I actually use a glidecam for my professional work. It takes a bit of technique, but once you have it down, you can get 90% of the same shots. And you don't need batteries, and it will never glitch out... Like I always say, physics will never malfunction.

The steady cam was not exactly as smooth but it didn't have the weird bouncing movement that plagues gimbals. Both require learning before you get cinematic results. Good comparison and clever to use someone that hasn't used them to show the difference skill makes with the steady cam.
I like that you showed how much difference the skill level makes: gimbals good for everyone, and steadicam only good with skill. I recently bought a cheap steadicam and was surprised by how difficult it was. The balancing alone was a nightmare.
That's because you bought the cheaper one, also owned chepo for 2-3 years, got better with time but still it is worse than glidecam hd, recently bought used hd2000 for 170 and oh man that thing is so easy
I actually thought the cheap gimbal looked better when you did the test. It just seems more natural and organic (and therefore more cinematic) than the motorized one. The only motorized gimbal that didn't seem robotic to me is the Ronin S! Thanks for the video:)
That's the point! That's why even in Hollywood the mostly shoot with steadycams it's much more natural and cinematic👌🏼

The Steadicam feels more fluid and natural
I think so too, but the gimbal is definitely more consistent!
NigelBarros good point, maybe worth having both. Biggest thing I wanna have is to get the shot quickly in as few takes possible. I’m finding it more annoying to try to get it right handheld.
Some movements make it look more natural, and sometimes that's what you want. I bet a bit of post-stabilization would smooth that out if needed.

My inexpensive Vixia HFR800 already has pretty good digital stabilization. When combined with the inexpensive mechanical stabilizer *and* a skilled/attentive technique it should do a great job!

I've always preferred the smoothness of a stabilizer but with the right gimbal, camera, and IBIS you can get amazing buttery smooth footage from a gimbal.
I use both . The stabilizer for more natural look or cinematic mood and the Crane 2 for more technical scene . but the only problem i encountered with the stabilizer is when you are outside and you have to much wind . then you can't use it . and yes you need a lot of practice to operate the Stabilizer. I use a Canon T7I with a big wide angle Tamron 10-24 mm
This makes me feel better that I went out and got a 3 axis gimbal from using my glidecam hd2000..stable footage with minimal enough or skill. Great content man glad I found your channel and yes I've hit the bell lol
Very glad that you decided to explain that it took some skill to use the cheaper option as well as showing the difference in skill. I feel like many RUclipsrs would have left this part out.
That cheap stabilizer design use to cost about 400 dollars back in the day.

Cuz they actually worked. Usually cheap things =crappy ISH, noticeable cheaper, and expensive items are expected to work well . These worked well. They got away with the $400 cuz people got it and actually got something out of it.
Great demonstration, and beautiful image, as usual! I'm surprised at how much those mechanical stabilizers are coming down in price (presumably because the gimbals are getting cheaper). A year or so ago, they were $100 or more.

I personally prefer the Steadycam look because it‘s more natural and you can operate it better - especially for slow slider like movements. only prefer the gimbal for higher speed shots (dirt bike etc.)
I have both of these kinds of stabilizer. Both have same purpose, to stabilize. But each of it has different specific purpose. I will keep to use the steadycam for some kind of shooting. It has natural feel and sometimes its all what i want, not too steady, but feels live.
Good comparison, very noticeable but I can see where one might benefit for a "look" over the other (whether that's steadier or "homemade") A) I notice I focused more on the background moving around and the subject was second B) I focused on the subject and she had more movement in her stride with a smoother background that wasn't distracting.
I used to have a glide cam but it got stolen on a gig. There is a very large learning curve with just being able to set it up to be balanced. And as soon as you change your lens the entire balance gets thrown off... or even if you just flip open your lcd screen... it will have to be re-balanced. Honestly it was a pain to use.

You're video came at the perfect time for me! I'm looking at getting a €50 stabiliser. The footage looked good.
Attaching a monopod to a camera and using image stabilization works well for me. Then I can stabilize further in post for rock-solid shots. However, thanks for showing how much better a gimbal is. My B Camera, a Canon XC10, would be perfect on a gimbal.

