I love this camera! Thanks for the video. By the way, regarding the A button, there is a setting in the menu (called A Button Switch on page 3/7 under operation) that allows you to set it to “press and hold” which makes it much harder to accidentally enable Auto mode.
This was really helpful thanks. I was looking for a compact travel camera where I could either 'point and shoot' or let my creative juices flow. I ended up deciding the Lumix LX100 II was the camera for me, however there are none to be found, anywhere. The D-Lux 7 looked almost exactly the same but one awful lot more expensive, the only real difference I could see is that 'Leica' logo on the front, and I imagined myself discreetly doing street photography (with hopefully nobody noticing) though at the same time ensuring that everybody sees that I have an expensive camera! In the end, I think that I'll get the D-Lux 7, nothing else does it for me. Great video. I bought one of these two years ago to have something that has a nice look and feel which is also much more compact than my full frame DSLR. I wound up using the camera almost exclusively as I find the images on average better than those coming from my full frame camera. Also... I love the little external flash that comes with the camera as it conveniently uses power from the battery and comes in handy when just a little bit of extra light on the subject in day shots is helpful. I wish Leica would make the same exact camera but with a full frame sensor which is to say a fixed lens with the same zoom.
Thank you Nick, a simple but extremely useful review of the camera menu for an amateur like me. I hope you make another video where you go more in depth with tips, to take good pictures. Thanks it was a pleasure to watch.
The camera is amazing, I also shoot full frame digital and 35mm and medium format film photography. With the cost of 35mm color film going through the roof, I have been using the camera to do a lot of color street photography. This camera gives me great 8x10 prints. The Leica lens is superb, the colors are more real looking. While the Fuji X100 is a great camera, I sold it since I’m just not into then very vivid Fuji colors.

My Sony A7iii can’t go that wide as I need to pay a great deal money for a wide lens. I can get great blurry backgrounds with the DLux7! I don’t have time to tweak pictures so I am using JPEG at the moment. I will explore RAW very soon. I took 2000 or more pictures during my around the world trip with a Sony RX100 mark 6 so I have no time to tweak them. Some maybe... However, this like camera is a GEM!!! I am really impressed! Thanks for the excellent video! very clear and exhaustive! Just got a D Lux 7 before a trip and already loving it after a couple of days shooting. Perfect camera for size, weight, all important functions at your fingertips. And my first Leica after dreaming of owning one for years :) The only thing I struggled with a bit is the touchscreen: even when using the viewfinder with the screen off, accidentally touching the screen with my nose activates the touchscreen, moving the AF point.. I ended up having to switch off the touchscreen option. Would be nice to have the option to automatically switch off touchscreen when only using the viewfinder!

Great video, thank you much. I reset mine to factory to follow your lead. Your tools setting had a wifi option. Mine doesn’t. I just bought this and am learning. Amy more help is appreciated.
Very good and clear instructional video, thank you Nick. One small disappointment: so much of the menu was dismissed as 'irrelevant to shooting in RAW' - but lots of folks shoot JPEG rather than RAW and an explanation of all the menu options could be really helpful.
Thanks Nick. I just got one - my 1st Leica. it looks and feels good and I registered all your tips. Its going to be a great companion. Thanks for the vid. Could you do a vid on video recording with this little beauty?
The HDR function only works with Jpegs - for shooting raw you need to use auto-bracket and then blend in Lightroom later. This will give a much better result.
@@LeicaCameraAustralia thank you for confirming the functionality is there… I prefer to use auto bracket and post process in Photomatrix or Lightroom. I wanted to make sure the auto bracket feature was there.
Great explanation of the D-lux 7 just had mine delivered and found the menu a minefield, one question tho ! How does the focus area work once to the eye, each time I try to move its position with my thumb the menu displays or if I turn touch screen of the focus point doesn’t move at all when using the direction pad ? I’m sure there’s a simple answer! I’m doing something wrong ! Thanks again
Sorry, I don't have one to hand to check out what you describe. Hard to diagnose otherwise. I suggest taking it into a store and seeing if the staff can help.
Hi, thank you for this great video. I am almost sold to the D-Lux 7, but one thing is keeping me from buying it right away, it’s that many people say they easily get lots of dust on the inside lens which affects shots quality. What do you think of it?
Dust inside the lens rarely affects image quality unless it's really bad. Having said that, I do not know of any problems with internal dust, I certainly had had no trouble with mine. The D-Lux 7 should no better or worse than any other camera of a similar design in this regard.
