Writing to you with my newly replaced keyboard. Thank you so much for this guide. Have to admit, that was the hardest pc/laptop replacement I've ever done. Two things I learnt. The 5 screws on the motherboard must be glued or something.use a slightly larger/fitting screwdriver so the don't get rounded like one of mine. The final boss (the 66 screws) are super tiny, make sure you have a really small screwdriver, much smaller than any other!
I followed this video successfully. I found it helpful to jot down each of the 15 or so steps as I disassembled, so I could reverse the order when reassembling. The trickiest task for me was learning how to disconnect the ribbon cables. The video does not show how to do this and I did not realize at first that the connectors have a hinged piece to flip up before removing the cable. Furthermore the cables attaching the two blue USB boards to the motherboard are not the hinged type, and as far as I could tell just have to be yanked out and forced back in. I was worried I would break them. I found that I did not need to disconnect the single black and gray wires at the motherboard - I was again not familiar with that type of connector and the video did not show how to disconnect them. So instead, after removing the MB screws I freed the motherboard and just folded it forward so I could access the keyboard screws. (For those tiny screws a spectacle repair screwdriver worked for me.) Thanks for taking the trouble to make the video.
thank you, this is the first keyboard replacement video for this kind of integrated keyboard. This keyboard design is the price for the unibody design of the X1C
Excellent. Love to see the 3rd Gen Yoga version differences if any. I'll dive in but always nice to have specific bearings if I can find them beforehand.
Thank you. This took some time but I was able to succeed to replace both the keyboard and the track point. I agree with the comments here. The ribbon cables require that you first flip UP the back part of the connectors to release the cable.
Thanks for the video but i think that removing that cable 11:50 was bit unnecessary. You seemed to have hard time inserting back that little connector into the upper part. I successfuly failed by breaking that connector, and it seems this was related to the touchpad. So i got my keyboard working but the touchbar is KO now 😅. Is there a chance i could fix that or get a replacement cable?
Luckily the T series are much easier to swap the keyboards on, I do love the X1 series (specifically the gen 5) though. That said, reminds me I need to swap the keyboard on my daily driver TP25, which has a broken backlight.
Yeah it seems to be a reasonably well built laptop quality wise, the owner of this one loves them too for their thin and lightweight profile. They are just a pain to replace the keyboard on is all, upgrading the SSD and Wi-Fi etc looks to be as easy as any other laptop though.
@@NearFarMedia Beware on the wifi though, Lenovo have a firmware lockout that will prevent booting if a card is installed that's not on a very limited whitelist.
Great Video . Please let me know if I can replace my X1 Carbon 3rd Gen Motherboard with i5-5 Gen processor BY another x1 Carbon 3rd Gen Motherboard with i7-5 gen processor ?? basically upgrading processor here. Is it a straight forward replacement? Thanks
I believe it was sourced on either ebay or aliexpress. The owner of the laptop sourced it so I'm not 100% sure but it was one of the larger online marketplaces.
it's on the back of the motherboard. Once you remove the motherboard. flip it over and look towards the side of the heat sink and you'll see the familiar circle battery with its litte cable
Excellent video. May I just ask how long would it take Joe Average who has little expertise like you to install the keyboard and trackpad buttons? Is it worthwhile to undertake or one to leave for the pros?
Hello i have asking you my pc loptop Lenovo Thinkpad x1 carbon I don't know how to uninstall old apps its because i bought ut 2nd hand plss let me know how tp remove application. I was trying to uninstall but nothing happened the apps are still shown.
Thanks for the video. Might I ask have you ever done keyboard replacement for X1 Extreme Gen1? Both that one and X1C have integrated keyboard. I want to do the replacement myself, cannot send it in as I live in a SEA country while guarantee service is in US .. I'm thinking about ordering one from Aliexpress and following the official manual instruction.
I haven't done a replacement on that model, but I would expect it is a similar procedure. As long as you are careful, it shouldn't be too hard I think.
Thanks for the video. Very well captured. Mine has a circuit problem. Typing I, for example, inputs ,ki8 and E is cde3. Is it possible to open the keyboard and clean it to solve the issue?
@@NearFarMedia I just noticed my smallest philips screwdriver in my toolbox is 1.7 mm, I think I need 1.5 mm or 1.2 mm to work on the keyboard. Thanks dude, your tutorial is very helpful!
Hello man! Was trying to get an idea how the fingerprint sensor and its ribbon cable looks like because mine looks like it's already toast. Is yours still working?
Sorry, this laptop is a friends so I don't have access to it anymore. His fingerprint scanner is still working, but I aren't able to take any photos or open the laptop again. Sorry I can't help more than that!
I cant see you detaching the keyboard flex, and reattaching it... did i miss something in the video? i saw u unclip the locking mechanism, but didnt see you reattach it ?
Reminds me of a dentist I went to back in the day who was also a licensed proctologist. I told him I needed a back molar pulled. He told me to drop my pants and bend over. Nope! See ya!
@@NearFarMedia thanks! great tutorial mate. I am just following this. Those tiny keyboard screws, what size are they? None of the philips sizes seem to work

I just replaced my keyboard by watching this video step by step. Thank you so much!!!
pro tip: you can watch series on kaldroStream. I've been using them for watching a lot of movies during the lockdown.
@Louis Kane Yea, have been using Kaldrostream for years myself :)

Yeah, it's a bit of a pain but not the worst laptop I've worked on.
At least replacing other parts like the SSD and Wi-Fi is easy.

Brilliant thank you. A mongrel job made easy
Leave it to Lenovo to put 65 fricken microscopic screws interested their stupid keyboard. Holy hell that sucked, but thanks for the helpful vid!!
Brilliant job! Where is the cmos battery? Wish I could do it myself. Thank you.
Did I hear 66 screws for the keyboard?
Had to replace m,y touchpad, this machine has to be the easiest one to work on hands down !
Thank you for your video!

@@gregschultheis No I hadn't still. Thinking of risking it with a french layout on AliEx. Seems to be identical, will give it a go.

it's on the back of the motherboard. Once you remove the motherboard. flip it over and look towards the side of the heat sink and you'll see the familiar circle battery with its litte cable
wow amazing, very appreciated
Thank you. What a pain compared to Dell laptops

It shouldn't be too hard I think. I didn't look too closely at the trackpad when I replaced the keyboard, but it should be relatively simple.

May I ask, what kind of screwdriver did you use? Size and type please and thank you.
I don't remember the size, but a standard set of jewelers screwdrivers will have the correct size.
What screwdiver size did you use to open the 60 small screws on the keyboard?
I used the smallest size I have and still too big.

Unfortunately I have no idea as I've never worked on a 4th gen sorry.
I'm pretty sure I will never be doing this myself.

I think it is size 00, but if you have a set of 'jewellers' or micro screwdrivers, you'll be sure to have the correct size.
Hi, could you send the link where you bought the keyboard? Thank you
Did you find out where to buy a replacement? I am looking also
EBay
Anyone have weird erratic. keyboard function gen 1 x1 carbon .
Wait well your saved photos be deleted?
If you don't damage the motherboard, you won't lose any data. It's a good idea to back everything up just to be safe though.
Where did you buy the keyboard?
This one was just purchased from ebay.