Having both is a solid investment.
Not only you can bring out your traditional when the gimbal's battery suddenly runs out. Not also when you'll be shooting a rainy scene (unless the gimbal's waterproof).
You can also save your gimbal for definitely camera-intensive scenes by using the traditional for otherwise.

Honestly I am using that cheap stabilizer since few month for my LUMIX G6 and it works very well. If you ask me this is the Must have for budget beginner!

In my opinion, I would go for the cheap stabiliser. I would agree to what you said about the no-need batteries and the waterproof side. I do a lot of outdoor shots and recharging batteries would be a problem. Thanks for this info video.
You are absolutely right, however it takes a lot of time to balance and master the stabilizer... I spent hours trying to get it balanced and then using it properly was extremely hard. I finally gave up tossed it in the closet and purchased a gimbal .....

The advantage of using a electronic gimbal is that you can focus all your effort on composition vs keeping it stable.
The steadycam is what I still bought in 2021. I am never a fan of gimbal because it cant turn quickly, it glitches frequently. In smoothness the steadycam is a bad ass when it comes to cenematic shots. I love it even more.

I just purchased this Cisno, it was used with no instructions, I've watched several videos on how to balance different stabilizers but It just spins out of control, any suggestions?

Not many reviews online and even less in the U.S. I would love a gimbal but can't afford the ronin s. I was looking at the fosicam fm1-45 last year but it was discontinued I hear.
I'd hate to spend $400 and this thing explodes the next day and the company pulls up the tent stakes and leaves town the same day.
My gimbal died while making my new short so it would have been great to have that mechanical one as a back up. Do you think it would work ok with a mobile phone? Do you have any videos on how to use it?

To get the highest bit rate with a Panasonic gh2, do you have to use the avchd format or whatever it’s called?

I don’t want to use my laptop since it sucks when it comes to editing, and putting the videos on my laptop first would be a huge hassle of an extra step. I’d like to be able to transfer them to my phone directly if possible

First take which you used stabilizer cisno is the best. When you use the gombal its a little more stricted and stressful footage for me. first one suits the scene emotionally most.

At the 400$ price range you can get the zhiyun crane plus now. Really great gimbal with some really advanced features, well worth the money

This is the first time I heard Hoham gimbal. I know DJI and Feiyu , they have very good gimbals.

I have same cheap stabilizer as your. Not bad for my first device. More better than handheld shooting, especially when you're shooting in 60 fps.
A6000 & sigma 16mm can be good in steadicam bro?

Glidecam always looks better! I still use mine because I don't have to worry about batteries running out.

You could tell by the way shot b had up and down movement because gimbal can't get rid of all up and down movement

How much does the Hohem gimbal block the back of the screen?
My Gh3 screen flips out so it doesn't block it at all, but with something like a sony it probably would block it a lot
I doubt you used the duck walk technique when you used the glidecam.

It was easy to tell right away. It was obvious that A was $40, due to the slight swinging motion in the shot. In shot B, it was clear that it was filmed with the iSteady, due to the shot looking perfect.
Before I watch video: I reckon mechanical gimbal will give smoother footage with no jerkiness, but more floating. Electronic gimbal will give footage perfectly level with horizon, but more jerky (sudden correction, small jitter). Manual gimbal demand perfect balancing that can be very fiddly and tedious with cheap gimbals and every gram of change on setup counts against balance, while gyro-gimbals excuse a lot of mistakes with expense of less smooth image. Now, let's go watching. :)

Your experienced use of the stabilizer was 100% passable and usable. So much + for something with no batteries needed etc. BUT...I'd take a motorised one if anyone was offering! Ha!
But the prices of gimbals is getting above that of actual cameras and we need to all say "NO" to that shit. It's purely taking advantage.

40$ Steadycam looks good, but in this video you don't really push both to their limits. Slow walking should be easy for both. I would like to see a video in which you compare them in extreme conditions :D Anyways a great video!

Heyy there, it's incredibly difficult to master a steadycam and I think it's one of the hardest techniques in filmmaking at all. Even in big movie productions the DoPs use steadycams over gimbal (Emanuel Lutzbezki got famos threw his steadycam skills). So gimbals are just more practical and easier to use (for getting much better footage much faster) but when you are good with a steadycam you can even achieve better results.
