A perfect summary. That moment with "Hammond of Texas" in the fighter craft shouting "Yeeha!" sums him up perfectly. They were -nearly- all great leaders, but one definitely stood out over the rest and I think all 5 are ranked correctly here.

@@matthewhutt544 Agreed. One of the top things Weir did that should put her as one of the best SGC commanders is that she called out Kinsley for being a Quisling. Especially as the cowarly fool tried to flee Earth when Annubis came calling. Even after Annubis tried to send a NUKE through the gate, he firmly held the opinion that the G'ouald could be placated if Earth shut down and buried all stargates and just gave the snakes whatever they wanted, and the threat they posed was, at best, exaggerated. And everything would just be hunkie dory if the SGC did things his way, against all evidence. The only other commander to call out Kinsley, while in command, was Hammond. O'Neill did call out Kinsley, on a repeated basis, and on camera, but the lout got himself a snake in his head and disappeared, presumably out an airlock, before he could do it in the chair.
Commenting before watching here ^^ I've always said, Hammond is about the only military guy I would follow into combat. He's got sense, humanity and trust in his officers. I wouldn't feel expendable and I would know that he would try everything to bring his guys home. Best commander.
Would be a nice way to span a bridge between old fans and new ones AND more important: It would bring her career to a well earned end. Starting as a captain, working herself up threw generals ranks. Her promotion to "full bird" collonel was IMO nearly as overdue as the one to lieutenant collonel and she commanded the defense when the ZPM-upgraded Hive attacked. That alone should be enough to get her finaly promoted. I want to see her as SGC commander or as a commander of a BC 304 Battlegroup / Taskforce. Both positions as a Major General or Lieutenant General.
Well, she was made General and given SGC after the Ori war ended, according to Stargate: Resistance (the game that shut down after a year). I'm not sure how much outside the three shows, the movies and Origins is considered canon, though; the game may have had her as General at the same time she was given command of the George Hammond prior to SGU's start. Since she was in command of Atlantis before and was temporarily in charge of SCG at the end of SGA, it would make sense for her to be considered for the command again if General Landry isn't still there.
I think you got the order right. Nice overview. I miss this series. A couple of remarks... the script and characters were great. You don't hear much about the cinematography in this series but it was well done, very well done. Last but not least was the theme. For those of you musicians out there, look up the opening theme songs arrangement. Somewhat complicated. Compared to the tv series on the air today it's like Mozart compared to boys in the band or some other poorly designed musical auto tuned junk with three block chords.
To be fair, "Creek Mountain" in the film was Cheyenne Mountain. The film just called it by a different name. So Gen. West's complex really wasn't in a different mountain
My picks: 5 Bauer, not a good fit; 4: General Landry, along with Mitchell (both not a good pick after having Hammond and O’Neill who best portrayed their characters; 3: Dr Weir, I thought she was a good leader and did an excellent job in Atlantis; 2:Col Jack O’Neill, Kind of like Hammond with good leadership; 1 Major General George Hammond, they could not of picked a better leader.
You are unfair to Landry imo. He’s a good 3 or 2 on par with Weir or even O’neill. He did a good job leading the SGC. He’s no hammond but he was the next best thing short of O’neill himsef.
@@KalashVodka175 Ok, after rewatching the series with him in it, I would put him above Weir: 3. I was not a fan of the first Dr Weir. Yes he was not Hammond and no one could could fill his shoes as well as he did.
While it may have been 50% Anderson and 50% Jack, the level of DGAF radiating off Jack's time in command was legendary. He came off like the main character from Office Space, just seeing how long he could dick around before getting reassigned. It honestly kind of works if you think of it that way.
100% true. Stargate was one of the highest order of knowledge seeding. It was heavily funded and influenced by the Air Force. Just wait until full disclosure, we're in for a ride...
@@boydsmith2732 That's more or less what I meant. I understand that they could hardly find anyone like Hammond (RIP), but why they put someone like that there is a mystery to me.
I don't get this sentiment. Having just watched the last 2 seasons, I thought Landry was a decent successor to Hammond. He was tough with the ori when need be and had his people's backs like you'd expect a good leader to.
@@boydsmith2732 I did watch it all, and while 9 and 10 aren't the best of the show, they're much better than people give them credit for. Especially people who haven't watched them in years
Pity the sarcophagus was just a prop. Great story line for Hammond with plenty of listening by tptb to chart the best arc. I miss him every time I watch .
Hammond is one of the greatest military leaders in all of TV - he's intelligent, compassionate and most importantly trusts and listens to his people. Trusting those you lead is one of the greatest qualities a leader can have.
