I believe that Americans don't have passports because traveling is too expensive. When you live from paycheck to paycheck, you don't have money for travel. At least that is why I didn't travel until I was in my 60s. Even camping was too expensive!
That, and the fact that just getting the passport now involves a $200-300 dollars, and most people haven't got that lying around, it's goes into the gas tank, or to childcare so they can work, or to groceries-- however little it buys these days. Forget having the $ to purchase airfare and lodging, even if you're frugal!
Totally understand your comments. Everything is getting more expensive. I am lucky, I am single with not a lot of "overhead". I put money away, here and there for a big trip. I suppose it's what our individual priorities are...is it material possessions, the beautiful house and fancy car or is it other things. I have done 5 big European trips in my lifetime and I wouldn't trade those experiences for anything! Thanks Rick Steves for that motivation, so many years ago to fuel my love for travel.
Of course, most of us couldn't or can't travel. But we can read and watch Rick's TV adventures. There's no reason to believe that our view of America is the only information we need to define the world.
The question: "Will you accept the results of the next or current election?" If that answer is no or if he/she equivocates. They are off my list as people I can appreciate.
I have an education thanks to scholarship and working while in to collage. As far as travel, the US have many wonderful peoples and communities to begin travel experiences to learn more about your fellow Americans. Having traveled a bit outside the states, I find coming home the best feeling. My parents had six children. My Dad did his travels during WWII and then never left home again having seen way too much. He loved Italy and spoke of it often. Many do not have the opportunity to travel and to condemn those without a passport as being lacking is a bit condescending. I prefer to .talk with others, share their stories and experiences even if it is life in a same town their whole life. Our view can be expanded by taking the time to learn about your neighbors. I had the opportunity to know the people around my parents home and community for 60 plus years. Who can say that anymore. Most people are always on the go and don’t know a soul who lives near them. Value is where you place it. I’m not sure I appreciate the direction of this presentation . I will listen again and see if my gut response is any different. I’ve learned to trust my instincts.
This reminds me of most progressive discussions, and count me among the progressives. To find out what the “other side” wants and needs , invite them into your discussion and ask them! Keep it civil and listen to them. It doesn’t help to just talk among ourselves and not be able to get to an answer. Perhaps Rick should travel to the Midwest and gain some insight into their culture like he does traveling to other countries.
You know we're in trouble when Rick Steves feels compelled to lecture on fascism 😬

Ancient indigenous cultures have been predicting it for centuries. A lot of cycles are coming together all at once. We are still in the period marked by the Mayan calendar that predicted the end of time. But, keep in mind that we don't really know what that means.
@stillherenow500 Refreshing to see an intelligent response on a You Tube chat board. Thank you.
The 1st chill for me was when Reagan won the presidency.

more relevant than ever after this election. Please pray for our country
Thanks, Rick. Wonderful that you are ok. From a retired history teacher - education is the way!
Unfortunately, this is preaching to the choir- the ones who need to know this aren’t going to listen and wouldn’t get it anyway
I mention this often, that having persuasive dialog with friends and family who have a right leaning view is more valuable than speaking to a crowd of a thousand progressives
As someone with a liberal arts education, I very much appreciate your comment about your practical history degree. It helps to actually know something about the world other than money, doesn't it?
The American people have spoken. Fascism is their clear choice. God help them all.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you.
All true and happening before our eyes.
Thank you for your candor and insight that may for many be a lesson in humility and the danger of things being proposed politically by the head of the maga movement.
This was great. Thank you.
thank you Rick
I have to leave the States. SSB fixed income does NOT go far now; tariffs will downgrade our already frugal groc budget which consists of shopping at Dollar Tree, Dollar General & Groc Outlet, all retailers who do business with China imports & will be hit hardest. Safeway's Just for You has good sales with eggs occasionally at $2.99, cheese at $1.99, butter at $3.99 (Groc Outlet = $4.29). I've started watching RUclips videos on cheap retirement towns... At 73 yrs YOUNG, my heart is broken by the division trump has caused & the damage to be wrought over next 4 yrs. I'm a Marine's ex-wife, who got classified 4F when I tried to join Air National Guard in 80s for pin in knee...😢 Thank you for this.
What Steve says right after 10:25 about what is at stake is probably the most important takeaway from this speech.
Fantastic
Love his travel books, from one that is not as well traveled as some others you learn so much & his writing gives such good history while making one feel as though your traveling there also
God help us all.
Belief systems have in insidious way of overcoming truth.
Not everyone can afford to travel outside the US much less inside the US.
You choose your life. There's no excuse for small minded ignorance.
You can travel thru books and travel shows.
There are more Americans travelling these days than did, say, 75 years ago. Budget travel has made it more available.
I believe that Americans don't have passports because traveling is too expensive. When you live from paycheck to paycheck, you don't have money for travel. At least that is why I didn't travel until I was in my 60s. Even camping was too expensive!
Understood
Americans don’t have 2 months of vacation that Europeans do.
Winners accept loss; losers avoid it.
Losers deny . . .
Trump will lose. But he already has his militias standing by. 😢
Travel teaches you that people all over the world are just like us and that many, many, are kind, even in nations that are our supposed enemies
The question: "Will you accept the results of the next or current election?" If that answer is no or if he/she equivocates. They are off my list as people I can appreciate.
🙏
We need to get back the Fairness Doctrine!
We've been seeing "only I can fix it" in America since the first elections.
Rick, you weren’t the only American who had a copy of Mein Kampf as your bedside reading. 😊
Not me! A certain presidential candidate.😊
@@cindymaceda2999 The difference is Trump worshipped it.
Now I know it's end times, Rick Steves taking us on a tour of fascism. Holy hell
Fascism seems to be our future.
Given Germany's behavior in response to the genocide in Gaza, I'd say that they haven't learned much.
👍
The Seattle Weekly and The Stranger great times for Seattle.
Glad you got through surgery, Amen
You'd think the ones with kids would be thinking of the future!
What a sad country we've become! Half a brain is apparently too generous!
Thanks for attempting to educate Americans. Clearly they had no interest in making an informed decision. 😢
We just elected our first fascist in America
46:54 Hearing and understanding Trump supporters, taking them seriously and addressing their concerns would help prevent fascism in America.
this is certainly a sobering video
Wonder if we’ll make it through this.
"Both sides" journalism is tragically out of date and invalid in a post-truth world.
💙
This reminds me of most progressive discussions, and count me among the progressives. To find out what the “other side” wants and needs , invite them into your discussion and ask them! Keep it civil and listen to them. It doesn’t help to just talk among ourselves and not be able to get to an answer. Perhaps Rick should travel to the Midwest and gain some insight into their culture like he does traveling to other countries.
