Hey, love your episodes. But I need to ask. You said in this episode and in previous ones that Wednesday is not afraid of rejection, because she actually rejects other people herself. But I am wondering, could it not be a mechanism? Like rejecting people first to make sure she will not offer to other people the opportunity to reject her. Just a refelction 😅 Anyway, I really like your channel and the idea of talking about these topic based on tv series. You are great 🎉

    • @christopherpoet458
      @christopherpoet458 Год назад +13

@@mitchellsmith4690 I can see where your point is coming from, but counterpoint - we have changed. A lot.
The closest comparison I can see anyone making is that like animals, we have basic survival instincts. Put under the right stress, individually and as a whole, people would get fairly brutal. But that is also kinda the catch. It is situational. Those instincts don't really kick in until we are trapped in a situation where logic and other methods of problem solving have failed. A point when any other social acceptable option has been exhausted. Granted, this mainly applies to just about anyone who understands the basics of what is moraly justifiable vs what is not at large. We have, as we see it, become more civilized than our ancestors and while we technically still are Apex Predators, our bases of logic and action is no longer defined by this.
I think a better explanation to the OG comment can easily be answered in a different way; We rairly see ourselves as the villien. More often than not, when you have committed to an action that can cause any amount of harm to anyone, be that physical or emotional, most of the time we do not feel we are in the wrong. Granted, this is not 100% consistent in that we can learn to see where we have made our mistakes and how we can be procieved as the one doing wrong, but with things that lean into the extreme like Murder, Gennocide, War, Arsin, etc. The people who commit these actions will not see themselves as the person in the wrong. At least, not until after. Some do, but some also never will. Just as there are people out there who are literally unable to comprehend how killing anyone is moraly unjustifiable in most cases. They will always see their situation as justifiable.
This really ties into a topic delved into this video when she talks about Xavior's judgement of Wednesday basing her story on her visions. He sees her as the one who is over-thinking the situation when he himself has done the same thing she has (based his belief of what is or is not real on loose facts/material). He thinks he is in the right. She thinks she is in the right. It just so happens in this situation though she IS in fact correct. But Xavior is technically unaware of it.

While there certainly was some collateral emotional damage from the statue bombing. It makes sense that this is "fair" from Wednesday's point of view. Mandatory volunteer work to help people who many of whom regard you with disdain is bad enough. But then Weems made her play her cello which Wednesday has put a lot of emotion and work in with the band to play an uplifting melody. ( Really Weems should have seen that was a bad idea ) I think that's just too much for the transactional based Wednesday to not be taking action in return. That the statue was of a guy who massacred outcasts in the forgotten past was just the cherry on top.

A few days ago I saw someone point out it's probably because Bianca reminded Wedneaday of her mother.
Morticia was queen of the Dark Prom Enid discribed Bianca as closest thing to royalty in the school.
Morticia was captain of the fencing club and Bianca does seem to be at the top of the club if not the captain.

This is why I often tell people its damaging to dehumanize abusers and think of them as monsters, because when we do that we are shutting out the possibility that someone we know could be abusive and to any sign of that, or hell, the possibility that we could have abusive or toxic behaviors to examine and work on.

However I wonder if Vincent has experience like Wednesday did, where Wednesday went after Rowan to save him from the hyde, Rowan for his own reasons attacked Wednesday then was killed by the hyde, I do wonder if this vision was self fulfilling , but he changed things so the vision he saw did not happen. The worst part of Xavier's advice happens when he talks about the prophecy drawing, done by Rowan's mom, he never voices a doubt about the meaning of the prophecy, he in fact leans into others thoughts of what the prophecy means.

You can expect them to come true, but the psychic is almost always missing some context of what they see, or the prediction is *technically* true, but only from a labored interpretation. The hubris of "knowing" the future will often lead the psychic to a worse outcome.

