- Over a year ago, we received a letter from Universal asking us to remove the Jurassic Park IP from our game. Now the game officially has a new name and logo, so hopefully Universal will finally leave me alone.

Game Studio CEO here - I just wanted to say, the fact that they haven't just given you a cease and desist and tried to force you to stop means that they probably really like the project. IP licensing, especially from bigger companies, is finicky and being told to remove logos to prevent people from assuming it's a licensed game is actually quite an honour. They can't control the contents of the game, you could put some personal propoganda in there or some parts of the game may be subpar, this is most likely what they're trying to protect against (i.e. removing the chance that anything in your game would be reflected against the company/IP).
Don't feel like the trademark removal is a setback, if anything it means you're doing really well! Your re-design is looking great, been following this project for a while now and it's incredible to see the progress.
I was thinking that too. There are companies like Nintendo that outright say “delete your files bro” so this seems like a cordial response in comparison
Aaand with how lots of media is these days where the creators of LICENCED stuff have their personal propaganda... yeah that's a bitter pill right there. like "hey this is cool, but we'd rather have our personal propagandists making subpar broken-on-release-with-half-the-stuff-missing games than be connected to... *gasp* an Actual Passion Project!"
Or the fact that it's in Dreams and not an actual game engine so there is no chance for real financial gain.
It shude be an official game but ported to something like Unreal Engine or Unity so more people can play it. And hopefully get a studio to publish it.
@@DuskLegend Usually those takedowns are from the Nintendo Corporation, not Nintendo USA, which has to apply Japanese copyright law which doesn't allow any form of fair use and much stricter guidlines.
This news sucks but man, I gotta say, it's pretty wild that your game in Dreams is so good that Universal said that players might confuse it with the official thing. That's an insane compliment, in a way.

The game is not “so good” that it might be confused with the official thing. He’s literally used the same name, plot, font, music, probs, building designs, island name and shape, need I go on?

@@fieldmarshaljoe The only reason Universal knew about it is because it looks as good as it does. That's what drove the hype. Creators use the JP name with impunity in many projects. This game was a problem for Universal because the level of quality got the attention of the fans.
I'm honestly surprised I feel it more likely they'd have you shut the whole thing down but they said, "hey, just give it a different name"

The fact they don't want to sponsor this game just proves how stupid today's corporate executives have become. They're worried about their IP and this looks amazing and well done, mainly because it doesn't have corporate executives pulling the strings.

As a fellow graphic designer (and HUGE JP fan) initially I was skeptical about the likelihood of coming close enough to capturing the right feel with the new logo, and it was funny, in this video as you were showing each iteration, you were pointing out things that I was literally thinking about how each one just didn't look quite right (still good looking, of course)... but then when you revealed the final, and its inverted variant, I audibly said "OOOOooo!" Very well done, sir. You did it, you crazy sonofabitch. Yes, it's unfortunate that you can't use the official branding, but I'm legitimately impressed with the workaround.

Ip law concerns confusion, and it say at 0:30 that the emulations of the setting and environment is ip violation, which it is because it’s plagiarism.

Okay, hear me out: Raptor pouncing. You could have raptors pounce on you whether like all the time or in cutscenes, and maybe you could mash a button to get it off or something. That'd honestly be really cool.
Say what you will.. As someone else pointed out the fact they didn't sent a cease and desist is pretty nice of them. They do have to protect they copy right/trademark and if they learn something unoffical have been made that uses the name and logo and don't do anything they will loss said copy right so they really did have to take the step but instead of the Nuclear option they went more "Hey man this cool and all but you can't really use our name and logo but if you just remove those then all good" Which means you can still make the game you want and give honor that amazing movie :) I am looking forward to seeing how this game do once it's ready :)

Actually he won’t get sued. Because everything he made is original art work from him building & making it. In order for them to sue him. They would have to have their logo & Company brand name behind it. Labeled in his game. that he himself put in it. It’s the same thing about making Tshirts. You can have a picture of jurassic Park because the company has no right to your shirt. Bc you didn’t put their company name behind it. This happens all the time by the way. Copy rights are just that. You cannot claim it’s yours by taking the names & putting the companies name behind it to make money. That’s all it is. You can’t make a movie & call it jurassic Park 7 & say it’s from the future. & say the company name & logo. That’s all it is. Not the art work that you put in yourselves. If you took a shot from the movie and plastered that short clip of shot in your game then yes that is copy right. But if you do the shot from the movie in your game as the game artwork. unreal engine is VERY different to the Dreams engine, it also costs money to publish a game on steam.