In my career i have received a lot of formal instruction on leadership and the amount that could be learned by observing general hammond is astounding If i had one favorite clip of Hammond its at the beginning of season 7 at the start of the off world X-302 mission when O'Neill wont start the mission until he heres "good luck and godspeed"
Jack was funny as a commander. To quote Hammond : "It seems your counterpart is just as good at following orders as you are, Colonel". The responsibility of running an entire base was just too much for him, at the beginning. Too many things to micro manage, like the perfect potato for the cantina etc. And now he had to give orders instead of just following them (on occasion). I mean he did write his resignation. But in the end, he pulled through.
While I may have some thoughts on some of the rankings in this list, the one that I indisputably agree with is Davis as G. Hammond at #1. He was, in my mind, the real heart and soul of the show. 💖
Hammond had no idea what he was stepping into when he commanded recon/exploratory teams. But he had the organization adapting on the fly while constantly dealing with hostiles and maintaining relations with other planets and agencies. That's pretty epic.
One of my favorite Landry scenes is in his first episode. "You know, the thing that's hardest to get used to around here is how good everybody is at their job. The fact is, I like yelling at people! Never get the damn chance."
This list is spot on. Don as Hammond was incredible, and I know I'm not the only one who likes to think of Hammond as a spiritual successor to Major Briggs from Twin Peaks, who was as kind and caring a man as any. I'm still sad that he's not with us anymore.
If you take into account Weir's command of Atlantis, she would be number 2 for sure, I loved Weir nearly as much as Hammond. Jack would be number 3 if he was there longer, but Hank was good.
Gen Hammond summed up everything the SGC and the SG teams stood for. A fair man but firm and not one who just blindly followed orders but allowed his gut/instincts to guide his decision making so much so that SG1 often were given a degree of leeway within the regulations they had to follow because he knew they were on the frontline dealing with situations as they arose.
1. Hammond 2. Landry 3. O'Neill 4. Weir 5. Bauer Hammond and Landry are easily #1 equally in leadership skills, just Hammond doesn't have weird quirks like Landry which makes me favor him more. I have a lot of issues with O'Neill of ever being a colonel much less a general (regardless of star). I prefer the Kurt Russell O'Neil because he was much more believable and contrary to what Richard Dean Anderson said about the character, Kurt's portrayal wasn't that strict and is actually a lot softer than than a lot of officers I worked for 20 years with. I didn't care for a lot of RDA's comedy routines because most of it was insubordinate and unbecoming of an officer, especially a colonel however I liked him in SGU which is how I always thought he should be and not everyone's buddy. I liked the original Weir because she went toe-to-toe with Kinsey and her voice wasn't whiney and crackly like second Weir, nothing against the actress but I just can't stand her voice. Bauer seemed like a last-minute afterthought. His character should've been introduced in a much earlier episode with some interaction as a squared away officer before finding out he's corrupt, much better storytelling that way. It would've been a better segue for Harry Maybourne to be this character because in the episode he helped Sam with the alien beachhead at SGC looked like they were doing this with his character but they turned him into a classic mustache-twirling NID badguy instead.
I completely agree with you that RDA’s O’Neill did not give off a very professional vibe. Another issue I have with him is the fact that he gave off an air of annoyance and disinterest with what he was doing, and rarely showed and/or projected excitement/a positive vibe. I did not like that at all.
@@yazanmowed During my 20 years in the Navy I never saw an officer act like O'Neill but I saw plenty of junior enlisted act like that. After they move into leadership positions they get in line with the mission of the command and keep their comments to themselves instead of spouting off like O'Neill did all the time which Hammond should've nipped in the bud like I've seen happen in real life.
FWIW, when the show had General Ryan on for a cameo in Season 4 he's said to have remarked that he knew plenty of Jack O'Neills in the real-world Air Force.
@@GateWorldDotNet Yep, I remember that episode and most of them wouldn't be able to make a career out of it either in real life. An officer with O'Neill's record wouldn't make it past captain because the selection board would review his record and if he has any infractions, he won't pickup major and after two attempts at major he will be kicked out, simple as that. I understand the TV show isn't nowhere near real life, I'm just pointing out where TV shows take creative license for dramatic effect.
Mostly agree. Obviously Hammond is number one! I would has switched Weir and O'neil. Not that either did a bad job. I just felt like Wier showed why she was there with the negotiations. Jack tries his best, but kind of struggles. As he said he doesn't know how to "be the man". He clearly missed the action and struggled not to focus on his old team before everything else. Character wise it makes sense that he would find a good replacement and step down after only one year. At least the character does see action again ;).
"Everyone's too good at there jobs. I like yelling at people, Colonel. No one around here gives me the damned chance." - General Landry - (More or less).😁
I was watching an old episode of McGuyver, and believe it or not, Don S. Davis played a truck driver while RAD tried to stop an explosion. Interesting how paths cross and re-cross!