I was getting really excited by this camera, and then I realised its the Panasonic LX 100 ii made in China, I am genuinely interested to know what sets them apart?
Hello, one problem I have with the DLux-7 is that I can't make the bluetooth connection work! I've installed Leica Fotos in my mobile phone, the camera is paired, and.... that's it! I can't download any photos. Coud it be that I'm shooting in Raw? I don't know but it's terribly frustrating and I've written to Leica in London - if I can sort this in a few days I'll return the camera - which is a shame because everything else is brilliant. No reply so far.... Perhaps you could suggest a troubleshooting video for problems with Leica Fotos? Thanks!
Hard to troubleshoot at a distance. I don't have a D-Lux to hand right now but I will do soon. I'll check the connectivity then. In the meantime, try setting the camera to RAW+JPG or JPG only and see if you can get at the Jpegs.
Amazing camera. I’m eyeballing it so I don’t have to lug around my other camera. Small enough to have in your bag. Question, since you have a touch screen on the back, I assume you can move the focus point with your finger? I can do it with my Canon M6 Mk2. Thanks a lot for the tutorial.
Amazing piece of equipment! Thank you thank you thank you! I just got this for Christmas and I couldn’t be happier. It is definitely a game changer. I have taken a couple of test shots and the picture quality is superb.
@@LeicaCameraAustralia thanks a lot for your info, I/ve had this camera for three months and it is awesome! I’ve taken a lot of pictures with it and couldn’t be happier. The only issue I have is the the zoom is not very responsive when I try to zoom back to wide. Is this a mechanical problem with the camera?
Thank you for your videos. Having problems downloading pics. I must have the settings wrong. I am using the PHOTOS and Light Room on my cell. Did some B/W pics not downloading to software on cell. Could you tell me what I am doing wrong.
Thank you for the helpful video! Could you explain how to adjust the 60 / 30 second timed shutter “T” selection? When I put the shutter speed in “T” for shooting lowlight I am struggling to figure out how to adjust from 60”. Thanks.
Hi Steven. Use the 1+ setting on the shutter speed dial and you can choose any shutter speed up to 60 seconds by using the rear dial around the menu button.
Hi Ricardo. Good question. At 3:2 you get a 16MB (4928x3288px) capture, at 4:3 you get 17MP (4736x3552px). According to the published specifications it's a 21.77MP sensor so both settings are crops. You are right that 4:3 captures more pixels but what I meant to say, and I admit I was not especially clear, is that you get more pixels across the frame which I consider more useful. 4:3 is an unusual shape, 3:2 fits a more pleasing ratio, IMO anyway.
Thanks a lot! Great video and very useful. And a question too, does the camera make a soft sound, like if there were a constant little motor always on? Mine does and I am not sure if it is normal.. Its a tiny sound, but appreciable, when you bring the camera to the eye in a quiet environment... :/
@@LeicaCameraAustralia Thanks a lot. Weird thing is that it also sounds when the stabiliser if OFF, but i guess it is what it is. Thanks for the reply and for the great video!
@@LeicaCameraAustralia :O That is ODD indeed! AF is set to AFS. It is truth that without the stabiliser the sound is much less noticeable, but still is. info@leica replied to my email that the sound is normal... now I am confused :/
Hi Nick, thank you for the tutorial! Question about chromatic aberration: I saw your picture of the cathedral, even though the edges have high contrast, it’s beautiful and without any fringing; I took a similar picture of trees with bright cloudy background, but it had lots of purple fringing, what tricks did you use to avoid it? Or did you fix it later in Lightroom? Thank you!
No tricks. There is simply no colour fringing in the image. I just looked up the original raw file and it shows zero fringing. I was mildly surprised actually, but no, nothing to fix. It was shot at f4 and ISO100.
This video has been such a great help. Apologies if this has already been asked but the display shows photos so much brighter/vivid than they really are. I think I’ve snapped the perfect picture and when I download it I have to mess with exposure and vibrancy etc every time. I want to edit the least amount possible. Is there a way to make the display show the true photo when you look through the gallery?
That's a tricky one. You do need to have a monitor that is properly calibrated and profiled. Try viewing images on an iPad - do they then look like the screen on the back of the camera?