@@ironhell813 It falls under "Fair Use" regimen. He cannot be sued because of Fair Use clause. As long as he is not making profit of it, it falls under fair use fan game.
@@solitaregames that’s not how fair use works. Fair use is supposed to be used to inform the public of a copyrighted work, you can’t use it to justify plagiarism.
Even if it isn’t for money, you cannot use someone else work to promote that work or yourself. You’re using the property for personal non financial gain it’s still plagiarizing. Look up fair use if you don’t believe me.

So long as he changes the likenesses enough to be considered fair use he should be fine.
Universal can't copyright dinosaurs, zoos, islands, or dinosaur zoos on islands. Those things are public domain.
Plus, with the right elements, parody law would be a boon. Between that, fair use, and the fact that he isn't selling anything... I mean... he's got a pretty good case.
His biggest worry should be Universal suing him even if he'd win because he'd have to lawyer up and that ain't cheap.
He doesn’t have any case at ALL because any good JP fan knows that almost all of JP is distinct including the designs of the island the Dino’s and the buildings and he CANNOT COPY ANY OF IT

Im not, I conceptualizer this game ten years ago but it’s supposed to be licensed not plagiarized.
This game cannot be released because it’s plagiarism renaming it isn’t enough. 0:30 says emulating the environment and settings is plagiarism and a violation of the law.

just as a small suggestion, make sure to make it clear that the audio of dinosaurs you're using atm for these are placeholders as I am 100% sure that Universal will screw you over with that part.
There's descriptive examples of how they made the noises on youtube for free that you can use to make your own that'll work as a middle finger to them.

And it's only plagiarism if the similarities are less than 20% different than the one complaining, if they are more than 20% different then the original IP has no real grounds to complain about it as the copyright system in the US considers it an original work.
And as he's already changed the name, the design of the opening, the vehicles, on a guess of it I'd argue h'es about 7-9% major differences already. And from the designs we've seen he's having characters doing ziplining down areas I don't remember ziplining going on in the movies or the books they're based on so that's another few points of difference and we're nearly at that 20% already.
Wonder what else he can change between now and the end product?

The “20%” you’re referring to is likely the De Minimis Doctrine and this was thrown out a long time ago.
All you need to know to correctly interpret copyright laws around the world (and in the us) is if there is a possibility of confusion or intent to use it cause that is the root of the laws as making works that are too similar robs the rightful owner of a work to the right to protect and profit from their work.

Question: in the River Adventure level, are you controlling the boat, or is it like a ride, and you’re just sitting there?
I have play tested the river adventure a few times. When I tried it you could control the boat left and right, but it’s still mostly on rails.
As far as I know there’s no way to take a “different path”. But uh, holy crap. There’s some very cool and unexpected things that happen.

For "Free Roam Mode" add a "Field Research" aspect where you can record specific unexpected discoveries like "Gallimimus and Stegosaurus interaction resulted in hostility" or "Possible unknown disease affecting Dilophisaurus." Idk what else it would do but it's something. Maybe add a photo mode with it. Cretaceous Kingdom Snap! lol
You do a very good work with the reloading procedure of the spas only one thing with the closed stock! you can't see the front sight !

I can’t believe Universal is doing this! That raptor gameplay looked so ominous! This game will be so much better then their official game and I thinks it’s dumb that instead of embracing an amazing game made about their movies FOR FREE, they just shoved it down.
Also, I do a lot of 3D modeling and CGI and it is unbelievable to me that you haven’t gotten crazy fatigued yet, props for that!
I don’t know if you can import models or stuff like that, but I made a realistic Metricanthosaurus model in Blender that you can find on my ArtStation portfolio. I’d be happy to send it over to you if it would help although I would need to bake the textures into images.

