Thanks Ron
we’re gonna get lit
Ron... always great videos. Please don't get sucked down the anger hole. The world is just an angry place lately. You do fine work, are well qualified, and your efforts are truly enjoyed and appreciated. Just a lot of folks searching for somebody to let some frustration out on.... These folks are actually the fourth and fifth of just this past WEEK that have referenced how angry "everyone is" now. Hang in there
Thanks Kevin. I assume you reference the one person commenting twice on this video and my response. I wasn't angry in my response. I actually thought for a good while before responding. Thanks for the encouragement though.
i have these same lights i bought on amazon on my layout,,,,,,work very well
I just received a set of these lights yesterday, except mine are 5000K, at the advice of another modeler. Very happy with this color temperature. Great video and very timely for my lights. Thanks, Ron!
I switched to 5,000k. They are much better.
Ordered the 12 pack of them for my layout room for general lighting well over a year ago. Was able to install them a few months ago, was difference between "night and day". Definitely like them better than the florescent and will be converting all fixtures in the basement to LED. Did it to the 2 fixtures over my work bench and it was a great improvement. For the work bench, I used the LED tubes that are plug and play into existing fixtures.
I replace the old fluorescent tubes in my fixtures with leds. I bought the ones not requiring a ballast as that is a major user of electricity so I removed the ballast. That way I just bought bulbs and didn’t have to replace the fixtures. Another plus to leds is that they don’t fade your scenery and rolling stock.
I recently read/saw a tip to try one kelvin value in one side of a 2 tube fixture and another k value in the parallel tube. Haven’t tried it yet but I still have a number of old fluorescent to replace.
Keep these great videos going. Love em.
Thanks for this video. I need light over my garage layout. 👍👍
[thank, you for you're great video]👍👍
Thanks Ron, your suggestions are always spot on, gonna look into these.
Thanks for suggesting this product. I installed the set I ordered a few weeks ago. Wow! It’s made a world of difference on my new layout.
Just installed 10 on my layout. Love them!
HELLO RON ITS IS RANDY AND I LIKE U VIDEO IS COOL THANKS RON
A very important part of the build. I used under kitchen cabinet strip lights which you can connect together and plug in. I enclosed them in plastic capping for a tidy finish.
Great looking layout with loads of details.Take care.
Your video is timely and helped me immensely. That’s a slick setup! Thanks Ron...👍
I just installed similar lights on my layout and love them.
Yes, I have five in my garage ceiling, good light and cheap to operate, and long lasting. Hope you had a good time in the Twin Cities...
Hi Ron, wish I’d seen this video 12 months ago, it would have saved some of the headaches you mention. Back to the drawing board and a demolition session for me. Thanks for a great video, keep em coming!
Very nice Ron. I’m going to check these out for sure
I recommend the 5,000 Kelvin ones. I just changed to them and they look much better.
@@RonsTrainsNThings ok thanks Ron. I’ll take your advice on that. I never know which to go with when it comes to LED’s
Ron,
Thanks for the 411 on the LED light fixtures. When I get to the rebuild phase of my RxR expansion these fixtures are something I'm looking towards.
~Jim
I love the lights what an easy way to light up your area
Great info looking forward to update leds sometimes fail but when they do it usually within a week
i like these lights. allso can find at home depot 4 ft are 20 buck each.thay work great on my layout.
thank you for detailed video
from Australia
Good update keep posting updates up
Wow..awesome led lights.. thanks for sharing and keep up the great work.. Lance
welcome back ron, we missed you!!!!
That's really nice lighting, and looks very even!
Great video Ron!
Muse
Thanks for the link to this video. This is the info I was looking for, I didn't know you could get them in different k ratings. Thanks
The Barina fixtures are great, easy to install, and come in a variety of color temps.
Like the ease of install
Will try getting them from your list.
Put in a couple of the 4000K tubes several days ago out of a six-pack. Almost perfect: remarkably bright and only very slightly pink, to my eye. Not at all like the electric blue 5000K LEDs that are out there. These just became my standard.