Thank you very much for your explanation of this little but powerful camera. I just got mine because watched your videos. I am new to the Leica camera. So I can't find technique support online or on phone. As I follow your instruction on how to set up the camera, there are quite a few differences on my camera. The panorama settings are can't be set. I can't find a place to set my focus point. In your video, you talk about using QM, but my QM is not showing the focus choice. I have reset the camera so I can follow your instructions, no matter choose shooting at raw or JPG. If you could give me some ideas on how to fix that, it will be greatly appreciated
According to the Manual, the camera works with SDHC up to 32GB and SDXC cards up to 128GB. I do not know if bigger cards can be used. 128GB will hold about 6400 raw images, not sure why a bigger card would be of much benefit!
@@LeicaCameraAustralia Because I have a spare 512GB SD card. And I made an appointment on the 12th to buy the Dlux7 007 version, it seems that I have to buy another 128GB SD card.
@@LeicaCameraAustralia I've been using dlux7 for two weeks now.And I love it. The only disadvantage is shooting night scenes, which is really different from full-frame cameras. But as a camera for recording children's growth, it is small and convenient. Of course, I don't need to use such a large capacity memory card, just because my working camera has been replaced with a CFA memory card, and there is just a 512GB card left unused. By the way, I tested the SanDisk 512GB SD card to work with the Dlux7.
Hello, new sub here! I’m planning to get this model, but i have some questions. How does it compare to the latest iphone13 pro max cameras quality? And is it good enough for me to print such as a3 printing size?
Hard to compare directly, but one thing that is much better on the D-Lux is the ability to use the camera in manual mode much more effectively. Yes, you can get photo apps on the phone but, IMO, nothing beats the analogue control of a dedicated camera. You will also find you can use genuine, optical limited depth of field with the D-Lux. This is something you cannot do on the iPhone without using the portrait mode which can work surprisingly well, but, being essentially a 'mask', can also lead to severe artifacting.
Hi Nick Thank you for an informative and detailed video on the Leica D Lux 7 delivered at exactly the right pace for the viewer/listener to digest(I often wonder if American reviewers are in a race to finish) I am hoping to buy the D Lux 7 for my birthday next month but being of Yorkshire heritage I am reluctant to pay the extra, over the Panasonic LX 100 Mk II, when in performance they seem identical. However, I have noticed that the D Lux 7 is slightly larger and heavier and two professional reviewers thought the colour results were slightly better which they attributed to the sensor. Is there any basis or facts for this - or is it wishful thinking?
The weights are almost identical, as is the size. The difference in colour of the Jpegs is partially due to a different colour aesthetic between Japan and Europe, and partially due to Leica's superior colour science.
Hello, I have searched multiple websites and videos and cannot find a way to transfer videos from the app to my camera roll. When I have attempted to download a video on my phone, it says "video download not supported". Will I need to use the SD card and put it into a computer?
Hello, thank you for this helpful video! For some reason when I am at the menu in the camera setting when I go to change the ISO Auto Upper Limit (photo), I get a response saying "this menu item can't be set". Could it be from a feature that would clash with this requested alteration? If anyone knows anything about this occurrence, please let me know!
Have you tried using the Leica remote app to do a long exposure? My experience is that the three key features you’d want to manually control like ISO, F and Shutter Speed have been disabled from the app. Also, there is no remote release button compatible with this camera. These were quite disappointing to discover.
I have watched your video four times. I have a Leicadlux-7 as a travel camera and a M-10 for other photos. I cannot get my d’lux to stay on Raw. I have selected Raw in both Full menu and Quick menu but each time I turn the camera off it reverts to JPEG. Help.
Hi Huckerby. Check you are not inadvertently turning the camera on into the full auto mode (the little button next to the Power ON lever). You might see a red icon in the top left corner of the rear screen. This 'totally auto' mode only shoots jpegs and it's easy to turn on by accident. If the problem persists, the other option is to do a full camera reset, and if that fails, it might need to be taken in for service. Let us know how you go...
Hi, I’m having trouble updating my firmware to 2.0 from 1.1. I’ve followed the steps to a tee but never get the update screen. Is there a special way to do this? Turn power on, then press play button. Does it have to be done at the same time? Hope you can help. Thanks!
Did you copy the f/w file to the correct place on the memory card? It needs to be in the top level of the directory structure, not in any folder. If this is not the problem and you are following the other instructions then you might need to take it to a Leica store and see if they can help.
@@LeicaCameraAustralia yep, I did all the instructions. I’m just not sure if I’m doing the turning on of the camera and pressing of the play button correctly. Do I first turn the camera on, the press the play button? Is there a timing of the pressing that I’m perhaps missing? Thanks for your time.
