    I realize that wednesday is a huge hit right now, but even with that happening and everybody appreciating this show, I don't think many people have picked up on just how good of an actor Jenna Ortega is, AND, how difficult it is to play a character like wednesday.... Even with all the attention and all the accolades she's getting for her performance, I don't think people have fully grasped exactly HOW FLAWLESSLY she portrays this character, and how unbelievable she is as an actor. This is one of the most under-rated performances of ALL TIME. I do believe people will catch up and pick up on all the nuances before much longer because this show IS so popular and there's so many people commnenting on it...

    • @bouboulroz
      @bouboulroz Год назад +74

      Wednesday Addams is probably one of the toughest characters to play. All of her emotions have to be subtle enough to not feel out of character, but the viewer still needs to be able to read them. It's a fine balance that you need to find and stay on constantly. I was impressed by how easy Jenna Ortega made it look, particularly during the scenes where other characters say something she doesn't expect, and you can see her processing it internally.

    • @bryanharrison3889
      @bryanharrison3889 Год назад +41

      @@bouboulroz Yeah, they could not have cast a better actor for this role... They also couldn't have cast a better role for enid, which is the opposite of wednesday, and just as difficult to play. A character like that is difficult because its so easy to OVER act the excitement and boundless energy, but emma myers plays the part just as good as jenna plays wednesday. It almost sucks that she's a supporting character because inevitably she won't get quite as much recognition because its not enid's show, its wednesdays. But with that said, I am pleasantly surprised at how much buzz emma herself is getting. The two not only do their individual parts so well, they have great screen chemistry. The casting of two flawless actors for two top-tier characters was just as difficult as the performances of the actors for sure.... I can't believe how well they did, and I was already aware of both and knew both had great skill. Speaking of enid, she NAILS that almost "crazy eyed happy" look, which is just as hard as jenna having to do those super subtle emotional expressions. These girls are top notch, work well together, and hopefully, this is just the beginning, and I'd like to see them dual-cast in future stuff. Like, idk, an action spy comedy or a legit horror, or maybe some straight comedy or straight up drama/suspense/thrillers, because these two girls together are certified gold and their talents are unchartable.

    • @bryanharrison3889
      @bryanharrison3889 Год назад +13

      @@the.truth.doctor I mentioned this in a comment to someone else, but emma myers is equally good and her character is equally difficult to play. Its almost shameful that she's a supporting actor because she'll likely get somewhat less accolades because of that, but as i said in the other comment i'm pleasantly surprised that emma is getting quite a bit of fanfare. Enid is super difficult. Its HARD to play high energy like that and sell it without overselling it. And that "I just drank 5 diet pepsis and ate a bag of pixie sticks then a half pan of brownies" crazy eyed glassy look she gets, but never TOO much is absolute perfection. She sells it so perfectly and I'd like to see them work together on other projects because their chemistry is as good as their acting.

    For someone as transactional and antisocial as Wednesday, her relationship with Enid is fascinating, the two are more or less complete opposites, yet the chemistry between the two are fantastic, and it is worth noting and examining the fact that Wednesday acts differently towards Enid then she does anyone else, I mean Enid is able to call out Wednesday directly and Wednesday actually takes the advice to heart and works to right the wrong, in this case appologising to Thing.

    Xavier assuming that Wednesday comment on shooting a bow was sarcasm and proceeding to try to teach basic archery to someone who is a much better archer. Then attempting to make her the center of the class's attention with his spider trick which obviously annoyed her. ( even Thornhill called him out on it ) His attempts to impress Wednesday seem rooted in what impresses other girls. The poor fool.
    Eugene being the only one in an extra-circular activity who doesn't condescend to Wednesday. The result being that Wednesday actually shows an interest in beekeeping and may have actually made a friend.
    Wednesday giving the most transactional reason for joining the black cats with Enid wanting that reason to be transformational.

    People tend to express their emotions openly and usually instinctively. It comes naturally and without much control to smile or cry or show distain. Wednesday is the same BUT in reverse. She has the same feelings and desires as everyone else but she instinctively represses them rather then openly showing them. It's as natural for her to not smile or laugh as it is for us to smile or laugh. I can actually relate to this though not to her extreme.
    That in mind her emotional responses are almost like reading tells in poker players body language. A subtle head tilt or eyebrow raise for Wednesday can often speak volumes. I find it super fun to watch and try to decipher what's going on in her head.
    One example being that Wednesady typically only blinks when she is in uncomfortable situations. Yes that's right if you pay attention she rarely ever blinks. In fact most of her emotional tells come from her eyes and because she rarely blinks her eyes do most of the talking.
    Loving your reactions btw.