I love the new LED lighting instant light we replace 4 4ft florescent lighting in an unattached garage with 8ft led what a huge difference
Hi Ron great info. I had gotten 3 LED 4ft lights from Sam's and they are 5000k. Just to bright. I just ordered 1 pack of 6. Have to keep an eye out for 6 more I think.
Thanks, Chris
Just ordered 6 of the 4000 daylight. I’m surprised on the price! Was expecting to pay a lot more! Thanks Ron!!!
Thanks. I think I am going to replace older light fixtures.
Looking good Ron.
If you have seen the video George from Soundtraxx did he has painted the ceiling sky colour like the backscene as it makes the lighting look wood coloured otherwise.
LED lights are fantastic. I put a 4000 lumen panel light in my garage and I'd be surprised if the thing weighed more than seven or eight pounds.
These things are awesome. I bought 4 8 foot ones for my basement (not my layout) and they work great. Bright light Walmart haha. These look good on the video, do you like them so far? I may have to get more just for my layout.
Hey, Ron, l saw a listing on the Amazon Barrina T5 page for a version rated at 2200 lumens and 5000 degrees Kelvin which may be closer to a daylight color balance. I would guess that I will need about 6 to 8 of them. I also live in a small apartment so hardwiring these fixtures into the electric won't work though I have plenty of working outlets.
Personally, I switched to the 5k Kelvin and think they are perfect.
I would recommend Wago 221 connectors to replace those wire nuts, they're much safer and allow easy disconnection when necessary.
6500K is close from actual outside sunlight, which looks better on video
Hope I can found an equivalent LED light fitting in the UK, those lights look the business for lighting your railroad/railway layout...👌
Good vid! Just as I'm remodeling my bedroom/work area lol I do need better lighting over my airbrush booth
Ron - great vid. Looking on Amazon, some people complain that these lights don't last very long. What has your experience been?
Well, I've had them in my layout and in my utility room 3 years and so far so good, no failures.
Hi Ron! Thanks for the informative video. I just ordered an 8-pack of these lights to try them out. Question for you, since you've worked with the lights and the installation brackets--I have very low head clearance in my basement, and am wondering if the brackets can be installed on the side of a joist instead of on the bottom of a joist. Or, would this severely limit the amount of light shining downward? If side-mounting doesn't work, I guess I could screw a piece of wood to the side of the joist, and that, in turn, would be the mounting surface for the LED fixture.
They cannot be installed on the side of the joists, but when installed on the bottom, the lights fit tightly against the joists. There is no wasted room and their total clearance is 1.5".
Useful tutorial. On a slightly unrelated matter - what is the difference in height between your upper and lower levels? (I'm planning a multi-level layout). Thanks.
How did you get the 2x4s that you attached the lights to, to stay up on the ceiling? Is there a stud you screwed them too or what did you use?
Do these lights come in various lengths?
This is just a light video viewing at only 11:04.
Are they dimmable?
does the lighting fixture get installed close to the valence? does it extend further into the room than the layout below it's lighting?
I installed my with about 1.5" separation between it and where the valance will be.
HI Ron I Live on Hayling Island in the UK and watch all your vids. With regards to the Barrina lights you reccomended the 6000 and said you were going to try the 4000 a bit warmer. Did you try them? My Layout is 4.2M x 2.4M and have just built an overhead frame suspended from the ceiling 1.3M above the layout to take the Barrina lights and have today ordered 4 of the 6000 ones 4FT from Amazon, be here tomorrow (came in a 6 pack so I have 2 extra in case I need more, but looking at your lighting I think the 4 should do it).
I am spacing them evenly along the layout front to back, my frame is about 500mm smaller all round than the layout so it sits central but extended the suspended frame 400mm forward of the layout front edge to mount 2 daylight floods. I am hoping the combination of downlighting and front floods will look right. If you have tried he softer lights I may end up changing them if you recommend them and my 6000 end up looking too bright. Trouble with lights is, you never really know until you press the switch what you are going to get! Thanks for your Vids and help.
I’ve had about sixteen of these fixtures, lighting my layout and the room, for more than a year. Super easy to install, and significantly brighter than the haphazardly installed fluorescent light fixtures they replaced. Highly recommended.
