The type of video i was looking for, into the action, being a photographer with this enjoyable new toy, i was hesitant but gonna order mine, this video gave me the final push
I don't know why I never see anybody using the camera's EVF, except for the fact that it would be difficult to make a video of them using it. I prefer using the EVF; it allows me to brace my elbows against my body and hold the camera much steadier. The D-Lux 8 EVF is wonderfully bright and clear; I love using it.
Thanks for the photos and showing a MFT camera in action. I use MFT & FF on the street. As for inexpensive ( not cheap ) cameras, the Olympus PEN PL8 will render good shots, and the Lumix GX-9 with a Leica 15mm, or really any MFT lens, renders excellent shots, with fast and accurate contrast detect focusing. I do like the Nikon Z5 quality however. For tiny cameras, and light in weight, the MFT is great, unless you buy the larger MFT cameras, as in why would you do that. Too bad all those beautiful people staring at their smartphones are missing out on the world about them. Cell phone addiction is a sad - sad thing.
Nice. I recently sold off my Leica Q2 Monochrom, which I loved. I was going to buy a Q3 and forego the mono sensor, but I think that I'll opt for the D-Lux 8 instead. Once you've experienced Leica, it's hard to go back to others. People miss the point by stating it "isn't weather sealed", or the "sensor could be better fopr the money", etc, etc. It isn't about that. It's about having fun with a very well designed system.
I like to watch your street photography videos. It’s a nice concept to see you walking, finding interesting moments and also see non-interesting moments. And your photos are good. If you ever come to the Netherlands and want to have a walk in the streets, just let me know 😉
@@AndrewLanxonPhotography The shots around 6:20, where you're shooting down. geat to get a different perspective than the usual of having everyone at the same level.
Love the ones with the motion blur. Overall, great pictures! When I see your street photos, I always get in the mood, and want to go out and do something similar, then I remember that I live in a country where street photography is basically impossible due to strickt gdpr-regulations...
Super video, camera seems to perform well, it’s all down to the photographer, to much emphasis on mega pixels etc etc, having used om1s & Pentax’s back in the day todays cameras are fantastic , looking forward to getting my Dlux 8 today.
I have one also. Good points and some not so good points after using it for a couple of weeks. Bought it as a handy everyday backup camera to my M & SL, and I like its compact size, lightweight, the ability to zoom out and in at short notice. A lot of people may say its sensor is old and small but I’ve found its output in colour to be rather close to a M9’s given they are both around 17-18 mps. Monochrome pics are a little flat and will require a bit of touching up in LR to bring up the contrasts but overall, given its size and lightweight, it is a good everyday cum backup camera, especially when you bring it for a pre-shoot reconnoiter before bringing in the heavy artillery of the M or SL. Its dynamic range naturally cannot be compared with the M or the SL but it is a handy camera for reconnoitering purposes. What I don’t like is its protruding lens which makes it a bit awkward for street photography, but I guess I maybe a bit unreasonable in view of its 75mm equivalent zoom (and it performs better than the previous digital zooms). What really bothers me is the slow shutdown to write the data and to retract the lens. It makes me wait for the lens to retract after a shot and I don’t like to hold and walk around with the lens protruding out. Also I’ve found the power on/off button is located too close to the shutter release, and I had accidentally pressed it more than a couple of times to shut down the camera instead of taking a pic (and having to wait for its long shutdown time and that could be rather annoying). Overall, I’d say it is still a decent performer but not without its own share of flaws or inconveniences here and there.
Go to page 4 of the menu, Leica FOTOS connectivity should be switched off. Then lens will retract immediately when you switch off. Otherwise camera first closing connection to your phone before shut down and it takes few seconds. You can switch connection on when you need it.
I feel perhaps I have underestimated the IQ possible with a Four Thirds sensor. The tonal range and detail in your monochrome images is really excellent…impressive! Though I do worry regarding the Leica D-Lux 8 lacking IBS. However, your video from behind the lens with a view of the LCD, actually framing and capturing images, seems to indicate the lens Optical Image Stabilization is effective, or, you are a very steady hand-held shooter. Either way - wonderful video! Great idea, and so informative as to the camera’s operation. Thank you!
Cheap , you kidding mate , glad you got the dosh to think that a rehashed Panasonic is a bargain. But hey it’s not the tool it’s the eye behind the tool. Keep snapping nice pics 👍
A great video and a cool introduction to Edinburgh if, like me, you have never had an opportunity to visit. Some brilliant photos. Were you using face / eye detect AF?
Thanks Ken! Glad you enjoyed my little sightseeing tour! I think I was mostly using central spot focusing which is what I use for 99% of my photography.
The monochrome profile looks good. Good tonality and decent contrast without looking too digital like all Fuji stuff. Did you have to do any post or these just out of the camera jpegs?
They're mostly my own conversions done in Lightroom from the raw image, though the jpegs weren't much different. My edits are a bit more contrasty as I found the in camera profile a little flat.
Beautiful city! But I’m curious how well the camera functions for street photography. How fast is the camera turn on and how fast does the zoom work, also how fast is the auto focus? 🖖
Thanks Simon! It's ready to shoot in about 2-3 seconds which is good enough in my experience. As for the focus speed, you can see for yourself in the video - it's very quick. Zoom not so much but as I'm hoping I proved, it's good enough for a day of casual street photography!
A typical Scottish summer… The Storm trooper, I shot her having her break a few weeks ago but the companion in your photo wasn’t there. So, what do you think about the D-Lux 8? I decided not to buy one and go for the X100VI instead when I finally gave up hope in getting a Leica Q3… The waiting list was so long and the price jumped £250 just recently making it £5,550! That finished any thoughts of getting one now… What put me off the D-Lux 8 was the small pixel count of the sensor… rather low for a modern camera but this is an old camera restyled and rebadged, a Panasonic one, and is discontinued in its Panasonic guise. 🏴 I took my new X100VI out today for the first time and do some street photography… my old X100V, which I traded in to buy the VI was quite different in use compared to this new camera even though body wise they are very similar. I found it a bit slower to start up than the V which meat I needed to have it switched on the instant I saw a shot, or keep it on. I missed a few shots where, even though I had pressed the shutter, it didn’t take a shot… hmmm! Obviously time is needed to allow for the IBIS to fire up before a photograph can be taken… a wee learning curve there. The other thing is with eye/face detection… I found it had an annoying habit of focusing on those in the background and not on the subject I wanted to shoot… the X-T5 does the same thing too so I think I will switch off face/eye detection and go back to focus and reposition to see if that works better… lovely camera though.
I don't think I can tempt you to make a do-over, this time using the Xiaomi 14 Ultra phone (Leica-badged), with the excellent grip accessory? I'd be curious to know how the images compare.
If you search for the phone and CNET you'll find not just my review of the phone, but a whole gallery of images I took out and about in London with it. It's a superb phone for street photography, especially with the camera grip. But as I cover mobile for CNET in my real job I avoid focusing on phones on my channel to avoid crossover! "Cheap" is very subjective, especially for a small sensor, small battery, 1600 dollar camera that doesn't even have weather sealing and performs weak in low light conditions, ruling out quite some usability.
It absolutely is subjective, but it's also relative. 1600 isn't cheap for me either, but it IS the cheapest new Leica you can buy right now so it's definitely cheap for anyone wanting to enter into the Leica world but who don't want to spend 14,000 on an M11 plus lenses.
