 1366 sockets launched, i was one of the first to jump with both feet in.... and i used a few systems until the x79 solution was announced.. I purchased/built a Asus P9X79 Pro + 3930k + 4x8gb PC17000 2133mhz Patriot Black Mamba 3 Setup and with a noctua NH-D14 that was available at the time and the corsair HX1000, plus the fact that i was very heavily involved with every crossfire setup from the initial x850's through to even today with rx 500.... this system was perfectly balanced for my uses. Bios updates that added pci-ex 3.0 support, Initial SATA III support to run ssd's at full speed, and then later the ability to add a NVMe pci-ex card to boot from if need be. granted the Asmedia usb 3.0 controller performance was pretty damn lackluster, but with those 40 pci-ex lanes, i was able to snag myself a faster add-in card if need be. The system at one point actually ran 9x4TB Hitachi drives for a few years before selling them off and consolidating to WD Reds, the board ran the whole thing beautifully without error.
I also have ran the 3930k at a moddest 4.3GHz overclock while still being able to use speedstep and all it's power savings functions without cooking it all. Simply bumping the BLK to 130mhz and dropping the multiplier a smidge in order to get my 4.3ghz, couldn't ask for a more stable system (granted the ddr3 had to be dropped from 2133mhz down to 2080mhz which is pretty insignificant imo while maintaining great latency).
Outside of just upgrading the SSDs and HDDs along with the graphics cards, even today i really honestly have no real justifiable reason to migrate away from it just yet, and to what would i bother without feeling like i've downgraded outside of arguably the only viable option being threadripper in the 12-24 core range.
I suspect that upon Zen 2's release of the threadrippers (Ryzen Threadripper 3000 series), that is when i'll consider making the move. It'll be the best bang for the buck as my 3930k and p9x79 pro board will still retain a decent value, and is still far more than usuable and powerful for pretty much anything.
IMO i think this has been the most badass system i've used, and because i bought in 2011 while living canada, i got the best possible value on everything as our dollar was rather strong at that time, and shortly after buying it, everything i had purchased rapidly climbed up in value by almost 40% and remained there for years. It's only been since ryzen launched in march 2017, that the value of my 3930k and x79 in general actually started dropping. It's great that AMD's reemergence into the market with a viable contender that is doing very well, that we've actually seen a decent generation leap in performance and computing that puts a standard desktop at a performance level capable of toppling something in the higher end, while also being significantly cheaper.

      @warrax111 Год назад +1

@@Jonathon.Johnston Lol, thank you for reply. In my view, you didn't squeeze another 5 years out of it, because "squeezing" is meant for primary computer, when using old hardware. :)
Anyway, you found a good use on it, which is cool, that hardware get use out, before it give up, and not trashed out.
Btw, I share my story, which is quite funny I think. I'm squeezing LGA775 platform (Asus p5Q deluxe) for 11 years right now. Just exchanged Q6600 for Q9650 (it improved a lot, both performance and power consumption).
As I've used heavily overclocked Q6600 with idle states turned off, it was burning 136W of power. I almost got heart attack, I've found it after 10 years of usage. :D Would make at least 200$ more on electricity through those years.
Anyway, after upgrading to Q9650, which is most powerful LGA775 processor, I can use non-overclocked CPU to get about same performance, as Q6600 on 3.4Ghz. It has 3 ghz, but more cache, and it's somehow improved. What is good, I even undervolt it (from 1,15v to 1,07v) and it's still rock stable.
I've also get rid of old Geforce 8800GTS, that I've bought in 2010 as cheap game graphic card, because I've stoped to played 3D games in 2013. It was really burner in 2D mode, and I've just swapped it for geforce 210, as it's enough for 2D adapter card.
My powerconsumption went down to 79W in idle after this, and after CPU sleep states enabling, and performance stood maybe only 5% lower.
That's my story of squeezing out. I need to give aplaus to that Asus p5Q deluxe motherboard, holding 11 years used as primary computer, first years on quite frequent gaming in 3D (last years mostly only in idle, or only watching youtube videos). :D

Hey Bryan a couple of years back I replaced my Asus Tuf gaming x79 board with my z390 mainly because my wife's computer died and she didn't want to spend money on a new computer so I did and she ended up with the x79 which she is still using now.. after seeing what you have shown in this video i am rethinking replacing this system and maybe work to get in up and running to its maximum potential.. I think its currently got a heap of miss matched ram to make up 16 gig lol with a i7 -3820 cpu.She is currently using a gtx1050Ti which she won't part with saying its good enough for what she wants lol. When I had it I knew it performed well but wasn't aware of how good the technology was back then for this board..

I am running X79 with an Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2 (12 core, 24 thread) cpu, given your comments in the video do you consider this chip inferior to the 8-core Intel Xeon E5-1680 v2 after overclocking? I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this cpu comparison. Great content as always!

It depends on what you're doing. Is threaded performance more important to you than single core performance? What about power consumption, thermals, efficiency and noise? An oc'd 1680 v2 will end up with similar threaded performance but much better IPC than a higher core count 2600 v2 series XEON (I did quite a bit of meddling with the 2680 v2, I had five of them), but at the expense of power, noise, etc. Better IPC will help a lot for some types of tasks, especially certain newer games, but it matters much less for others such as modelling in Blender. I'm curious, what scores do you get just now for CB R15 multi and single threaded? I don't yet have a 1680 v2 but I have lots of other data here:

Cinebench result for my Xeon E5-2697 v2 are as follows: 1653 (max) and 1638 (avg) after 7 runs. I also have an E5-2680 v3 (also 12 core) for comparison on the x99 platform that comes in at: 1811 (max) and 1790 (avg) after 7 runs.
More comparisons: i7-4930k (oc 4.3): 1075 (max) and 1071 (avg).
      I7-4770 (oc 4.4): 846 (max) and 845 (avg)
To compare that with a modern CPU, my stock Threadripper 1950x gets: 3011 (max) and 3004 (avg)
Those are the CPU’s I had in my machines at present.