11. Caring for the dinos (feeding, breeding, cleaning, maintenance, etc)
12. Multiplayer (if that’s possible in Dreams)
13. Weather (rain, snow, hail, etc)
14. Progression (levels, equipment, skins, etc)
15. Leaderboard
16. Speedrun incentives?

Krenautican I know it has been a while, but I love seeing what you've done. When I wake up in the morning and see you've posted another video I put everything else on hold just to watch it, and I've got to say, WOW. You guys haven't lost any steam or drive toward your dream ( no pun intended hahah). Just to see your tenacity and drive toward your goal. It makes me proud to be apart of such a strong fan base. It's people like you and the people helping you that makes me want to do more for the starved fan base. I'm proud of you. We are proud of you. That even with such a huge blow from universal you pushed on and didn't let it keep you down. I know it's not an incredible video game, but several years ago I build a fully fleshed out JP fence in my living room as an entertainment center, complete with functional lights and shoe storage, I've been slowly adding my Jp collection of nic-nacs on it, and if you'd like I'd be happy to attempt to draw out plans for you, or just build one for you. But seriously it makes me happy beyond word to see what you and your team have accomplished with fleshed out npcs walking around, it's incredible!!!!! We'll done sir!!!! Keep up the great work!!!! With all that you've done and gone throu you take as long as you need to build something beautiful, not just to push it out (cough cough universal). Good job and dream on brother!
unbelievable what you have made just within "Dreams" that is absolutely wild. i imagine it is fairly limiting in a lot of aspects like with the animations. especially in first person. it would be really cool if the raptors could pounce onto the player character and knock them on their back, attacking with their foot claws and such. That sounds like it might be impossible tho.
I’m actually planning on adding a pounce attack if the Raptor spots the player from far away. It’ll try to sneak up and stay undetected, and then pounce when it’s close enough.

@@ironhell813 I appreciate your concern, but I didn’t try to pass off my work as official. From the beginning, I’ve tried to make it very clear that this is a fan made project. I also don't want a job. I prefer to work independently.
In their original letter, they asked me to remove my videos, but I never did. It’s been over a year, so they clearly can’t actually remove my videos because they’re transformative and fall under fair use.
I’m sorry to take their free advertising, but at the same time, I’m giving them free advertising with this game. I’m creating excitement and driving engagement for the brand.
Also, I can make the dinosaurs look however I want. They’re dinosaurs. You can’t copyright a real animal, since you could argue that’s what an actual dinosaur might have looked like.
Honestly most people who make games wouldn't even use the Jeep name because it's pointless exposure to legal issues.
A- they know you make money through Patreon or w/e, so even if its a free game, you profit off their property....
B- they don't have time to scan every file to make sure its "free of brand-damaging content".
Just don't use copyrighted materials, or expect to get a copyright strike. This happens all the time and people are always surprised by it.
Love the free roam thing. I would love to explore the visitor centre, run the tour programme, experience the ride that they had when they got to the park. I would love to see where guests to the park would stop, maybe behind the visitor center.

Universal only seems to care about lazily milking the IP. To that I can only respond by quoting a certain someone, “I do not blame people for their mistakes. But I do expect them to pay for them.”

It's not nearly as simple as that
honestly, credit to you for making a game that is so realistically similar to jurassic park that they force you to rebrand it. But at least they didn't wait until after you had released it and made large amounts of money and then asked for a pay cut while also forcing you to change the branding and/or just delete the game entirely, like a lot of other large corporate companies love to do.
So if you are looking for things to collect in free mode, the easy option is embryos, could even make the visitor center room with them all fill up as they are collected, or if you are just looking for more for a player to do in free roam, finding iconic locations to take pictures of could be an idea, or even some kind of document the various animals doing different things depending on how much they can reasonably do.
So UNV. didnt make something like this, like many wanted... you create it and they tweek out... instead of taking the free focus on their product they just put a bad taste in the fans mouths. How low end. Looks awesome though!
have you played The JP game for 360? It's pretty good. And If you're actually salty about a company protecting their IP, you're the weird one. No one else has a bad taste over this.