I'm so happy I found this channel thanks to Wednesday, I've been watching all Arcane videos too, insta subscribe for me! I specially love this episode because it finally gave me the answer to something I was wondering for years. When you were talking about the dehumanizing thing I remembered my favorite anime (also my confort media for years, even though it makes me cry every single time). I never understood why she (the villain) would treat her (character A) so badly given the context and how character A looks. I understood that the villain didn't see her as a person but I never really understood why, now I do. Villain was happy for the characters existence, right until she discovered character A is not what/who she wanted, so she dehumanized her even though she looks like someone she loves (which is why I never understood how could she treat her so poorly).
Anyway, I saw in an Arcane video (I think it was the live) that you said you were open to react to anime, where can I leave my suggestion for the anime I was talking about? Is a comment in RUclips okey? It's not very well known I think, so I understand if you wouldn't want to react to it. But I've always wanted for an expert like you to talk about it, this anime doesn't shy away from hard topics like child abuse or how can grief can change a person after the lose of their child and many more. I identified a lot with the protagonist when I was younger and it definitely helped me with my mental health, it gave me hope that I could feel better, that I could be happy and love myself one day, and it worked! In days when I feel exceptionally bad I like to watch it again to remember myself how far I came. Anyway rant over, sorry for the long comment 😅

Seeing Wednesday reaction to that, to the monster and her interaction with Goody is so interested.
As well as how she sees Joseph Crackstone, cuz when she sees her face she is scared.
Her discussion after that with Wrems as how it covers up shows a bit (imo) how society or some community does work...
Also, her relationship with Enid is so genuine
They are so different and express their feeling so differently, yet they are completing each other so well.
I love when Wednesday says 'if he breaks your heart, I'll nail gun his".
Edit : your part about belief system is so interesting 🤩
I'm enjoying so much your videos... thank you

This is why we left this scene in there! She’s beginning to attach to people outside of her family and those who show the same type of behaviors as her. I’d say she is transforming in that way. Keep in mind that she did say “if he does this bad thing, I will do this other bad thing”. Still transactional, but the care she once explicitly gave to her family and those who remind her of her family she’s now expanding!

I really loved your small "dehumanising" intermission. I have a BA in journalism (one of my exam pieces was an interview with a survivor from the mass slaughters in Sierra Leone), a BA in Genocide Studies and a MA in Contemporary History with a focus on dictatorships & ideology. If there was one thing that came up frequently it was the reason why people could participate in so many awful things, whether it was 'simply' standing by, betraying protectors (of Jews f.e.)/working for the aggressor, or truly actively taking part in the Genocide by killing. The psyche behind people's actions/choices is what has always fascinated me. If university wasn't so frigging expensive (not to mention time consuming, working is fun and necessary too after all 😉) I might have looked into an extra program back then. Luckily you're here! Just found your channel after bingewatching Wednesday the day after it was released (huuuge fan of the 90s movie, played Wednesday in a school play lol). Subscribed immediately.

Xavier's problem is his approach, not necessarily the messages he wants to deliver.
Like with the archery in the previous episode. What he explained wasn't wrong and while he hadn't mastered the bow yet, he was on his way to getting better, he knows the theoretical part and can explain it. His mistake was his approach: it would have played out differently if he had initiated with "Are you interested? Want me to explain?" or even better, "What do you know about archery and how much experience do you have?"
Same with the visions. He has some expertise and experience, has visions in his dreams himself, and knows a lot through his father. Mansplaining is usually not just about assuming a girl or woman doesn't know anything, but actually not knowing much either or having a very basic understanding. He's not the only one who says that Wednesday has to be careful and that it's easy to misinterpret visions. At least two more people tell her this and even she assumes it when Rowan tells her about his mother's vision (his mother thought Wednesday will bring destruction, Wednesday believes the vision means the opposite).
So, again, technically, his advice isn't wrong but his approach is. It would have come across a lot differently if he had opened with something like, "I know a lot about visions and their risk through my father. He gave me some sound advice about the dangers of visions." He's certainly also not completely wrong about Wednesday having her own perception of the world and people around her and interpreting the visions based on that. There is a risk of hubris and you don't break through that by lording your conclusion over others. If he had explained how he came to his opinion instead of stating it and, even better, had offered alternative solutions, that would have been constructive criticism. One doesn't have to be an edgy teen with supernatural powers to instinctively reject the "well, you're doing it wrong" approach. A reasonable suggestion would have been, "I have theoretical experience and some first-hand experience with my dreams and I've been in the area for a while. Maybe I can provide a different angle."
It's frustrating to watch how Xavier continuously sabotages himself but that's an awkward teen for you. Also, it kinda makes sense, he barely knows her, it would be odd if he managed to hit her right buttons every time he approached her.

