    A note for anyone who gets into using Leica M mount or M39 rangefinder lenses on mirrorless cameras (incl Fuji-X):
    1) the adapter is much thinner so the lens sits nicely further back and...
    2) you can also get an adjusting 'helical' adapter that gives you more focus throw to get much closer than the 1 meter minimal focus distance.

    This may be a really stupid question, but does anyone know how to configure the back dial on the x pro 1 so that I can control the shutter speed? I can't seem to figure it out.

    Hello I've just come across your page and I recently purchased the Fuji X-T1 and wondered if you had any advice on some manual lenses to add to my kit bag and what I would need to buy (converters etc).
    I also would appreciate your advice - I have the standard lens (18-55mm) plus the 35mm lens. But thought about the 23mm and / or 56mm for some gym photography.
    Is it worth getting the 23mm (even for a daily lens) or is it better to skip that and just fork out for the 56mm? thank you in advance!

    I use one of those Biotar lenses on a 5DII. With the adaptor it won't focus to infinity but it's a fantastic lens for macro use.

    Great video! I just got into manual lenses on my XT1. I have one question for you... Does your adapter lock onto the camera mount? I got a cheap adapter and when ever I focus the adapter turns as if I'm dismounting the lens.....
    Thanks

    • @AnarchicImage
      @AnarchicImage  9 лет назад

      Hi Jaytee sorry for the delayed response. Yes, my adapter does lock onto the mounut and doesn't move when focusing. The M42 mount does have 2 screws that allow you to rotate the internal thread so the DoF markings are always on top and if these are not tight then the lens would rotate when focusing but so long as they are screwed up properly there shouldn't be a problem. Mine was a cheapo one off ebay btw!

    I have just come across your channel, Brilliant!!, I realise I am a few years out. I use a Super Takumar 55mm f/2, wow what a lens. I use this on an old canon 1dmk3, yes I know it looks a bit odd, but the images are simply amazing. This lens cost me £22and looking forward to trying it on an X-pro 1 or 2 in the near future. Great channel

    Hey Matt, I first watched this video a year ago. Just reviewed it having picked up a second-hand X-Pro1 body to go with my X-E2. Something I've found out which I am absolutely delighted about; if you set the X-pro1 to "Shoot without lens" and select the appropriate focal length for your legacy lens, then the frame on the optical viewfinder adjusts to the correct field of view! Amazing! (So, if I was shooting with my 28mm Konica Hexanon, I'd just set the "shoot without lens" function to 28mm in the menu, and hey presto, a usable OVF).
    I also found out that the X-pro uses the same batteries as the X-E2, so my bagful of batteries are interchangeable! Happy bunny.

      How is your experience with the X-E1? I am getting one used for300$ just to try out vintage lenses with focus peaking. Would that be an enjoyable experience?

    • @TarrelScot
      @TarrelScot 7 лет назад

      I have the X-E2. I understand the EVF is better than on the X-E1, and the X-E2 may have received more recent firmware updates than the X-E1. Haven't used an X-E1 but I can't imagine it's very different from the X-E2. X-E2 is a fantastic camera IMO. Small and light. Excellent focus-peaking; you can alter the strength and the colour of the peaks. As Matt says, it's more limited on the X-Pro1. It also has a split-image rangefinder option. I used mine the other day with an old Helios 135mm f/2.8 (M42 screw thread) to shoot a music gig in fairly low light. f/2.8 + ISO6400. No problem!

    Thanks a lot for your video! I have FF camera (Canon 6D) and several lenses. I'm thinking to buying fuji mirrorless as a second camera. And I would like to use my FF lenses on fuji x system. The focal length of my lenses will increase on aps-c body. And what about maximum aperture? It will also increase?

    • @AnarchicImage
      @AnarchicImage  8 лет назад +2

      Hi Viktor yes you will need to multiply the aperture by the crop factor to get the correct depth of field. The light gathering ability of the lens is however, not affected. The other alternative is to use a speedbooster which maintains original focal length, and increases light gathering by one stop from original.

    As I am using with my XPro1 & XE1 with my Nikkor Manual focus lenses, and also along with a 42mm threaded Carl Zeiss Jena Lenses, and I have obtained a Kodak Retina Reflex Schneider lenses via with an adapter as I can use the F/stop ring that I have total FULL aperture control on the Nikon, Kodak, and 42mm thread CZ Jena lenses. So WHY? should I buy expensive $$$$ lenses for the Fuji line as I am really getting way more BETTER results from lenses that were designed from 50 to 70 years that were the best of the line in photography. I see from the comments that people are also using adapters, and getting good results with Focusing Peaking - Any comments in what I am using???