There is an official project called Jurassic Park: Survival in the making by Saber Interactive. Should be released on all current gen consoles and PC (steam / epic)
I know that I am probably a bit late to comment on this video, but I just wantet to thank you so much for not giving up on this project. As a fan of the original trilogy I was looking for a good jurassic park experience that is not just a park builder, but more focused on the peoples perspective as staff or visitors in the park. Universal actually is a fair IP holder in my experience. They aren't asshats and do care for the IPs in good faith. Lots of good people working there.

Man, I’ve always wanted to make a game like this but I never got far enough in my skill set in game design to pull something like this together. I love this idea so much and I wish I could help on this project. Id love to get into game design with something like this. So cool! Great work so far!

A top for your logo: it has to be recognizable from a distance. Hence make the logo blurry and see if you still can see what it's about or what it stands for.
The Jurassic Park logo does that perfectly with its distinguishable Tyrannosaurus skull and the big white font that's used.
You did such an amazing job, you deserve more attention. The nostalgia you brought to me was incredible, just by watching the video I felt like I was in Jurassic Park. Too bad this isn't available for PC.

I saw this game not too long ago but now after finding the channel and seeing everything I am getting the game as soon as it drops. Props to you especially after finding out that you were making the game on a ps5.

I think an interesting thing for the free roam would be the ability to completly shut down power to the park and being able to open and roam into paddocks of dinosaurs. idk it's just a wierd idea. Anyways you did such an amazing job man I am super excited for your game and wish you the best of luck.

Jurassic Park is my favorite movie, so you've have my attention for years, and its been really cool seeing a passionate fan create such a work of art.
Its been very interesting to see how you, through sheer dedication, mastered Dreams and navigated its limitations.
Ultimately, its a shame Universal couldn't look the other way on this one, but at least their demands were reasonable enough for you to accommodate, all too many fan created works have been shut down from strict IP protection.

At 6:43, I simply had stars in my eyes. The idea of having to remake the logo? That made me dizzy. I'm so impressed by your dedication to do that. But, making a musical score that's in the same vein as John William's music? I've never felt more proud of someone making a fan game before. I’m so sad that this didn’t get to be like it was originally planned, because it was by far the closest that anything has gotten to the feel of the original JP since maybe 1994 with the original games. Still, it was looks amazing, and I can’t wait to see it finished. Maybe I’ll get a play station just to see this

Freeroam Idea: Collections. Id love to wander the gorgeous lands, collect plants and insects. Maybe you could find a rare egg in a nest and take it back to hatch it for a surprise pet? Love what your doing!!
You're taking this really well, because if I did all this work they would have had to sue my ass into bankruptcy. I mean you made a better Jurassic Park game than anything licensed by Universal in decades. Not that park builders arent cool, but *THIS* is what we needed.
For the hiding from the raptor gamemode, I would recommend making it so that when you are crouched, you cant see over the top of the tables and when you stand you are much higher than the tables. This way it is more surprising and suspenseful when crouched when the raptor is trying to find you and makes it more dangerous if you stand too much.
Collecting embryo samples would be pretty neat (vials of DNA exclusive from the infamous spray can - could return them to cryo one by one as you collect them, adding to the sense of completing your visitor center).
All of this is incredible! I'm especially impressed with the Raptor animations 😮
Not sure what you'll think of this, but here's an idea: Since CK is orange and blue, what if the fire on the front Gates are blue as well? To differentiate even more from JP but still feel familiar, but it already looks great the way it is!

Prolly go unnoticed and is too difficult but maybe for the visitor center, you could make the items have no fixed positions so it can be more creative to the player. like in the JW mobile game, you can move the enclosures when you want, but otherwise stay in that same place if untouched

For collectibles for the visitors center I'd say have some bones scattered around the map and you slowly build up an exhibit peice for the main hall or other areas
Man I just found this and it looks so good just from what I’m seeing in this video, I can’t wait to watch gameplay of it in the future and potentially play the game.
I can definitely feel the awareness of the raptor pack and it really rushes your mind on what to do, and hopefully when working more on them maybe I hope to see them acting more as a pack!
In the book we see them act more deadly, conning, and sneaky dinosaurs that will hunt you down with great planning so I hope you could implement some of those behaviors in game!

As a fellow JP aficionado this is what will make me get a PlayStation again when it comes out. PS: that raptor in the kitchen made me jump a little and motivated me to create an adventure at JP using the Alien RPG system. Thank you!