    • @wyterabitt2149

He was quite literally there to explain archery to anyone who wanted to join, who had a problem with that scene?! She also didn't engage, so he explained and let her try just to get on with it as it was his job there.
He gave a warning about the visions, what she does with it is up to her. Whining about fictional mansplaining, and having the ego and arrogance to think you should be scripting another humans way of communicating if it isn't good enough, it just hilarious.

The way they showed how easily people were judged back when we were pilgrims is a well played perspective. From what I’ve learned in school back then a lot of people were judged and burned to death for “practicing witchcraft” when it was probably natural medicines. While some of the people that were tried and sentenced to death were probably doing bad things, others were innocent and using natural remedies to help. The way Crackstone and the village treated the outcasts was the same thing. They were being their natural selves and everyone else saw it as demons walking amongst them to hurt them. If any of this is incorrect I’m so sorry. You can let me know if I got anything wrong in the comments.

You know. Wednesday torching the statue actually makes more sense to me know taking what you've said about her being transnational into account. She just had a vision which put her in the shoes ofGoody Addams where Crackstone burned her whole family. So she burns Crackstone. The effects on other people around aren't the issue. From her point of view she's not doing it to them, and it's not her fault if they don't like it.

Hello. I don’t know if you noticed this… but during the scene with Wednesday and Enid but when Enid brings up the incident on the statue Wednesday only makes a side eye look and evades by bringing up her date. I thought I was a great way of seeing Wednesday grow and evolve. To the Weens she is all about making the truth known but she doesn’t to Enid because to me it seems she doesn’t want to disappoint her. And possibly more… guilt maybe? Thought this could be another of her transactional relationships at work. What do you think?

Brilliant analysis as usual! I really enjoyed the part u explained about religion and people belief. Also the part about dehumanization.
It's so true because if only we all see and view our so called enemies as humans who undergo a mirage of similar feelings like us then there would be world peace
It's because several people don't hence its easy for them to commit many evil acts.
I wish u could make those your comments on a world stage so many people can benefit from it.
Do unto others what u wish/ want to be done onto u. Let's be more tolerant and understanding of other people belief/ culture/ opinion.

Funny thing is that Sheriff recognise the photo, he knows who the monster is. But he did something about it? He try to jail the responsible and try to figure out why? No, he let more people die needlessly to protect someone, and then when things would turn ugly and the dirty laundry would come out, he prefer to arrest an innocent and put all the weight of his inaction on Wednesday, Jericho is pretty rotten, the the core.

I like the way how you describe religion and how its being used by Crackstone. I would like to add a more couple of things thoug, sometimes when a person becomes a leader in religion their motive is to gain power an manipulate others. Crackstone IMO is a textbook case of this phenomenon because of his other traits that make him close to a narcissistic psychopath, who is also a sadist.

As someone who attempts to show genuine affection in ways similar to Wednesday and who gets completely rejected for it, it's both heartwarming and discouraging seeing acceptance come in a fictional form. It's only in fiction that people like us get acceptance and friendship. Maybe that's why those of us who are neurodivergent tend to get so heavily into media- it's a vicarious form of acceptance.