    Matt - great clip. My father-in-law recently lent me his late father's old Leica Summicron f2 from the 1950s which I've been using with the the Fuji M Mount adapter on the X-Pro 1 for the last couple of weeks. I absolutely love it - I actually prefer it to my two modern Fuji lenses (14mm f2.8 and 35mm f1.4).

    just a note: today (/10/2015) the xt-1 and xt-10 have this coloured focus peaking feature!- yes right out of the box, + a focus assist feature ( like the range_finder focus you discussed ) but in these bodies the viewfinder (oled) is so big they use the right half of it to magnify the focus 'box' or to run the split image in ; so you can both compose & focus at the same time, bit like how you use the Leica m series of cameras.

      +andy van Hi Andy, since posting this video I also got myself an XT1 and I love all the focus assist modes you get. Absolutely brilliant.The X Pro 1 works ok most of the time but gets tricky with white or shiny objects.

    Hi Matt-
    Great video. I've been using a variety of lenses on both the X-Pro 1 and the XT-1. I have gotten great results with the Tamron Adaptall - 2 SP lenses. 90mm mac is superb. I have a 35-210 that has a bit of fringing but can deliver very sharp images. I've been toying with the idea of adding a Minolta MD 50mm macro3.5 with the 1:1 extension tube. I have a plain MD 50mm 1.7 and love the results.

      Hi Joseph I have a friend who swears by the Adaptall lenses. The 90mm mac is probably a great portrait option for the Fuji X cameras. Not experimented much with Minolta glass though. Will have to get some and have a play!

    I've been toying with upgrade ideas - I'm not overly invested in my current system and the X-Pro1 is now stonkingly affordable (£599 with the 18mm and 23mm lenses free) so I'm considering shifting away from DSLR entirely.
    This has been very useful as I also love shooting film with my old Pentax cameras - I was delighted to see that there was a FX-PK adapter available, as well as the other major manufacturers.
    Would you still recommend the X-Pro1, given its age? (although as I type this I realise that I wouldn't think twice about buying a Canon 5DMk3, which is a similar age)

    Hi Matt, thanks for posting this. I got into old MF lenses a few of years ago and was thoroughly bitten by the bug. There is something decidedly meditative and ethereal about shooting with them, it slows me down, makes me compose more carefully and there is such a bigger feeling of involvement in the process than using AF lenses.
    Camera used: Fuji X-M1 and occasionally Canon 7D.
    Sources: charity shops, car boot sales and e-bay.
    Favourites so far: Takumar 50mm F1.4, Helios 44 F2 (Russian copy of your Biotar), Helios 44-7 F2, Zeiss Jena Sonnar 135 F3.5, Porst 55mm F1.2 and most recently Leitz Summaron 35mm F3.5 the latter being Leica M mount (the others being either M42 or Pentax k) It has been great fun and I'm now pretty much fixed on using these old MF lenses. I have also been using a few new MF lenses, favourites: Voigtlander Nokton 40mm F1.4, Samyang 12mm NCS (Fuji x mount) and the Samyang 85mm F1.4
    It might be worth noting that the adapter for old rangefinder lenses is much thinner than those huge clumpy M42 adapters therefore lower profile.
    If you (or anyone else) have any questions, please ask.

    • @AnarchicImage
      @AnarchicImage  8 лет назад

      Thanks +BaddaBigBoom! Yeah the m42 mounts are a little clunky. Sounds like you have a pretty sweet set up of lenses there dude. I've always been tempted by the Samyang stuff but haven't bitten the bullet yet. Went to see them at the Photography show in March and they're a great bunch of people and the lenses feel amazing in the hand. Like you I think the 12 and the 85 would be the perfect lenses for me :)

    Hey there. I went and bought the Kipon EOS - FX 0.7 reducer (like the metabones speed adapter that you mention). I don't know if you've ever used one and I can't find ANYTHING online that mirrors my experience but I believe that I may be doing something wrong when connecting my lenses up to it because the fit is RUBBISH! It just will not hold. Do you know if there is some sepcial trick involved because no matter which lens I try (Zeiss / Canon / Sigma) the damned things will NOT stay on the mount. Honestly for $400 i am looking at a complete dog. Help? Thanks - good video by the way.

    Could you give some info on the adapter you're using?

    • @BaddaBigBoom
      @BaddaBigBoom 8 лет назад

      +Steffen Hokland From my experience, they're pretty generic M42/Fuji -X available on e-bay for about 13 euros, the screws that allow you to rotate the lens so the info is the right way up are easy to strip so I'd recommend buying one for each lens you get. Some of them DO NOT have the rotating inner sleeve so look at the photo, ALSO avoid ones from China or you will wait a month for delivery!
      You can also get M42 to Canon/Sony/Panasonic etc.

    I'm a new XT1 owner using the Metabone speedbooster with the Nikon 60mm F2.8D lens on it. I was in shock of just how sharp that lens was on it. I also have the 24-70 F2.8G on it. Works fine with the system but just adds so much weight.