    I love your series so far! On the topic of how Wednesday is starting to trust + how you pointed out how she and Enid both held onto the flag at the end, was that there were several times when Enid gave Wednesday casual physical touches (arm over the shoulder or bumping arms as they walk). It's small, but as a character who is known to dislike closeness/intimacy, the act of not rejecting those casual touches sticks out. I have several close friends who are touch repulsed and cannot stand physical touch most days- however, if they are in a positive headspace will be ok with things like fist bumps. It makes those moments more important to me IMO. I also like the more subtle expressions that the show uses with Wednesday- like the calculating pause before she shows her teacher the Nightshades emblem. It fits her character to not be overly expressive, yet they still convey emotion.

    I loved this series and am looking forward to your take. The one point I would contest is that you said Weems assumes the killer isn't someone from the school. I would take it as she's protecting the school at all costs. Both in the sense of protecting her students, and the school's reputation. I would guess that she thinks it could be a student, but would rather handle the matter in house if it is. And if its not a student, she'd rather not attract unnecessary negative attention to the school. It's why she fakes Rowan being alive and discredits Wednesday's claims of there being a monster and pushes the bear attack narrative. Claims of a monster whether its from the school or not, is bad for her, the school, and the students. She's not making assumptions, she's being protective.

    I really like how you insisted on the fact that Wednesday is not acting like this because she feels superior to everyone else (if I may add nor even is it out of arrogance). Personally, I feel so connected to Wednesday in the sense that she's a social recluse because she knows that society, even though she's actually harmless, will reject her. For someone like Wednesday, (and myself in a way, since I have always been one of those people engrossed in their studies, have always been the nerd, poly-tongues, polymaths, the pantomath try outs), we know that even if we're trying to give genuine advice that would save someone from a difficult situation, they will NOT listen to us. So, we kind of opt out of the societal system once and for all. The society happens outside of us, as if in a different realm, and we happen outside of it. Consequently, feeling emotions for this entity, that is society, would be a little awkward for us, since we don't exist for the society, and the society does not exist for us. So, yes, all interactions would be transactional. And, if anyone is wondering if our lot still feels like they want to belong somewhere, or with someone, I'd say that as the doctor so accurately put it that we "want to belong, but we don't know where".
    Apparently the world needs a whole load of Enids with her accepting, warm, and kind nature for this to happen.
    To whoever that might read that extra long comment:
    This is, of course, just my opinion and there're NO intentions behind it to generalise.

    I would like to hear more about the probable ASD in Wednesday. even her dancing looks like stim dancing to me.I think it's very empowering for many people to see their autistic traits they've been rejected for seen as so darkly adorable in Wednesday's character. This show really makes me miss the more authentic Wednesday phases of my younger self. It's interesting you seem critical of her therapist, because the therapy scenes rand very true to my own experiences with therapy. I also have trouble not seeing therapists as "adversaries" when you feel like (probably some of it me projecting, but what it feels like) the therapist os out to prove this feeling different thing is just a facade and/or an illusion and inside you are just like everyone else and if your insights about yourself don't lign up with my theories about all humans I'm going to dismiss them and then therapy becomes a battle ground for your own uniqueness.

      The dance moves are mostly from Fosse. Who was into supermodel beautiful people moving aggressivly or strangely...so it's a legit dance style, technically. It's just not...super popular cause the moves are strange. But yeah some of the moves Wednesday chose to use are exact replicas of those dance moves. I know that some people have done side by side comparisons on tiktok and stuff. You can also just see examples of the face style on tiktok and I assume RUclips as well.

    One of the things with Wednesday Adams is that she has a very strong sense of justice. So when she said her greatest fear was "doing something terrible" she is being self aware, that she is capable of some dark and terrible things and so she fears that she can violate her own sense of justice. An example of good terrible and unjust terrible is the piranha's in the swimming pool. That was terrible, but it was good terrible because it was in service to justice, those boys had abused her brother. Bad terrible would be her destroying the school, because that would be unjust. Her sense of justice may also be a reason she went after the boy at the fair, to save him, because to let him die as she prophesied, would be unjust, a bad terrible. It is also may play a role in her continued search for him (his body) afterwards, even though he tried to kill her, to allow people to think he is still alive when she knows he is dead is itself unjust. Her sense of justice also plays a role in her writing, as in writing mystery novels, which are also about justice. No one is the villain in their own story, and so that is Wednesdays fear, becoming the villain of her own story.

    Thank you so much for touching on the subject of neurodivergence (and also those ridiculous "5 signs you have adhd" articles etc) - it frustrates me to no end to see these things being thrown around and thrust upon people who are perceived as "different" when people can be different for so many different reasons. When I was a child I had the term "Asperger's Syndrome" thrown at me by the adults...then I grew up, turned into an adult myself and tossed that phrase aside because it turned out to be inaccurate and more damaging than anything else. I would rather if people had seen me as the person I really was, rather than throwing generalisations at me that didn't ultimately fit, because it messed with my head a lot.