I would have to say that Elizabeth really sits as an equal to someone like Oneil. For someone who was not a member of the military she held on really well.
hardly. Her first character was bullied by Kinsley, to the point where she was shaking with fear while he had hold of her, only letting go when SG1 returned through the Gate. Her recasting was rushed. You can tell because Wier 2 wears a suit 2 sizes to big. It smells of "quick we need to make you look powerful, here wear this random suit we found in the costume department."
One of the best episodes ever was when Anubis was attacking Earth and Hammond was on the verge of retiring. They had just finished a briefing in the oval office and the President pulls Hammond aside and says, ' I have one more job for you". Next thing we see is Gen. Hammond in the captains chair of Prometheis. He didn't back down for a second even when facing the most powerful G'ould ship to date, with a hastily built Terran ship.
It was probably due to the actor but O'Neil's time as General was so hilarious DGAF. It was believable that he'd fall into a "Eh, do whatever you want" attitude as commander and wouldn't last long, so Anderson's attitude matching that actually sort of made it work.
I think it goes to show you how much magic was captured by the casting on this show. I mean Oniel, Jackson, Hammond, Teal'c, Carter, Mccay these guys were perfect for there roles and made what was otherwise a cliché sci-fi set up into one of the best sci-fi shows of all time.
I've been bingeing the show on Hulu and I totally agree with your line-up. Hammond was awesome asa military commander stepping into an unprecedented position.
General Hammond of (rub your head in respect)...of Texas SSS+, only crisitism i have is the writers putting him in command of Prometheus, starship command requires very different knowledge and experience to running SGC . While it felt awesome in the moment looking back It just felt silly
So you've very much put them in the order or the tenure length. And since aside from Bauer they were all great, I absolutely agree that's the correct way to do it. All hail Hammond of Texas! /touching invisible hat/
Where do you suppose that O'Neill, Landry, Carter, and the other members of the SG1 team would currently be, and where do you think their careers would end up?
Hammond was the best hands down. I pretty much agree with this ranking. Do you have a similar video but for Atlantis? I like Richard Woolsey a lot, because of his character development from NID to SGA.
My list was the exact same. Though I did think it was a toss-up between oniell and Landry, I did think oniell was 3 just because he only led the SGC for one year.
If I was unfamiliar with Stargate and met Don S. Davis while in character, I wouldn’t have even the slight doubt about him being a general in the Air Force.
Damn right Hamond *waves hand over top of my bald scalp* of Texas is the best. And damn right that the suicide run in the battle of antarctica is what makes him the best.

Watched the series from the beginning and by far Don S. Davis was by far the best head of the SGC. The show would never been the same without him.
Commenting before watching here ^^
I've always said, Hammond is about the only military guy I would follow into combat. He's got sense, humanity and trust in his officers. I wouldn't feel expendable and I would know that he would try everything to bring his guys home. Best commander.
I miss Hammond slash Don S Davis so much. This made me cry.
When the time comes I'm going to petition SpaceX to name one of it's Starships...The George Hammond.
This would be great!!
No question whatsoever. General Hammond wasn’t just the best SGC commander. He was one of if not the best leader in sci fi.
I would Jack as #2 but that's probably because we already knew the character before he was base CO.
Same. He was also the funniest.
All hail Hammond of Texas
I would move O’Neil to #2 spot. I like Landry but he was still kinda new.
General Hammond is the best. Period.
The exact ranking I'd go with.
I agree with this list but what needs added is a General Samantha Carter in a 4th series
While it would be nice, technically this list is only for the existing base commanders. It even made a point to dismiss Gen. Lorne from the list.
@@brianwhiting3280 it seems you missed my point but thanks...
I'd love to see General Carter back in action at the SGC!
Don S. Davis made Hammond into a more paternal type character without it being a trope. It really felt like any character could confide in him.
Compared to the tv series on the air today it's like Mozart compared to boys in the band or some other poorly designed musical auto tuned junk with three block chords.
meh id put Weir as the worst.
General Hammond was perfect as the SC Commander
This so true to the fact. We are going through a Star Gate Thanks To Trump
100% true. Stargate was one of the highest order of knowledge seeding. It was heavily funded and influenced by the Air Force. Just wait until full disclosure, we're in for a ride...
Landry in second place? WTF? An unsympathetic character and a terrible actor compared to Elizabeth and O'Neill.
Landy is a joke compared to Hammon and even O'Neill and Elizabeth
@@boydsmith2732 That's more or less what I meant. I understand that they could hardly find anyone like Hammond (RIP), but why they put someone like that there is a mystery to me.
I don't get this sentiment. Having just watched the last 2 seasons, I thought Landry was a decent successor to Hammond. He was tough with the ori when need be and had his people's backs like you'd expect a good leader to.
@@Jarsia Watch it all from the beggining last seasons are not as good as the beggining
Jack should have been second
Hammond is one of the greatest military leaders in all of TV - he's intelligent, compassionate and most importantly trusts and listens to his people. Trusting those you lead is one of the greatest qualities a leader can have.
