  • Wumei Quan (Ng Mui Kuen in Cantonese) is a style that attributes it's creation to the Shaolin nun who in southern Chinese folklore was one of the five survivors of the burning of the Shaolin Temple. In this three part series, I meet with Shane Francis, a disciple of the late Antony Wee from Singapore, to learn about this interesting and unique art. Today there are several diverse branches of this art, which can be found in Fujian province, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and New York.

    Great to see so many rare arts. I also like the different environments in which the practitioners practice in. Hong Kong rooftops, Northern China's house yards, and now Aussie back yards.

    And I was afraid you’d have trouble finding rare Kung Fu styles to hi light in Australia. This was interesting. I’m a Northern IMA guy, but my Sifu teaches a Taiwan line of Fujian Bai He, and the whip hand is a big part of the system. There’s something very similar in our Baguazhang’s monkey form, too. Keep up the good work, Will. Hopefully you can spread Mantis in Australia.

      Yea, there’s not too much beyond your generic Taiji and Wing Chun here in Perth, so I was surprised when this guy contacted me.

      Monkey Steals Peach I think I’ve heard about some Southern Mantis in Australia, and I know that Chen Xiaowang has spent a lot of time there, so there’s definitely Chen Taiji. Not sure how close any of that is to Perth, though.

      I have a friend who does Practical Method Taiji here in Perth. We plan to film some stuff together sometime soon.

      Monkey Steals Peach Great! Chen Zhonghua seems like a great teacher, and everyone who’s touched hands with him says he’s very skilled. I think the best Chen Taiji ended up in Beijing through Hong Junsheng and Feng Zhiqiang. And I sat that despite being a Chen Xiaowang/ Chen Bing lineage guy.

    great video as always! This looks a little bit like karate on the surface but after hearing more details did i realise it's quite different. Actuall a lot of souther styles are very karate-esque...
    How's Perth btw? what's it like there?

    At the foundation of my system, is Yau Hawk Tao Kung Fu, which is based in Perth, WA. The Grand Master is Sikung John McSwain, who inherited the system from Sikung Lam Ssi Tao. You should contact Sikung John - he's an extremely knowledgeable teacher :)

    Is the same system of Wumei that Master Yap Boh Heong practises? Also, where did this system originate? (By where, I mean province in China.)

    • @sseet
      @sseet 3 года назад

      This system is not the same as Master Yap's. The system is from Master Anthony Wee. According to the late Anthony Wee, he learnt the system from Great Grand Master of Tan Seow Koon who in turn leaned the art from Great Great Grand Master Tan Choon Koh. Tan Choon Koh is one of the two sons that was taught the art of Wumei from their mother, who was one of Wumei's (aka Ng Mui) disciples that lived in Fuzhou.

      @@sseet Oh, I see. Thank you so much for answering my comment, this really helps me. As a follow-up, I know it "originates" in the Southern Shaolin Temple, but it does it actually come from Fuzhou?

      @@jadenng7569 we are getting back into blurry history. Lots of histories are mentioned in CMA but sometimes the history is hard to track down. As mentioned earlier the information was from the late GM Anthony Wee. Like many system, GM Wee was passing on history based on what he was told or based on information he had in hand. The lineage information are referenced in his rare two books. I was fortunate enough to have a seat down meal with Sifu Francis and the late GM Anthony Wee himself, 3 months before his passing. During our discussion, GM Wee was in good mental state, clear in his thoughts and was open and forwarding with information regarding his WuMei lineage. Interesting GM Wee told me he knew
      GM Chee Kim Thong, who was Yap's Sigong.

      @@sseet I see. Many styles originate from a village or a county in a specific province, but I guess that we might never know where this system originated, hm? For now, I will assume it came from Fuzhou.

      @@jadenng7569 yes, for some style it gets complicated after certain time line. Just wondering what style do you practice? Maybe we can chat more privately. Do you have FB messenger or instagram ?

    That One Hater in the Comments: This wouldn't work in MMA!🤬
    (Its the most cliche(&cringe) thing you can say on a gung-fu video lol)
    Me: uhhhhh....not everyone who wants to defend themselves, wants to work in the MMA(where its more of a business, than an art). And most MMA fighters are only fit for an upcoming match. Too much pressure to meet a certain weight class, its no wonder they wanna let loose when that match is finally over with. Traditional arts is not a tournament-prep session, its a lifestyle. Being healthy and in shape, is the byproduct of daily training. Which facilitates longevity
    Yeah, Im projecting😊
    Traditional martial arts has never lost its honor, and respect, as far as Im concerned (despite what BudLight drinking American fans think lol)
    🎉Team Traditional Martial Arts, over hear🎉

    Actually, the legend of Yim Wing Chun and Wu mei (Ng Mui) in the Wing Chun system is just a promotional story written ion the 50's by a student of Yip Man. in other words it is not real.
    Not saying Wu Mei did not exist, though most likely she did exist, however, she was not the founder of Wing Chun actually had nothing to do with it at all.

    • @MonkeyStealsPeach
      @MonkeyStealsPeach  4 года назад +3

      Which is why I said it's folklore. Personally, I doubt Wumei even existed at all, and that all these styles are later creations