      Hi Chevelle yes big pro zooms are a bit unwieldy on these little bodies. I tried my 80-200 2.8 on the X Pro 1 and the image quality was amazing but it looked ridiculous! Old Primes are the way forward. Just picked up a Nikon AF Nikkor Micro 105 2.8 which is perfect for portraits!

      Matt the bonus is that it's f3.5 right through to 210mm. The downside is it is masively heavy, all metal with lots of glass but beautifully made. Also check out your other Olympus lenses the 50mm is a complete joy.

    • @AnarchicImage
      @AnarchicImage  9 лет назад

      Haha yeah just been researching it actually. It may not be much lighter than my Nikon 80-200 2.8. I've got an adapter coming for that tomorrow as a stop gap, but I want to fins some smaller lighter glass too. It does look like an incredible lens though, especially for the money. I might get one for the OM-1 anyway. You're right about Olympus glass. I have the Zuiko 50mm 1.8 and it's fantastic. Might see what else I can find and try some of the rest of the range out. I hear really great stuff about the 135mm 2.8.

    Anyone here thinking about shooting Samyang/Venus optics lenses, one tip from me:if there is an Sony A/Nikon/canon mount available, buy it in that mount! except wobble, if your adapter is bad, adaptingthese to your fuji or any other mirrorless should give you the exact same quality. the point here is, that your lens now universally fits on any mirrorless with a cheap adapter. You can use a very sharp lens like the samyang on a fullframe, with a2x crop or even on a pentax Q7 with its 4.5 cropfactor. pretty cool thing.

    Hey Matt, excellent video. I'm just contemplating the X-pro1 and two-lens bundle and wondered about using some of my M42 lenses with it, so absolutely relevant!
    I'd recommend you have a look at some old Soviet glass. I have a Helios 58mm f/2 which makes a great portrait lens on an APS-C camera, with lovely bokeh. Also the Tair 3A 300mm f/4 which I used on the Canon 5D mk2 for photographing the eclipse the other day. The Helios cost me £12 off Ebay, attached to an old Zenit E with a defunct shutter. The camera sits on the shelf and makes a nice conversation piece but the lens is in regular use on the 5D.
    I agree with your point on manual focussing on a DSLR. Live view helps, but I imagine the focus-peaking must make a real difference. By the way, the X-E2 has an electronic split-image focusing system!

    • @AnarchicImage

      Matt Widgery Photography Ended up going for the X-E2 which I'm enjoying so far with the 18-55 kit lens. Waiting on delivery of an adapter to try the M42 lenses on it. I'm very impressed with the manual focusing on the X-E2 so far, so really looking forward to trying out the manual lenses with it. Hey Matt, have you heard about the Samyang / Rokinon lenses ?? They are manual lenses with Fuji X mount with aperture ring. Now I'm will buy the 12mm F2.0 (20mm Equivalent) and the 85mm f1.4 (127mm Equiv) Base on all the videos and comments on RUclips, Google+, Flickr are great lenses and super sharp. The price is around US$300 and you can see those lenses under different brands. The only cons is the manual focus, but since you like me already are using a lens adapter, you know that. They just released this week a 135mm f2.0, (Equivalent to a 200mm f2.0!!!) but a little more pricey (US$ 549)

      Hi Juan yes the lenses are branded Samyang here in the UK. They have a great range of very sharp lenses. They also make cine versions of most of their line up too with t stops instead of f stops and stepless aperture control which look pretty sweet. I met the importers at the Photography Show in Birmingham last month and was very impressed by their people too.

      I think I read somewhere that the Metabones Speed Booster won't give any more than f1. What that means for a f0.95 lens I don't know! Presumably a black hole opens up between the lens and sensor and you end up taking a photograph of the 11th dimension. Or at least I'm pretty sure that's what happens. Anyone else? :)

      Sounds like a hoot to me, I've always wondered how to give my photos that extra dimension... Heard anything about what it does to the depth of field?

    MG! seventeen mins. of rhetoric and you haven't said anything! What a waste of time. Why don't you move on from the obvious [we are not morons] and tell us something real technical, like for instance: in the old cameras isn't a fact in manual focusing it is essential the aperture stays wide open [f/1.4, f/2.8 or whatever] since this is where the DOF is more critical, but you wanted to shoot say at f/5.6, so you set this on the lense, then as you pressed the shutter the diaphragm automatically closes down to f/5.6? Now my question [however stupid that may be] is: say I want via an adapter fit an old Nikkor lens to a M4/3 camera, as I understand you have to keep it wide open in order for the camera to accept it [I may be wrong, please enlight me] but what about if I wanted to shoot at f/5.6? How does it work?
    These are issues that we really NEED to know!