I was told a while back that Don S. Davis based Hammond on officers that he knew from his time in the Army.
he was such a good actor, and you could see him wearing stars.
he has the real stars now, and while we can see them now, we will!
RIP brother!
In my career i have received a lot of formal instruction on leadership and the amount that could be learned by observing general hammond is astounding
If i had one favorite clip of Hammond its at the beginning of season 7 at the start of the off world X-302 mission when O'Neill wont start the mission until he heres "good luck and godspeed"
Hammond of Texas reminds me of g1 optimus prime. Strong enough to be gentle, but ready to kick butt at a moment’s notice.
Would I move any of them around? Yes. Yes I would. I would move General Bauer around. Around to the front of the Stargate as it was opening..
Hammond of Texas, sums up Don's portrayal perfectly.
Don S. Davis was the absolute best choice for General Hammond they could ever have hoped to find.
He helped make SG-1 brilliant.
While I may have some thoughts on some of the rankings in this list, the one that I indisputably agree with is Davis as G. Hammond at #1. He was, in my mind, the real heart and soul of the show. 💖
@GateWorld Oh wow, you follow new replies on old threads!
This gives me many much happies! 😂😻💖😂
HAMMOND FOREVER
In order
1 Hammond
2 O'Neill
3 Landry
4 Weir
and last Bauer
Right on the mark!
1. Hammond
2. Landry
3. O'Neill
4. Weir
5. Bauer
Hammond and Landry are easily #1 equally in leadership skills, just Hammond doesn't have weird quirks like Landry which makes me favor him more.
@@GateWorldDotNet "Some even worse".
No one around here gives me the damned chance."
- General Landry -
(More or less).😁
Bei Jay Felger hätte er bestimmt einen Grund gefunden 😀
I was watching an old episode of McGuyver, and believe it or not, Don S. Davis played a truck driver while RAD tried to stop an explosion. Interesting how paths cross and re-cross!
In einer anderen Mavgyver-Episode fungiert er als Wilddieb. Staffel 3 Folge 19
I think we all know who #1’s going to be...
*_Waves hand over head_*
I would have to say that Elizabeth really sits as an equal to someone like Oneil. For someone who was not a member of the military she held on really well.
hardly. Her first character was bullied by Kinsley, to the point where she was shaking with fear while he had hold of her, only letting go when SG1 returned through the Gate. Her recasting was rushed. You can tell because Wier 2 wears a suit 2 sizes to big. It smells of "quick we need to make you look powerful, here wear this random suit we found in the costume department."
@@AzguardMike Can tell you do not like women in any authority.
No I wouldn't move anything around George Hammond was the best
Hammond, you always felt at peace when he was on screen. You could have absolute confidence in him.
It was probably due to the actor but O'Neil's time as General was so hilarious DGAF. It was believable that he'd fall into a "Eh, do whatever you want" attitude as commander and wouldn't last long, so Anderson's attitude matching that actually sort of made it work.
Hammond IS the SGC
General Hammond of Texas, was my favorite leader at Stargate Command.
Hammond
Landry
O'Neill
weir
Bauer
I think it goes to show you how much magic was captured by the casting on this show. I mean Oniel, Jackson, Hammond, Teal'c, Carter, Mccay these guys were perfect for there roles and made what was otherwise a cliché sci-fi set up into one of the best sci-fi shows of all time.
First! Thank you for the great content always, and for keeping the dream alive!
Best: Hammond, above and beyond. I’m not even discussing this.
Clearly Jack O'Neill is the best
My list was the exact same. Though I did think it was a toss-up between oniell and Landry, I did think oniell was 3 just because he only led the SGC for one year.
"You might want to press 1 on the old speed dial"
My grandchildren?
"Number two then"
Love general Hammond, what a character.
If I was unfamiliar with Stargate and met Don S. Davis while in character, I wouldn’t have even the slight doubt about him being a general in the Air Force.
I'm actyally first, first to finish watching 👀 before commenting.
Not gonna lie. A tad jealous 🤣.
Rip General Hammond, Never be forgotten. All time best actor Don S Davis for the role.
Damn right Hamond *waves hand over top of my bald scalp* of Texas is the best. And damn right that the suicide run in the battle of antarctica is what makes him the best.
RIP Don S Davis. The greatest military commander character of all television history.
I completely forgot about Bauer. And I think that means I agree with him being at the bottom haha
George Hammond was absolutely the very best commander of SGI! I wish we could have a new STargate program; it was so good!
When i think of how a leader should behave, the character of General George Hammond is one of my guiding stars.
Like the Episode / show...Just found you will consider sud...good job.
Hammad was the best. He knew from the time he was a Lieutenant that he would play a pivotal role in the development of SG1.