    A lot of us neurodivergent people prefer this term because the alternative is often words like weirdoes, freaks or even the r-word. Neurodivergent is not so much a thing to put people into boxes, as it is a way to *not* decide on who in society gets to be "normal" hence why it more so refers to the way brain neurons interact.

    I get what you're saying about neurodivergence. But I'm pretty certain Wednesday is deliberately written as Autistic. Tim Burton is self diagnosed Autistic so I don't think any of these "hints" are accidental - he knows enough about neurodivergence to recognise it in him self. Wednesdays core strengths and weakness in the show all have a root in Autistic traits and the plot is driven by her sense of justice. It also makes sense why she doesn't yield to the social pressure to conform, it doesn't occur to her that she should pretend she didn't see what she saw. She knows what she was and that's that.
    There's a line in a later episode that really cements it for me. "it’s not my fault I can’t decipher your emotional morse code".

    I think part of the reason that she showed her Dorm mother the photo off the bat is that she feels like the dorm mother accepts Wednesday for how she is. If you think back to the introduction the mother gives Wednesday a black dahlia and tells her that she likes to pick flowers that match the girls. Wednesday seemed intrigued and seemed to really appreciate the sentiment. I think that made her feel safe with her.

    Definitely on my calendar now, I love your insight on this series. Wednesday Addams is such an important character to me. I grew up watching the 90s films and because of my obsession with those as a kid my parents also introduced me to the 60s sitcom. I love this family and Wednesday especially because I was an outcast and frankly I still am. I always wished to be like her, not caring about what other people think. I am neurodiverse and only got my diagnosis two years ago at the age of 22. I am trans and also on the aroace spec. And Wednesday has just been a character I found comfort in, Jenna really did an amazing job and I cannot wait to watch you break down the rest of the episodes because so far your analysis of her character has been so comforting if that makes sense. I know a younger me would've been so happy to have had this representation, especially as latinx, I really hope they continue it. Thank you!

    The thing that amazed me about Jenna Ortega's portrayal of Wednesday Addams, is how much she can show Wednesday's inner thoughts and feelings with nothing more than her eyes. The deadpan stares that cut away anytime she hears something that threatens to put a crack in her inner defenses. The quick look away while she processes the threat and repairs the damage, then right back to the stare. It actually made me wonder if her eye movement was something written in as dialogue in the script, if it was coached by Tim Burton, or if it was just Ortega's interpretation. Whatever the case, it was brilliant. In one interview I saw before I watched it, Jenna said Tim wanted it so the viewer never saw Wednesday blink, and if she did blink it was to signify that something had moved her WAY out of her comfort zone. She said she got really good at going a really long time without blinking. So I watched the whole series to see if I ever saw her blink in a normal scene, and she never does

    I took intensive group therapy. For the most part, it was pretty great, but when you're talking about the therapist making assumptions and redirecting the conversation towards those assumptions, I was reminded of the time that the therapists kept pushing me and pushing me into admitting to feeling something I was just not feeling just because people who could relate, felt those things. No, their stories are different than mine, I can relate to them in many ways and I get why they could relate to me but I simply did NOT feel what they assumed I should be feeling. I'm still kind of salty about it since I never got to address how I felt pressured and almost gaslighted by the therapists.

    Wednesday is true to herself, she's brutally honest but the more I'm watching video here and there and been thinking snout her lr this series Ge more I think she's such a touching character. So Manx aspects are relatable... in way or fascinating...

    The thing you say about how neurodivergent's people's brain works is very interesting! I'm autistic myself and what I noticed about Wednesday was surprising to me. I could "see" or rather "sense" her emotions thousand times better than the average person. It seemed so much clearer to me to notice what was going on with her, although she hardly smiled etc. It was also much easier to empathise with her for me. When other people cry, smile and so on it is indeed rather unsettling and overwhelming.

It's like every single person is actually different, and then you're just categorizing a certain group of people and saying that these are the people that are different from these other people..." Thank you for this. My daughter may be on the autism spectrum, and if she tests as such that will be "good" if it opens up funding sources to help her, but I am not entirely comfortable with putting people in boxes. Especially since I share a number of characteristics associated with autism but probably would not be considered to be on the spectrum. The attention being given to ASD these days is helpful, I think, because it highlights that not everyone's mind operates according to societal expectations; but if it just sets up a different set of expectations for those deemed to belong in the ASD box, I'm not sure how much it's helping those "misfits" either inside or outside the box.

    This brings me back to the Autism idea - feeling unsettled by seeing other people’s emotions, and maybe not knowing what they mean, or how to respond. Something I’ve also wondered is if Wednesday is masking. She never has meltdowns, which is fascinating. She doesn’t overreact. But she does seem to be fascinated with other people. The odd thing is she doesn’t mask to fit in, but rather to hide from her own emotions. Is that a thing? Autistic behaviour where you mask from yourself? This was a fun episode. I love Thing so much!
