Self-Publishing with Dale I’m having a small issue, it says my cover is expected to be 12.988 by 9.250, and mine is 12.923 by 9.250. How do I fix that issue?
Success! Glad the video could help. And, yes, the pause button is a definite must-have. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I hope to hear more from you soon.
Thank you, Dale, for this most helpful tutorial. I really appreciate the time you took to explain the process, you hit on all the points that I needed. My book cover looks a lot better than it did with the KDP cover creator. Thanks again and happy writing!
Yeah, I'm able to zip right through it. I was just talking with Kelli last night and I'll be making the big leap to Photoshop in the very near future. Quite a bit of people in our space use PS, so I'm at a bit of a disadvantage sticking strictly to GIMP. What graphic design software do you use, Ahilan?
Thank you; your tutorials helped me learn how to design my book covers in GIMP. Now I have a question. Lately, more and more images on Pixabay are AI generated. I try to avoid them. Will it cause problems on KDP for me if I have elements in my cover that are AI generated?
That's tough to call since I only know what everyone else does at this point. I'd say if you know it's AI-generated, then disclose it. If you don't know if it is, reach out to the owner to verify. I believe you can still contact the image owners through Pixabay, so you should be able to do it that way.
Yes, I'm loving GIMP, but I have plans to pivot to Photoshop in the coming weeks. I'll continue to use GIMP until I get a better understanding of PS. As for what other tools I use to make and design the cover, that was it. I hired a cover designer to do that cover and am moderately happy with it. We'll see how it flushes out in the sales. Question, Gord: you do your own thumbnails, so what software are you using? What do you find is the best for creating images?
I'm a creature of habit, and continue to use Photoshop. I think there are many more affordable tools that edit Photoshop PSD files out there - like Photopeia (free online editor) and Affinity. In fact, Tim Knox loves Affinity. You should ask him about it!
I’m going to be making that great leap to Photoshop. It’s about time I do. Never heard of Affinity. I’ll just pony up the expenses. The only reason I stayed with GIMP is for how fast I can work with it. Back when I first started using it, I didn’t have the money. Now, I can certainly afford it.
Thank you for the information. I have a landscape illustration. I want to use it as a front and back cover. Do I have to cut the illustration into two parts and add them to the template separately?
Great video and great channel! Please help. I need to add an extra 0.125" (3.2 mm) of background along the top, bottom, and sides of my cover. I work in GIMP and don`t know how to do it. Every time I scale it, it scales back to previous dimensions. (even when I unchain it)
@@DaleLRoberts Yes, it is 6x9 template, 314,54 x 234,95 mm. They say I need to resize my front cover so that the image or background on the front cover extends far enough beyond the edge. Add extra0.125" (3.2mm) along the top, bottom, and sides of your cover. This will prevent manufacturing issues when cover is trimmed.
Have you called KDP Print through phone support? I've used them many times when I'm stumped. It's crazy, because every time I'm convinced they're doing it wrong, but they inevitably show me ONE small discrepancy I missed. haha Call them up, it'll save a ton of time!
@@DaleLRoberts Thank you Dale, I found the problem, I was using different template, just as you said. I downloaded the new one and this solved the problem. Thank you!
Yeah, you can, but you limit distribution if you're going for custom trim sizes. You'll have to account for the spine and the bleed. And, of course, double up the measurement (front and back cover).
Wonderful! I hope you find it useful. True story: this video nearly broke me. My software crashed yesterday and killed the first version. It's never done that before. The first version was so much better and more polished. But, if you find it useful, then that's all that matters!
Hi thanks, when opening the png cover template the resolution is not at the 300 dpi requested for the cover, did you up the resolution before saving the file, which sometimes changes the size of the cover
Do you have to do something in GIMP first to prepare it? When I drag the PNG over nothing happens. Do I need to hit File > Create first and set something up?
Hmmm, no, that should work. Try this: Click File, select "Open as Layers," find your file and select it. Then, click Open. You should be good to go then.
I do my eBooks first and order the eBook cover. Then I convert that to print by adding the spine and back...so we're doing things opposite ways. However, I might have a solution for you. Create a free account at Canva.com. Type eBook cover in the search. Upload your print cover using the buttons on the left. Click your cover to load it into your cover. Drag the corners to resize it to fit the area...just the front cover. Dont' try to include the back cover or spine. Just resize the front cover so it fits in the visible work space and download as JPG. Upload that to Amazon KDP. There are lots of videos about how to use Canva here on RUclips if you get stuck or you can reach out to my assistant, Ava, at heyyoava.com/contact-ava/. She can do that for you on the cheap.

If you can create a 2020 video using GIMP while creating a 2020 Lulu hardcover template, I'd appreciate it greatly. Thanks for your time and helpful video.
Let me see what I can do. I need to create a whole new channel for GIMP. haha I've been using it so long that a lot of things I do are second nature. Hey, while you wait, check out Davies Media Design on RUclips. He does EXCELLENT tutorials for GIMP.
@@DaleLRoberts will do, thanks! In the meantime, I'll be waiting for your upload :) Thanks again.
So how do you attach a barcode that you have purchased?
Just drag and drop the image onto the canvas. Just resize and arrange it into the spot on the bottom right corner of the back cover.
Pixels used?
I’m not sure what you’re asking.
@@DaleLRoberts I'm asking for the right pixel of the front cover. 1600 px x 2560 px?
What's the trim size of your book? Convert the inches to pixels.
@@DaleLRoberts ok thanks
It's my pleasure!
Gimp no cmyk problem or rgb different
Huh?
@@DaleLRoberts amazon kdp paperback cmyk or rgb?
@@3tiersdesign845 you can do either.
@@DaleLRoberts If my cover is RGB, won't the color change in printing?
For coloring book

👍
How does he know he has 232 page count?
J.D. Gordon Books how do I know? Because I have the interior already formatted.
@@DaleLRoberts Do you have a video that explains this? I cannot tell how many pages my paperback will be in KDP. It is currently in Kindle Create
J.D. Gordon Books you need to format the interior first. I have a free course for beginners at diypublishing.biz/free. It’ll walk you through how to format your interior.