Hi Mark. I can't force my camera to do a f/w update since it's already been done, and I cannot remember having any problems when I did it. Thus I can't troubleshoot this for you. I suggest calling a store or emailing tech support. If you have not done so try turning on the camera whilst already holding the play button. The instructions are a bit vague I must admit.
@@LeicaCameraAustralia Hi, thanks for your help. I figured it out. I downloaded a firmware file with a really long name. Renamed it to DLX7_V20. Then did the whole process to update and it worked! Learned lots of stuff from your video. thanks!
Hi. All these images were shot with the camera in raw mode to get the maximum quality. As such, all the images are post-processed to some degree, as that is essential when shooting raw. That said, my style is one of realism and the post processing is therefore minimal. The Jpegs out of the camera are great, it's just that shooting raw and adjusting later gives even better results.
Leica Camera Australia thanks for the reply!! One last bit - I shoot with Sony A7III and though that is a full frame and a bigger sensor size but would it be too atrocious to compare the image quality with this Leica. The reason I ask is that I need a second camera which I can carry everywhere and my earlier experience with Fuji X100V has not been good from image quality perspective.
The D-Lux 7 produces fully publishable image quality and I have made prints up to 16x20 inches with excellent results. If you like video it does a great job in 4K.
Leica Camera Australia Many thanks!! This has helped me make a decision. I was tossed b/w this and used Leica Q. Both diff. The D-Lux 7 can connect to the Leica Fotos app using wifi. You can find details on pages 223 - 253 of the camera manual.
Without this I would have been lost... thank you sir! Now I at least have a starting point 👌📷
Glad I could help!
Very good and clear instructional video, thank you Nick. One small disappointment: so much of the menu was dismissed as 'irrelevant to shooting in RAW' - but lots of folks shoot JPEG rather than RAW and an explanation of all the menu options could be really helpful.
I agree
You should do a jpeg photo demo and go through the filters, would make smothered great video 📸
Thinking buying this camera. Your very professional video has brought mr very close to a decision.
Hi Huw. You will not regret it, it's a fine camera.
That is an amazing little camera! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
I just got my D-Lux 7. This was extremely helpful.
This was very handy! I just got my hands on a BAPE x Stash version
Love the quality ❤️ love leica📸
Finally! Been waiting for this tutorial, i bought mine in QVB,Sydney. Thank you so much!
You are so welcome!
That was a wonderful video presentation. Thank you so much ☺️
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Nick. I just got one - my 1st Leica. it looks and feels good and I registered all your tips. Its going to be a great companion. Thanks for the vid. Could you do a vid on video recording with this little beauty?
Hope you enjoy it!
Superb video. I am sold on this model.
Good choice!
Yes I did..clear, direct and professional. Thank you!
Thanks Jorge
Excellent your video.
Could you tell me if the Leica D-Lux 7 supports the connection of an intervalometer?
Thank you so much.
The D-Lux 7 has a built-in intervalometer for Time Lapse. See P 133 of the camera manual. I don't think an external one could be fitted.
Very good video… I have one on order. I wished you would have discussed the HDR functions. I missed that set up in the menu.
@@LeicaCameraAustralia Thanks for the reply 👍
Just bought mine in Berlin. Great tutorial, thank you!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks nick great video .I’ll be buying the d lux 7 many thanks
You are welcome - enjoy the camera.
Great stuff, my girlfriend is really thinking about getting this camera!
Go for it!
Masterfully done video!
The D-Lux 7 should no better or worse than any other camera of a similar design in this regard.
jus ordered mine. waiting waiting now
I wish there is a tutorial on how night shots are taken.
I was getting really excited by this camera, and then I realised its the Panasonic LX 100 ii made in China, I am genuinely interested to know what sets them apart?
Excellent video! So thorough and informative!
Glad it was helpful!
SO incredibly helpful. Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
Yes, you can tap on the screen to set a new focus point position.
Thanks a lot and have a great day.
I am using
the PHOTOS and Light Room on my cell. Did some B/W pics not downloading to software on cell. Could you tell me what I am doing wrong.
Are you able to drop by a Leica dealer? This is hard to troubleshoot without being hands-on. Sorry.
Very clear! Thank you for this video!
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent calm video , could you prepare a similar video based on using the camera not on RAW as that is beyond my expertise at present
Great suggestion!
Great tutorial! Thank you.
