  • A nice easy day flying from Albenga, Italy to London Stansted. Then getting told of by air traffic control for not maintaining an assigned speed. All was well though

    Awesome video! Must be fun having a heavy following behind! Just a few weeks ago there was a Loganair ATR on approach heathrow 27L with a singapore airlines a380 Super behind and the SIA a380 went around in the end unsurprisingly

      Thank you for watching, very much appreciated. Always fun to hear when your either chasing or being chased by a heavy. Fortunately we have the ability to maintain the higher speeds comfortably than an ATR would be able to. We just forgot on this occasion 🤦🏼‍♂️🤣 we did apologise to the 777 after we landed. There was no go around on this one. I can only imagine the cost of a go around on an a380 😬

    Is it not a rule over there that when cleared for an approach it cancels speed restrictions unless they are restated?

    • @Scott_Barclay
      @Scott_Barclay  Год назад

      The speed is yours unless otherwise stated. It's down to the controller as to what they want you at, this can be any time during the approach no matter the speed given by the previous controller. It's quite common in London to be given 165knts until 5 mile final. Before that it's down to you

      @@Scott_Barclay I ask because I’m a controller in the USA and when they slowed it was with the approach clearance making it legal and not worth the tongue lashing but if speed restrictions hold until other wise specified then I understand.

    • @Scott_Barclay
      @Scott_Barclay  Год назад

      Yeh, we just got it very wrong as crew, we were assigned the speed but when handed over we "assumed" we could revert back to approach speed then never discussed it. We were very wrong hence the lashing. We work the same as US controlling in Europe also. Our bad that day 🤦🏼‍♂️

    Hello! Future pilot here finishing my ATPL, would like to know how many flight hours you do per year as an executive pilot! Thanks a lot

    • @Scott_Barclay
      @Scott_Barclay  Год назад

      Hi LoxosM, congratulations on getting through the ATPL. Was not my favourite part of learning to fly. A lot of companies have different requirements. We do roughly around 350/400hrs per year. These hours can be higher on charter operations. Hope that helps 👍🏻
      Thank you for taking the time to watch the video

      @@Scott_Barclay fantastic, thanks so much for the fast answer, I’m very curious about joining your world but of course also the airlines. I’ll see what my first job offer will be! 🤣

    As the plane gets ready to land are there different flap settings for the size and weight of the plane ✈️ or is it all the same ?

    • @derrick_blak_
      @derrick_blak_ Год назад +2

      depends on how short or long you want to land i.e flaps dictate how fast or slow you can fly an approach to land. In short, depends on pilot decision, otherwise there's often standard flap settings for takeoff and landing for each aircraft type.

    • @Scott_Barclay
      @Scott_Barclay  Год назад +2

      Hi Fatima, @derrick_blak_ is correct. Each aircraft has flap settings for departure.
      Our aircraft on departure has a standard setting of slats out and flaps set to 6 degrees. If we need to get better performance on departure we can depart slats out flaps 16 degrees. It's down to aircraft weight and runway length available. However on landing the slats and flaps are used in stages 6,16,30 degrees to slow the aircraft down. Depending on weight. We always land in the fully extended configuration. There are certain times we would land at 6 degrees but it has a little more behind the reasons, like a technical problem with the plane. Hope that helps 👍🏻
