- Are all Big Bore kits created equally? What are some of the things you need to know? Stock Cylinders VS Oversized Bore. What are some of the best ways to do it? Things to look before you get started.
The fact he knows how to remain true.. Tells me he knows his shit.
To many "acceptable tolerances" these days.
I miss the days of true craftsmanship.
Solid machinist knowledge. Trust this dude.
I am going to be doing an 883 to 1200 bore. I was looking into kits s&s kits but also I am looking into having my cylinders bored and getting some good wiesco pistons. But now after watching this video, I am really thinking you are so right about the way to bore these out on a lathe. would you be interested in boring my cylinders? Thanks, great informative vid.
Being a former mouldmaker any time you work or build you always need to know your tolerances +and- and always measure and measure your mating parts which will take time and precision work done is not a cheap venture if the person doing it has integrity !
Trueing the bore is something I never considered.
Great informative video. Thanks!
Thanks I'm working on more videos. If you have any ideas on what I should make that would be greatly appreciated thanks Gary
Great video, Thanks very much. I Liked and I Subscribed also.
very informative! new subscriber.
I have a 103 I’m kind of on a budget would you recommend boring my current motor to 107 or just adding a good cam?
I do not recommend boring your jugs to A107 they will be too thin and the horsepower you would gain from cubic inches you would lose in integrity in the cylinders. You again much more horsepower by getting your heads ported and then a cams thanks Gary
Gary Cave where are you located sir ? I’m interested in getting work done on my Fatboy 103
Is it recommended to change stock cams after going from 88 to 95 cu. in.? I bought a used bike with the big bore kit previously installed and it feels like it is lacking in power.
Yes you definitely can gain some HP from a better cam remember an engine is an air pump so HP mainly comes from having your heads ported and a good set of cams.
Gary Cave thank you for your reply.
Excellent!
Are you able to bore an 883 to a 1250 or 1275? Your the only guy I've seen even bring that up that the cylinders can vary in angles.
Any 883 can be modified to 1250/1275! Search for Hammer Performance!
Stock 883 cylinders no. 883cc = 53ci 1250cc = 76ci
Do you still do machine work ? I’m looking to have my cylinders bored
At his point no I closed shop and moved out of Illinois to NC I and setup shop but it's going to be a while before I get going again thanks Gary
I got a 103 went 107, now I am due for replacement. I am not a big 110 fan but hey more is more. What options are there? I cant bore a 103 out to 110. And a stock 110 wont drop on cyl is to thick.
You can go with A 107 but bottom line is engine is just an air pump more in more out so your head to where the horse power is you can ultimately leave it A103 or making a while it a 107 port the heads more horsepower
What's the best brands of big bore kits?
He said better not to use a kit, bore your cylinders and just send him your pistons to match the bore to. Way better piston fit and he'll bore the Straight with the crank.

Is the stage 4 tire shredder a good kit to buy or just take you my bike?
Do yourself a favor.. take your bike to a reliable builder and have it done the right way bottom to top.. if your going to make power and go out reliably.. just have it done right the first time.
how about those kits that say they are matched
All the kits can say they're matched its the tolerance in which they are matched is what's important.
Any chance you’re near Houston Texas
We are in the middle of IL
Gary Cave anyway I can contact you ? How’s your current workload?
@@Ozzy2341please feel free to call me 309-694-9002 thanks Gary
Can you bore a 110 to 117 ?
I don't recommend it cylinders get to thin in my opinion
Awesome video on content thank you Gary for sharing it
Thanks
What’s wrong with a motor stick off the showroom? Truth is Harley Davidson motors are still 1950’s/1960’s technology with new technology built around it. Only recently has HD here in 2021 with its revolution max engine have they went high tech precision motors and parts putting them in the luxury Cadillac smooth ride and technology riders use to go to other manufacturers to get. The days of pushrods, rocker arms, primary chain rotating in oil, 3 hole oil changes are gone. HD is shifting to the new power plant sooner than later.
Buy S&S. You will be good
Dont really get your point of doing this on lathe when we have a specialy made boring bar which holds cylinder staright and tight , soo whatever direction cylinder liner is crooked bar/cutter will go perfectly true. On the other hand boring bar is better then your idea cus your cylinder in this fixture doesnt have a second/top of the cylinder support while cutting it as on borring bar. Rotating weight of cylinder push liner out of true no matter how good is your lathe . Nice video and shop advertisement but there is no way your idea is better then boring bar . Best regards
I thought exactly the same way you are thinking and your right in your thinking I spent years Using a dedicated quick way boring bar the problem You need to check deck heights. If you are familiar with using a boring bar you follow the original bore that's how you set them up in the fixture if your following the original bore and the deck heights are off your just boring it out the same exact crooked way. Either that or your just guessing at where the centre of the cylinder is and then boring it there's no way to know whether your correcting the bore or not if you set it up in a boring bar. In the lath your Able to find true centre and set it up exactly off of deck height it's a lot more work than using a boring bar. Thank you for your input I'm always trying to think and learn thanks Gary.
@@Vtwinheaddoctor whole world is using borring bars for reason, if they mot do their job as they should they wouldnt build them . People and shop will do it on lathe . Your idea is not bad but not as good as borring bar precision. If you still think im not right then you never worked on borring bar neither you seen one and how it works. Cylinder is clamped in solid heavy steel clamps / plates soo its not possible that cutter go off center .
@@grzegorzpalak6991
Gary, he is not saying the lathe goes off center, he is saying the lathe trues up a cylinder that is off center to beging with. But you seem to have it all figured out. I learn d a lot ng time ago that learning is a life long experience, glad to finally find someone who knows EVERYTHING and has no desire to consider another option . Good day

