I always use a neutralizing shampoo labelled as such, but I checked the Paul Mitchell Awapuhi ph level and it's between 5.5 and 6 so it acts as a neutralizing shampoo :) . affirm neutralizing shampoo which is the one I used to use has a ph of 6. Hey, nayomiek! Welcome! 🥳 I always said that if I went back to a salon, I would have them use Affirm since my sister’s old stylist used to use it on her and I loved the way her hair looked afterwards. Heard nothing but good things about it. So glad it works for you, too! 👍🏾
Yes!! You are helping me conquer my hesitations. Neutralizing shampoo makes my hair feel crunchy and I HATE it. I am going to try your tip during my next relaxer. What you explained makes so much sense. Thanks!
I just found your channel and binge watching your videos just wanted to tell you about My favorite relaxer the soft sheen Carson optimum defy breakage my hair has never felt so soft and silky after best relaxer I’ve ever used and the neutraliser shampoo doesn’t strip the hair it’s feels even softer after the shampoo almost feels like you don’t need a conditioner 💗
@@DolceDawn i know this comment a year late but 😄 but being that Soft sheen Carson are the makers of both Optimum care and Precise hair relaxers, they may have similar great results🤗
I used to use my fingers too when I used Gentle Treatment..for the same reason and you're not overlapping as much and my hair was quite healthy and pretty long!
Hey, gemruby41! Thank you! I’m glad my hair is finally filling in. I use a flatiron to curl it and will def put a tutorial on my list of vids to post. 😉
Yep, I always said that if Precise discontinued (Lord, pls NO!), I would use Affirm. My sister used to use it (she’s now natural) and her hair was always on point. 💁🏾♀️👍🏾
I self relax and my hair does feel dry after neutralizing it.. I'll try and implement the hydrating shampoo as my third wash and see how it goes! Thanks for sharing!
Hi Dawn (this is Debbie Debeaux on my husbands computer)..I had to go back and re-listen to this video. I just got my relaxer in the salon and I'm not 100% sure my hair is fully neutralized enough. I think I am going to do a wash and use the Paul Mitchell Awpuhi just to feel like my hair will be alright. I think this will be milder than going in again with a neutralzier. Thanks for the advice you always share. Mullet is gone, bald spot is filled in about 1 3/4 inches after my relaxer!!! I'm really happy with the results! My apologies to just think you remember me, lol!!
Hey, Debbie! Girl, of course I remember you! Please… 😄 Glad to hear your hair is progressing - YAY! Yes, Paul Mitchell will be milder, but I wonder why you think your hasn’t been fully neutralized. Is it the feel of it? Does it feel chalky as if all the relaxer wasn’t washed out?
@@DolceDawn Well she neutralized really fast and I think she only did it 2x. It feels good but it's in the back of my mind especially since I'm bouncing back from the huge set back (pixie to mullet stage and I can't go back!!!! I'm scuuurd!!! 😆) I found the generic Awpuchi shampoo at Sally's yesterday.

Hey, karen! I’ve been using regular shampoo in lieu of traditional neutralizing shampoo for years now and have never had a problem. I find it just works better for my hair. It’s all about not only washing out the relaxer, but also lowering the pH and a regular shampoo can definitely do both.
Hey, Micca! No, I don’t use a traditional neutralizing shampoo as I feel it strips my hair, leaving it feeling extra dry like straw. I use Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi shampoo (a regular shampoo) instead.
Hey, Mary! WELCOME ABOARD! 🥳 Unfortunately, they have discontinued my beloved Wrap N Tap, but I do like (and have used) KeraCare’s setting lotion as well and plan on using it as a substitute when I finally run out.
Do you do a protein treatment a week before relaxing? I know some people do, but my hair doesn’t like protein products too much. I concentrate more on moisture.
Hey, gemruby41! No, I don’t do protein treatments at all. The only thing I use as far as a treatment goes is Olaplex and that’s the week AFTER I relax.
@@DolceDawn since reading your reply about using Olaplex, I've done a little research. Seems like a product I'd like to try out. Exactly which product from this line do you use after relaxing?
Hey, LaDonna! Currently, I use the Olaplex No. 3 Treatment, but I’ve heard nothing but good things about their whole line of products. If you try No. 3 or any of their other offerings, let me know. I’d like to hear your thoughts.
Hi, Kat! I’ve never tried a lye relaxer, so I can’t really speak for or against it. I will say that, according to most, lye relaxers are supposed to be gentler on the hair than no-lye, but harsher on the scalp while no-lye is supposed to be the opposite: gentler on scalp, harsher on hair. I, personally, would only stick to no-lye as lye seems like it would be way too harsh for me. But Hairlicious and a few others here on YT use only lye and their hair looks amazing, so it really is a personal choice based on knowing your hair. If you care to, pls let me know what you end up deciding on as I’d love to know how either works out for you.
Don't ever relax you hair without gloves from experience I've regretted it it ages your hand and nails please please don't you will never forgive yourself 🥺😢😭
Hey, caroline! Thank you for your comment. I’ve been relaxing gloveless for years with no ill effects, except for my nail turning yellow after application (the yellow later dissipating), but I am curious about your experience. When you used to relax without gloves, what kind of relaxer did you use (lye, no-lye?), what strength, how long was it on your finger or did you use your whole hand? How often did you relax?

@@carolinejenkins9574 With all due respect, it seems more like the constant hand-washing is what weathered your hands and not the relaxer, especially since people don't normally use their entire hand to apply the relaxer and only their fingers. I don't mean any offense but I think you're conflating two different things then making the claim that the relaxer had a hand in it when it really didn't. As for the hairdressers and friends you've known, there are likely other factors that weathered their hands especially since hairdressers have to be very tactile, similarly to a healthcare worker, due to the nature of their jobs but you automatically attribute it to the relaxer because it appears to be the more obvious culprit. That being said, it's still a great idea to take good care of our hands and neck as those are the areas that age faster than other parts our skin