4000 Kelvin is indeed a very good light for layouts, very close to sunshine. Unfortunately, most big box stores only carry 2700K and 5500K. 2700K is a yellow glow LED (Soft White) that's much like classic incandescent bulbs. 5500K is a stark bluish, common in institutional and plant lighting. 5500K is often annoying in a home setting but good for keeping you awake & focused at work. Thus some like it for the home office & kitchen. 6500 is downright dystopian!
Sadly, there's no industry standard for the common name used for a particular Kelvin. So 4000K can be called anything from Warm White to Daylight. I've seen 6500K called "Daylight". Don't go by the name. Plus among different manufacturers & different model numbers, the same Kelvin light can easily appear different. Our eyes are very discerning.
Another factor usually ignored or not listed is the CRI or Color Rendering Index (0-100). Cheaper, lesser quality LED bulbs/fixtures won't list it. Better ones will. 80-90 is OK, but above 90 gives the absolute best color rendering (like sunshine).
Since Kelvin & CRI significantly affect how we perceive colors, we'll want the same exact brand/model LED over our layout & our workbench/ desk/ paint area.
I replaced these today with 5,000 Kelvin ones and they look perfect. Like you say, going to carry them across the layout and the workbench.
@@RonsTrainsNThings I'm glad it worked out. It seems that even lighting has to be more complicated today. Such is the price for more & better choices.
Your extension looks great! I can't wait until I get to that. I'm still at basement walls, ceilings, doors and HVAC. Have a nice day!
I was a little disappointed because I thought you were going to be installing lights physically on your layout (street light, crossing guard lights. Etc).
I like your choice of overhead lighting, especially the ease of installation.
laughing yes i had tried my hand with simple plumping ok broke the PVC pipe going into the floor of the basement did call in a plumber to fix this and yes we got a washing machine back and done have to tear out the wall to access the plumbing for it now then designed to do a larger reno and moving the washer and dryer to the main floor NO did hire the piping out too and the electrical too
i didnt see a j box
It was in the ceiling hidden behind the 2x4.
Is it just me or does it strike other viewers strange? You can daisy chain up to 8 but you can only purchase these LEDs in packages of 6.
On Amazon you can get them in sets of 6 or 8.
Wire nuts? Seriously? Look into using lever lock connectors like wago. Easier and safer.
Here in Australia it’s illegal to do any electrical work on mains power if you don’t have a license. I wouldn’t do it myself and don’t recommend anyone else does...
This is not Australia or do we live under dystopian authoritarian government of a former penal colony. DIY is totally legal in the US and this is basic level man work to install lights etc. Are you calling Ron Stupid?
I wired my entire house and don’t have a license. Guess what, I am still alive. It’s really not that complicated.
@@IMRROcom I never would call Ron stupid. We do not have a dystopian authoritarian government, we have a Westminster parliamentary system of democracy. Yes we were a former penal colony but at least we didn’t have slavery. I was simply making a point about safety.
@@benellerbusch3074 where would you like your medal sent?
As you were offended by my comments I have unsubscribed from your channel. Enjoy the rest of your hobby career.
Sorry Ron I normally like your videos but this one is irresponsible in suggesting that non licensed people can work safely with mains power. Sorry but it’s a thumbs down for me.
Firstly, irresponsible is a pretty offensive term. Secondly, your power is 230V, ours is 110V. Major difference. Thirdly, where I live there is no such law. Fourthly, I've been doing household wiring in construction for more than 30 years. Finally, I said in the video if you don't know what you are doing consult a local electrician.
@@RonsTrainsNThings I meant no offence but you need to understand that the videos you post are not limited to an American audience. Yes our laws are very different and from our perspective it could be construed as dangerous. I have copped a lot of criticism for posting this comment because it appears Americans don’t like to be informed on situations outside their own country. Fair enough if you are allowed to do it yourself. We aren’t and that’s not going to change. Just be aware of your audience that doesn’t reside in the USA. Our voltage is 240v 60h ..deadly power in the wrong hands.