@@Vtwinheaddoctor I am glad that you've posted your info. I'm wanting to port and polish my head's and do a cam on my 103 when it's time. You'll do them for a 1000.00 that's springs and the rest of the fixings? Do you need to know the cams I'd be using to match springs up?
This is dumb, if i want a bigger motor i will buy a new bike
After watching this, I'm glad I never attempted to bore my own cylinders even though I have access to a lathe. Thanks for sharing.
How much do you charge to port heads on a 103? Running Andrews 26h's in a 16 Fxdb.
You're looking at roughly say budget a $1000 that would be to fully port and Polish bronze guides new one piece stainless steel black nitrite valves Springs retainers lock's keepers to match the your cans seals bagged assembled ready to ago.
A guy I know bought a 113 inch cylinder and piston kit for his twin cam from H-D and being an engineer, he measured it all. The pistons were OK but the cylinders were out-of-round and tapered from the base to the top. So he bought some oversize pistons and rebored the cylinders, selling me the original pistons to put in a set of over-bored CVO cylinders for my twin cam which, matched with some reworked heads and some other work/parts left me with a 130 + bhp and torque motor.
Man im glad I cam across your video . I was going to just buy a 107" kit for my Fxst 96b . I'll feel alot better knowing everything's trued up . And get the trued up performance gain ; )
@Gary so the right way to make sure the bore is correct is to bring the over size pistons in with the jugs for the bore/hone?
So if the liner is not straight in the cylinder, as you claim, then you bore perpendicular to the head/base gasket surface, won't you be boring through the liner crooked and causing thicker and thinner areas of liner inside the cylinder?
I would imagine that's why people use a boring bar...to bore parallel with the liner walls.
That's a very good question glad you asked 1st off it's Not as much as what you're thinking for example if its off 0.010 remember you only take half per side So if you set it up and you took a 0.010 cut you'd be taking 0.005 off of the backside of the bottom per say and the .005 off the top of the other side persei. Just remember that whenever you're boring a round object let's say you're taking a 100 thousands out you really only removing 50 thousands per side. Thanks again for the great question
I got a 07 cvo
How much to bore cylinders from 103 to 107
Id say that attachment is as TRU as it can be chucked up.
Exactly the video I was looking for

Do you use torque plates to bore those? Thank you for sharing.
I rough bore out without the torque plates I leave plenty to hone out and hone with torque plates and gaskest.
How much do you charge to build a motor
That all really depends on what you want to have done I'm more of a custom shop I builder to what you're wanting to get out of it thanks for the question Gary.
So are we looking for like .001 difference?
What is the max play you would say is acceptable .003?
I honestly have no idea but at what point did you tell that dude you would not do the conversion?
What state are you in
Move to NC
What’s your opinion on the s&s twin cam 88 big bore kit? I’m glad I watched this video before buying it. Do they machine the heads and jugs together? Or are they done separately like you mentioned in the vid?
Separately