@@jordanwalker2000 Thanks for the info!! And sorry for the delay, was away for a while. Interesting about the 2680 v3 uplift, that's only just a bit more than 9% (vs. a core count increase of 20%). Am I right in thinking therefore that the v3 has a lower max all-core turbo?
      Btw, my 4930K @ 4.5 gives 1202, though that could be partly due to the RAM (2400 @ CL10). Still not pipped a 3930K @ 4.8 giving 1241 though.
Something I'd like to know is why CB at all gives a higher result on a 1st run, what the heck is it doing? I can see why some are saying it's become a broken benchmark, it behaves very badly with a lot more threads.

    • @jordanwalker2000
      @jordanwalker2000 5 лет назад

The 2680v3 is a 12c24t processor just like the 2697v2, and yes it has a lower base and boost clock. I was surprised by the result.
I am interested at your 3930k vs 4930k results, I have a spare 3930k on my desk (and a 5930k too) so I am tempted to apply overclocks and test those generational cpus if I get time. I heard the 3930k was a great overclocker. I usually only push for around 80% on the OC for stability, so I will rarely extract the maximum performance for benchmarking...

I'm still using x79, pretty happy with it after upgrading my GPU to 1080Ti! AIDA64 memory latency is like top of the chart around 55ns! Also, There were 3 Ivy-bridge-e die variants afaik, 6core (s1), 10core (m1), and 12core(c1). So the one Bryan is using is not quite the best its a 10core die with 2 cores disabled. The best in this stepping would be E5-2690 v2. My passmark bench: www.passmark.com/baselines/V9/display.php?id=112901722546

I bought an ASUS P9X79 Pro + 32GB DDR3 non-EEC unbuff 1600 RAM (Hynix) + CoolerMaster CPU Tower cooler + i7 3820; all for USD 220. Swapped in an E5-1650V2 and this baby runs fast and cool (turbos to 4.4GHz and at stress goes to 69C, idles at 35-40C, games at up to 55C). Will keep the ASROCK Extreme 3 for backup and sell both i7 and E5-1660.
I absconded with the E5-1650V2 from my daughter's rig and replaced it with an E5-4627V2 that I got on eBay for only $94 delivered. 8C/8T that clocks to 3.5GHz on all cores. Runs well with HuananZhi X79 deluxe. Easier on the VRM's too. Plenty enough to Fortnite on that rig.

Part of your video make me consider Xeon E5-1680 V2, thx you for the info to this point. Im rolling Sabertooth X79 + i7-3930K @ 4600Mhz + 16GB @ 2400Mhz RAM for about 6 and a half years. Beautiful platform ! But this 1680 V2 damn, it put a small on my face. It's just fun to work on 7 years old platform, and making it more and more powerful (really powerful, not 10-15% etc..) + the stable support for boot NVME drives.
I'll wait for your benchmarks. Thx and keep the good work.

my first computer was a hp don't remember the model but had a pentium 2 250mhz and 128mb ram. then i would go to the computer repair shops and dumpster dive for parts to upgrade it and ended up having a pentium 3 500mhz in it with 512mb of ram 40gb hd windows xp pro. the got another hp given to me that had a amd semporn 1.6 ghz 256mb ram 20gb hd with windows xp home. my first build had a asus p5kr ppga 478 socket with a pentium 4 3.06 ghz and 2gb of ram duel 80gb hd's with windows xp home. then went from that to a laptop with a athlon ll 2.1 ghz duel core 3 gb of ram 320gb hd with windows 7 pro. upgraded the athlon to a turion 2.3 ghz and boosted the ram to 6 gb. now i'm using a older dell optiplex 760 with a q8400 core 2 quad 2.6 ghz 8 gb of ram 320gb hd +160gb evga 750 ti sc. it may not be the fastest computer but it does everything i need it to

I handed down my Rampage IV rig to my son, because it's too damn good an overclocker to be a #2 rig for me, when it can be a #1 rig for him that's still future-proof for a few years. I could get him comparable performance for less money with Ryzen, but it's fun to give him a still-relevant Intel HEDT platform because 32GB of quad-channel memory is badass even when it's DDR3.

  • @TheRailroad99

I think you should also start looking into X99.
It's a bit early, and DDR4 is pricy, but at least here in Germany the used market SLOWLY fills up with X99+CPU+(sometimes) RAM. Not that efficient right now but I think next year or so we will begin to see some quite good deals. In my opinion X99 is a lot more modern than X79 (but on the other hand i think it still misses AVX512 which is one of the major drawbacks of X79)

Generally if you have a x79 it worth keeping for possibly several years to come. Oh, I should say they are both running identical 1080 ti GPU's. 32GB memory in both systems dual channel vs quad. 2133mhz vs 3200mhz

great video, however, this all depends on what board you use. I was using a Sabertooth X79 with a custom BOIS. Both were new and provided by Asus Corp. My cpu was a 4820k running at 4.75 GHz. with 32GB of DDR3 2100 MHz. The problem and the reason I finally had to switch was graphic. I was using NVIDIA a Aorus GTX 1080 ti 11GB card. this combo gave me rendum black screens. It took months of changing parts to discover it was compatibility problem that no one intended to fix. So if you're out there fighting this, you now know way. if you happen to have AMD graphics, your fine for now.