As the sensor is 4;3 ratio, wouldn't that Aspect Ratio give the maximum pixels (vs 3:2)? I'd think 3:2 would be cropped from the 4:3 native-?
What's the best easy way to take a clear, nonblurry picture on the previous model of this camera? My pictures so often come out blurry!
Thanks a lot! Great video and very useful. And a question too, does the camera make a soft sound, like if there were a constant little motor always on? Mine does and I am not sure if it is normal.. Its a tiny sound, but appreciable, when you bring the camera to the eye in a quiet environment... :/
If I put my ear to the camera there is a very soft whirring. That's the lens stabiliser operating. It's normal.
@@LeicaCameraAustralia Thanks a lot. Weird thing is that it also sounds when the stabiliser if OFF, but i guess it is what it is. Thanks for the reply and for the great video!
That is odd. On mine, it's totally silent when the stabiliser is off. Could it be that the autofocus is set to 'continuous'?
@@LeicaCameraAustralia wow, that was amazing at f/4! Maybe my aperture was wide open when I took that photo. Thank you for the reply!
Thank god i finally found a how to operate video😭
That is great!
Thanks for this video! It was very useful
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Nick - nice introduction.
Glad you liked it!
Thank you for a very clear video
You are welcome!
Excellent video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I figured out that the camera has to be set on P to do those setup sittings
Hello there! I have a little doubt or question in regard to the Leica D Lux 7 - Would you be so kind to help me out?
Ask away…
When I go into quick menu go to Quality pic. All I can select is standard or mono nothing else. Please help Thanks Bob Singleton
Great instruction. Thanks!
You're welcome!
Great Video!Could you please tell me whether dlux7 supports SanDisk 512GB SD card?
According to the Manual, the camera works with SDHC up to 32GB and SDXC cards up to 128GB. I do not know if bigger cards can be used. 128GB will hold about 6400 raw images, not sure why a bigger card would be of much benefit!
@@LeicaCameraAustralia Because I have a spare 512GB SD card. And I made an appointment on the 12th to buy the Dlux7 007 version, it seems that I have to buy another 128GB SD card.
Do you need such a big card? I use multiple 32gb cards, I prefer not to have all my eggs in one basket, so to speak.
Hi Nick
Thank you for an informative and detailed video on the Leica D Lux 7 delivered at exactly the right pace for the viewer/listener to digest(I often wonder if American reviewers are in a race to finish)
I am hoping to buy the D Lux 7 for my birthday next month but being of Yorkshire heritage I am reluctant to pay the extra, over the Panasonic LX 100 Mk II, when in performance they seem identical.
Thank you! Much appreciated!
You're welcome!
Hello, I have searched multiple websites and videos and cannot find a way to transfer videos from the app to my camera roll. When I have attempted to download a video on my phone, it says "video download not supported". Will I need to use the SD card and put it into a computer?
That would be the best solution. Video files are huge and are a challenge to transfer wirelessly.
You may be in 'full auto' mode. That's the little button next to the on/off switch.
Have you tried using the Leica remote app to do a long exposure? My experience is that the three key features you’d want to manually control like ISO, F and Shutter Speed have been disabled from the app. Also, there is no remote release button compatible with this camera. These were quite disappointing to discover.
For long exposures you can use the self timer. I do this with all my cameras, easier than a remote unless you need to time the shot.
iA+ is very good when lending the camera to someone else to take you or your group’s photo for you. It is basically ‘idiot-proof’.
Could you do one for Dlux 4 pls? 🥴
Hi how about fireworks shots with this camera?!?
what does ''iDynamic" option do?
Please could you tell him I restore to factor settings
Learned lots of stuff from your video. thanks!
You should do a jpeg photo demo, and demo the filters, would make smothered good video of this camera 📸.
Good idea. Thanks.
Accidentally turned off the on screen level on the camera that helps you know if the picture is straight or not, how do I turn it back on?
Try the Disp button. That should cycle through different viewfinder modes.
Thank you Nick
You're welcome.
How many of these images are post edits? I am interested in knowing how good is the image out of the camera pls? Thanks
Both diff. Cameras but this is good enough as second body for casual shots and also I believe can be extended for some serious stuff. The amount I save from not buying Q helps me with Sony 24 f1.4 GM lens. Hope that’s a wise choice.
@@Himlovesrunning I have the Sony A7iii too. It’s a great camera. However, I still enjoy the smaller non changeable lens cameras like the DLux7. I am getting stunning photos from this Leica!!! Without the bother of carrying and changing lenses.
